Joshua Logan’s Paint Your Wagon can be viewed as one of the last gasps of a dwindling Hollywood studio system, as well as a precursor to the New Hollywood. The film, with its expansive anamorphic vistas of the American Northwest, bears some superficial similarities to Michael Cimino’s Heaven’s Gate, which is often historicized as the end of the New Hollywood, given how it bankrupted United Artists. But in contrast to the profound sadness with which Cimino regards America’s history of violence, Logan’s musical romp takes a lighthearted approach to the process of resettlement, and it’s propelled by the contrasting personalities of Lee Marvin and Clint Eastwood as bickering and tussling gold prospectors.
Paint Your Wagon straddles multiple genres at once, suggesting something like a western-inflected musical riff on Ernst Lubitsch’s Design for Living. The crux of the story concerns Ben Rumson (Marvin), a ne...

According to reports, Chernin Entertainment and King Features are developing a new ‘patriotic’, live-action “Popeye the Sailor” feature, to be scripted by Michael Caleo (“The Sopranos”):
"...created by cartoonist Elzie Crisler Segar, ‘Popeye’ debuted in the 1929 comic strip “Thimble Theater”.
“The comic was then turned into a series of theatrical cartoon shorts by Fleischer Studios for Paramount Pictures…
“…and featured in comic books, video games, advertisements and a whole lot more.
“Robert Altman directed a live-action ‘Popeye’ movie in 1980. Produced by Robert Evans for Paramount Pictures and Walt Disney Productions, it starred Robin Willams as Popeye, Shelley Duvall as ‘Olive Oyl’, Paul L. Smith as ‘Bluto’, Paul Dooley as ‘J. Wellington Wimpy’, Richard Libertini as ‘George W. Geezil’ and Ray Walston as ‘Poopfeck Pappy’…”

During the 2022 Creative Arts and Primetime Emmys ceremonies, two vastly different age records were broken as the acting victors accepted their prizes. First, 28-year-old Lee Yoo-mi (“Squid Game”) supplanted Samira Wiley as the youngest recipient of either drama guest award, and then Jean Smart (70) improved upon her own oldest comedy actress winner record by clinching a second consecutive trophy for “Hacks.” With one age record having already been smashed at last weekend’s Creative Arts Awards, five more are up for grabs heading into the big primetime show.
Firstly, congratulations are in order for newly crowned Best Drama Guest Actress champ Storm Reid (“The Last of Us”), who, at 20, went from being her category’s third youngest nominee to its youngest winner. In fact, she is the all-time youngest recipient of any guest acting Emmy, also taking that distinction from Lee, who in turn usurped Justin Timberlake. Two more “The Last of Us...

Matthew Macfadyen is Gold Derby’s odds-on favorite to win his second consecutive Best Drama Supporting Actor Emmy this year for playing the very tired Tom Wambsgans on HBO’s “Succession.” Fun fact: if he were to prevail against co-nominees Alexander Skarsgard, Alan Ruck and Nicholas Braun from “Succession” and F. Murray Abraham, Will Sharpe, Michael Imperioli and Theo James from “The White Lotus,” that would tie him with four other dramatic supporting actors on Emmy’s all-time list.
Stuart Margolin (“The Rockford Files” in 1979-80), Michael Conrad (“Hill Street Blues” in 1981-82), Larry Drake (“L.A. Law” in 1988-89) and Ray Walston (“Picket Fences” in 1995-96) all took home back-to-back Emmy Awards in the Best Drama Supporting Actor category during their shows’ tenures.

For months fans have speculated who would succeed the late Logan Roy (Brian Cox) as the head of Waystar Royco on HBO’s critically acclaimed drama “Succession.” In the end, after the GoJo deal was approved by the board — and with Shiv (Sarah Snook) acting as the deciding vote — the servile Tom Wambsgans came out on top. And now it seems like his portrayer, Matthew Macfadyen, might as well.

Amy Heckerling's 1982 film "Fast Times at Ridgemont High," written by Cameron Crowe, is a coming-of-age film that contains far more embarrassment and ambivalence about the teen experience than any expected notes of wistful nostalgia. The Ridgemont High students don't always make good decisions and find themselves stumbling toward sexual liberation and an adult sense of agency. They are trying to achieve some sense of dignity, which is difficult when your sexual encounters are mortifying and you have to wear stupid costumes to your minimum-wage job. They're not good kids or bad kids. They're complete people. It's the film's sense of emotional honesty that likely has it firmly ensconced in the pop consciousness. Its comedic moments are but icing on the cake.
"Fast Times" is set in California's San Fernando Valley, and the character played by Sean Penn, Jeff Spicoli, is a somewhat spaced-out, stoned surfer dude who has massive...

