Take it outside, Jake Gyllenhaal — there was already a “Road House 2.” And it was awful.
The Og “Road House” starring Patrick Swayze came out in 1989 and made $30 million at the box office — a nice return on investment back in the day. Naturally, MGM struck while the iron was hot: a scant 17 years later, the studio released a straight-to-dvd sequel, “Road House 2: Last Call” (2006). Exactly 17 more years later, I went straight to Vudu to buy it. I did not get a good Roi on my $9.99.
Look, I knew what I was getting into. Like you, I didn’t realize there was a “Road House 2” until Doug Liman made a “Road House 3.”
Still the only “Road House” to get a theatrical release, the Swayze flick ended up doing most of its damage on home entertainment. The film isn’t well-reviewed — it has a 41 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 36 on...

Kevin Costner’s hugely ambitious western saga arrives this summer: here’s the new trailer, but no UK release yet.
Regular readers of this site may be already aware just how much I’m looking forward to the most ambitious Kevin Costner project in years. It’s Horizon: An American Saga, a series of four films that Costner is part-funding. Just as with his last directorial effort, the brilliant 2003 western Open Range, he’s independently funded the movie, and brought in distributors afterwards.
In the US, it’s New Line Cinema – and thus Warner Bros – that’s going to be releasing the first two films, both of which are coming out this summer. The first lands in June, the second lands in August, and both are getting US cinema releases.
As far as I’ve been able to ascertain, and heck I’ve been looking, there’s been no deal...

Long before he sauntered into the role of John Dutton III and seized the reins of the family ranch on Yellowstone, Kevin Costner was one of the most in-demand filmmakers and leading men in Hollywood.
Now, the Oscar- and Emmy-winner is ditching the small screen and returning to his roots.
In what might be his most ambitious project to date, Costner has directed a sprawling Western epic that will be released in theaters in two parts this summer.
This is a man who was born to saddle up and gaze into the camera from beneath a wide-brimmed Stetson, so naturally, Costner will be playing the lead role in both films.
The first trailer dropped today, and anticipation among Costner devotees and horse opera fanatics is at an all-time high.
So, without further ado, here's everything we know about Horizon: An American Saga.

Kevin Costner on Monday shared on socials a first trailer for Horizon, the two-part Western epic that played a role in his growing frustrations with his Yellowstone experience.

Part one of “Horizon: An American Saga,” the multi-film Western epic that Kevin Costner left “Yellowstone” to make, will hit theaters on June 28, with part two to follow on August 16. Warner Bros. released a trailer for the two-part film on Monday.
The trailer promises a sprawling, colorful, violent Western film about Manifest Destiny. It’s about the settling of the titular town during the years of the Civil War, as the American frontier pushes westward and settlers come into conflict with the people indigenous to the land. “There’s no army on this Earth that are going to stop those wagons coming,” a Union Army officer played by Costner’s “Yellowstone” co-star Danny Huston warns in something like the trailer’s thesis statement.
Costner wrote the script for “Horizon” with Jon Baird, produces with Howard Kaplan and Mark Gillard, directs, and stars. It’s his first time directing a film since 2003’s “Open Range,...

Kevin Costner has revealed the trailer for the first installment of Horizon: An American Saga, his upcoming multi-part, self-funded western. Horizon Part One is set to hit theaters on June 28th, 2024, with part two following just weeks later on August 16th.
Horizon has been Costner’s passion project for decades, having first begun working on it in 1988. He wrote directed, and stars in the film — and also largely financed it himself (apparently by mortgaging his house). It’s also the reason why Costner decided to depart Yellowstone.
After securing a distribution deal with Warner Bros. and New Line in 2022, Costner left the set of Yellowstone and headed to Utah, where he shot the first two installments of Horizon in succession. Depending on the success of those films, Costner hopes to make two more installments.

Few Hollywood stars alive today are as closely associated with the Western as Kevin Costner. From Dances With Wolves, to Open Range, to Wyatt Earp and beyond, he’s long seemed at home in the Old West, telling stories of American history. Not to mention, in recent years he’s rustled up millions of viewers as the figurehead of Yellowstone, one of the biggest TV phenomenons of the last decade. But it’s now that he’s about to unleash his all-out Western epic – a long-gestating passion project titled Horizon: An American Saga, in which he stars as well as directing, co-writing (along with Jon Baird), and produces. It is, in fact, two feature-length movies – actually set to be four, if he continues to the full fruition of his vision – to be released cinematically this summer. And he’s invested in this in a huge way – literally, since it’s...

