With 25 years under its belt, Law & Order: Svu has gone through countless changes in its run, most notably in its lineup of main characters. We’ve come to love so many of the show’s characters, and have also had to say goodbye to some as they moved on to other ventures within the show or real life. But through it all fans have remained loyal to the show and its characters. It’s no secret that fans love Elliot Stabler (Christopher Meloni) and Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) as partners. Nor is it a secret that we all yearn for them to finally bite the bullet and date already! They’re a dynamic duo, a tour de force, there’s no denying that. But there is one partnership that may just edge them out, and that’s Fin Tutuola (Ice-t) and John Munch (Richard Belzer). While no one...

Law & Order is one of the longest and most beloved media franchises on TV. The franchise started with Law & Order, which premiered in 1990. And since then, the Law & Order family grew with shows like Special Victims Unit, Criminal Intent, Trial by Jury, Law & Order LA, True Crime, and Organized Crime. With an always-expanding franchise, the Law & Order cast earned their place as TV legends, from iconic Law & Order actors like Sam Waterson to Mariska Hargitay.
Some of the characters within the Law & Order universe have been part of fans' lives for over two decades. These popular procedurals focus on different parts of the criminal and justice system, and made the Law & Order cast international stars. And while a few actors only lasted a couple of seasons, others became fan favorites and have appeared in hundreds of episodes across different shows within the Law & Order franchise.

Law & Order: Svu episodes are often based on true stories, making them some of the most chilling in the franchise. The show's staying power is due to its cast, including long-time members Mariska Hargitay and Ice-t, and the real-life cases that shock and resonate with audiences. Many of the Svu episodes based on true stories involve rich, powerful, and famous sexual abusers, adding to the chilling nature of the cases.
The entire Law & Order franchise is full of cases that feel pulled from real life, and the Law & Order: Svu episodes based on real-life crimes carry more of an impact on audiences. After 25 seasons, Season 7, Episode 3, "911" remains an iconic episode - and a fan favorite. Olivia Benson's connection with children stems from her desire to be the person she needed as a child. Bringing Maria Recinos back - and having her become a cop - both honors what Olivia has done with her career and will help her work through issues she has tabled for years.
Since 1999, Law & Order: Svu has consistently produced episodes in which viewers emotionally connect with both the victims and the police officers working in the Special Victims Unit. Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay), in particular, pulls at viewers' heartstrings as she connects with victims, especially children. Benson's ability to connect with victims is central to the show, whether audiences are in Season 1 or Season 25, and is part of what makes Svu so special.

Since Van Damme and Seagal hit big in the late 80s and early 90s, martial artists started to come out of the woodwork with their own unique brand. As we’ve covered recently on Reel Action, Van Damme collaborator Sheldon Lettich attempted to introduce audiences to both the style of Capoeira and the star power of Mark Dacascos in Only the Strong. Another martial artist that tried his hand at the action title and came away with a cult following was Jeff Speakman as he demonstrated his Kenpo skills in the 1991 film The Perfect Weapon.

It’s a good day for fans of Law & Order and Law & Order: Svu, as NBC has officially picked up both legal dramas for the 2024-25 season.
This exciting news means that Law & Order will continue for Season 24, and Law & Order: Svu will continue for Season 26.
The renewals were announced alongside the pickups of Chicago Fire, Chicago Med, and Chicago P.D.
Ominously missing from the renewals was the Christopher Meloni-led Law & Order: Organized Crime, currently in its fourth season, but the network is saying that the show’s future is “in discussion.”
The youngest entry in the sprawling Law & Order universe has been saddled with behind-the-scenes issues since its inception and has gone through countless showrunners.
The series typically takes on more serialized storylines as opposed to the procedural nature of the other two Thursday night dramas.

