The Grand Budapest Hotel is arguably Wes Anderson's best marriage of style, substance, whimsy, and thematic maturity. The film explores the loss of innocence, transitioning from lighthearted whimsy into melancholy. It is meticulously crafted and performed and boasts a visually stunning look and a stacked ensemble cast.
Few filmmakers today have as devoted a fanbase as Wes Anderson. His perfectly symmetrical shot composition, meticulous use of color and production/costume design, eclectic soundtracks, and whimsical tones immediately distinguish his works, making him a modern filmmaker who can genuinely be called an auteur. However, his movies can admittedly run the risk of being a bit off-putting to those unfamiliar with his vibes, and some of his recent, more experimental works like The Life Aquatic and The French Dispatch run the risk of feeling more style than substance.
However, one of his best films, The Grand Budapest Hotel, is celebrating its 10th anniversary.

Oppenheimer's multiple Oscar wins put lead actor Cillian Murphy in an exclusive actor club that should be easier to get into. Only five other biopics have won Best Picture and Best Actor at the Academy Awards prior to Oppenheimer. With biopics often winning Best Picture, it should be more common that they also take home Best Actor trophies.
Oppenheimer won big at the 96th annual Academy Awards, and its Oscars achievement puts Cillian Murphy in a very exclusive actor club — one that should, frankly, be easier to get into. It was no surprise that Oppenheimer collected multiple Oscar nominations in 2024, as Christopher Nolan's biopic was one of the most talked-about and highest-grossing movies of 2023. Many 2024 Best Picture predictions suggested Oppenheimer would take home the gold in that category. And with a total of 13 nominations overall, it was expected to take home multiple Oscars.
This proved an accurate analysis of Oppenheimer's chances,...

Leo Woodall won’t forget his time on set of The White Lotus season two anytime soon. The actor said this week his experience on the show felt like “one big holiday.”
“It was one of those shows where, because there were so many characters and so many storylines, there were so many days off,” Woodall told People, adding that the free time meant he and his co-stars spent a lot of time vacationing together.
Woodall played Jack in The White Lotus season two, a British boy who flirted with Haley Lu Richardson’s Portia and assisted his non-biological uncle Quentin (Tom Hollander) in a plan to murder Jennifer Coolidge’s Tanya. The second season of Mike White’s anthology show took place at a resort in Sicily, where the cast lived for several weeks during filming in 2022.
“It does feel like a world away now,” Woodall said of his time in Italy.

The 2023 Emmy Awards finally took place on Monday night, with series like The Bear, Beef and Succession winning big.
The ceremony, hosted by Anthony Anderson and held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, was postponed for months due to the Hollywood writers’ and actors’ strikes. Thus, to be considered for an award, a television show, limited series or made-for-tv film must have been released between June 1, 2022, and May 31, 2023.
The National Active Members of the Television Academy voted on the awards from August 18 to August 28, 2023.
Succession walked away with seven wins for its final season, including Best Drama and recognition for actors Kieran Culkin, Sarah Snook and Matthew Macfadyen. The show also received awards for Best Directing for a Drama Series for Mark Mylod and Best Writing for a Drama Series for Jesse Armstrong.

‘Succession’ wins for Outstanding Drama Series at the 75Th Emmy Awards (Photo © 2024 Fox Media LLC)
In a normal year, the 2023 Emmy Awards would have actually taken place in 2023. But last year was anything but normal in Hollywood, and the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes caused the award ceremony’s postponement to January 15, 2024.
Fans of Succession, The Bear, and Beef had a lot to celebrate as Emmy voters threw most of the awards in their direction. Succession and The Bear tied with six wins each, and Beef wasn’t far behind with five.
Highlights included Christina Applegate’s surprise appearance on stage to a standing ovation, Carol Burnett presenting to Quinta Brunson (the first Black actress to win as Lead Actress in a Comedy since 1981), and Niecy Nash-Betts’ powerful acceptance speech for Dahmer. There were also cast reunions and Sir Elton John finally received the E portion of Egot for his Farewell From Dodger Stadium special.

