This year’s Tonys will be held on June 16, so the American Theatre Wing will likely be announcing its lifetime achievement award recipient in the near future. Who do you think should take home this prestigious trophy? It has gone to veteran stage performers, directors, choreographers, playwrights, songwriters, producers and designers. In some years we get multiple recipients.
Last year these honors went to legendary actor Joel Grey and composer John Kander. The following living female Broadway vets have also received this award in the past and thus won’t be chosen again: Jane Greenwood, Rosemary Harris and Graciela Daniele. Here are 10 possible women the Tonys could award, all veterans over the age of 65. Vote to let us know who you’d like to see honored.

Every genre has classics: movies that sit at the vertex because they have all the necessary ingredients that fans always look forward to. In the action movie category, several examples, such as Die Hard and Predator, have exceeded expectations. Although many action movies have recently begun assimilating elements of other genres, they often remain faithful to what the fans want.
Thanks to their high quality, such films transcend eras and trends, hence they have remained as entertaining as they were during their premiere years. These classic action movies not only featured the biggest names of the time in starring roles but also had great storylines that kept viewers entertained, even when characters weren’t engaging in fisticuffs and shootouts.

Acclaimed actress Glenn Close displayed her good sense of humor when she shared a series of selfies on Instagram that showed her face bruised from a recent medical procedure.
In the candid close-up shots, Close playfully poses for the camera with tousled hair and a cozy cardigan. Alongside the images, she wrote, “I think this is going to be a particularly Good day,” in anticipation of her 77th birthday.
She acknowledged the bruises and explained that she had undergone a minor procedure to address a small break in her nose, but emphasized that she still felt as beautiful as ever.
While Close’s Instagram account typically features scenic landscapes and occasional political posts, the actress recently shared a video of herself making goofy faces.
“It’s morning in a new place away from home. I’m wishing I didn’t have to wash and brush my hair. #bedhead,” she wrote in the caption.

When the Apple TV+ series The New Look premiered in February, it brought with it the true stories of Paris-based fashion designers — from Christian Dior to Coco Chanel — navigating the hardships of World War II. But the show also offered a new sound by way of its Jack Antonoff-produced soundtrack. The latest release from the record finds Bartees Strange reimagining the 1940s classic “You Always Hurt the One You Love.”

New in theaters is “One Life” starring legendary actor Anthony Hopkins as real-life British humanitarian Sir Nicholas Winton. Just three years ago he led French playwright Florian Zeller‘s feature directorial debut “The Father.” It not only managed to win him a second Oscar for Best Actor following “The Silence of the Lambs” back in 1991, but it also made headlines. One reason was how it was unconventionally the final award presented during the telecast that year because the sentimental favorite, Chadwick Boseman (“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”), was widely expected to win posthumously. Hopkins pulled off a huge upset, though, and he wasn’t even there to accept it. How did that win happen? Here are five reasons.

Saltburn draws inspiration from iconic films like A Clockwork Orange and The Talented Mr. Ripley. Both Saltburn and Cruel Intentions explore wealthy excess and manipulation in a seductive manner. Cruel Intentions, a modern retelling, set the tone for teen movies through its unattainable and alluring world.
Rich people misbehaving has become a commonplace form of entertainment that audiences most recently saw in Emerald Fennell's Saltburn, a black comedy thriller focusing on excess, sex, and obsession. Fennell has cited several films as influences, including 1971's A Clockwork Orange and Daphne du Maurier's Rebecca, while critics felt she was heavily inspired by Patricia Highsmith's novel The Talented Mr. Ripley and its subsequent film adaptation, although she has downplayed those comparisons.
Another film Fennell has spoken about influencing her work in Saltburn is 1999's Cruel Intentions, a tale of young adults engaging in devilish behavior against a backdrop of rich high schoolers in New York City.

Glenn Close’s career brought her an eighth Oscar nomination in the supporting actress category for her role as Mamaw, the chain-smoking, foul-mouthed, “Terminator” franchise fan and tough-love proponent who takes her struggling grandson under her wing in Ron Howard’s “Hillbilly Elegy.”
Some critics thought Close was the saving grace of the film based on J.D. Vance’s memoir that focuses on an Appalachian family who have fallen on hard times when their once-thriving steel mill town in Ohio is riddled by poverty, addiction, domestic abuse and dead-end jobs.
Close holds the title of the most Oscar losses for an actress, in a tie with the late Peter O’Toole’s losing streak. Olivia Colman‘s performance as ditzy Queen Anne in “The Favourite” allowed her to be crowned with the Best Actress title over Close’s work in 2018’s “The Wife.”

