When it comes to writing and directing, Quentin Tarantino is undoubtedly one of the very best in the entertainment business. But that’s not all that the filmmaker is capable of. Outside of films that he has been directly involved with, Tarantino has also appeared in several other projects as a guest star. Take, for example, J.J. Abrams’ spy series Alias where he starred alongside Jennifer Garner.
Quentin Tarantino in Pulp Fiction
Appearing in the 12th and 13th episodes of Alias’ first season, Quentin Tarantino played the role of a former agent of the SD6 agency, McKenas Cole. Seeking revenge in the series, Tarantino’s character gets a face-off with Jennifer Garner’s Sydney Bristow. The duo engaged in a famous fight sequence, which was later hailed by Tarantino as he had the highest praise for Garner.

Oscar Parties Are Full of Phonies (But They’re Getting Kicked Out)
Winning an Academy Award opens a lot of doors, especially at Oscar-night afterparties. One of Hollywood’s sacred red carpet rules is that merely holding an Oscar can be a golden ticket to just about every swell soiree in town. But in recent years, some gate-crashers have been exploiting that loophole by turning up with ersatz trophies or, as happened this year, an actual Oscar that didn’t belong to them. Rambling has learned that one non-invitee who arrived at Vanity Fair’s ultra-exclusive fete hauling a vintage 1986 Oscar quickly found himself kicked to the curb. The person was not the award winner, a rep for the magazine confirms to THR, adding that the trophy was confiscated. “Our head of security is working on tracking down its rightful owner.” It’s unclear how the crasher got his hands on the golden boy,...

Paula Weinstein, the veteran studio executive, two-time Emmy winner and producer on such projects as The Fabulous Baker Boys, The Perfect Storm, Analyze This and Grace and Frankie, died Monday. She was 78.
Weinstein died at her home in New York, her daughter, Hannah Rosenberg, told The Hollywood Reporter. No cause of death was revealed.
“The world is a lesser place without my mother,” Rosenberg said in a statement. “She was a masterful producer and a force of nature for the things she believed in, including the many projects that spanned her illustrious career, the stories she fought to tell and the social justice causes she championed.”
In September, Weinstein exited Tribeca Enterprises, which she joined as executive vp in 2013, to work on political campaigns. She earlier was a vp at Warner Bros., an executive vp at 20th Century Fox and president of United Artists.

Jean-Claude Forest created the heroine Barbarella in the pages of V Magazine back in 1962, and it only took six years for director Roger Vardim (and a small army of screenwriters) to bring the character to the screen in the film Barbarella (watch it Here), where she was played by Jane Fonda. A sequel called Barbarella Goes Down never made it into production, but talks of a Barbarella reboot have been bouncing around for decades, with Rose McGowan, Halle Berry, and Kate Beckinsale being among those who have been considered for the title role. Robert Rodriguez was going to direct the new film at one point, Robert Luketic at another. Neal Purvis and Robert Wade wrote a screenplay, and were later attached to a TV adaptation that had Nicolas Winding Refn at the helm. None of these ever got the greenlight. About a year and a half ago, it was announced...

Before Mary Elizabeth Winstead played the roles of comic book-based Ramona Flowers and John McClane’s daughter, she starred as Lee Montgomery in Quentin Tarantino’s Death Proof. At the time, Winstead was making her mark in the horror slasher genre, even leading the ensemble cast of Final Destination 3. When she got the audition call for Death Proof, Winstead pulled off one little trick to get past the audition stage.
Mary Elizabeth Winstead in 10 Cloverfield Lane
Winstead shared that she wore flip-flops to the audition to tap into the director’s alleged cinematic foot fetish. The Fargo actress managed to impress Tarantino with her take on Lee, rather than use her foot to get cast in the film.

"Star Trek" is notoriously good to its actors. If a hard-working performer gets a small gig in one episode of "Star Trek," it becomes incredibly likely they'll be invited back for another. Armin Shimerman, for instance, played a talking treasure chest and a random Ferengi character on "Star Trek: The Next Generation" years before he was offered the main role of Quark on "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine." Likewise, Tim Russ played a terrorist on the "Next Generation" episode "Starship Mine" before he became Tuvok on "Star Trek: Voyager." There are dozens of other examples. Once you're in the "Star Trek" family, you'll be a part of it for life.