Way back in (checks notes) July last year, we reported on the Emmy nominations, noting that the strikes could delay it. Welp, delay it they did, and the 2023 ceremony has just happened in Los Angeles on Monday night. The ceremony, hosted by actor and comedian Anthony Anderson, had little reference to the strikes, but did dig back into TV history given that it was the 75th ceremony. Recent history, though, was more on voters' minds as Beef, Succession and The Bear continued their small screen awards domination.
Succession and The Bear nabbed six trophies each across acting, directing and writing categories, while Beef took home five. Other winners included Jennifer Coolidge (for The White Lotus) and Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story's Niecy Nash-Betts.

On Monday evening, the biggest names in television — and Anthony Anderson’s mom, Doris — congregated at Los Angeles’ Peacock Theater for the 2023 Emmy Awards. But with so many A-listers on hand, the cameras could only catch so much for viewers at home. Here’s what they missed:
— It appears that that capital T talent has been velvet curtained from the countless plebes (cough, cough, writers and executives) desperately trying to get a drink in the Peacock lobby. There are several exceptions. White Lotus nominee F. Murray Abraham — not canceled for everybody — stops for multiple selfies before making his way into the theater.
— And, since last we Emmy’d in this building (Rip Microsoft theater!), they’ve installed those no-check out snack stations where they just Know what you take, like the airport bodegas or those apocalyptic Amazon Fresh supermarkets. Succession director (and, later, Emmy winner) Mark Mylod, terminally polite, takes...

The Emmys finally happened.
After a four-month delay due to the WGA and SAG strikes, the 2023 Primetime Emmys took place January 15 in Los Angeles. The big takeaway? There may just be way too much TV for Emmy voters to watch, so much like the noms suggested back in July 2023, winners during the ceremony were mainly confined to a few big hits.
Those hits were well-deserved, however: “Succession” closed out its final Emmys with six wins, including the big one for Outstanding Drama Series. “The Bear” made a huge impression out of the gate, notching an Outstanding Comedy Series win for its first season, as well as individual wins for Jeremy Allen White, Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Ayo Edebiri.
“Beef” likewise cleaned up. The buzzy Netflix project scored wins for Outstanding Limited Series as well as individual wins for Ali Wong, Steven Yeun, and creator Lee Sung Jin (also an IndieWire Honors recipient!

When you’re hot, you’re hot, and Matthew Macfadyen — as himself and in character — is on fire.
The “Succession” star took home his second Emmy Award Monday night, winning the category for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama series. Macfadyen has been nominated for an Emmy three times for his portrayal of Tom Wambsgans on the HBO drama. He first won in 2022, and in the past eight days, he’s won a second Emmy, earned a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination, and taken home the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor.
As fans of “Succession” already know (and spoiler alert for those who don’t), his character also ended up as the CEO of Waystar Royco — out-maneuvering his wife, Shiv (Sarah Snook), her brothers Roman (Kieran Culkin) and Kendall (Jeremy Strong), as well as the many other aspiring kings new boss Lukas Matsson (Alexander Skarsgård) was considering. The 75th Primetime Emmy Awards aired January 15 on Fox with actor Anthony Anderson serving as host for the first time. After months of strike-induced delays, the creatives behind the most revered shows of the 2022-2023 season finally learned the results of their TV academy bids as trophies were delved out in 26 categories covering comedy, drama, limited, variety, and competition series.
As usual, this year’s primetime ceremony occurred one week after the corresponding Creative Arts Emmys – a two-night event primarily focused on artistic and technical accomplishments. Freshman HBO drama “The Last of Us” came out on top there, with eight wins from 19 nominations. The comedies that scored the most victories (four each) were newcomers “The Bear” (FX) and “Wednesday” (Netflix), while the Netflix limited series “Beef” finished with three wins. Heading into Monday’s main event, “Beef” also stood as the limited format nominations leader with nine major bids, but...