Michelle Pfeiffer predicted stardom for a young, unknown Keanu Reeves.
That revelation comes as director Stephen Frears joins The Hollywood Reporter‘s It Happened in Hollywood podcast to discuss the making of his 1988 hit, Dangerous Liaisons.
The film starred Glenn Close and John Malkovich, playing conniving aristocrats in pre-French Revolution Paris who manipulate the people around them through sex and deception. Among their victims are characters played by Pfeiffer and Uma Thurman.
Reeves, then 23, was cast as Le Chevalier Danceny, a handsome musician who draws the attention of Close’s Marquise de Merteuil and falls in love with Thurman’s naive ingénue — then duels Malkovich’s Valmont for her honor.
Speaking on the podcast, Frears recalled that Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure was released just months after Dangerous Liaisons, turning Reeves overnight into a major movie star.
“But when he shot, he hadn’t [yet broken out,]” Frears said. “I saw a lot of young actors [for the role] and said,...

Killers Of The Flower Moon marks a third time for Scorsese to reach a particular Oscar stat
Most die-hard movie fans can tell you who the "all time biggest losers" are in Oscar history though they'll usually cite actors rather than films. The film list is interesting because usually when Oscar really loves a movie they'll find a way to give it at least one Oscar. Yet sometimes they really love you only on the first ballot but are over you when it comes time to pick winners. In the past ten years this list of "losers" had grown. Please take the term "loser" in good fun as being nominated for tons of Oscars is still a rarity in the grand scheme of Hollywood releases.

Fear (1996) was seen as a teen version of "Fatal Attraction," starring Mark Wahlberg as the villain. Despite negative reviews, Fear became a sleeper hit, earning $20 million at the box office. Wahlberg's role in Fear was his only true villainous character and led to his nomination for Best Villain at the MTV Movie Awards.
Mark Wahlberg (in his only true villainous role) starred alongside Reese Witherspoon in Fear, a movie that was seemingly inspired by a similar psychological thriller from the 1980s. The 1996 film was directed by James Foley and written by Christopher Crowe, and its story revolves around the strange romance between Wahlberg's David McCall and Witherspoon's Nicole Walker. Nicole is only 16, while David is 23, but their age difference in Fear isn't the only red flag. As the movie goes on, David's true character starts revealing itself, leading to an intense narrative that many compared to a previous critically acclaimed film.

This year, Gold Derby’s Oscar winners odds derived from the predictions of a record 11,034 users, constituting a 1.6% participation increase compared to 2023. Naturally, such a large group is prone to intense hive mentality, which can be a good or bad thing, often depending on the category. In this case, the crowd had a handle on most of the 23 races, but there were still quite a few that tripped them up, leading to our lowest rate of accuracy in five years.
By the end of the 96th Oscars, six of Gold Derby’s expected wins had failed to pan out, making for a final accuracy rate of 73.9%. Each subgroup whose predictions were used to calculate our combined odds – including 29 industry experts, 12 in-house editors, and thousands of regular users – collectively finished with the same percentage, although our editors stood alone in being right about Best Costume Design but wrong about Best Live Action Short.

Emma & Annette rising
The last time we did this list three years ago, Glenn Close (Hillbilly Elegy) and Frances McDormand (Nomadland) had just risen on the list with new nominations adding to their overall tally. After the nominations that year Glenn lost again and Frances won again. With Emma Stone (Poor Things) taking her second Oscar on Sunday night and Annette Bening & Jodie Foster (both in Nyad) in the shortlists this season once again, it's time for a refresher. They aren't the only stars to have moved up or entered the hallowed ranks in the past few years.

The Academy’s decision to give the Live Action Short Oscar to a star-laden Wes Anderson film has raised eyebrows…
On Sunday, Wes Anderson picked up his first Academy Awards for The Wonderful Story Of Henry Sugar. It won the Oscar for Best Live Action Short Film, a category that’s traditionally rewarded independent films, rather than Netflix-backed Roald Dahl adaptation with a major film director behind it.
The Live Action Short film category is attracting more and more high profile names to it, and there’s a real risk that’s squeezing out independent filmmakers from a genuine shot at Oscar gold.
None of this is a slight on Wes Anderson, and genuine congratulations to him on his long-overdue first Oscar.
Still, we’ve been contacted by a few independent filmmakers about the message it sounds out. The following words have been penned by Dan Turner, a British...