The Barbarella reboot is still in the works, Sydney Sweeney has confirmed.
In 2022, it was announced by Sony Pictures that Madame Web star Sydney Sweeney would be starring in and executive producing a new Barbarella movie. No major updates have since been officially announced, though there have been rumors that Edgar Wright could be directing. In a new interview with Josh Horowitz for the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Sweeney was asked if the Barbarella reboot is still happening, to which she confirmed, "It is." She then shared her love for the original feature film, appreciating how "it's so campy," before going on to explain why she's so eager to take on playing the titular character.

Sylvester Stallone’s 1986 film Cobra became a cult-classic favorite despite its mixed reviews; however, this might be the reason why the iconic action movie never received a sequel.

Action movies need to innovate to remain relevant in a crowded genre, blending horror elements to captivate a wider audience. Cult classic action-horror films like Aliens and Predator have stood the test of time, earning them respect as pivotal parts of film history. Compelling characters, intense fight scenes, and terrifying twists make action-horror movies like 28 Days Later and Dawn of the Dead must-watch films.
Fight scenes, violence, and heroic deeds are all expected in a typical action movie, but some utilize aspects of the horror genre to make the scariest action movies out there. Not strictly horror or action, these films blend genres brilliantly to appeal to a wider range of audiences and push the boundaries of what the typical action movie can be. Although horror isn't for all audiences, these films also tell compelling stories and incorporate strong character development to keep the viewer invested.

The ‘very male-gazed orientation’ of the 1980s version of Red Sonja will be a thing of the past in the remake, says Matilda Lutz.
Fantasy adventure Red Sonja emerged in 1985, three years after 1982’s Conan The Barbarian and around the time of the unexpectedly daft Conan The Destroyer. Red Sonja, directed by Destroyer’s Richard Fleischer, cashed in on that series’ popularity and also featured its star, Arnold Schwarzenegger, alongside 80s icon Brigitte Nielsen who starred as the titular female warrior.

Quentin Tarantino's final film, The Movie Critic, could complete a hidden character trilogy started 17 years ago. One of the most iconic science fiction action franchises is "Predator," which began with the eponymous movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger in 1987. While "Predator" is regarded as an action classic, attempts to follow-up on its success have since had considerably more mixed results. The series has seen a number of sequels, revivals, and crossovers with the "Alien" franchise, with varying levels of critical and commercial reception. However, for every "Predator" movie that has seen the light of day, there are plenty of projects that were canceled or altered significantly.
From failed attempts to bring Schwarzenegger back in the fold to star in additional installments or sequel plans shelved by disappointing box office, there are lots of discarded "Predator" movies. This includes the studio shuffling pitches and filmmakers in their hopes to keep the franchise relevant and recapture the 1987 movie's magic. One thing that this world needs more of is creative partnerships between master storytellers. Without the shared brain power of George Lucas and Steven Spielberg, we wouldn't have Indiana Jones! If Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez didn't unite for Grindhouse, who knows if we could ever see world peace? These unifying projects aren't just exciting for movie buffs. When two artists come together, they bring out the best in each other and merge their individual voices into a unified approach. This can be fun when you have two similar creatives coming together, but it's even more fun when they have disparate styles, particularly if they typically idle in different genres or mediums.

Quentin Tarantino is undoubtedly one of the most influential directors in Hollywood. There is one filmmaker who was influenced and guided by Tarantino and went on to become a prominent name in the horror genre. Eli Roth’s film, Restaurant Dogs, was a clear homage to the Tarantino film Reservoir Dogs. The duo later became good friends and collaborated on several projects over the years.

You can tell it’s spring.
In Vermont, sap flows out of maple trees. But for Hollywood, movies go off like fireworks in the Lone Star State at SXSW.
The third edition of the Austin festival since coming out of the pandemic — and dual strikes — hasn’t lost its shine: When it comes to creating an “it” movie for the spring or summer, SXSW remains a helluva tastemaker event to stoke the 18-34 crowd.
It’s where A Quiet Place triggered its first screams in 2018 before morphing into a $638M franchise (the third film is due this summer), and it’s where Everything Everywhere All at Once in 2022 began its yearlong journey to Oscars 2023, taking home several trophies including Best Picture — a first for any SXSW world premiere.

