Verdict? The film of August Wilson’s play is absorbing, intense. If we rate by quality of writing, acting skill, and the craft of direction, Denzel Washington’s film betters most of its fellow Best Picture nominees. It’s also something positive for the arts, a ‘black experience’ play that can’t be pigeonholed as merely black- themed. The appeal of its compelling characters goes beyond racial boundaries. Viola Davis did win a well- deserved Oscar, and this is fine work from one end to the other.

'Crash' movie: Ryan Phillippe. 'Crash' movie review: California tossin' and turnin' Screenwriter Paul Haggis' multiple award-winning directorial debut, Crash, is set in a Los Angeles that is part Quentin Tarantino, part Paul Thomas Anderson, part Spike Lee, part Bret Easton Ellis. Haggis' L.A. also happens to be a place with precious little in common with the Southern California metropolis located on Planet Earth. In the film, Haggis and co-screenwriter Robert Moresco tell us – or rather, scream at us – that the Angeleno boiling (definitely not melting) pot is about to explode at any moment, as Los Angeles denizens spend all their spare time hating, fearing, misunderstanding, and cheating on one another. And perhaps much of that is true, except that most of that hate, fear, misunderstanding, and cheating have absolutely nothing to do with ethnic or national differences. But not in this particular L.A., situated in some warped La...

Pixels
Written by Tim Herlihy & Timothy Dowling
Directed by Chris Columbus
USA, 2015
There are mild amusements to be found in Pixels. Nostalgia oozes from every cinematic pore, as director Chris Columbus weaves these videogame relics into a modern landscape. Unfortunately, rather than fully committing to his elegant premise, Columbus gets bogged down in unconvincing character development. It’s easier to believe a ginormous Pac-Man will chomp New York City than Kevin James will ever be President of the United States! Sandler fans and little kids might enjoy this rollcall of ‘80s game icons, but everyone else should just rent Ghostbusters instead.
Pixels is a love letter to old school gamers. The original nerds who spent way too much time (and money) at the local video arcade when they should have been cutting class and sneaking cigarettes, instead. Like any self-respecting clique, these gamers had their own de facto leaders. In this particular case,...

'Munich' movie cover 'Munich' movie review: Steven Spielberg tackles political time-space continuum in wildly uneven but ultimately satisfying thriller Alternately intriguing and irritating, thought-provoking and banal, subtle and patronizing, the biggest surprise about Steven Spielberg's Munich is that it – however grudgingly – works. The film, which Spielberg himself has referred to as a "prayer for peace," follows five men contracted by the Israeli government to avenge the massacre of that country's athletes at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich. Sizable chunks of this political thriller with a Message (capital "M") are simplistically written, clumsily acted, and handled with the director's notoriously heavy touch, but the old adage – blood begets blood – even if somewhat muddled, is too timely not to make an impact. Complex 'Munich' movie plot Based on George Jonas' 1984 book Vengeance: The True Story of an Israeli Counter-Terrorist Team, whose veracity has been questioned in some quarters, Munich begins as...

They've done what they've had to do to survive on AMC's The Walking Dead, brining hope and despair to palpable life on the small screen with gritty realism every week. Covered in grime, splattered in blood, and trudging down the sun-baked backroads and brush-bordered trails this season, the stellar cast and crew of The Walking Dead have paid their dues and then some, and now they're getting a tip of the cap in return with seven nominations for the 41st Annual Saturn Awards.
Andrew Lincoln, Norman Reedus, Emily Kinney, Melissa McBride, Chandler Riggs, and Andrew J. West have all earned nominations, with the TV series itself receiving one as well. The American Cinema Editors have taken the time when most of us are still enjoying a little bit of downtime before truly getting back into the swing of things this new year to announce the film and television nominees for the 65th Annual Ace Eddie Awards. Among the nominees are a couple of personal favorites in Whiplash (Tom Cross) and The Imitation Game (William Goldbenbrrg). I also think something must be said for Boyhood, though editing a film over the course of 12 years doesn't really leave much wiggle room. You're essentially editing 12 short films because once you're a year removed... you're a year removed. There are six nominees in the Best Edited Feature Film (Dramatic) category as a result of a tie providing for one additional nominee for the second time ever. Among the comedy/musical nominees I would like to believe The Grand Budapest Hotel (Barney Pilling) would be the front-runner,...

Other nominees for the top dramatic film honor at the awards known as the Ace/Eddies are “American Sniper,” “Gone Girl,” “The Imitation Game,” “Nightcrawler” and “Whiplash.” The category had six nominees instead of five because of a tie.

