Paul Auster, the celebrated author of Winter Journal, Sunset Park, Invisible, The Book of Illusions and The New York Trilogy, screenwriter on Wayne Wang’s Smoke and director of Lulu on the Bridge, has died. His friend, Jacki Lyden, confirmed the news to the New York Times. Auster was 77.
Auster’s debut work, a memoir titled The Invention of Solitude, won critical praise.
His stature as one of America’s most prominent authors was cemented with with a series of three loosely connected stories published collectively as The New York Trilogy. Michael Douglas is in terrific form as Benjamin Franklin in Apple TV’s new historical limited series “Franklin” but he isn’t the only actor to emerge with awards whispers whizzing through the air. Veteran actor Eddie Marsan features in a key supporting role as John Adams and delivers one of the finest performances of his career while also shining a new light onto a man that many actors have depicted before.
The limited series follows Franklin’s eight years in France as he tried to persuade King Louis XVI (Tom Pezier) to join the colonies’ cause and aid them in the American Revolutionary War. The scenes between Douglas and Marsan are nothing short of spectacular and Marsan nails his performance as Adams, as noted by critics.
Clint Worthington (Roger Ebert) noted: “Marsan’s energy as Adams is decidedly different from Paul Giamatti’s in Ellis’ original 2008 miniseries—“Franklin” feels...

James Clavell‘s 1975 historical novel of the same name is the basis for Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks‘ “Shōgun,” and it makes for exquisite television. Set at the end of the 16th century in Japan, the FX limited series follows several factions in the five Regents all vying for control and power. Intricate world-building and political machinations combine to make “Shōgun” the next “Game of Thrones.” What the two shows also have in common is a collection of superb performances from their extensive casts. Hiroyuki Sanada, Anna Sawai, and Cosmo Jarvis lead the way in the show’s leading performances but several supporting players could also be up for an Emmy nomination, including Takehiro Hira.
Hira plays Ishido Kazunari, a former peasant who has now become a powerful bushō (a warlord). Kazunari takes charge of one of the five Regents and is the main rival of Sanada’s Lord Yoshii Toranaga.

So, if you loved the charm and supernatural shenanigans in Dead Boy Detectives here are some similar shows you should check out next.

It is absolutely wild to think that Robin Williams got passed over for the part of Remus Lupin in the Harry Potter series because he wasn’t British! Now, while David Thewlis undoubtedly did justice to the character, one can’t help but wonder what kind of magic Williams could have brought to the role. Because one can never accept Williams to be a wrong choice for anything! The Harry Potter crew really missed out on something special with that one silly rule.
Robin Williams in Jumanji (1995) Robin Williams Was Denied the Role of Remus Lupin Because He Wasn’t British
Robin Williams, known for his extensive Hollywood career and a string of iconic roles, is often regarded as one of the few actors universally loved in the industry. Many would assume that Williams could land any role he desires.
However, that wasn’t the case when he wanted to enter the Harry Potter series.

Britain’s contributions to the cinematic form have been vast and glorious. Aardman Animation. Alfred Hitchcock. Olivia Colman. 007. High up that list, too, is the British gangster movie – sure, America may often get the genre limelight with classics like Goodfellas, The Godfather trilogy, and Scarface, but nobody does dark, gritty, violent, and darkly humorous quite like the British. You certainly wouldn’t catch football-hardman-turned-movie-hardman Vinnie Jones rolling down the street with some poor geezer’s bonce trapped in his car window anywhere else, that’s for sure!
And so, with tracksuits on, geezer nicknames doled out, and knuckles dusted, Team Empire assembled a list of the very best British gangster movies ever made. From comedy classics, to bruising turn-of-the-century tales of brutality and crime, to contemporary subversions of the genre formula, we’ve covered all bases. Jeff Goldblum stars as Zeus in the mythological Netflix drama. Kaos. Here’s the trailer for the upcoming show.
Writer Charlie Covell’s most recent show was Truelove, a dark drama for Channel 4 with a terrific ensemble cast including Lindsay Duncan and Clarke Peters. Covell’s other dark comedy drama, The End Of The F***ing World, about a teenager who believes himself to be a psychopath, is now on Netflix and is well worth watching.
Her next show is Kaos, the synopsis reads as follows:
Zeus (Jeff Goldblum) has long enjoyed his status as King of The Gods. Until he wakes up and discovers a wrinkle on his forehead. Neurosis sets in, setting him off on a dangerous, paranoid path. Zeus becomes convinced his fall is coming – and starts to see signs of it everywhere. Zeus’ once reliable brother, Hades (David Thewlis), the God of the Underworld, is secretly...