Sorting through America’s history is a Herculean task. Humans built the nation with blood, sweat, and tears, watering the soil with memory, pain, and perseverance. Today, Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga trailer explores the settlement of America’s Western frontier from the Indigenous groups who blessed the land to those who occupied it by force. Horizon will be Kevin Costner‘s first time directing a movie since Open Range in 2003. He also busted out his directing chops for The Postman and Dances with Wolves, the latter of which earned him an Academy Award for Best Director.
Kevin Costner’s Horizon will “span 15 years in the settlement of America’s Western frontier, and focus on both the settlers as well as the Indigenous groups that first occupied the land.”
Here’s the official synopsis for Horizon: An American Saga courtesy of Warner Bros.:

Hollywood is going through a two-parter movie phase right now. In the past two years, we've seen big franchises like "Fast & Furious," "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse," and "Mission: Impossible" all split sequels into two parts, while franchise hopefuls like "Dune" and "Rebel Moon" have also become two-parter movies. Even "Wicked" is hoping to tell its story in two movies. On paper, most of those decisions make some sense: Those are big genre movies with loads of story (and a lot of potential money to be made from extending that story), so rather than make one very long movie, they've opted for two. What is much more surprising is seeing a Western join that club. But that isn't stopping Kevin Costner from turning his passion project "Horizon: An American Saga" into one of the biggest box office gambles of 2024. This is Costner's first directorial effort in 21 years, and much like in 2003 with "Open Range,...

Horizon: An American Saga promises a star-studded cast and epic scale for a cinematic event. Kevin Costner originally hoped to shoot four films back-to-back, but the Hollywood strikes force him to stop after two, with the first chapter's release set for June. Costner's return to Western film direction after 21 years may mark a significant comeback for the genre.
A new look at Horizon: An American Saga has been released online. Written and directed by Kevin Costner and co-written by Jon Baird, the upcoming epic American Western boasts a star-studded cast comprised of Costner, Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Jena Malone, Michael Rooker, Danny Huston, Luke Wilson, Isabelle Fuhrman, and Jamie Campbell Bower, among others. The ambitious project will be released in two chapters, both set to arrive in cinemas this year.
In anticipation of its full trailer debut tomorrow, Warner Bros. has released a short teaser on X/Twitter to announce a forthcoming trailer.

Kevin Costner's passion project, Horizon, will be a pivotal release for his late-stage career and his return to directing after over twenty years. The release of Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 2 shortly after the first film could either build up anticipation or backfire for Costner's ambitious Western movie series. Taylor Sheridan's spinoff projects, 6666 and 2024, will expand the Yellowstone franchise and carry high stakes in maintaining the prestige and popularity of the original show.
Kevin Costner and Taylor Sheridan have partnered for five seasons of Yellowstone, but the next few years will see them competing with various Western projects. Sheridan, who previously wrote films like Hell or High Water and Sicario, developed Yellowstone for its 2018 release, and it's since become one of the biggest TV shows on television. While most would say The Untouchables is the movie that made Kevin Costner a star, in many ways, Orion’s No Way Out solidified his stardom. The film was shot before The Untouchables, with him scoring the leading role after being cast by Lawrence Kasdan in the Western classic Silverado (as a way to make up for cutting all his scenes from The Big Chill). No Way Out was the first time he headlined a big film on his own, and it was the perfect showcase. If gave him a chance to do action, drama and romance, with his backseat love scene with Sean Young noted as one of the steamiest in Hollywood history up to that point.
It was part of an essential three-movie deal that Costner signed with the now-defunct Orion Pictures, which included Bull Durham and Dances With Wolves, both of which helped cement him as one...

Netflix's Lift received poor reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, but Sam Worthington has another highly anticipated project in 2024 to redeem himself. Lift's low Tomatometer and Audience Score indicate that the movie is considered bad by both critics and viewers. Despite Lift's negative reception, Worthington has Horizon: An American Saga to look forward to, which has the potential to give him a positive Rotten Tomatoes score.
Unfortunately, Netflix's Lift, starring Sam Worthington, has performed rather poorly on Rotten Tomatoes. However, the actor shouldn't throw in the towel for 2024 just yet because he has a highly anticipated project premiering in the summer that could redeem the year for the actor. Worthington stars as Huxley in the 2024 comedy thriller film, which revolves around a team of thieves coming together to pull off a seemingly impossible heist — stealing $500 million (in the form of gold) from a locked vault on a plane while...

Remember the Titans is an inspiring Disney sports film based on a true story with some inaccuracies. The T.C. Williams High School football team in real life was dominant, winning games by large margins. The racial tension between the players portrayed in the film was exaggerated, but racism was still prevalent during that time period.