The first season of “Severance,” which originally streamed from February to April on Apple TV+, proved quite popular with Emmy voters this year. The show reaped 14 nominations in the primetime drama categories and blazed a trail as the first Apple program to compete for the top honor of Best Drama Series. Of the three male actors recognized for their work on “Severance,” only former Best Comedy Guest Actor champ John Turturro has won an Emmy before. Four decades into his career, he now holds the distinction of having earned TV academy notices for guest, lead, and supporting performances.
Turturro has submitted the seventh episode of “Severance,” entitled “Defiant Jazz,” for Best Drama Supporting Actor consideration. In the installment, his character, Irving Bailiff, and his Lumon Industries coworkers are met with stricter security measures after they begin learning too many of the nondescript company’s dark secrets. Writer-director Billy Wilder’s favorite and perhaps best movie takes the leap to 4K, revealing even more beauty in the images of Joseph Lashelle and the designs of Alexandre Trauner . . . we all feel like we’ve lived in C.C. Baxter’s New York flat. Wilder and I.A.L. Diamond’s ‘dirty fairy tale’ best expresses the difficulty of keeping both a job and one’s self-respect — fitting in a love life seems altogether too much to ask. It all comes down to Shirley MacLaine’s sweet smile and Jack Lemmon’s eagerness to be a ‘mensch’ — when he’s discovering that a moral compromise is like selling one’s soul.

Casting director and producer Don Phillips, who helped launch the careers of such actors as Sean Penn, Matthew McConaughey and Mary Steenburgen, passed away on Thanksgiving Day from natural causes. He would have turned 81 on Dec. 21.
Phillips received his first break when he landed an entry-level job in the casting department of filmmaker Otto Preminger’s 1971 movie Such Good Friends. Impressed by Phillips, Preminger took an ad in Variety and Backstage to praise the novice’s work on the film.
The acknowledgement led to Phillips getting hired to do extras casting on Sidney Lumet’s Serpico starring Al Pacino with his job subsequently expanding to casting the entire film. Lumet then tapped him as casting director on his next film, Dog Day Afternoon, also starring Pacino. Phillips is credited with holding out for actor John Cazale to be cast opposite Pacino as Sal.

Last Year’s Winner: Billy Crudup, “The Morning Show”
Still Eligible: No.
Hot Streak: Peter Dinklage was the last actor to earn back-to-back wins in the Best Supporting Actor, Drama category, and that was just a few years ago: 2018-2019. Before that, you have to go back to 1995-1996 to find a repeat winner, when Ray Walston took home two Emmys for “Picket Fences.” Billy Crudup will have a chance to defend his title when “The Morning Show” returns, but he won’t repeat this year, since Season 2 will not be released in time.
Fun Fact: Though it’s rare for the same actor to win in consecutive years, programs fare slightly better and repeat winners still surface regularly. Joe Pantoliano and Michael Imperioli won the Supporting category for “The Sopranos” in 2003 and 2004, while Richard Schiff, Bradley Whitford, and John Spencer won for “The West Wing” between 2000 – 2002.

Bradley Whitford and John Lithgow have nine Emmys between them, including one each in Best Drama Supporting Actor. They’re in the running in the category this year for “The Handmaid’s Tale” and “Perry Mason,” respectively, each with a chance to become the first person to win the award for two different shows.
Whitford took home his first Emmy in drama supporting actor for “The West Wing” in 2001 on his first of three straight bids. His other wins were for his guest roles on “Transparent” in 2015 and “The Handmaid’s Tale” in 2019, making him the first person to win the comedy and drama guest actor categories. “Learn it. Know it. Live it!” The best-remembered teen comedy of the ’80s is also an insightful and unabashed look at real attitudes, behaviors and motivations of young people learning to deal with adult issues. Beyond the hilarious Sean Penn and the luscious Phoebe Cates lies a talent squad of notables and stars-to-be like Jennifer Jason Leigh, Judge Reinhold and Robert Romanus, with appearances by Amanda Wyss, Forest Whitaker, Eric Stoltz, Nicolas Coppola and Anthony Edwards. The stunning feature directing debut of Amy Heckerling, from Cameron Crowe’s undercover high school exposé, should be acknowledged as a modern classic.

