Outside of having one of the greatest rom-com plots of all time (if not the greatest), When Harry Met Sally boasts some of the most gorgeous nature shots of New York City ever caught on film. Billy Crystal reveals to TV Insider that weather almost deprived us of one of its most picturesque scenes. Had they waited just one more day to film it, they would have lost the perfect shot. When Harry Met Sally shows the changing seasons so idyllically. Crystal tells TV Insider its cinematography is “underrated in that way.” One of the film’s most famous moments takes place in Central Park. In it, Harry (Crystal) and Sally (Meg Ryan) stroll through the park talking about their odd sex dreams before going to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. They’re surrounded by gorgeous autumn leaves in the scene. “It was timed that way,” Crystal says. And the timing was kismet.

What would movies be about if not for love? Since well before the days of Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman in “Casablanca,” romance has driven countless classic stories, setting up some of the highest highs in cinematic history to follow. Be it Cary Grant and Grace Kelly seeing stars in “To Catch a Thief” or Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal disturbing diner patrons in “When Harry Met Sally,” the 20th century was chock full of iconic romances that helped humanity fall in love with the movies. Of course, those titles were dominated by white artists telling largely heteronormative tales — meaning many (but not all) of the best and most inclusive romances have arrived this millennium.
Now, the best romance movies of the 21st century both resonate and surprise, showing audiences characters they might recognize from their own lives in new and surprising ways. Yes, finding “the one” is exceedingly well-frequented thematic territory,...

Dimitri proves himself a hero early on, making him more admirable and courageous than classic Disney princes. Dimitri and Anastasia's romance grows naturally, deviating from the typical love at first sight trope in Disney movies. Dimitri's character stands out as he looks like an average young man, giving a more relatable and realistic portrayal.
Despite not being as widely known, Dimitri in Anastasia is a better Disney prince than all those who came before and after the Russian con man. That's right, Dimitri is a Disney prince and that's not just because Anastasia hits the same familiar beats of those classic animated Disney movies. In 2019, Disney acquired most of 21st Century Fox's assets, including 20th Century Studios and its vast library, making Anastasia, officially, a Disney movie. This is somewhat ironic considering how fiercely Disney originally warred against Anastasia upon release, concerned that the film would dip into their...

Masters of the Air co-creator John Orloff defends the show's characterizations, stating they accurately reflect the real-life figures of the time. He says Buck and Bucky feel very Hollywood because Air Force pilots at the time really acted like that. Orloff contrasts Buck and Bucky's Hollywood vibe with characters like Nate Mann's Rosie, who take things more seriously.
One of the Masters of the Air producers has responded to criticisms about the characterizations of Buck and Bucky. The characters, who are played by Austin Butler and Callum Turner respectively, are best friends and co-leads in the Apple TV+ World War II Air Force show, which is based on the 2007 Donald L. Miller nonfiction book of the same name. With their onscreen bond that feels similar to Steve and Bucky in the Captain America movies, the pair have drawn criticism online for feeling too Hollywood.

Oscar week is finally here! Ask anyone who has been in the thick of awards season and they’ll likely let out a huge sigh followed by exasperated admission that this has been one of the most hectic runs in recent memory. The condensed calendar, forced by last year’s dual strikes, could translate to more lively bashes, however, as there’s light at the end of the tunnel with Sunday’s Oscars. That can only mean that champagne is currently popping at A-list bashes across Los Angeles, and The Hollywood Reporter is on the scene everywhere from Vanity Fair and Elton John to MPTF’s Night Before. See below for the roundup of all the red carpet action.

The canon of Ilana Glazer-led indies about childbearing expands. Following 2021’s “False Positive,” Glazer plays pregnant once again in “Babes,” this time from a film script she wrote with Josh Rabinowitz in Pamela Adlon’s feature directorial debut. The Neon comedy follows Eden (Glazer), who gets pregnant from a one-night stand and seeks help from Dawn (Michelle Buteau), a married mother of two. In other words, “Babes” lets the “Broad City” star do what she does best: lean heavily on the support of a best buddy.