Quentin Tarantino's upcoming film, The Movie Critic, may not be his last as hinted by his ten-movie rule. A new graphic biography on Tarantino explores his writing talents and potential to continue producing films. The book also proves that a biopic on Tarantino's intriguing life could provide a future project related to him after The Movie Critic.
While Quentin Tarantino’s ten-movie rule suggests that The Movie Critic will be the last film he makes, a new book about the filmmaker’s life makes this less likely to be the case. For several years now, Tarantino has stuck by his decision to retire after directing ten movies, having previously cited his disappointment in how many great directors fail to improve upon or maintain their quality of films after a certain point in time. After Once Upon a Time in Hollywood marked Quentin Tarantino’s ninth movie, his upcoming film...

Josh Brolin is one of the most well-recognized actors in Hollywood at present. Brolin’s career has been through the wringer, but he did not give up, and he is now reaping the rewards for his persistence. His career took a bit of a nosedive, but the one film that helped him get back on track was No Country for Old Men. The film holds a special place in Brolin’s heart, and even the author of the book, Cormac McCarthy, honored him in a special way.
Josh Brolin has starred in some of the biggest film franchises of all time. From playing Thanos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to donning the role of Gurney Halleck in the Dune series, Brolin has found unprecedented success as an actor. And he owes it to the film adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s No Country for Old Men.

The new action film Lights Out has stepped into the ring for viewers to enjoy. Frank Grillo stars as a mysterious wanderer who is haunted by a past of seeing his comrades die in combat and now finds himself thrust into the underground world of mixed-martial arts fighting. Mekhi Phifer also stars as Grillo’s only ally with Durmot Mulroney as a crime boss and Scott Adkins making a special appearance as Grillo’s former brother-in-arms.
The movie also stars Jaime King as Ridgeway, who is a police detective who is seemingly pulling all the strings behind it all, but is there more that she’s hiding? King had starred opposite Johnny Depp in Ted Demme’s film Blow, followed by Michael Bay’s Pearl Harbor starring opposite Ben Affleck. You may recognize her as Goldie in Robert Rodriguez’s Sin City and the sequel, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For.

Some Westerns are objectively not the best movies, but so charming that they become genuinely entertaining watches. For example, Cowboys & Aliens blends science fiction and Western action, but lacks critical acclaim and a sequel. Bad Girls provides a unique perspective with an all-female Western cast, despite predictable plot points.
Although there are plenty of movies in the Western genre that aren't as great as others, they've still gone on to develop a strong following because of how charming and accessible they are to audiences. While some Westerns boast impressive visuals, there are others that are notable for the lackluster performances of their cast, weak direction, and writing that relies far too heavily on tired Western tropes. Nevertheless, some Westerns have developed a respectable reputation among audiences precisely for their negative traits.

A long-developing comic book series starring Diego Boneta has found a home at Amazon’s Prime Video.
The tech giant’s streaming service has ordered El Gato, based on the comic El Gato Negro by Richard Dominguez. Boneta (Luis Miguel: The Series, the 2022 Father of the Bride) will play the title character in the thriller, a man who finds himself at the center of a vast conspiracy when he discovers his father was a 1970s vigilante, “El Gato.”
The project was initially set up at Apple TV+ more than four years ago, with Boneta attached. At the time, Robert Rodriguez was in line to direct and executive produce, but he’s no longer involved. El Gato Negro comes from Amazon MGM Studios — MGM was behind the show before Amazon acquired it — and creator Eric Carrasco (Foundation, Supergirl, Netflix’s upcoming Twilight of the Gods), who will executive produce and...

Thanksgiving was a surprise hit in 2023, but Eli Roth's next film, Borderlands, is a massive departure in tone and scale. 2.Borderlands is an adaptation of the video game franchise with a bigger budget and cast than Thanksgiving, attracting a wider audience. Roth passed off some directing duties on Borderlands to focus on Thanksgiving, showing his true passion for the horror genre.
Thanksgiving was director Eli Roth's horror hit of 2023, but the director's big 2024 movie couldn't be more different. Thanksgiving was a surprising success upon its release in late 2023, with the dark comedy slasher film finding a weird connection with fans of the genre. However, Eli Roth will be making a massive leap in an entirely different direction in 2024, as the director's next film is nothing like Thanksgiving.
2023's Thanksgiving follows an axe-wielding masked maniac who wears a Pilgrim costume and slaughters the residents of Plymouth, Massachusetts in over-the-top ways.