A musical that charms even audiences that don’t like musicals, this adaptation of a big 1955 Broadway hit is noted for capturing much of the original’s power and brilliance — more legendary stage performances should be filmed like this, immortalizing theater history that otherwise disappears into the ether. Gwen Verdon, Ray Walston, Russ Brown and star replacement Tab Hunter shine, yet ‘unknown’ Broadway talent Shannon Bolin and Robert Shafer earn just as much applause. The Verdon-Bob Fosse creative hookup is at its strongest here, complete with a show-stopper of a dance duo. Come to think of it, almost every song in this thing stops the show, like one of Joe Hardy’s home runs: Wow!

“A Mixed Can Of Spinach”
By Raymond Benson
When I first saw Popeye on the big screen on its initial release in December of 1980, I was disappointed and a little appalled. I was (and still am) a huge Robert Altman fan, and I had been expecting great things. The film touted the first motion picture appearance by Robin Williams as well (although he’d had in a small role in a 1977 picture). Anticipation was high.
Popeye received very mixed reviews, but it made a decent amount of money at the box office, and became an object of derision in Hollywood for years. Altman was unable to get big studio backing for over a decade, so he moved to Europe and made small pictures there.
Then—home video turned the movie around. Popeye became a best-selling VHS tape for children, and its reputation improved.

This article contains spoilers for the 1994 miniseries The Stand and likely the 2020 series by extension.
The Stand is considered by many, to this day, to be one of Stephen King’s three or four finest novels. It is certainly among his most beloved by longtime readers, because of its sheer size and the scope and breadth of its storytelling. A hybrid of horror, apocalyptic sci-fi and epic fantasy (King has said he explicitly wanted to create a sort of modern day The Lord of the Rings), it’s an eerie, surreal tale of the fall of civilization and the battle for the souls of those left alive in the aftermath.
A motion picture adaptation was first announced on the back cover of the paperback version of the book (with George A. Romero directing), but to many, a miniseries seemed like the only way to adapt The Stand due to its sheer size.

“Frasier.” “Friends.” “ER.” “The X-Files.” It’s amazing how just the mention of a TV show can take you back in time, and with this list it’s no surprise that we’re offering our flashback 25 years to 1995, remembering the 47th Emmy Awards. It was a night with no one big winner among several now-classic series, a new Egot recipient, some sentimental moments and a memorable homage to TV theme songs. Jason Alexander of “Seinfeld” and Cybill Shepherd of “Cybill” led the festivities on September 10.
Perennial favorite “Frasier” held on to its title of Best Comedy Series for the second year, a streak it would continue until 1999, winning for each of its first five seasons. It beat out popular sitcoms “The Larry Sanders Show,” “Mad About You,” “Seinfeld” and newcomer “Friends.” Kelsey Grammer won his second of four Best Comedy Actor Emmys for playing the title character, while his onscreen brother,...

HBO Max has given a script-to-series order to an adaptation of the classic children’s novel “The Westing Game,” the streamer announced Wednesday.
No writer or director is attached to the project, but HBO Max, along with producers MGM Television and Julie Corman, is “currently interviewing” candidates.
First published in 1978, Ellen Raskin’s “The Westing Game” is described as an “ensemble mystery-comedy” surrounding the death of millionaire Samuel Westing. The reading of Westing’s will sets in motion a game for his sixteen heirs unlike any other, the winners of which will walk away with his $200 million fortune.
The novel won the John Newbury Award for children’s literature in 1979 and was ranked number one on the list of the top 100 children’s novels of all time by School Library Journal in 2012.
“The Westing Game” previously received the screen-adaptation treatment with a 1997 made-for-tv movie starring Ashley Peldon, Diane Ladd, Sally Kirkland...

The Westing Game is getting a small screen adaptation after HBO Max handed MGM and UA Television a script to series order.
The classic novel, which was written by Ellen Raskin and first published in 1978, follows the bizarre chain of events that begins when 16 people gather for the reading of a millionaire.
No one knows why eccentric, game-loving millionaire Samuel W. Westing has chosen a virtual stranger, and a possible murderer, to inherit his vast fortune by playing one last game.
It’s described as a Knives Out-meets-Agatha Christie ensemble mystery-comedy. The book won the Newbery Medal and was number one among all-time children’s novels by School Library Journal in 2012.

As someone who has been a huge fan of Talia Shire’s work for decades now, this writer was absolutely thrilled to have the opportunity to speak with her recently in support of the recent restoration of Hal Needham’s Rad, which celebrated the BMX Bike craze that was all the rage during the 1980s.
For Shire, the project has always been a family affair; her late husband Jack Schwartzman produced Rad, and her son Robert has been the driving force behind the film finding a new life after nearly 35 years now. Rad was recently released by Vinegar Syndrome in 4K Ultra HD and on Blu-ray, and it’s also headed to AltaVOD on Friday, July 10th, with a subsequent On Demand Release on July 24th.

