Overview of A Man in Full A Man in Full, featuring Jeff Daniels and Diane Lane, recently premiered on Netflix. This adaptation of Tom Wolfe’s novel seemed promising on paper, starting with its intriguing plot where Atlanta real estate mogul Charlie Croker faces sudden bankruptcy. The story stretches into the realms of political corruption and personal despair, matching the intensity one would expect from such a high-stakes narrative adapted by David E. Kelley. Yet, the series falls astonishingly short of delivering the depth or complexity promised. Middling Execution Despite High Expectations The promising trailer released mid-April hinted at a gritty,

Back when he was finishing “Dumb and Dumber To” in 2014, Jeff Daniels was ready to leave show business. “I’m done,” he told Jim Carrey. “You can’t stop man,” Carrey said. “You can’t, you’re creative, you’re going to create something, you’ve got to keep creating. That’s what we do!”
These days, Carrey’s off in Hawaii painting. And when Daniels is not acting, he’s writing songs and plays, which he mounts at his Michigan hometown’s Purple Rose Theatre Company. “It’s what keeps me going,” Daniels told me on Zoom. “It keeps me alive. It’s what I’m supposed to do. It’s helped me between the phone calls for the acting jobs. Because you can go insane staring at that phone. They’ll call you when they need you. Jeff Daniels’ recently released series, A Man in Full, has been taking the world by storm. As though food for critics, its reviews have been nothing but stellar. Audiences have not been able to get enough of the series, and this is not surprising, considering its cast and its creators. However, more aspects make up a show, and the most important is the story.

The show’s premise is truly spectacular, following the classic rich-turned-poor trope, but taking an approach so unique that one cannot stop watching. One of the main reasons for its appeal was the character of Charlie Croker. As his name suggested, the man was a crook, dishonesty being a living-breathing entity in his life, until all was taken from him as payment.

“A Man in Full,” the sprawling Tom Wolfe novel now adapted by screenwriter David E. Kelley into a limited series for Netflix, centers on a protagonist who, for all his resources, can’t bend the world to his will. Over six episodes, the show finds itself in a similar bind. “A Man in Full” boasts an all-star cast, led by Jeff Daniels as Atlanta real estate tycoon Charlie Croker; an Oscar-winning multi-hyphenate behind the camera; and a dense lode of source material. But the show ends up far less than the sum of its parts, an oddly generic and muted take on a larger-than-life American story.
Wolfe spent the bulk of his career as a longform journalist before turning to fiction. His first novel, “Bonfire of the Vanities,” was a social satire of 1980s New York that helped define the Wall Street boom’s impact on culture. For his sophomore effort,...

A Man in Full is highly entertaining, which should be no surprise. The series is an adaptation from David E. Kelley, the brilliant mind behind Ally McBeal, Netflix’s The Lincoln Lawyer, and HBO’s Big Little Lies. Kelley has been in the thick of television since the days of Doogie Howser, M.D.
Kelley brings his signature brand of strong characters, a blend of genres, and sharp dialogue that you need to figure out just how deep the cut goes. The bench of actors is deep (and the likes of directors Regina King and Thomas Schlamme) with stars Jeff Daniels and Bill Camp, who turn the whip-smart and clever wordplay into instantly memorable lines that stay with the viewer long after the episode is over.
You wish A Man in Full had taken the time to develop the highly ambitious source material into something that better reflects modern societal dilemmas.

Every man in “A Man In Full” is a piece of shit. They’re selfish, they’re abusive, they’re obsessed with their balls — not one could hold a baby without making them cry. But the first sign that Netflix’s six-episode series has gone awry is that they’re not total pieces of shit. They’re mostly, partly, or just a little bit shitty, and their failures to embrace the truest, richest, most complete versions of themselves turns out toothless satire, sharing little of note about these buffoonish bros and even less about modern society.