Filmmaker Edward Zwick, whose credits include About Last Night, Glory, Legends of the Fall, The Siege, The Last Samurai, Blood Diamond, Defiance, Love & Other Drugs, Pawn Sacrifice, and Jack Reacher: Never Go Back (not to mention co-creating Thirtysomething), recently published a memoir called Hits, Flops, and Other Illusions: My Fortysomething Years in Hollywood (pick up a copy Here). This book contains some very interesting passages – like the one on Zwick’s Jack Reacher regrets, and another where he reveals how impressed Denzel Washington was by Matt Damon’s performance when they were on the set of Zwick’s 1996 film Courage Under Fire.
Zwick wrote, “As we finished Matt’s coverage, Denzel caught my eye and nodded approvingly. Later, he took me aside. ‘Who is that kid?’ he asked. I told him it was Matt’s first big role. ‘Damn,’ he said. ‘Better get my game on. He almost blew me off the screen.

Rob Reiner's When Harry Met Sally is widely considered one of the greatest rom-coms ever made. Written by the queen of romantic comedies herself, Nora Ephron, it's really not surprising that the film remains so pivotal and beloved thirty years after its release. Starring Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan as the titular Harry and Sally, the film follows the two throughout the years as they search for love. They're not very successful and continuously bump into each other, eventually sparking up a friendship that constantly begs the question: Can a man and woman ever truly be just friends without sex getting in the way? Harry seems to think no, while Sally is the more optimistic of the two. Of course, since it's a romance movie, the pair do eventually end up together by the movie's end. But as it turns out, that wasn't the original plan.

Romantic comedies are alive and well, it seems, and we have a couple of emerging, A-list movie stars to thank for it. "Anyone But You" has officially crossed the $200 million mark at the box office in one of the most unlikely turnarounds for a movie in years, financially speaking. But the star power of Glen Powell ("Top Gun: Maverick") and Sydney Sweeney ("Euphoria") got the attention of the moviegoing masses and they turned this lower-mid-budget rom-com into the biggest hit the genre has seen in nearly a decade.
The Sony Pictures release has amassed $87 million domestically to go with a stellar $113 million internationally, per Variety. That puts it past the total of other recent hits in the genre, including "Ticket to Paradise" ($168 million), which starred both Julia Roberts and George Clooney, as well as "The Lost City" ($192 million), which was led by Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum. Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell appeared in a romantic-comedy movie Anyone but You directed by Will Gluck from a screenplay he co-wrote with Ilana Wolpert. The movie is loosely based on William Shakespeare’s play Much Ado About Nothing, and upon its release received mixed reviews from the audience and critics.
Sweeney and Powell’s movie Anyone But You has managed to gross $200 million worldwide making it the highest-grossing live-action adaptation of Shakespeare’s play. The duo apart from their chemistry in the movie garnered attention for their endearing chemistry off-screen, and recently, Powell shared that they are eyeing to star in a project once again.

When something works, it’s natural to try to duplicate the success. The romantic comedy Anyone But You‘s success somewhat flew under the radar, but in a good victory for mid-budget movies, the movie made a record-breaking $200 million worldwide. Additionally, both of the film’s stars’ careers are taking with upcoming projects. Glen Powell will be appearing in this summer’s Twisters, and Sydney Sweeney will be starring in next month’s horror flick, Immaculate. However, just like Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan or Julia Roberts and Richard Gere, Powell and Sweeney know you can never have too much of a good thing.

Everyone could use a good cry now and again. And what better way to get those tears flowing than watching a movie?
Variety caught up with this year’s Oscar nominees at the Academy’s annual nominees luncheon at the Beverly Hilton to find out the last time they cried at the movies.
“I cried at ‘Parallel Mothers,’” said “Oppenheimer” star Emily Blunt. “When Penélope [Cruz] breaks down, it’s so beautiful. I am a crier. I can’t bear to see other people cry. If I see someone cry, I will cry immediately.”
Emma Stone recently rewatched “Sleepless in Seattle,” the 1993 romantic comedy starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. “So much of that movie is heartbreaking,” the “Poor Things” star said.
Sterling K. Brown said he was recently caught off guard when he and his youngest son were watching “Matilda.” “It was his first time crying at a movie,” the “American Fiction” star recalled.

The original ending for When Harry Met Sally would have seen Harry and Sally not getting together, which would have changed the course of rom-coms. Rob Reiner decided to change the ending after personal experiences, ultimately showing that love can evolve from a strong friendship. The final, more optimistic ending of When Harry Met Sally added to the realism of the film and the typical rom-com happy ending.
When Harry Met Sally almost had a completely different ending, which would have proven its original message right in the worst way. The 1980s and 1990s saw the peak of romantic comedies, and one that ranks high in countless rom-com lists is When Harry Met Sally. Directed by Rob Reiner and written by Nora Ephron, When Harry Met Sally stars Billy Crystal as Harry and Meg Ryan as Sally, marking the latter’s beginning as one of the most popular and beloved rom-com actresses of the 1990s.