Simona Tabasco's success in The White Lotus paved the way for her upcoming horror movie Immaculate, which will unite her with Sydney Sweeney, another breakout star of the show. Immaculate is a psychological horror set in an Italian convent, while The White Lotus focuses on social commentary. However, fans of the show will be excited to see Tabasco and Sweeney together in a new project. Tabasco has had a successful career in Italian film and television before her role in The White Lotus, further showcasing her talent and versatility as an actress.
Following her success in The White Lotus, Simona Tabasco's next major project was always going to attract attention, yet it turns out that the Italian-born star's big-screen horror debut is even more exciting, thanks to a connection with Mike White's hit drama. On the surface, the two projects don't seem to have a great deal in common.

Inside MPTF’s Evening Before Benefit with Stars of ‘Succession,’ ‘Ted Lasso’ and ‘Abbott Elementary’
Who doesn’t love a group photo packed with big-name actors?
A slew of stars came together to say cheese and help raise north of $2.5 million in West Hollywood on Saturday night at the Motion Picture & Television Fund’s 17th annual Evening Before benefit. Co-chaired by Quinta Brunson and Bob Odenkirk, the annual event takes place ahead of the Emmy Awards, and this weekend’s installment shifted to the new year to follow the TV Academy’s celebration due to the dual strikes last summer.
“We’ve had quite a year, and this organization and its fundraiser has helped many weather the storm,” said Brunson. Added Odenkirk, “I’m thrilled to be a co-chair of MPTF’s Evening Before benefit with Quinta. MPTF really stepped up during a very challenging year to support the entertainment community, and I’m proud to be a part of a fundraiser that will help to sustain that vital support.

Heading into the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards, a total of 30 supporting actors and actresses are nominated for their work on 11 different continuing series, all of which consist of between one and six seasons. When it comes to predicting the four winners, it helps to analyze their predecessors with emphasis on how long their shows had been running. Over the course of seven decades, TV academy voters have shown significant preference toward newer (but not too new) featured performances, and that is largely reflected in their current slate of nominations.
Whereas the luckiest lead actors typically win for brand new comedy or drama programs, supporting players usually fare a bit better immediately following their shows’ sophomore seasons. This type of victory accounts for 21.7% of all of those that have occurred within the four featured categories, with recent examples including Alex Borstein (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”), Julia Garner (“Ozark”), and Brett Goldstein...

The White Lotus season 3 will be set in Thailand with a mostly new ensemble cast. Five new cast members have been added for season 3, but no details on their characters are available yet. The new cast members are Milos Bikovic, Christian Friedel, Morgana O’Reilly, Lek Patravadi, and Shalini Peiris.

During the 2022 Creative Arts and Primetime Emmys ceremonies, two vastly different age records were broken as the acting victors accepted their prizes. First, 28-year-old Lee Yoo-mi (“Squid Game”) supplanted Samira Wiley as the youngest recipient of either drama guest award, and then Jean Smart (70) improved upon her own oldest comedy actress winner record by clinching a second consecutive trophy for “Hacks.” With one age record having already been smashed at last weekend’s Creative Arts Awards, five more are up for grabs heading into the big primetime show.
Firstly, congratulations are in order for newly crowned Best Drama Guest Actress champ Storm Reid (“The Last of Us”), who, at 20, went from being her category’s third youngest nominee to its youngest winner. In fact, she is the all-time youngest recipient of any guest acting Emmy, also taking that distinction from Lee, who in turn usurped Justin Timberlake. Two more “The Last of Us...

Jonathan Frakes' 1998 film "Star Trek: Insurrection" was about a remote planet called Ba'ku, the home of a gentle colony of farmers who, thanks to a quirk of the planet's radioactive rings, can live healthily for centuries. A shady species called the Son'a have teamed up with Starfleet to harvest the radiation from the Ba'ku homeworld and forcibly relocate the citizens. Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) feels that the forced relocation of the Ba'ku is morally wrong under the circumstances, and stages the titular insurrection.
The film climaxed with Picard and the Son'a captain Ru'afo (F. Murray Abraham) fighting one another for control of the radiation collector. Picard was in his 60s and Ru'afo's body and face had been ruined by many years of cosmetic surgery. While Picard and Ru'afo engaged in a fistfight, Commander Riker (Frakes) battled a Son'a ship using scooped-up explosive gases as a weapon. On the planet below,...