Rad (1986) is available on Altavod and VOD this July and it is now available on Blu-Ray through Vinegar Syndrome. Check out this new trailer:
Originally released in 1986 during the rise of the BMX bike craze, this powerful piece of pop cultural nostalgia is finally coming to disc, newly restored in 4K from its original negative by Fotokem. The film follows Cru Jones (Bill Allen), a small town kid determined to win an infamous BMX race set on a nearly impossible course known as Helltrack. A sleeper hit upon its initial release, Rad has become one of the iconic cult films of the 1980s and amongst BMX professionals, spawning fan clubs and repertory film screenings for decades.
“This is a very personal project for me. My Father produced the film, my brother John filmed the opening and closing credits, my Mother plays Cru’s Mom; my family grew up in and...

Last year, Bradley Whitford became the first man to win both drama guest and comedy guest actor categories following his victory for “The Handmaid’s Tale,” which came four years after his win in the latter for “Transparent.” He can carve out some more Emmy history this year with “Handmaid’s”: Competing in Best Drama Supporting Actor now, Whitford has a chance to be the first multiple winner for two shows in the category.
The actor already has a supporting statuette for “The West Wing” from 2001, prevailing on the first of three consecutive bids for the seminal drama. He hasn’t been nominated there since 2003, and the category itself is not as friendly to repeat winners as some other ones at the Emmys. Six people have won drama supporting actor more than once — but all for one show:
1. Stuart Margolin, “The Rockford Files” (1979-80)
2. Michael Conrad, “Hill Street Blues” (1981-82)

Well people we are kicking off the Appreciation of our Lord and Saviour Nicolas Cage proper with his first official big screen debut in this Amy Heckerling directed, Cameron Crowe biographical tale Fast Times at Ridgemont High. A movie that admittedly I have never actually seen but heard many a great thing about this 80s coming of age comedy that launched many a career including the figurehead of our Appreciaton Society.

While it may not be a Friday, Tuesday the 13th does have a bit of a nice ring to it, too, which makes it a perfect day to add some great genre Blu-rays and DVDs to your home entertainment collections. Scream Factory is doing the (dark) lord’s work yet again this week with their Collector’s Edition of Vice Squad (which I cannot wait to check out) as well as their stunning Steelbooks for both Galaxy of Terror and Forbidden World.
For those of you who enjoy “talkies” (a phrase we coined in our house for our favorite dialogue-heavy films), Radioland Murders arrives on Blu for the first time ever this week, and the third season of Riverdale hits both formats on Tuesday as well.
Other notable releases for August 13th include Avengers: Endgame, The Velocipastor (ahead of its Blu-ray release on September 17th), A Dark Place, Devil Music,...

Peter Dinklage feels like a mortal lock to take home his record-breaking fourth Best Drama Supporting Actor Emmy for “Game of Thrones,” but his victory may not be as assured if you go by recent Emmy history. If he does prevail again this year, it’d be his second straight win, but no one has been able to defend their crown in this category in 23 years.
The last person to win two drama supporting actor Emmys in a row was Ray Walston (“Picket Fences”), who triumphed in 1995 and ’96. Since then, the only people to earn multiple Emmys in this category have been Dinklage and Aaron Paul (“Breaking Bad”). Paul accomplished it first, winning his second trophy in 2012 to go with his 2010 one; he nabbed a third in 2014, becoming the most awarded person in this category. Dinklage tied him at three wins last year, but his were all non-consecutive as well,...

Last Year’s Winner: Peter Dinklage, “Game of Thrones”
Still Eligible: Yes.
Hot Streak: In bad news for Peter Dinklage, the TV Academy really doesn’t like to hand out back-to-back honors for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series — not that Dinklage hasn’t already noticed. His three wins have come in 2011, 2015, and 2018, breaking up the only other repeat winner of the decade’s would-be hot streaks; Aaron Paul, who won for “Breaking Bad” in 2010, 2012, and 2014. Oddly enough, they’re two of just four supporting actors to win three trophies, and the other two — Art Carney (“The Jackie Gleason Show”) and Don Knotts (“The Andy Griffith Show”) — racked up all their wins in three consecutive years. Still, the last actor to win back-to-back in this category was Ray Walston for “Picket Fences” in 1995 and 1996.

