Industry-wide collaboration is key to a successful rollout of high dynamic range imagery on all types of cinema display technologies, asserted Universal’s vp of creative technologies Annie Chang during a Future of Cinema Summit, held Saturday during the opening day of the 100th Nab Show in Las Vegas.
Presented by the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers, the program featured an update on work that’s being done behind the scenes by individual companies and Hollywood-backed organizations, not just to roll out Hdr in theaters, but to maximize its creative potential with features such as higher brightness, deeper blacks and a wider range of colors.
Hdr isn’t a new concept, but for cinemas, today it’s accomplished with laser projectors. Barco exec Tom Bert estimated that of the roughly 200,000 cinema screens worldwide, roughly 50,000-60,000 auditoriums now offer laser projectors, rather than earlier lamp-based systems. Barco’s head...

Samsung and LG are among a number of tech companies that are quietly making a new push to Hollywood on the potential of LED display tech to replace theater projection systems that have been used since the birth of cinema. It would be a radical change.
A projection system, true to its name, projects images onto the big screen. An LED wall is akin to a sophisticated, massive TV screen, and its use would render the projection booth a thing of the past. At this early stage, major U.S. theater chains are not using the tech.
The companies are hesitant to share many details on their plans — Samsung’s Onyx LED displays for cinema are installed in roughly 100 cinema auditoriums worldwide, including at The Culver Theater in Culver City — but Hollywood insiders have recently seen new demonstrations of the tech, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

Ever since Disney+ series The Mandalorian began making news for its inventive use of an LED stage and virtual production pipeline for filming and incorporating real-time effects — en route to winning Emmys in VFX and cinematography, as well as a 2022 Engineering Emmy that was awarded to Industrial Light & Magic for the system’s development — these types of stages have become what is arguably the fastest-growing area of visual effects and production technology. But amid the explosive surge in LED stages, observers warn that the business, tech and creative models for these pricey installations require more understanding before their potential can be fully realized.
“We are tracking roughly 300 stages, up from only three in 2019,” Miles Perkins, industry manager of film and TV for Epic Games, maker of the Unreal Engine used in virtual production pipelines, reports of the rise in capacity stemming from investments from studios,...

Want to make a short film based on one of Stephen King's stories? Chances are that it'll only cost you a dollar...
Stephen King is, you might say, a bit prolific. With over 50 novels, 6 nonfiction books, and 200 short stories to his name (or Richard Bachman's), King has one of the hardest-working pens/typewriters/laptops in the writing world. And best of all, when it comes to King's work, quantity does equal quality.
That's probably why Hollywood is constantly optioning his countless works for big blockbuster film adaptations. Guys like Frank Darabont, Brian De Palma, Stanley Kubrick, George A. Romero, John Carpenter, Lawrence Kasdan, and Rob Reiner have all taken stabs (no pun intended) at his work. Many of them are even great films that hold their own, which is very rare in the novel-to-film adaptation business, especially when the source material is as high-profile as King's.

Directors: Jesse Baget, Elias Benavidez, Andrés Borghi, Jay Holben, Mike Kochansky, James Kondelik, Jon Kondelik, Bryan Norton, Antonio Padovan, Ryan Patch, Marc Roussel. Cast: Landon Ackerman and April Adamson. The first All Hallow's Eve came out in 2013. The first film hosted three fearsome short films. Each revolved around a murderous clown. This second release has expanded to eight films. This time the cast and crew have greatly increased, while the wraparound has decreased in importance. This film viewer enjoyed three films more than the rest, including: "A Boy's Life," "The Last Halloween," and "Alexia." These three stood out from the others by focusing on a horrifying and sometimes surprising tone. In the line-up, "The Last Halloween" appears second. This film, completed in 2014, follows four trick-or-treaters. This short quartet are out for candy, during an apocalypse. The locals are not very receptive to their demands for sweets. But, the tables turn as this short crew.

I'm still unsure of what to make of this film. It seems to be stuck somewhere between the teenage wastelands of the 80s and bizarro world. While excellently done, the movie has been sitting on the shelf since the Parker Lewis Can't Lose Days, that is until they could achieve the desired special effects. This makes it something of a rarity: it has an 80s feel, both musically and sartorially, but set against the backdrop of a dystopic futuristic society. It's this oddness which defies any type of rating so I'm leaving it blank, but I would still recommend it and like to see a sequel or someone steal the ideas used in this.