David Lynch's "Dune" was mostly seen as a misstep for the celebrated director back in 1984. As we gear up for the bleak blockbuster that is Denis Villeneuve's "Dune: Part Two," Lynch's "Dune" now occupies an unusual space in the public consciousness — somewhere between cult classic and historic blunder. There are undoubtedly plenty of things wrong with "Dune" 1984, and the film suffered a brutal critical and commercial reception. But forty years after Lynch's $40 million spectacle bombed at the box office, some have come to see the films' positives, arguing that "Dune" 1984 is better than its reputation suggests.
Which, as it happens, is a perfectly reasonable point of view. Aside from the impressive set and costume design, "Dune" actually featured some pretty good visual effects for the time. What's more, the casting was excellent. Lynch may have ruthlessly denied Glenn Close for a part in "Dune," but luckily for him,...

Pageantry. Screw ups. Touching tributes. Private beefs made public. There are plenty of reasons to watch the Oscars. But they all amount to partaking in, witnessing, movie history in its many forms — the high art, the gossip, the record-breaking moments when an arthouse director becomes a household name.
However, there are a lot of ways to set a record. There are big moments like Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King tying the record with 11 trophies or Bong Joon-Ho’s Parasite becoming the first film not in English (or silent) to win Best Picture. And then, beyond those sit the oddities and records that are nearly impossible to break. Give me records like Walter Brennan winning three Best Supporting Actor awards because, as a former extra, he was popular with the Union of Film Extras, who were allowed to vote. The Academy Award is the most prestigious in the film industry. The statuette represents the pinnacle of cinema, and every actor dreams of joining the league of elites who have won the trophy before them and etched their names in the annals of history. While winning the trophy is something that every budding actor aspires to work towards in their career, even an Oscar nomination holds value.
Hollywood has seen many stars come and go over the years, but very few have truly left a mark. Here are nine actors with the most nominations, whose incredible body of work forced the Academy to acknowledge their effort.

Toward the end of Season 1, ruthless litigator Patty Hewes (Glenn Close) is approached by her protégée, young lawyer Ellen Parsons (Rose Byrne), for a tense interaction. Ellen has taken the initiative to talk to an informant without asking permission from her boss. It doesn't go over well. “You have jeopardized the only serious lead we still have,” Patty says, grinding her teeth. “How could you be so stupid!” It’s a deliciously curt outburst that is done to intimidate, but this comes far enough in Season 1 that Ellen stands her ground. “I’m so sick of your bullshit,” she replies. Patty fires her on the spot, but their toxic relationship is the crux of Damages, and this isn’t goodbye for them.

If the golden era of the high school movie was the 1980s, packed with John Hughes’ tales of wistful outsider girls and horny nerds, then mid-late ‘90s was the reprise. This was the era of Valley Girls (Clueless), the make-over movie, and of course modern updates of classic literature. Cruel Intentions fits into this category and takes it to the next level. It’s a teen high school movie full of shagging and spitefulness which has genuine consequences and treats its characters like adults, while allowing them the naivety of youth. It’s 25 years old, and it’s still sexy as fuck.
Based on the novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos’ which was filmed memorably as 1988’s Dangerous Liaisons, starring Glenn Close, John Malkovich and Michelle Pfeiffer, Cruel Intentions had wonderfully salacious material to work with but big shoes to fill.

Meryl Streep holds the record for most Oscar nominations, scoring an impressive 21 but with only 3 wins. Katharine Hepburn tops the list with 4 Oscar wins, all for Best Actress in a Leading Role. Cate Blanchett won an Oscar for portraying Hepburn in 'The Aviator', showcasing her talent as an actress.
While every actor dreams of bringing home an Oscar, only a few have won multiple statuettes, with one standing out as the actor with the most Oscar wins. Since the acting branch is the largest within the Academy, the acting categories end up being one of the most competitive each year. Moreover, the branch gets to have a big influence in the Best Picture category, which every Academy member votes for, with a great bunch of actors taking part in the ceremony's most prestigious decision.
The Oscars have been going on since 1929, and some actors have broken unbelievable records throughout the Academy Awards history.