Charlie Covell might be known for the successful adaptation of the comic series The End of the F***ing World, but the British writer is currently working on a new show for Netflix, which is going to be released later this year. Kaos is an original work by Covell that is going to be a fantastic, mythology-inspired black comedy that will follow the adventures of Ancient Greek gods in a modern setting. Here’s an idea to hit you like a lightning bolt: what if Jeff Goldblum was a Greek god? Frankly, it’s a pitch that’s difficult to turn down – which maybe explains why Netflix didn’t. The streaming service has upcoming drama Kaos on its slate, bringing a contemporary take on Greek mythology – and casting none other than Jurassic Park’s Ian Malcolm as Zeus, the King Of The Gods. Yes, the Chaotician is now the leader of Kaos. The series comes from The End Of The F***ing World writer Charlie Covell, and there’s a stylish first teaser that you can watch right here:
From the very first instance of Goldblum saying “mortals” in his none-more-Goldblum voice (while checking his gold watch), it’s clear that there’s mileage in this premise. Not to mention, his Zeus likes to wear striped tracksuits and open-collar shirts, while living...

You know Zeus. Greek god of thunder, curly hair, luscious big beard, turns into a swan? You’ve seen his face on statues in parks and on tile mosaics behind the counter in kebab shops.
That’s not the Zeus in Netflix’s new fantasy drama Kaos, from Charlie Covell, screenwriter of The End of the F***ing World. As played by Jeff Goldblum, the Zeus of Kaos looks more Tony Soprano than beardy all-father. And home-of-the-gods Mount Olympus? Think a lavishly appointed mansion such as you might see on Selling Sunset instead of a bucolic paradise crawling with nymphs and fauns.
Covell’s vision of Greek myth clearly comes with a modern twist, hence Zeus’ Casio watch and leisure suit collection in the first teaser trailer below:
As Goldblum explained at a recent Netflix slate preview event: “One may say it’s about the Gods, but a different version of the Gods.

"Honor me... that's a command, not a request." Netflix has unveiled a first look teaser trailer for a series titled Kaos, described as a "modern day contemporary retelling of Greek mythology." Jeff Goldblum is Zeus, the King of the Gods. All-powerful, cruel, occasionally benevolent... he has no idea that the plot to take him down has begun. From the writer of “The End of the F*cking World” and the producers of Chernobyl. Kaos is a mythological dark-comedy series created by Charlie Covell. The series revolves around six humans as they discover their connection to each other and to a long standing ancient prophecy while they deal with corrupt and arrogant gods of the Greek mythology. Wonder Woman has the distinction of being one of the better film series in the Dceu, which ultimately collapsed and is awaiting its reboot at the hands of James Gunn. Patty Jenkins and Gal Gadot were able to craft a stunning narrative, one that talked about themes of war and peace, that painted humanity in a fundamentally flawed light.
Gal Gadot in Wonder Woman
However, despite the praises that were heaped on the film, one pivotal scene in the movie undoes the themes and the motifs that the film sets up, destroying what the film was trying to say. Wonder Woman as a film lays all the blame for the war at the feet of the human race, waxing poetic about humanity’s capacity for inflicting suffering. However, one particular scene flips the script completely, changing what the film had set up all this time.