Many iconic filmmakers may have had the term "auteur" bandied about in relation to their work without truly ever living up to that prestigious designation. However, in modern cinema, there's no doubting that the brilliant director and writer Wes Anderson has earned his stripes as one.
To be considered an auteur in its truest sense requires a director to stamp such a unique style onto a film that it can only exist as a byproduct of that person's individual mind, and no one else's. In simpler terms, it consists of a kind of artistry that only one person could can of and execute in that manner. Yet, with today's modern technology, such a notion seems almost impossible.
Artificial intelligence has progressed at a frighteningly rapid pace in the last decade, with it now having practically limitless applications. As a disruptor of the creative world, AI can now generate unique artwork,...

Ewan McGregor is set to receive the Honorary Dragon Award at this year’s Göteborg Film Festival in Sweden.
The “Star Wars” and “Trainspotting” star will attend the festival to collect the honor and participate in an Actors Talk. He will also be present at the Nordic premiere of his latest film, Niclas Larsson’s “Mother, Couch,” and a retrospective of his most notable films will be featured at the festival.
“Ewan McGregor is an androgynous symbol of the Cool Britannia era, a romantic icon for the millennial generation and a saber-swinging franchise holder in the pop-cultural center of the galaxy. But above all, he is an incredibly skilled artist,” Göteborg Film Festival artistic director Jonas Holmberg said in a statement. “By mastering stylized extravagance, literary precision and nuanced realism with the same relaxed self-evidence, Ewan McGregor has shown that he is one of the truly great actors of our time.

Jonathan Frakes' 1998 film "Star Trek: Insurrection" is hardly the most celebrated of the 13 extant "Star Trek" movies. The film wasn't terribly well-reviewed when it was released, and a general fan consensus seems to dictate that it may be the least of the four films based on "Star Trek: The Next Generation."
Notably, "Insurrection" looks cheap. The bulk of the film's action takes place on the Ba'ku homeworld, but the filmmakers were unable to do anything to make it look appropriately alien. The exteriors were filmed in Thousand Oaks, California, as well as the Sierra Nevada mountain range, and, well, it looks like they just shot the film in California. Additionally, the Ba'ku were given no alien makeup, leaving them looking like regular old people. Worst of all, the Ba'ku costume designs were unbearably boring, as everyone was draped in loose-fitting, off-white hippie-wear that even mannequins would be embarrassed by.

Throughout "Star Trek," Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) has engaged in precious few romances. Early in "Star Trek: The Next Generation," he reunited with an old flame (Michelle Phillips) in the episode "We'll Always Have Paris," and it was implied that he had a fling years earlier with a lawyer (Amanda McBroom) in "The Measure of a Man," but those relationships concluded before "Next Generation" began. Of course, Picard had a wild dalliance with Vash (Jennifer Hetrick) in "Captain's Holiday," lived out a life with his imagined wife (Margot Rose) in "The Inner Light," had a time-travel fling with a classmate (J.C. Brandy) in "Tapestry," and had a very palpable romance with Lieutenant Commander Nella Darren (Wendy Hughes) in "Lessons."
Oh yes, and Picard was very clearly attracted to Lwaxana Troi (Majel Barrett), and throughout "Next Generation," Picard and Dr. Crusher (Gates McFadden) shared a professional regard through a definite romantic undercurrent.