Instead of a direct sequel, Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney should star in a new rom-com together for continued success. Similar to Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan reuniting in You've Got Mail after Sleepless in Seattle, Powell and Sweeney should reunite in a different rom-com. Anyone but You 2 doesn't need a sequel, but Powell and Sweeney could still utilize their chemistry in another rom-com.

Zombie movies? Can’t shake a stick without knocking a minimum of 20 quality ones out of a tree. You want vampires? Tell me the decade and the type and I’ll give you recommendations to keep you going for weeks. Werewolves? Well, for some reason, the werewolf falls in with his other Universal monster counterparts The Mummy, Frankenstein, and the Creature from the Black Lagoon as creatures that should have a lot more entries come to mind. I’m not saying that there aren’t any, quite the contrary. I can tell you quite a few must-see werewolf movies that you all probably know but the list is not nearly as deep as the other monsters mentioned above. Late Phases (watch it Here), also known under the stupidly generic title of Night of the Wolf, does a lot of interesting things while being a thoroughly enjoyable and almost arthouse movie...

Rob Reiner directed When Harry Met Sally back in 1989. Written by Nora Ephron, the movie starred Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal in the two titular roles, and went on to become a top-tier placeholder in the genre of romantic comedies. Reiner himself made a lot of contributions to the screenplay of the movie, and was even the basis for the character of Harry. Ephron, on the other hand, was the basis of the character Sally.

The ending of When Harry Met Sally was not how it was initially conceived, and director Rob Reiner is opening up about what changed his mind.

The original ending of When Harry Met Sally was Harry and Sally not ending up together, but it was changed to show a happy romantic ending. Director Rob Reiner's personal experience of meeting his wife influenced the change in the film's ending, creating a more positive message and legacy. The film's new ending emphasizes honesty and frank discussions leading to love, setting a standard for romantic comedies to follow.
When Harry Met Sally director Rob Reiner explains why the beloved 1989 film originally had a different ending. The story of Harry Burns (Billy Crystal) and Sally Albright (Meg Ryan), and the gradual evolution of their relationship, remains one of the most celebrated romantic comedies of all time. The romantic and comedic elements remain timeless, and the relatable dialogue is well-written. At the time, the film was also groundbreaking for its candid discussions about sex from both men's and women's perspectives.

Rob Reiner’s 1980s classic ‘When Harry Met Sally’ almost had quite a different ending, according to ‘The Hollywood Reporter’. During an interview with CNN’s Chris Wallace, the classic film’s director and co-writer Rob Reiner revealed that his and Nora Ephron’s script originally had a sadder ending for Harry (Billy Crystal) and Sally (Meg Ryan).

I’d been single for 10 years, and I couldn’t figure out how I was ever going to be with anybody, and that gave birth to ‘When Harry Met Sally’.”
Reiner continued, “I met my wife Michele, who I’ve been married to now for 35 years. I met her while we were making the film, and I changed the ending.

When Harry Met Sally almost had quite a different ending. (Spoilers ahead!)
During an interview with CNN’s Chris Wallace, the classic film’s director and co-writer Rob Reiner revealed that he and Nora Ephron’s script originally had a sadder ending for Harry (Billy Crystal) and Sally (Meg Ryan).
“It was going to be the two of them seeing each other after years, talking and then walking away from each other,” Reiner told Wallace. “I had been married for 10 years. Good Morning America’s Robin Roberts was feeling the love on the Valentine’s Day episode of the ABC program.
She’s been known to joke, tease, and banter with her GMA colleagues, including her fired-up interaction with one anchor about the Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce relationship.
However, things nearly became awkward as she put her co-anchors on the hot seat during a live TV segment on Wednesday.
Roberts was joined by Michael Strahan, who returned to GMA after a week away, and George Stephanopoulos, who continues to appear regularly on ABC’s show.
During one part of GMA, Roberts told her co-anchors she had an important question to ask them.
Strahan and Stephanopoulos wisely navigated being put on the hot seat, though.