Some years many of the acting categories at the Oscars are unpredictable, like last year when Best Supporting Actress could’ve gone to Angela Bassett, Kerry Condon or Jamie Lee Curtis. This year, three of the four acting categories already seem locked up: Best Actor for Cillian Murphy (“Oppenheimer”), Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr. (“Oppenheimer”) and Best Supporting Actress for Da’Vine Joy Randolph (“The Holdovers”). Thankfully, however, we do have suspense in Best Actress, with the final prize going to either Emma Stone for “Poor Things” or Lily Gladstone for “Killers of the Flower Moon.” Here are the five reasons why I think Stone will still win on Oscar night …
1.The film and her performance have been critical favorites since August.

This year’s Best Actress Oscar race is perhaps the biggest head-scratcher of all of the main categories, becoming a make-or-break race for the fourth straight year.
It all began when Lily Gladstone surprised pundits with her move up to the lead category for “Killers of the Flower Moon,” then was halted by Emma Stone for “Poor Things” at the Critics Choice Awards (after both won Golden Globes in their respective categories). Stone continued to succeed at the BAFTA Awards after Gladstone was shockingly snubbed. Alien invaders are one of the most common stories told in the science fiction genre. Sci-fi movies have played on this theme from the beginning with terrifying tales of alien invaders and UFO attacks. Much of the sci-fi output of the 1950s was mainly focused on alien invaders as an analogy for the "Red Scare" and the fear of communism "invading."

Apple Original Films has revealed that Cameron Diaz is in final negotiations to board the Jonah Hill-directed dark comedy Outcome, starring John Wick star Keanu Reeves.
Per Variety, the details of Diaz's role are not yet public. Her casting in the upcoming project indicates the actor is committed to making a comeback following her return to movies in Netflix's action comedy Back in Action, where she will feature opposite Jamie Foxx. The film Outcome will follow Reeves' character Reef, a damaged Hollywood star who dives into the dark depths of his past to confront his demons and make amends after suffering extortion when a mysterious video clip from his past surfaces.
Related Review: Apple TV+'s Constellation Delivers a Slow, Obvious Sci-Fi Mystery Constellation is plodding and monotonous, lacking the plot twists or surprises that will make Apple TV+ viewers eager to tune in for future episodes.

When Cruel Intentions came out in 1999, it was riding a wave of teenage movies. Now turning 25 years old, Roger Kumble’s iconic teen drama was following in the footsteps of other hits of its time, such as Clueless, 10 Things I Hate About You, and She’s All That, adapting a markedly non-kid-oriented literary classic into a film aimed at audiences around the age of 16. The work that Kumble, who acts as the film’s director and screenwriter, picked was Choderlos de Laclos' 1782 game-changing novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses, probably best known by moviegoers from the 1988 Stephen Frears picture Dangerous Liaisons, starring Glenn Close and John Malkovich.

Winning an Academy Award, whether it is for Best Picture or an unheralded below-the-line category, should never be taken for granted. Not only is an Oscar the highest honor in the industry, but it also recognizes a limited number of artists and craftspeople. Peter O'Toole, Alfred Hitchcock, Robert Mitchum, and Cary Grant, along with being prodigious figures in Hollywood, all share one commonality: they never won a competitive Oscar in their lifetime. Living stars such as Glenn Close, Amy Adams, Tom Cruise, and Willem Dafoe are still chasing that coveted statuette, even after countless nominations. However, no Oscar contender has had quite the bad break that sound mixer Greg P. Russell has experienced. If going 0 for 17 in nominations wasn't defeating enough, Russell had one of his nods stripped away from him by the Academy.

Several MCU characters are drastically different from their Marvel Comics counterparts. For instance, Yondu is less pure-hearted and Mantis is more innocent, while Vulture has a more defined set of morals and Wong has a stronger personality. Whereas the Mandarin and Baron Zemo are much more complex characters in the MCU, Malekith and Taskmaster lack the charisma they possess in the source material. The McU's Ned Leeds plays a bigger role in Peter Parker's life. Meanwhile, Janet van Dyne is nowhere near as influential to the Avengers as Marvel Comics' original Wasp.
While it's inevitable for MCU characters to be different from their various comic book counterparts, some heroes and villains in the Marvel Cinematic Universe stand out due to how different they are from the source material. Hundreds of characters have been introduced throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe's dozens of movies and shows. From Marvel icons like Spider-Man and...