Curb Your Enthusiasm has come to an end after twenty four years, writer and star Larry David has confirmed.
Of all the sitcoms in the history of television, few, if any, have come anywhere near the level of cringe inducing awkwardness seen in Larry David’s long running sitcom Curb Your Enthusiasm.
Playing a version of himself, David, forever deadpan and defiant, manages to break just about every social convention there is as he attempts to go about his life as a successful television writer. Starring alongside David were Jeff Garlin, Cheryl Hines, Susie Essman and J.B. Smoove.
Curb is also notable for its wide array of memorable guest turns, which have included Mel Brooks, Martin Scorsese, Ben Stiller, Christian Slater, Rosie O’Donnell, Michael J. Fox, Ricky Gervais, Lin-Manuel Miranda, F. Murray Abraham and David Schwimmer.
There was also a Seinfeld reunion season, which saw Jerry Seinfeld, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Jason Alexander...

Twelve seasons is a pretty, pretty, pretty good run for any television series, and it’s officially time for Curb Your Enthusiasm to take a bow. That’s right, folks. Curb Your Enthusiasm Season 12 will be the show’s last hurrah.
Confirmation for the end of Curb Your Enthusiasm comes from Larry David, who says he wants to return to his natural, lovable personality and engage in humanitarian work to celebrate the show’s end. That last part is a joke, of course. Right, Larry?
“As Curb comes to an end, I will now have the opportunity to finally shed this ‘Larry David’ persona and become the person God intended me to be – the thoughtful, kind, caring, considerate human being I was until I got derailed by portraying this malignant character,” said David. “And so ‘Larry David,’ I bid you farewell. Your misanthropy will not be missed. And for those...

This is Day 116 of the SAG-AFTRA strike.
SAG-AFTRA picket lines in New York City on Monday doubled as vigils, with striking actors waiting for their union’s leaders to weigh in on the “last, best, and final offer” package that the studios and streamers delivered Saturday.
“We were handed 500 pages,” SAG-AFTRA strike captain Sue Berch said Monday in her traditional stemwinder of a closing speech for morning pickets outside Netflix and Warner Bros. Discovery offices in Manhattan. “So [negotiators] are going through it to make sure they keep track of everything that’s in there. Trust them.”
“‘Last, best, and final,’ my ass!” one picketer shouted, prompting whoops and cheers. Berch agreed, saying, “It isn’t final ’til we say it’s final.”

Both Captain Archer and Captain Picard unexpectedly fall for women from pre-industrial worlds while defending them from hostile aliens. Captain Archer's romance with Riann is similar to Captain Picard's romance with Anij in Star Trek: Insurrection. The behavior of Captain Archer, leaving Riann and not promising to return, follows the traditional playbook of Star Trek captains who have no permanent relationships and are devoted to their starships.
Captain Jonathan Archer (Scott Bakula) has a romance in Star Trek: Enterprise season 1 that essentially copies Captain Jean-Luc Picard's (Patrick Stewart) romantic tryst in Star Trek: Insurrection. In Enterprise season 1, episode 9, "Civilization," the Nx-01 Enterprise investigates the Akaali, a pre-industrial humanoid civilization whose population's water supply is being poisoned by another alien race, the Malurans. As Captain Archer, Subcommander T'Pol (Jolene Blalock), Ensign Hoshi Sato (Linda Park), and Commander Trip Tucker (Connor Trinneer) get to the bottom of what's happening with the Akaali,...

For decades, horror movies have been chilling and thrilling millions of fans who love little more than being scared to the edge of their seats. With a career that goes back nearly 50 years, director Jean-Jacques Annaud was bound to run into some troublesome actors. But the French filmmaker has been relatively lucky – and it wasn’t Brad Pitt or Jude Law or Two Brothers’ Kumal and Sangha that gave him headaches, it was F. Murray Abraham.
Speaking at the Lumière Film Festival in Lyon, France (via Deadline), Jean-Jacques Annaud said that working with F. Murray Abraham on 1986’s The Name of the Rose – a 4K presentation of which was screened at the festival – was a nightmare compared to what he expected from his co-star. “Everybody warned me that Sean Connery was impossible and an extremely difficult character. He was an absolute dream and I got on with him fantastically…My only bad memory of an actor across my whole career, and I’ve directed, I think, thousands of actors, was F. Murray Abraham, who played the inquisitor…...