He’s both a man of the people and a man often described as an ass hole, possibly because guests at his country estate are forced to watch horses have sex. Jeff Daniels and Diane Lane deliver stellar performances in Netflix‘s adaptation of Tom Wolfe’s “A Man in Full,” but despite their brilliance, the series struggles to find its footing amidst a tangled web of drama and Southern-fried charm.
In this sweeping six-episode saga, Daniels portrays the pugnacious Atlanta real estate tycoon Charlie Croker, whose empire teeters on the brink of collapse with debts soaring into the billions. Lane shines as Martha, Croker’s razor-sharp ex-wife, adding depth and complexity to their tumultuous relationship.
What to expect from A Man in Full?
As the narrative unfolds, Croker’s financial woes trigger a series of confrontations with bankers, associates, and political rivals, exposing the seedy underbelly of power and corruption in Atlanta’s elite circles. Alongside the main plot, a secondary storyline follows the plight of Conrad, a man thrown into jail after an altercation with a police officer, and Croker’s lawyer,...

Jeff Daniels and Diane Lane rarely put in anything less than stellar performances, but the Emmy winner and Oscar nominee are rarely as good as they are in Netflix’s adaptation of Tom Wolfe’s A Man in Full.
In a fortnight that has seen the premieres of Hulu’s Lily Gladstone and Riley Keough starring Under the Bridge, the Elisabeth Moss spy thriller FX series Veil, HBO’s The Sympathizer, based on Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pulitzer Prize winner and a third season of the still wonderfully wicked Hacks launching today on Max, executive producers Regina King and David E. Kelley have put a real winner on the track for Netflix with A Man in Full.
On any other show, the never better Daniels as a pugnacious Atlanta real estate tycoon Charlie Croker on the brink of bankruptcy, and Lane as his revitalized razor-sharp ex-wife Martha would be more than enough of a payoff.

Nearly four years ago, Disney+ attempted to adapt Tom Wolfe’s The Right Stuff. There’s no reason for you to remember the series — it wasn’t renewed — because it was the one thing a Tom Wolfe adaptation should never be: wholly forgettable.
The innocuously mediocre series served to disabuse me of one of my favorite pet theories — that De Palma’s adaptation of The Bonfire of the Vanities failed not because of incompatibility between story and storyteller, but because his tapestry lacked sufficient scope. De Palma captured a lot of Wolfe’s literary excess with his camera, but just couldn’t capture the narrative excess in two hours, leading me to hope that someday somebody would do Bonfire as a miniseries (attempts to do just that remain ongoing). But Disney+’s The Right Stuff made it pretty clear that the key to adapting Wolfe is capturing the size and tone of his prose,...

In the famous “Church and State” episode from Succession’s penultimate season, Kendall Roy eulogizes his father with a speech acknowledging the man’s brutality while celebrating the “magnificent, awful force of him,” the “vim” that made the world a more interesting place to be. Netflix’s adaption of Tom Wolfe’s A Man in Full tries to conjure that same sort of figure with its central character: Charlie Croker (Jeff Daniels), a powerful, complicated businessman whose flaws are glaring but whose gravitational pull is undeniable. But Charlie lacks the vigor to live up to that description, and so does the series that revolves around him.
Daniels plays Charlie with a slurring Southern accent that makes him sound like he’s speaking through ill-fitting dentures. Charlie is a college football star turned real estate mogul, and something of a kingpin in Georgia. He owns a vast business empire, presiding over...

HBO’s Succession became the network’s new Game of Thrones: the same political schemes and backstabbing of the people rich and powerful beyond others’ imagination, but set in modern-day New York instead of medieval Westeros.
But everyone wants a piece of that high-stakes big-money success, so Netflix has been working hard to create its own Succession. From what we see, they’ve succeeded!
A Man in Full Breaks the Wheel
Most TV shows about the rich and powerful in the United States are set in New York; it’s something of a law at this point. But Netflix breaks the everlasting cycle of aerial Manhattan shots in its upcoming limited series A Man in Full: unlike Succession and other like-minded shows, it will take us to Atlanta, Georgia. Surprising, isn’t it?

"I don't just want to take down your ex-husband, I want to devour him." Oh damn! It seems the battle has begun. Netflix has debuted the full official trailer for the series A Man in Full, arriving for streaming early May in a few weeks (first teaser here). It's adapted from the novel "A Man in Full" written by the late Tom Wolfe, a book many are familiar with already. The main character is Charles Croker, once a college football star, now a late-middle-aged Atlanta conglomerate king whose outsize ego has at last hit up against reality. When Atlanta real estate mogul Charlie Croker faces sudden bankruptcy, political and business interests collide as Charlie defends his empire from those attempting to capitalize on his fall from grace. Starring Jeff Daniels as Croker, with Tom Pelphrey, Diane Lane, Lucy Liu, William Jackson Harper, Aml Ameen, Sarah Jones, Jon Michael Hill, and Chanté Adams.