After spending decades in development hell, a live-action adaptation of the Neil Gaiman comic book series The Sandman actually made it into production and was released into the world as a Netflix series in August of 2022. (Read our review Here.) Season 2 of the show went into production last year, then had to be put on pause for a while due to the writers and actors strikes. Thankfully, The Sandman season 2 was able to resume production as soon as those strikes came to an end – and now, during an interview with Collider, cast member Kirby Howell-Baptiste has confirmed that the new episodes will bring more Death to the screen. Death being the character she plays on the show.
Of course, it wouldn’t be difficult for the new season to feature “more Death,” since Death was only in one episode of the first season. But Howell-Baptiste said that in addition to being present in more episodes,...

The CW is spicing up its lineup with an exciting twist on the classic Sherlock Holmes saga. They’re rolling out ‘Sherlock & Daughter,’ a fresh take that pairs the iconic detective with an unexpected partner – his possible daughter. David Thewlis steps into Sherlock’s shoes, while Blu Hunt plays Amelia, the young American who might just be his offspring. After the mysterious murder of her mother, Amelia discovers her father could be the legendary sleuth himself. Together, they dive into a whirlwind of global conspiracies and personal mysteries.
According to Deadline, the series is not just about crime-solving. It’s about the dynamic between two very different characters thrown together by fate. Dougray Scott adds to the excitement as Moriarty, Holmes’ arch-nemesis, ensures the stakes are always high. ‘Sherlock & Daughter’ isn’t your typical detective show; it’s about family, mystery, and the clash of cultures.

In the eight-episode series, Thewlis is an older Sherlock Holmes, less confident and out of his comfort zone. The renowned detective finds himself mysteriously unable to investigate a sinister case without risking the lives of his closest friends.
Meanwhile young American, Amelia (Blu Hunt best-known for The Originals and The Mutants) learns her missing father may be the esteemed detective, after her mother’s shocking and unexplainable murder.

The New Sherlock Holmes In Sherlock & Daughter Series (Picture Credit: Facebook)
Many people worldwide are waiting for an update on Sherlock Season 5. The British mystery crime series stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman in the lead roles. The last season was premiered in 2017. Many have come to acceptance that there won’t be a fifth season. Well, chances are that’s true. But The CW has announced a spin-off series titled Sherlock & Daughter, which might excite the fans of the fictional detective.
As reported by Deadline, the series will have Sherlock, a young girl named Amelia, as his daughter and even Moriarty. So it’s not going to be a melodramatic father-daughter series. The premise will be about a young American girl, Amelia, arriving in London after her mother’s murder. She learns that her father is a famous detective. Brad Schwartz, President of Entertainment at The CW, has “ambitious” goals.
As The CW moves away from only serving young adult audiences towards rivaling the Big Four broadcast networks – ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC – Schwartz knows he needs to find a hit to do that.
This, after all, is the man credited with helping Schitt’s Creek become an Emmy-winning smash.
“We recognize where we’re coming from. We’re the underdogs competing against Titans. But ultimately what we’re striving for is to have everyone stop writing big four networks and start writing big five network. We know it’s going to take some time, but that’s the goal,” he said at the top of his TCA press tour presentation.

Wild Cards, a Canadian police procedural, has become a surprise hit for The CW.
The series, which stars Grey’s Anatomy’s Giacomo Gianniotti, Riverdale’s Vanessa Morgan and Jason Priestley, launched in January.
It has been averaging over 500,000 in the live overnights, per Nielsen, which The CW President of Entertainment Brad Schwartz says will likely go to around 1M over the first seven days.
This is what constitutes a hit for the network. “That’s a nice success for us. If we can do seven nights a week with a million viewers, that would be goal number one, then two million,” he told Deadline.

Schwartz added that he has already begun discussing a second season of the show, which comes from Blink49 Studios.

Big news for fans of All American and Walker!
The CW announced its spring slate of shows today, and both series will be returning to our screens sooner than expected.
All American is the CW's most-watched show, so it was no surprise that the announcement began with an update on the network's popular football drama.
The saga of star wide receiver Spencer James is set to return for its sixth season on April 1.
Today's announcement did not provide any details about the new season's plot, but it did confirm All American's status as the network’s #1 series among Adults 18-49, the most watched series on digital, and had the largest total audience across all platforms.
So yeah, execs might be even more excited about the return of All American than the show's fans are.