Country Bumpkin: Bond’s Debut a Grating Escapade of Disingenuous Cliché
Swedish born Fredrik Bond, who’d made a notable name for himself as a successful director of commercials, makes his feature film debut with Charlie Countryman, unfortunately a clipped version of its initial moniker, originally titled the The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman upon its premiere at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival. This indeed is a misfortune, because Bond’s catchy title was the only original aspect about the film, now with as denuded a calling card as its content is absent anything of consequence. Inane, banal, and thoroughly unrealistic, the film plays like the interrupted fantasy of some melancholic teenager who falls asleep listening to ultra-hip tracks on his iPod.

Even though Guardians of the Galaxy has been shooting for almost two weeks already, Marvel and Disney have just sent out a press release making it official. This movie is going to kick so much ass! There are a lot of people that aren't familiar with this comic book property, but they are going to flip when they see what's in store for them! The stuff shown at Comic-Con was so freakin' cool!
I think the newest piece of info to come out of this press release is confirmation that Glenn Close is playing Nova Prime in the film.
Burbank, Calif. (July 23, 2013) – “Guardians of the Galaxy,” the next epic adventure from Marvel Studios has started shooting at the UK’s Shepperton Studios. Directed by James Gunn (“Slither,”“Super”) from his screenplay, with a story by Nicole Perlman and Gunn, the film will introduce audiences to a whole new side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Along with the announcement, we have confirmation of the full cast and the characters they will be playing. Take a look at the concept art below to get an idea of what the main heroes will look like in the movie.
We were at the Marvel press conference, which included most of the Guardians of the Galaxy cast, and we’ve included some photos below. Doctor Who fans who didn’t catch the Hall H panel should be surprised to see that Karen Gillan shaved her head for the role of Nebula.

Comic Con 2013 has been an amazing event for Marvel. First we find out the new title for Avengers 2, now we get some awesome details on Guardians Of The Galaxy (Including the new "Usual Suspects-esque" line-up photo). Hollywoodnews.com: Tate Taylor’s ensemble dramedy “The Help,” his crowd-pleasing adaptation of close friend Kathryn Stockett’s best-selling novel, has been an awards contender since … well, since it opened back in August. And Taylor will tell you, it feels like he hasn’t stopped talking about the film, his cast, and the film’s impact since late summer, when the story of brave Southern women fighting for basic human rights captivated filmgoers.
I felt bad making Taylor talk even more about his movie, but with the awards season kicking into high gear, I knew I’d be one of thousands hoping to get the young director’s opinion on the happenings surrounding “The Help.” And it’s only going to get busier. The movie just grabbed eight Critics’ Choice Movie Award nominations, including Bets Picture. The next day, it claimed multiple Screen Actors Guild noms including Best Ensemble.

Tomorrow sees the release of Bollywood thriller Teen Patti, starring Indian screen legend Amitabh Bachchan and Ben Kingsley.
Bachchan plays a mathematical genius who finds a winning formula and decides to prove it through the gambling world. He gets a group of students involved in illegal card-dealing dens and soon greed and blackmail take over.
Directed by Leena Yadav and edited by Oscar-winner Hughes Winborne (Crash, The Pursuit of Happyness) to give it an international and more accessible feel, the end result - as judged from preview footage - is a slick, taut, colourful thriller. I've included the trailer below.
Presented by Hinduja Ventures and Serendipity Films, it's described as exploring 'mathematics, gambling, greed, youth, wisdom and most importantly choice'.
In an interview with Bollyspice, Yadav explained: "The film, as the title suggests, is that of a game called Teen Patti (three cards), which is basically Flush. The story is about a mathematician,...

Director Anurag Basu was none too pleased with this creative meddling. But there was little he could do. Now it's Teen Patti which has roped in the services of a Hollywood editor over and above the desi editor Kaushik Das. Hughes Winborne who has edited the Will Smith starrers The Pursuit Of Happyness and Seven Pounds and also won an Oscar for his editing in Paul Haggis's Crash has done the 're-edit' of Teen Patti. A Los Angeles appeals court has ruled Crash producer Bob Yari cannot sue the Producers Guild Of America (Pga) and the Academy Of Motion Picture Arts And Sciences (Ampas) in an effort to be awarded an Oscar retroactively.
Yari was one of six producers on Crash, but only two producers are eligible to be nominated in the Best Picture category - an Academy Award the movie won in March 2006.
The Pga selected writer/director/producer Haggis and Cathy Shulman for Crash, a decision approved by Oscar bosses at Ampas.
Yari, who helped finance the film, was furious when he learned he and three other producers had been left out, and took legal action in February 2006.
A court ruled that same year that private organisations can make their own decisions regarding awards, a decision upheld by the 2nd District Court Of Appeals on Tuesday.
Yari describes the ruling as "unfortunate".
As well as Best Picture, Crash also won Oscars for Best Screenplay (Haggis) and Best Editing (Hughes Winborne).