He was 86.
Hunter came out as gay with his 2005 autobiography Tab Hunter Confidential: The Making of a Movie Star – later the basis for Jeffrey Schwarz’ 2015 Netflix documentary Tab Hunter Confidential – clearing up longstanding Hollywood rumors that. Since his ’80s resurgence in the John Waters and Paul Bartel films costarring Divine, Hunter had relaxed into a more self-amused, even self-deprecating attitude about the vast chasm between the man born Arthur Gelien in 1931 and the teen idol manufactured and rechristened Tab Hunter by Henry Willson, the agent behind such creatively named Hollywood hunks as Rock Hudson,...

When it comes to the pantheon of great Wtf horror movies of the 1980s, Howard R. Cohen’s Saturday the 14th Strikes Back ranks right up with classic gems like Troll 2, Blood Diner or Spookies, and is probably a film that most genre fans haven’t heard about, let alone have watched either. And yeah, I’m not going to try and sell you on ST14SB as this grand masterpiece – it isn’t – but it is definitely something I would say fans of oddball cinema should experience at least once in their lifetime. It may have more than a few rough edges, but there’s so much genre love coursing through Saturday the 14th Strikes Back’s schlocky veins, that I can’t help but admire its total disregard for cinematic rules, and just delivering up a full-blown monster mash that is a ridiculous amount of nonsensical fun.

Call him strange, but CineSavant is fascinated by ‘women’s films’ that advance a consensus role template for American women. Then they ask questions like, “Is Hilda Crane a . . . Tramp?” Ladies attending these films may have sought to stir up fantasies with a racy romantic adventure — but not too racy. What a tough nut to crack within the Production Code: ace screenwriter Philip Dunne chose this as his third writing-directing assignment. Jean Simmons gives it her best shot, but the screen is stolen by everybody’s favorite harpy, Evelyn Varden.

When Kristin Chenoweth won an Emmy in 2009 for the cancelled ABC comedy “Pushing Daisies,” she joked, “I’m unemployed now, so I’d like to be on ‘Mad Men'” (watch below). Chenoweth’s triumph was hardly the first time someone prevailed at the Emmys for a cancelled TV show, and that’s the one potential bright spot for “Roseanne” scene-stealers John Goodman and Laurie Metcalf following the show’s shocking cancellation. However, while Goodman and Metcalf are still in the running for Emmys, might the icky demise of “Roseanne” thanks to Roseanne Barr‘s racist tweets make the entire program toxic to voters?
Seeabc cancels ‘Roseanne’ following Roseanne Barr’s ‘repugnant’ tweet
Goodman is no stranger to prevailing at the Emmys for cancelled shows, doing just that for “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip” a decade ago. He won Best Drama Guest Actor at the 2007 ceremony after NBC turned...

In this edition of Canon Of Film, we take a look back at Amy Heckerling‘s high school coming-of-age-classic, Fast Times at Ridgemont High. For the story behind the genesis of the Canon, you can click here.
Fast Times At Ridgemont High (1982)
Director: Amy Heckerling
Screenplay: Cameron Crowe based on his book
I think the best high school movies are not the ones that show the over-the-top journeys of a few drunk, stoned, and/or sex-crazed low-life students going to have the defining life-changing moments with their best friend’s slutty mom or whatever, insignifcant pitiful high school goal they aim for.… but instead the better films are the ones that are more slice of life films, the ones that show just how nieve and stupid we were when we younger and how that influenced but didn’t necessarily defined our life. If you ask Freud, we have already had...

Savant’s vote for the best romantic comedy ever goes to a sordid fable about problems in the big city Rat Race: keeping both a job and one’s self-respect. Picking up where 1930s pre-Code movies left off, Billy Wilder and I.A.L. Diamond’s ‘how to succeed’ thesis divides people into two groups, Takers and those that Get Took. And yet the message it delivers is life & love- affirming.

Part of the Jerry Lewis tribute A Mubi Jerrython. Over the course of my forty years as the Los Angeles correspondent for Cahiers du cinema, I wrote about what was happening in American cinema, inventing a way of doing so inspired by Joan Didion’s essay “Having Fun,” which first appeared in The New Yorker. Ironically, Didion’s essay was a blast at the seriousness of people writing about film from outside the business who didn’t understand the inner workings of the studio system. When I met Serge Daney, the editor-in-chief of the Cahiers, at the New York apartment of Jackie Raynal and Sid Geffen on the occasion of the first Semaine des Cahiers in New York in 1977, which I had helped organize, we hit it off immediately. But he was understandably reluctant to entrust to someone who appeared to have been living in a subway the job I...