It seems to tickle Graham Yost when people refer to Silo as a sci-fi drama.
Though the Apple series is as high-concept as it gets—the adaptation of Hugh Howey’s novels is about a futuristic community that exists in a massive underground vault with 144 floors — there are no spaceships in Silo. And there are certainly no lasers.
“It’s not science heavy,” says Yost, the clever mind behind FX’s Justified, who created the Rebecca Ferguson starrer for the streamer. “For me, it’s fantasy, it’s whatever. It’s alternate reality, all that stuff. But the key is to make it feel real and lived-in. I mean honestly, if you pick at the science too much, it falls apart.”
Several studios tried to pick apart Howey’s tomes before Silo finally became a small-screen reality. After Howey self-published Wool, the first book in his dystopian series in 2011, 20th Century Fox...

Some movie sequels have divided fans, despite being worthy of better appreciation. Whether because they were overshadowed by the original or simply didn't land on release, they deserve more. Predators, The Wolverine and Halloween Ends are all great examples...
Sometimes, if a movie franchise includes some of the best movies of all time, it's easy to overlook some perfectly decent sequels in the same series that aren't quite as good. That's a shame because it results in some good work from actors and directors getting swept under the carpet and underappreciated. It's happened in pretty much every genre imaginable.
Countless franchises have criminally overlooked follow-ups, from superior horror movie sequels and sci-fi to superhero movies and comedies. It's time to stop only giving time to the best installments in franchises and giving their inferior-but-still-watchable sequels more of a chance. The star-studded cast of Horizon: An American Saga, including Sienna Miller and Sam Worthington, brings immense talent to the movie. Kevin Costner's performance in the Western will be enhanced by acting alongside his award-winning and experienced castmates. The cast's experience in dramatic Westerns ensures that Costner's character will fit seamlessly into the fully-realized Western universe of Horizon: An American Saga.
Oscar-winner Kevin Costner will direct and star in the upcoming two-part western Horizon: An American Saga, but his character is not the most exciting element of the much-anticipated drama. Since the earliest days of cinema, the horror genre has been a beloved source of entertainment, especially sub-genres like slashers. Some of the greatest horror films opt for a condensed timeline, with many taking place across a single day, some almost told in real time. This allows viewers to better identity with the characters in their tense encounters with killers and monsters, almost making it seem real.
Horror movies' use of condensed time as compared with other genres is vital in establishing the intense and urgent tone of their stories. This allows for the fear of the story to grow, and places viewers in a time frame that can feel more surreal and heighten their fear. All horror movies have strength in different pacing, but the tighter the story the scarier it can be for audiences to watch.

Exclusive: A surprise project has emerged to whet the appetites of hungry international buyers at next week’s American Film Market: Kevin Costner’s big-budget Warner Bros Western Horizon: An American Saga.
The two-part project is being sold to international buyers by recently rebooted German-based sales firm K5 International.
Chapters 1 and 2 of Horizon have been set by New Line to open domestically in cinemas on June 28, 2024, and August 16, 2024, respectively. That strong theatrical commitment is something that will appeal to international buyers, and some we’ve spoken with are already enthused about getting a sighter at a big-budget movie from an Oscar winner like Costner, even if prices are inevitably high.
We hear that Costner himself will likely take a view on offers in major territories, which isn’t unusual for an A-list director-producer working on a passion project, especially given that he has reportedly put a chunk of his own money into it.

Despite a subpar financial outcome and mixed reviews upon its initial release, 2002's The Mothman Prophecies has gradually gained a bit of a cult following as a truly chilling supernatural horror film. Claiming to be based on true events that occurred between Nov. 1966 and Dec. 1967 in Point Pleasant, the film also served as a mystery, with the audience pondering if there was really something supernatural going on or if it was a series of local legend stories that took on a life of their own. It's a story that deserves to be expanded on, and it looks like that might be finally happening for fans of the film. Director Mark Pellington, who helmed the first movie, revealed that a sequel could be heading to streaming, so this would be the perfect time to get familiar with The Mothman Prophecies and its legacy.

About halfway through playwright Annie Baker’s self-assured and pitch-perfect directorial debut Janet Planet, 11-year-old Lacy (Zoe Ziegler) rolls over in bed and turns to her mother Janet (Julianne Nicholson) with an innocent prompt. “You know what’s funny?” she asks. “Every moment of my life is hell.” At such a gentle moment, in such a casual way, she delivers a melodramatic gut-punch. You can’t help choking out a laugh.
Throughout this existential comedy, lighthearted coming-of-age drama, and sublime slice of Western Massachusetts life, Lacy has a habit of expressing herself in unintentionally funny, wounding ways to her mother. It’s a characteristic that’s baked into their codependent relationship that Lacy struggles to maintain in the months before she begins sixth grade. An outcast amongst her peers, she tests her mother’s patience and devotion, threatening to kill herself if she doesn’t help her escape summer camp.