Thanksgiving ends with a twist revealing Sheriff Newlon as the killer and burning him alive, paralleling Halloween II's mistake. Thanksgiving 2 could work without Newlon by introducing new suspects and connecting to past events. Despite confirming a sequel, Thanksgiving risks mirroring the Michael Myers storyline that almost destroyed Halloween franchise.
Thanksgiving takes inspiration from various horror classics, but in the process, it also repeated a decades-long mistake that almost killed one of horror’s biggest franchises. Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez’s Grindhouse project saw a couple of fake trailers with promising concepts, among them one by Eli Roth titled Thanksgiving. Over a decade after its release, Thanksgiving became a full-feature film, with Roth back as director and co-writer with Jeff Rendell. Thanksgiving takes viewers to Plymouth, Massachusetts, where the title celebration took a sinister turn.

Thanksgiving slashes into Netflix's US Top 10, cementing its horror legacy among viewers with a bloody twist on a traditional holiday. Eli Roth's Thanksgiving, inspired by Grindhouse, was a critical and financial success, leading to the greenlight of a sequel in 2023. Thanksgiving 2 is expected to come out in 2025, as the fiery final act of the original left John Carver's killer's fate in question.
Eli Roth's seasonal slasher Thanksgiving has made a bloody splash on Netflix's viewership charts, entering the US top 10 upon being added. Inspired by the director's contribution to Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez's 2007 movie Grindhouse, the horror movie focuses on a sleepy Massachusetts town that is plagued by a masked pilgrim-costumed killer during the titular holiday. Roth's holiday feature was a critical and financial success upon its release, earning praise in reviews and grossing $46.5 million from a $15 million budget, with Thanksgiving 2 being greenlit in November 2023.

Pop, pop, Bang. Watch out for gritty fistfights aplenty in director Christian Sesma's new feature. Frank Grillo stars in Lights Out as a down-and-out war veteran who teams up with an ex-con, played by Mekhi Phifer, to take on the underground street fighting world in modern-day Los Angeles.
It's pretty straightforward stuff, though the overall vibe is heightened by a bumping soundtrack and other household names that we've seen in other Sesma projects. We recently caught up with the SoCal-based filmmaker to learn more about the real-life inspiration behind Lights Out, which past classics fueled his vision for this latest feature of his, and why The Iron Claw should have gotten Oscar love.

Thanksgiving pays off a 23-year-old horror tease from Scream 3. Patrick Dempsey, who played a red herring in Scream 3, stars as a sheriff/murderer in Thanksgiving. Sheriff Newlon in Thanksgiving kills out of revenge for a lost lover from a previous Black Friday massacre.
Thanksgiving tells an original story, but it paid off a tease from another horror movie released 23 years before Thanksgiving’s release. Based on the fake trailer of the same name that Eli Roth made for Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez’s Grindhouse project, Thanksgiving is a slasher movie that evokes some of the most notable titles from the slasher genre. The release of "Drive-Away Dolls" has been marked by most of the trades as the first solo directorial feature of Ethan Coen, following his brother Joel's 2021 outing with "The Tragedy of Macbeth." And sure, it's a catchy headline to acknowledge that one-half of one of cinema's greatest directorial partnerships is stepping out on his own, but that doesn't tell the full story. For one thing, Ethan Coen already made his solo directorial debut with the documentary "Jerry Lee Lewis: Trouble in Mind." More importantly, "Drive-Away Dolls" may have Coen listed as the solo director, but if you ask him, this was yet another co-directed project, but this time with his wife and longtime Coen Bros. editor, Tricia Cooke.
Cooke first worked with the Coens as an editor on "Miller's Crossing" fresh out of film school, seeking out the job not because they were the esteemed directors of "Blood Simple" and Raising Arizona" fame,...