Ever since David Lynch tried bringing Frank Herbert's epic tome to the big screen, "Dune" 1984 has enjoyed a somewhat uneven legacy. Many view it as a rare misstep for Lynch, in part because the film bombed spectacularly at the box office, but mainly because, well, there are a lot of things wrong with "Dune" 1984. That said, the film has some pretty ardent defenders and gained a significant cult following after its release. In fact, as we all await the arrival of the bleak blockbuster that is "Dune: Part Two," Lynch's take on the material seems to be enjoying more of a reassessment than it ever has before, with modern audiences asking whether the director's imaginative sci-fi really was as bad as its initial box office performance suggests.
In many ways, the answer to that question is an emphatic "no." Even contemporary critics agreed that "Dune" 1984 wasn't without its charms.

Nick Cave has released a cover of Édith Piaf’s 1940s hit “La Vie En Rose,” which appears on Jack Antonoff’s soundtrack for the Apple TV+ series The New Look. Stream it below.
On the Antonoff-produced piano cover, Cave takes on the French singer’s signature track in English, giving it a new dimension as he delivers the tender ballad in his distinct voice: “When you speak, angels sing from above/ Everyday words, they turn into love songs.”
Cave’s version of “La Vie En Rose” follows Lana Del Rey’s take on Irving Berlin’s “Blue Skies,” Florence + The Machine’s cover of “White Cliffs of Dover,” and The 1975’s rendition of “Now Is the Hour.”
You can catch the first five episodes of The New Look now. Filmed in Paris, the series centers around Christian Dior, Coco Chanel, and their contemporaries as they launch modern fashion after World War II.

For the fourth consecutive year, we’ve got a firecracker of a Best Actress Oscar race. Lily Gladstone took home the Screen Actors Guild Award on Saturday for “Killers of the Flower Moon” over Emma Stone, who had been on a roll since the two won their respective Golden Globes, having pocketed the Critics Choice and BAFTA Awards for “Poor Things.” Now they each have an industry prize and Best Actress feels like a coin-flip. Gladstone has closed the gap on Stone in the Oscar odds since Saturday. Don’t be surprised if she overtakes the top spot soon. But when the SAG Awards and BAFTAs don’t align in Best Actress, which one has the edge at the Oscars?
Since BAFTA became an Oscar precursor 23 years ago, the Brits and the actors guilds have disagreed 13 times in the category prior to the Battle of the Stones. But not all splits are created equally.

Just 30 minutes after final voting for the Screen Actors Guild Awards wrapped up, I made a last-minute switch in my best actress prediction — from Lily Gladstone in “Killers of the Flower Moon” to Emma Stone in “Poor Things.” Let this be a lesson: Second-guessing yourself is seldom a good idea.
Lily Gladstone made history as the first Native American and Indigenous person to clinch an individual SAG Award for her portrayal of Mollie Burkhart, an Osage woman, in Martin Scorsese’s gripping crime saga. With a lead actress (drama) Golden Globe and a SAG Award now under her belt, Gladstone’s award-season momentum continues to be formidable. Historically, only seven performers have failed to win the Oscar after winning the unique combination of Globe and SAG:
1995: Lauren Bacall (“The Mirror Has Two Faces”) lost to Juliette Binoche 2001: Russell Crowe (“A Beautiful Mind”) lost to Denzel Washington (“Training Day...

Mark Johnson is a veteran producer who won a best picture Oscar in 1989 for Rain Man, one of many collaborations with director Barry Levinson (the pair earned a second best picture nom in 1992 for Bugsy). Just over three decades later, Johnson earned his third Oscar nomination for Focus Features’ The Holdovers, his second film with director Alexander Payne following 2017’s Downsizing.
Set in 1970 over Christmas break at a tony New England boarding school, The Holdovers stars Oscar nominee Paul Giamatti as history teacher Paul Hunnam, who must look after the angsty Angus (newcomer Dominic Sessa) as he cannot travel home to be with family for the holiday. Added to the lonely trio is Oscar nominee Da’Vine Joy Randolph’s Mary Lamb, the school’s grieving cook who recently lost her son in Vietnam.