“We’re ready for people to stop writing about the Big Four networks and start writing the Big Five,” announced Brad Schwartz, The CW’s president of entertainment, at the top of a Thursday morning meeting with TV press.
It’s an obvious aspiration for broadcast’s long-suffering stepchild, but the timing is a bit odd. The cachet of the “Big Four” — ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC — diminishes more and more each year, rendering the term more of a nostalgic catchphrase than an accurate representation of the true TV power brokers in the age of streaming saturation. Still, growth and a diversified (and, often, less expensive) programming portfolio is exactly what Nexstar Media Group has pursued after completing its acquisition of The CW in 2022. That’s involved a big gamble of the Saudi-backed Liv Golf league, canceling all but four scripted series in the inherited CW slate and banking big on acquisitions.

The CW met the Television Critics Assn. for the first time since its ownership and brand makeover — and both president Dennis Miller and entertainment president Brad Schwartz came armed with a message: The CW wants to be considered a “Big 5” network, right alongside ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox.

Note: This story contains spoilers from the “Fargo” Season 5 finale.
As touching as Juno Temple’s role on “Fargo” may have been for fans of the FX anthology series, it’s a relationship that goes both ways. The actress described her time on Noah Hawley’s anthology series as both “terrifying” and “one of the most extraordinary experiences” of her career.
“Characters like Dot [do] not come along very often, definitely not to me. I’m eternally grateful to Noah [Hawley] for having the faith in me to play her,” Temple told TheWrap after the crime-drama’s Season 5 finale on Tuesday. “She’s made me a much, much more aware, insightful, maybe even motherly woman. Also, it was something that challenged me in a way that I want to be challenged. I want to feel terrified every day before I go to work because I want to make people proud. This job did that in spades.

Every now and then an esteemed actor from the posh theater world decides to make the move over to movies and television to slum it with us nerds. When Carrie Coon did so in 2014 with dual TV/movie roles in Gone Girl and The Leftovers, the unwashed entertainment masses all had the same reaction: “Now where have you been all our lives?!?”
After a successful career treading the boards on Broadway, Coon is now a pop culture mainstay and we couldn’t be happier about it. The Copley, Ohio-native absolutely shines in any role she takes, no matter how prominent or minor. From Nora Durst on The Leftovers to Gloria Burgle on Fargo season 3 and beyond, Coon quite simply goes hard in the paint.
Next up, Coon will be introduced to an even wider audience than ever before with the announcement that she’ll be headlining season 3 of HBO’s The White Lotus.

FX’s “Fargo” is facing some tough competition at the Golden Globes this year in the form of Netflix’s “Beef.” Noah Hawley‘s anthology limited series follows a different cast and storyline every season with the latest installment, the fifth season, featuring the likes of Jon Hamm, Juno Temple, and Jennifer Jason Leigh. This story follows a kidnapping gone wrong that leads to implications for many.
This season has fared well, garnering three Golden Globe nominations: Best Limited Series/TV Movie, Best Limited Series/TV Movie Actor for Hamm, and Best Limited Series/TV Movie Actress for Temple. These two acting bids add to the Golden Globes history of “Fargo,” which has often done well in snagging nominations for its cast. Here’s the breakdown.
The first season saw Billy Bob Thornton win Best Limited Series/TV Movie in 2015 while co-star Martin Freeman was also nominated in the same category.

As we enter December, you’ll find the television conveyor belt tends to slow down, if not stop completely. The good news is that, instead of simply circling back after the holidays, Apple TV+ is offering subscribers more worthwhile shows to keep them occupied in the evening hours after the sun has gone down and we’ve lost all track of time. This week, it’s the newest season of “Slow Horses,” a British spy drama based on a series of books by author Mick Herron. The darkly comedic series stars Oscar winner Gary Oldman as Jackson Lamb, the clever but irascible leader of a group of MI5 agents who’ve all been professionally exiled for screwing up on the job but still manage to find themselves in the middle of missions that have real stakes.

Neil Gaiman also shared a statement, celebrating both the show being able to resume production and the 35th anniversary of the release of the first issue of Sandman.