Meg Ryan has left an indelible mark on our hearts with her enchanting and endearing rom-com performances. From the iconic “I’ll have what she’s having” scene in When Harry Met Sally… (available for purchase on Apple TV+ or Prime Video) to the charming rendezvous atop the Empire State Building in Sleepless in Seattle, Ryan’s romantic comedy legacy is etched in cinematic history. In 1993’s Sleepless (available for rent on Prime Video), Ryan dazzles as the doe-eyed Annie Reed alongside Tom Hanks’ Sam Baldwin, a couple who redefine long-distance love. She paired with Hanks again in 1998’s You’ve Got Mail (available for rent on Prime Video), where Kathleen (Ryan) and Joe (Hanks) spar as book-selling rivals who unwittingly fall for each other over anonymous email exchanges. What Happens Later (Credit: © Bleecker Street Media / Courtesy Everett ) In 2001’s Kate & Leopold (on Max), Ryan delights as Kate, an ambitious career...

In the late '80s and throughout the '90s, Meg Ryan absolutely owned the rom-com genre. From unforgettable roles in When Harry Met Sally to collaborations with Tom Hanks in Sleepless in Seattle and You've Got Mail, she cornered the market as "the girl next door" who was just so likable. When she stepped out of her comfort zone in 1993 with the neo-noir Western drama Flesh and Bone, it was risky considering the niche she had already carved out for herself in Hollywood. And even though it didn't pay off at the box office, Ryan delivered a performance that made audiences take note that she was far more versatile than we were giving her credit for. Flesh and Bone is a slow burn, and Ryan shines in the part of Kay Davies. At the peak of her powers, how did Ryan not draw a larger crowd alongside a cast that included Dennis Quaid,...

Lucy Hale's performance in Which Brings Me To You proves she could be the next big-name romantic comedy actress, taking on the girl-next-door charm Meg Ryan is known for. Hale infuses her character Jane with authenticity, making it easy to laugh along with her embarrassments and cry at her heartbreaks. Which Brings Me To You is just the most recent addition to Hale's streak of great romantic comedies, and she has another exciting rom-com project in the works.
Lucy Hale’s new movie Which Brings Me to You proves she’s the perfect replacement for one iconic 90s star. Adapted from the eponymous book by Julianna Baggott and Steve Almond, Which Brings Me To You tells the story of Will (Nat Wolff) and Jane (Lucy Hale), two people who meet at a wedding and try to hook up in the coatroom. In the 1995 movie "Waterworld," Kevin Costner was the draw in more ways than one. To much of the audience, he was still the glamorous movie star who had managed to pull off a blockbuster "Robin Hood" movie despite his inability to successfully nail an English accent. To others, he seemed like he might be a potential trainwreck on the verge of derailment. "Waterworld" had fallen victim to many behind-the-scenes tales of sinking sets, director fights, and Costner rewriting the script to make himself look better. Ultimately, for one reason or another, enough people were curious about the film that it turned a profit. However difficult he may have been behind the scenes, the star turned out to still have it.
Within the movie, however, the person everyone wants to see is Enola, a nine year-old girl whose back tattoo features an encoded map to the last bit of dry land on a post-climate change world.

Director Joseph Kosinski defends Meg Ryan's absence as Carole Bradshaw in Top Gun: Maverick, arguing that it was in the best interest of the story. The director explains that Carole's absence is what gives power to the Maverick and Rooster arc and that it was a "hard" choice. The Maverick and Rooster arc is crucial to the emotional undercurrent of the movie and it makes the explosive ending that much more satisfying.
Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski defends Meg Ryan not being brought back as Carole Bradshaw for the 2022 sequel. Actress Scarlett Johansson finally escaped our long-running photo gallery of the greatest living actresses to never receive an Oscar nomination. And she did it in grand style by picking up two for her 2019 films “Marriage Story” and “Jojo Rabbit.” Just recently, Kirsten Dunst had been in our gallery for years and then earned her first Academy Award bid for “The Power of the Dog.” Emily Blunt was finally nominated for “Oppenheimer” years after winning her first SAG Award for “A Quiet Place.”
In 2014, “Friends” star Jennifer Aniston looked like a lock to receive her first Academy Award nomination for “Cake,” following citations at the Golden Globes, SAG, and Broadcast Film Critics. Yet on Oscar morning, the Emmy-winner was left out. Aniston’s “Friends” costar and fellow Emmy-victor Lisa Kudrow found herself in a similar situation when she received an Independent Spirit Awards nomination for “The Opposite of Sex” yet came up short at the Oscars.