Dick Wolf shows are coming back to NBC in the 2024-2025 season, but there is somewhat of a surprise with the news: One hasn’t been renewed yet. The network has renewed all three One Chicago shows and two Law & Orders. Chicago Fire will be returning for its 13th season, P.D. is coming back for its 12th, and Med is reaching its 10th. Meanwhile, Law & Order will be back for its 24th season, while Svu will be entering its 26th(!). But what about Law & Order: Organized Crime? Its status “is still in discussion,” according to NBC. The Christopher Meloni-led spinoff is currently in its fourth season. It premiered in 2021, as part of a two-part crossover with Svu, which reunited Meloni and Mariska Hargitay (Captain Olivia Benson). Dick Wolf is in for another busy season at NBC. No surprise here, the Peacock network has renewed “Chicago Med,” “Chicago Fire,” “Chicago P.D.,” “Law & Order” and “Law & Order: Svu” for the 2024-25 broadcast TV season. Among Dick Wolf scripted series, that leaves just “Law & Order: Organized Crime” on the bubble; a renewal for that show, which has experienced multiple showrunner changes in its short life, is still in discussion.

Law & Order and Law & Order: Svu will be back for the 2024-25 season after NBC renewed the pair of shows but spinoff Law & Order: Organized Crime is in a slightly more precarious position.
The network has renewed Law & Order for Season 24, while Law & Order: Svu will be back for Season 26.
The future of Law & Order: Organized Crime, which is in its fourth season, is still in discussion at the network. It has been the lowest rated of Dick Wolf’s NBC shows and has had a number of showrunners over its course. Matt Olmstead started out as showrunner, replaced by Ilene Chaiken, who was replaced by Barry O’Brien. Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (Law & Order: Svu) is one of the best shows on TV.
The crime series, also known as the first spin-off of Law & Order by Dick Wolf, debuted back in September of 1999, and has since gone on to become the longest-running primetime U.S. live-action series in the history of TV, and the only live-action ’90s series still producing new episodes.
The show includes stars like Christopher Meloni as Elliot Stabler (who left in 2011), and Mariska Hargitay as Olivia Benson.
The iconic opening provides the premise: “In the criminal justice system, sexually-based offenses are considered especially heinous. In New York City, the dedicated detectives who investigate these vicious felonies are members of an elite squad known as the Special Victims Unit. These are their stories.”

After twenty-five years, Law & Order: Svu faces the question of Olivia Benson's potential retirement, signaling a major shift in the series. Mariska Hargitay's portrayal of Olivia Benson has been the heart and soul of Svu, driving the story forward through various eras and emotional arcs. The current season sets up a potential exit for Benson, with hints of a transitioning cast and the spotlight on her character's emotional struggles.
After twenty-five years on the air, Law & Order: Svu has been building an undeniable legacy. From memorable characters and storylines to real-world effects that transcend the fourth wall, there's no denying that this procedural is about as iconic as it comes. Truthfully, a huge part of that is down to its consistent lead actress (and executive producer), Mariska Hargitay, as Captain Olivia Benson.

Credit: Virginia Sherwood/NBC Mariska Hargitay was born and raised in Los Angeles, but when she answered a casting call for a new Law & Order show in 1999, the show would be filming in New York City. When she won the starring role, little did she know she’d be spending the next 25 years (and counting) working in the Big Apple. We’ve spoken to Hargitay many times over the course of the show, and she acknowledged that her work on Svu has changed her not only professionally, but also personally. Airing from 1988 to 1990, each episode told a different story of a dark rooted and grim nature that takes place in this fictitious town on Elm Street, and now a brand new book will take us deeper into the series than ever before.

Law & Order Svu stars Mariska Hargitay and Chris Meloni have been linked together ever since they were cast in the show. Because of their bond, Hargitay was once called Meloni’s second wife, and Hargitay eventually caught wind of the title.

Hargitay and Meloni seemed almost inseparable as Svu partners Olivia Benson and Elliot Stabler. Seeing strong and impactful female characters on TV inspires us, rallying us to do better like these females have done whenever the chips were down.
Some of these characters have inspired us for years, like Svu’s Olivia Benson or Btvs’s Buffy Summers, while other females have only recently hit our TV screens, like The Way Home’s Del Landry. However, these female characters have resonated with us over the years.
Some of the stories may have hit too close to home, like Netflix’s Georgia Miller running from an abusive past, and we cheered her on every step of the way.
We want to honor and recognize these women during National Women’s Month. They’ve taught us that we can achieve our dreams and not let anyone mess with us.
Check out the list below:

Donnie Wahlberg hoped Blue Bloods would have the longevity of Svu, disappointed by its cancelation after 14 seasons. Budget cuts and industry strikes contributed to the show ending, despite its popularity and dedicated cast. The Blue Bloods cast took pay cuts to ensure season 14 was made, showing their commitment to the series' success.
When Donnie Wahlberg learned Detective Danny Reagan and the rest of the cast of Blue Bloods would not be solving crimes past season 14, his hopes for his best-known character were dashed. Blue Bloods, the CBS police procedural, premiered in September 2010 and lasted for 14 seasons before its cancelation. The first 13 seasons of Blue Bloods are all contiguous, while the 14th and final are split into 10 and 8-episode halves. Blue Bloods follows the Reagans, an NYC-based Irish American family who have traditionally worked in law enforcement.

[Editor’s note: The following contains spoilers for Season 23, Episode 4 of “Law & Order.”]
Among Sam Waterston’s last words as Jack McCoy was “integrity.”
The film and television actor walked away from “Law & Order” for good Thursday night, February 22, ending his 30-year stint as Dick Wolf’s most recognizable Manhattan D.A. in a mixed bag of an episode. An awkward Central Park swan song (goose song?), Season 23’s “Last Dance” demonstrates not only how much Waterston has changed as a performer — but just how little police procedurals have been able to evolve with socially divided network audiences in recent years.
Yes, Jack’s junkyard dog bravado gave way to a subtler anger in the series’ revival seasons; and he stopped sleeping with all those assistant district attorneys, which certainly helped. But the hero lawyer’s final chapter is chockfull of awkward political posturing that plays as indicative of a genre increasingly uncomfortable with its role in American culture. The...

The following contains major spoilers for Law & Order Season 23, Episode 6, "Last Dance," which debuted Thursday, February 22 on NBC.
It seemed impossible that Sam Waterston would ever be leaving Law & Order. The award-winning actor had been with the NBC procedural for literal decades, and became the common thread carrying it through numerous cast changes and an unexpected cancellation. But all good things must come to an end -- so Wolf Entertainment announced that Waterston would exit the series just weeks ahead of his final episode as District Attorney Jack McCoy.
That history is important to keep in mind when looking at McCoy's swan song. Law & Order Season 23, Episode 6, "Last Dance," is still a prototypical Law & Order episode. It's not an event of any kind -- which might disappoint fans who remember when McCoy made his debut all the way back in Season 5. But Waterston shows off...

Curry, moving over from Internal Affairs, is just looking to do some good and, as Aimé Donna Kelly puts it, learn “from the best.” In the February 22 episode of Law & Order: Svu, “Zone Rouge,” a cryptic message sends the team on a new track to find Maddie, the teen whom Benson has been trying to find since the Season 25 premiere. Plus, Benson tries to help a federal agent when the case hits too close to home, and Curry tries to make amends with Fin (Ice-t). Below, Kelly talks about Curry’s move over to Svu and previews this week’s case. It’s no secret how everyone feels about internal affairs in general, so how is the transition going to go for Curry? Aimé Donna Kelly: The transition is going pretty well.

The National Crime Information Center reported that, in 2016, there were 5,712 reports of missing American Indian and Alaska Native women and girls. However, the US Department of Justice's federal missing person database, NamUs, only logged...

A lot of attention to detail is paid to Hargitay’s character Olivia Benson. The detective’s hairstyle has been as important to Olivia’s presentation as the clothes she wears. It’s even coincided with her development and growth over the years. Many might remember that Olivia Benson sported a shorter hairdo in her earlier Svu appearances. Content Warning: This article discusses uncomfortable topics, such as sexual assault, violence, abuse, and murder.
Currently airing its 25th season, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit is easily one of the best crime TV shows of all time. Throughout the years, the series has portrayed some exceptional detectives who are the true heart of the long-running procedural. Even when some episodes and seasons failed to impress dedicated fans, audiences kept coming back for the beloved Olivia Benson (portrayed by Mariska Hargitay) and her team.
While the team of detectives keeps the fans coming back, it's the dark aspects of the show that have turned viewers away. Considering the series' uncomfortable, disturbing, and upsetting focal point, viewers know what they're getting into when watching an episode of Law & Order: Svu. Despite this knowledge, some villains were so infuriating or sickening that fans were driven from finishing the episode or even continuing the show.