Welcome to Oscar Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Oscar race — via Slack, of course. This week, we discuss possible upsets at Saturday’s Screen Actors Guild Awards.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! It’s Friday, and as Oscar voters make their final picks, our eyes are turned toward this weekend’s big surge of precursor ceremonies. We won’t have much to say about the Producers Guild Awards (happening Sunday) just because if “Oppenheimer” were to lose the night’s biggest prize somehow, it would stand as one of the biggest upsets in history. So instead, let’s focus on the Screen Actors Guild Awards. The event — streaming for the first time on Netflix after it ran on the streaming service’s YouTube channel last year; ah, memories — could very well just rubber-stamp our expectations for the Oscar winners: “Oppenheimer” for ensemble,...

Amsterdam-based Big Blue is set to produce the upcoming series “Kiss My Feet,” alongside Finnish company Helsinki-filmi.
Selected for Series Mania’s Forum Co-Pro Pitching Sessions, the six-episode drama is created by Daan Gielis and Mark Van De Grift, loosely based on their own experiences.
In the show, successful marketer Max finds himself in a spiritual community in Finland, trying to help out his brother Lucas – apparently, his mysterious guru is interested in building an international brand. Soon, Max and his girlfriend Daphne’s view on family, and trust, will drastically change.
“I know writer Daan Gielis very well, we have worked together before and this project was always simmering somewhere. It’s such an unusual story. Some people are very invested in spiritual communities, others prefer to stay away. What if that division happens within one couple?,” said Big Blue’s CEO Fleur Winters.

[The following story contains spoilers from the first four episodes of Apple TV+’s The New Look.]
The New Look not only marks creator Todd A. Kessler’s first series for Apple TV+, but it’s also his first project in years without his previous writing partners, his brother Glenn and collaborator Daniel Zelman, with whom Kessler co-created Damages and Bloodline.
Instead, Kessler has partnered with veteran film producer Lorenzo Di Bonaventura, through their dB-ak production company, on the series about how Christian Dior, Coco Chanel and other French fashion designers of the time dealt with the struggles of World War II and launched modern fashion. The name refers to how Harper’s Bazaar editor-in-chief Carmel Snow described Dior’s 1947 collection.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter recently, both Kessler and Di Bonaventura were enthusiastic about their new professional pairing. When asked how working on this series was different than his previous endeavors, Kessler was quick to offer praise.

Avengers: Endgame star Josh Brolin may potentially star in the upcoming horror drama Weapons, the anticipated horror film that hails from Barbarian director Zach Cregger.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Brolin has entered negotiations for one of the leading roles in New Line Cinema’s Weapons movie. The high-profile film was supposed to be led by The Last of Us star Pedro Pascal, who exited the project last January due to conflicting filming schedules with Marvel Studios’ Fantastic Four reboot. Should Brolin’s casting push through, this would mark the Oscar-nominated actor’s first horror project in a very long while, after previously starring in films like Mimic, Nightwatch, Hollow Man, and Planet Terror.

Drugs and crime are widely depicted in American TV series, like Snowfall, offering a glimpse into complex social issues and institutional corruption. Shows such as The Shield and Animal Kingdom explore law enforcement's role in perpetuating crime, challenging traditional narratives in the genre. Compelling characters like Franklin Saint in Snowfall and J Cody in Animal Kingdom navigate the thin line between innocence and corruption in crime-ridden worlds.
Following its series finale earlier in 2023, fans are looking for more shows like Snowfall to fill the gap. The crime series focused on the crack cocaine epidemic of the 1980s and how to alter the culture of the time through the character of Franklin Saint (Damson Idris) who is gradually corrupted by the world he finds himself in. Through the complex protagonist and the crime story, fans can find shows like Snowfall that deliver more of what they love.

Fashion and history are a stellar combination in The New Look. The enthralling new Apple TV+ drama about the lives of fashion icons Christian Dior and Coco Chanel during the 1940s and ’50s is one of the best new series of the year. With creator Todd A. Kessler at the helm, that should not be a huge surprise as the man was behind such engaging shows like The Sopranos, Damages, and Bloodline. But it was fellow executive producer Lorenzo Di Bonaventura who was able to lure John Malkovich into the star-studded series.
One of Di Bonaventura's early projects found him doing sound for a documentary about Malkovich, and a strong professional connection grew from there. When The New Look came around, Di Bonaventura immediately thought of Malkovich for the role of Dior colleague/designer Lucien Lelong because of his fine acting but also because the man once launched a men's...