Filming wrapped on director Eli Roth‘s adaptation of the Borderlands video game series from Gearbox and 2K way back in June of 2021. A year and a half later, Deadpool director Tim Miller had to step in to handle the project’s two weeks of reshoots because Roth had the chance to finally – after sixteen years – make a feature based on the Thanksgiving faux trailer he put together for the Quentin Tarantino / Robert Rodriguez collaboration Grindhouse. The Borderlands reshoots have been completed, Thanksgiving has come and gone, and Lionsgate is now gearing up to finally release Borderlands into the world on August 9th. With just over five months to go until that date arrives, Lionsgate has unveiled a trailer for the film, and you can check that out in the embed above.

Last year, horror director extraordinaire Eli Roth debuted his modern remake of a lost horror film that never existed. Back in 2007, Roth contributed a trailer for a fake film named "Thanksgiving" to Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez's "Grindhouse" project. The trailer showcased an array of twisted kills, one particularly notorious example of which involved a cheerleader on a trampoline...
Then, in 2023, "Thanksgiving" was finally made into an actual feature, although this modern version eschewed the low-budget slasher/exploitation style that characterized the trailer from "Grindhouse." Instead, Roth attempted to evolve beyond the edgelord horror with which he made his name in the early aughts and produced a modern version of "Thanksgiving" loosely based on his "Grindhouse" contribution.

Thanksgiving taps into dark holiday themes and embodies New England's singular feel. The splatter-horror film wasn't shot solely in Plymouth, Massachusetts. By and large, Thanksgiving was shot on location in Ontario, Canada.
Directed by Eli Roth, 2023's Thanksgiving taps into the dark undercurrent of the titular holiday. In doing so, Roth creates a New England-based slasher film that feels true to its subject — even if Thanksgiving wasn't exclusively filmed in locations like Plymouth, Massachusetts. The idea for the splatter-horror hit stemmed from Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino's 2007 film Grindhouse, which features several fictitious movie trailers. Given Roth's horror expertise, he was tapped to create one of the in-film trailers. Afterward, the Hostel director couldn't shake the idea of turning Thanksgiving into a feature film all its own.
Appropriately set in Plymouth, Massachusetts — the very place the Mayflower pilgrims docked in 1620 — Thanksgiving initially chronicles a Black Friday sale gone terribly wrong.

Ever since the concept was first teased as a fake trailer in Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s Grindhouse, fans of Eli Roth were looking forward to 2023's holiday-centric slasher film Thanksgiving. While there are more than a few horror films set during Halloween and Christmas, America’s National Turkey Day hasn't been as rife for a scary movie companion. Based on the glowing response from critics and impressive box-office haul, it appears that Roth may have created a new Thanksgiving classic to watch alongside A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving and Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. Gory, goofy, and uncompromisingly nasty, Thanksgiving is as twisted as Roth’s fans have come to expect from him. Thanksgiving manages to keep topping itself with its graphic death sequences, but its surprise twist ending may inspire some fans to rewatch the film from a different perspective. Now that the film is available to stream on Netflix,...

John Carver is coming home for leftovers a tad bit sooner than expected. Eli Roth’s holiday-themed slasher Thanksgiving will carve itself a spot on Netflix's streaming catalog starting tomorrow, February 17, about a month sooner than expected. Considering the film's origins, it's a very fitting release date too. Roth originated Thanksgiving as a fake exploitation trailer featured in the Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez double feature Grindhouse alongside other eventual real films Hobo With a Shotgun and Machete. The faux teaser promised a release date in February, which can now, finally, be honored nearly 17 years later.

Zombies often take the horror-comedy to a new level. In their shambling quest to mine humor from the most horrific circumstances, zombie comedies invert the apocalyptic nihilism that an outbreak of the undead tends to elicit. They also subvert the expectations of zombie horror, frequently going meta to poke fun at some of the most time honored tropes.

Scream is often hailed as the pinnacle of Y2K meta-horror, leaving contenders like Robert Rodriguez's excellent yet junky teen sci-fi B-movie The Faculty out of the running. In actuality, while not as good or influential as Scream, The Faculty makes for the perfect second film in a double feature accompanying the Wes Craven classic. The movie even shares a screenwriter in Kevin Williamson, whose career essentially defined the face of teen horror in the mid-late '90s. With additional credits like I Know What You Did Last Summer and Dawson's Creek, Williamson was an undeniable behind-the-scenes force to be reckoned with when it came to influencing the youth culture of the late '90s and early '00s.