Miles Teller played Rooster in Top Gun: Maverick, but wasn't Goose's son in the original Top Gun. Many viewers may have forgotten that Rooster appeared in the 1986 movie before being reintroduced in the sequel. The original child actors who portrayed Goose's son, Bradley, were not approached to return for Top Gun: Maverick. The Weis twins have moved on from acting and are now teachers. They were not even credited in the original film and were considered as extras. Miles Teller was a great choice to play Rooster in the sequel. His performance was applauded, and he brought depth and emotion to the role. Bringing back the original actors would have hurt the impact of the movie and Teller's portrayal solidified his place in the role.
Miles Teller played Rooster in Top Gun: Maverick, the son of Maverick's best friend, Goose, but Teller didn't star as Goose's son in the original Top Gun.

Goose's death in Top Gun was not Maverick's fault, but rather Iceman's selfish desire to win caused the accident. Iceman's individualistic actions of not moving out of the way when asked ultimately led to Goose's tragic demise. The introduction of Goose's son, Rooster, brings up the question of whether Maverick is to blame for his father's death, adding tension to their relationship throughout the film.
Decades after the movie's release, there is still a lot of controversy around how Goose died in Top Gun and who is at fault for the heartbreaking moment. The 1986 Tony Scott film was fun and exciting in its first two acts, but its vibe changed drastically after a tragic accident during a training session claimed Goose's life. Maverick and Goose's friendship went beyond their professional careers. Top Gun established this when Goose's family came to the academy to visit him. Even when Goose died,...

In Hollywood, January is generally considered a "dump month" where studios dump movies that they lack confidence in. Scattered box office hits like "American Sniper," "Bad Boys for Life," and last year's "M3GAN" have defied those expectations (mainly by taking advantage of the lack of competition), but this week's biggest release fits the "dump month" box to a tee. Sci-fi thriller "I.S.S." -- which stars Ariana Debose ("West Side Story") and was directed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite ("Blackfish") -- grossed just $1.2 million from 2,520 theaters on its opening day (including Thursday previews), and is projected to gross just $3.3 million in its opening weekend, per Variety.
This won't come as a surprise if, like me, you've seen almost no marketing for this movie. "I.S.S." was distributed by Bleecker Street, which also released Meg Ryan's "What Happens Later" and Catherine Hardwicke's "Mafia Mamma" in 2023. Both of those movies scored smaller opening weekends...

Acclaimed Greek filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos has a unique way of cutting straight to the heart of his oddball characters -- sometimes literally, but always in the most provocative ways. The director behind "The Lobster," "The Killing of the Sacred Deer," and "The Favourite" is no stranger to the idea of using violence and esoteric imagery as a means of bringing idiosyncratic worlds to life, though his most recent film "Poor Things" (reviewed here to great praise by /Film's Mike Shutt) has found itself on an awards track partly by incorporating an even spicier ingredient into the mix: sex. To Lanthimos fans, this was merely another item in the toolbelt for the journey of Bella Baxter (Emma Stone) and her Frankenstein's monster-like transformation into a full-fledged human being. But for co-star Mark Ruffalo, cast as the rascally ne'er-do-well Duncan Wedderburn and the subject of much "furious jumping" with Bella, the...

Little Women showcases the talents of Greta Gerwig, who infuses her own style of humor, heart, and sorrow into the beloved story. There are other movies, like Love & Friendship and Far From The Madding Crowd, that capture the magical aspects of sisterhood and period pieces. Movies like The Help and Steel Magnolias also exemplify solidarity between women in times of crisis and feature strong characterizations of women.
Though it is a classic tale itself, movies like Little Women show that there are plenty of worthwhile and beautiful movies that deal with similar stories of sisterhood. Greta Gerwig wrote and directed this adaptation of Louisa May Alcott's classic 1868 novel, the coming-of-age tale of four sisters who lived in a pitiful condition in their New England home during the Civil War. While maintaining the beloved story and its characters from the source material, Gerwig infuses it with her own style of humor,...

The 2024 Critics Choice Awards were handed out during a live ceremony on Sunday, January 14. For the second year in a row, Chelsea Handler hosted the annual movie and TV honors, the former portion of which serves as a preview of the 96th Oscars on March 10. Final voting for those nominations ends Tuesday, Jan. 16.
Heading into this star-studded event, the pressure was on “Barbie” to make good on its record-breaking 18 nominations across 16 categories. Although it finished with an impressive six victories, it was still outpaced by its former box office rival, “Oppenheimer,” which collected eight out of a possible 13 prizes, including Best Picture. Whereas five films each received multiple Cca Awards last year, that only applied to three this time, with the last being triple acting winner “The Holdovers.”