Fashion fans are sure to be scrutinizing every detail of The New Look, the 10-episode Apple TV+ series that tells the story of Christian Dior (played by Ben Mendelsohn) launching his eponymous Paris label with the now-legendary 1947 New Look collection that inspired the production’s title.
It’s among the reasons both creator Todd A. Kessler (Damages, Bloodline) and costume designer Karen Serreau (The Serpent Queen) knew they had to approach Dior’s seminal post-World War II designs with an unrelenting attention to detail. In other words, the participation of the brand that Dior built was essential.
“Dior was very generous in opening up its archives to us,” Serreau tells The Hollywood Reporter. “The way Todd has crafted the story, early on we see Christian talking to an audience at the Sorbonne in 1955, with a runway showing of several designs, and then of course later we see the debut showing of the 1947 collection.

So much comes to mind when you ponder the name John Malkovich. Elan, style, grace. The measured, deliberate way the iconic actor speaks, perhaps? The man possesses a rare depth and presence, and let’s face it, in the frenzied 2020s, that’s downright refreshing. From his Oscar-nominated performance in Dangerous Liaisons and the wickedly trippy romp that was Being John Malkovich to his sinister turn as Cyrus “The Virus” Grissom in the blockbuster Con Air to his turn as Russian oil oligarch Grigor Andalov in Billions, movie and TV audiences love Malkovich. Place in the Heart, Ripley's Game, In the Line of Fire, anyone? We're also thrilled Malkovich is joining The Bear's Ayo Edebiri to headline A24's upcoming horror film, Opus.
It’s no surprise then that the ever-creative and deeply introspective Malkovich once launched and operated his own clothing line back in 2017. His love of fashion no...

At the top of Episode 1 of Apple’s “The New Look,” a title card flashes some weighty words: “This is the story of how creation helped return spirit and life to the world.”
But Todd A. Kessler’s drama series is barely that. “The New Look” is largely insular, despite taking place during a turbulent era that still affects millions around the world, centering figures who certainly left their marks on culture and history — but the vague thesis statement sounds like just that; the kind of sweeping, half-formed idea that a high school student might retroactively tack on to the introduction of an essay.

Since its release in 1987, Fatal Attraction has retained a well-earned slot on film history's lengthy list of best psychological thrillers. Fatal Attraction is also noteworthy for generating discussion regarding cinematic portrayals of gender dynamics and mental health, with detractors voicing opposition to the film's sympathetic treatment of Douglas' character compared to its damning and simplistic framing of Close's as "another female psycho."...

This weekend, the biggest sporting event on the Stateside calendar, the Super Bowl, went down between the San Francisco 49ers and the Taylor Swiftie… Sorry (checks notes), Kansas City Chiefs. And with a massive guaranteed TV audience, that naturally meant companies shelling out not just $7 million for 30 seconds of precious airtime, but millions more to secure celebrity faces and guarantee viewers/clicks. As is usual these days, most of the ads went up days before the event itself, or the spots linked to longer versions online. Here is a roundup of our favourites…

Last night, millions tuned into the 2024 Super Bowl. As has become a capitalist tradition, even people who aren't football fans watched the big game just to see all of the big new commercials, man of which feature some of the biggest stars in Hollywood. In addition to new trailers for upcoming blockbusters like "Deadpool and Wolverine" and "Twisters," there were also some hilarious commercials with Ben Affleck forming a hip-hop group with Matt Damon for Dunkin and Arnold Schwarzenegger reuniting with his "Twins" co-star Danny DeVito for State Farm insurance. Many marketers used the time-tested tactic of deploying star-studded commercials, a phenomenon described by one ad exec as “a celebrity arms race.”
As tracked by YouTube, the No. 1 most-watched spot on Super Bowl Sunday was Tina Fey’s turn for Booking.com, in which the “Saturday Night Live” alum hires “body doubles” to imagine different versions of herself on vacation. The ad featured cameos by her “30 Rock” costars Jane Krakowski and Jack McBrayer, as well as Glenn Close, who impersonated Fey in...