Playwright Annie Baker has developed a distinctive style in which silences often speak louder than words, the words themselves mean more than what’s actually said, and routine conversations and events have the power of earth-shattering revelations. It’s an approach to drama that demands us to pay close attention to every line of dialogue and every flicker of emotion on an actor’s face, lest we miss crucial details. In some ways, that’s a deeply cinematic approach to dramaturgy, recalling the economy of Robert Bresson and Harold Pinter’s work, except that Baker’s is far more emotionally immediate.
The plot of Baker’s quiet and often moving feature directorial debut, Janet Planet, details the bond between 11-year-old Lacy (Zoe Ziegler) and her acupuncturist mother, Janet (Julianne Nicholson), in rural Western Massachusetts in the summer of 1991 just before Lacy enters the sixth grade. Kevin Costner has revealed his much-ballyhooed epic western film, Horizon: An American Saga, will be released in two parts next summer. Chapter 1 will arrive in theaters on June 28th, 2024, while Chapter 2 will debut on August 16th, 2024.
Horizon: An American Saga marks a return to the Civil War era of Costner’s Oscar-winning Dances with Wolves. Spanning 15 years, it depicts the settlement of the American West and will center on the settlers and indigenous people that first occupied the land.
“It involves women trying to get by in a world that was impossibly tough,” Costner previously told Variety about the epic. “They were often [dragged] out to these places because that’s where the men wanted to go; women were following their men. They didn’t ask to be in these territories that were unsettled and dangerous, and life wasn’t easy. I’ve chosen to make sure that was really obvious,...

It has been a full 20 years since Oscar-winner Kevin Costner directed a movie but he is finally back for his first turn behind the camera since 2003's "Open Range." Not only that, but Costner decided to go ahead and tackle an ambitious two-part cinematic event that will arrive in theaters next summer in the form of "Horizon: An American Saga." Chapter 1 is due to arrive in June of next year, followed by Chapter 2 in August, making for a pretty interesting experiment on the part of Warner Bros.
Now, we have our first glimpse at the experiment with a brief teaser trailer. For those who have enjoyed Costner's work in recent years on the hit TV series "Yellowstone," this is likely to serve as a treat as he's on horseback in an old-school Western shooting his rifle and rocking one heck of a mustache. This looks like the dad movie event of the decade.

Kevin Costner is coming back to theaters next summer, with double the Western goodness for fans. Warner Bros. revealed on Thursday that “Horizon: An American Saga” will be a two-part western epic, with both installments releasing in theaters next summer. “Horizon: An American Saga Chapter 1” will open on June 28 while “Horizon: An American Saga Chapter 2” will arrive in theaters on Aug. 16.

Kevin Costner is staking his claim.
The Oscar winning filmmaker’s western epic Horizon: An American Saga Chapter 1 and 2 will respectively open in cinemas on June 28, 2024 and Aug. 16, 2024.
The movie is being released by New Line. On June 28, currently there’s Paramount’s Mission: Impossible 8 and Sony’s Horrorscope, while on Aug. 16 next year there’s 20th Century Studios’ Alien reboot.
Horizon returns Costner to the Civil War backdrop he previously visited in his multi-Oscar-winning Dances With Wolves. The pic follows the 15-year span of pre- and post-Civil War expansion and settlement of the American West. Experienced through the eyes of many, the epic journey is fraught with peril and intrigue from the constant onslaught of natural elements, to the interactions with the indigenous peoples who lived on the land, and the determination and at many times ruthlessness of those who sought to settle it.

Kevin Costner’s next western epic is carving out real estate for next summer. The first two installments of the Yellowstone star’s Horizon: An American Saga will bow in June and August next year.
Warner Bros. has dated Horizon: An American Saga Chapter 1 for a June 28, 2024 theatrical release. It will be followed two months later by Horizon: An American Saga Chapter 2 on Aug. 16, 2024. A sequel being released such a short period of time after the first film is rare, but not unheard of. Most recently the horror films X and Pearl were both released in 2022.
According to Costner’s court filings during his recent divorce proceedings, he contributed at least $20 million to the budget of the saga, which is expected to span four films. With the dual strikes, production on the third chapter was put on hold, but the filming for the first two films is complete, with this second wrapping this summer.