What happens when a powerful man faces the prospect of losing his power? A total shitshow.
In Netflix’s “A Man in Full,” Jeff Daniels plays real estate tycoon Charlie Croker, whose power is threatened by a sudden bankruptcy, conflicts of interest, and people relishing his fall from every corner. For a man who had it all, things are about to get significantly more treacherous. The trailer evokes the petty politics and animosity of HBO’s “Succession,” which has been away for almost a year and whose fans will surely be seeking this exact strain of comfort (“We got off your medical records. Turns out you’re a pussy”).
The six-episode limited series comes from writer, executive producer, and showrunner David E. Kelley and is based on the bestselling novel by Tom Wolfe. Regina King, Matthew Tinker, Thomas C Wolfe, Alexandra Wolfe, and Tommy Schlamme also executive produce, with King...

Netflix is throwing a last-minute limited series Emmy contender into the ring with “A Man in Full.” The six-episode drama series premieres May 2, the streaming service announced Wednesday.
The series stars two-time Emmy winner Jeff Daniels as Charlie Croker, an Atlanta real estate mogul facing sudden financial and reputational ruin who has to fend off enemies that, sensing weakness, are coming for his business empire. In a teaser accompanying the date announcement, Croker looks out over the city from a high floor of a skyscraper while he ignores an urgently ringing phone. “I heard once a man reaches a point where he’s older,” he intones in a Southern-accented voiceover. “That ain’t the tragedy. The tragedy is he refuses to recognize it.” Then another voices asks “Mr. Croker, are you ready?”

Griffin Dunne and Rosanna Arquette’s night of farce and coincidence is a tale in which strangeness and anxiety loom large, leading to a woozy punchline
Martin Scorsese’s 1985 screwball noir is now on rerelease. It felt at the time – and feels now – like an atypical Scorsese movie, a more generic and less auteurist project he accepted from its producer-star Griffin Dunne while progress on his Last Temptation of Christ had temporarily stalled. Maybe he thought of it as “road work”, but time has lent interest to After Hours; the obviously comic and farcical aspect has receded and its strangeness and anxiety loom larger, in a string of unsexy encounters and chilling coincidences culminating in a desolate close-dance scene to the accompaniment of Peggy Lee’s Is That All There Is? It’s a shaggy dog story leading to a punchline, of sorts, but one that feels woozy and illusory...

This year’s Oscars were as much a celebration of books as they were cinema. Five of the 10 best picture nominees were based on books, and three of those – “Oppenheimer,” “Poor Things” and “The Zone of Interest” – took home the most statues overall. Even the winner for best animated picture, Hayao Miyazaki’s “The Boy and the Heron,” was loosely inspired by a 1937 novel Miyazaki had read as a child.

An Oscar-winning actress and lifestyle entrepreneur collides with a retired optometrist on a Utah ski slope. The optometrist sues, claiming a life-altering brain injury. Not so fast, says the starlet; it was his fault, and she countersues, seeking damages of… one dollar. The media, not surprisingly, laps it up, covering the ensuing trial with a breathless gravity best reserved for just about anything else.

The legendary test pilot Chuck Yeager took Philip Kaufman, the writer/director of the lauded 1983 space race epic “The Right Stuff,” for a ride in his plane during production. And at one point the man who broke the sound barrier in 1947 turned over the controls to Kaufman as he also turned off the engine. “He thought it would scare me being one of the ‘Hollywood’ guys,” Kaufman told me in a 2003 L.A. Times interview. “I just sort of looked at him and smiled, because I knew there was something blessed about this man. The funny thing about Yeager is that he would drive out to the sets, particularly in the high desert, and he would not go above the speed limit. He was the fastest man alive, but he wouldn’t go over 55 because he knew how dangerous it was on the highway”

Only Super Bowl weekend had a lower total gross in 2023, with around $63 million for this weekend. But even on a weekend when no film grossed over $15 million, it matters to studios who gets the bragging rights that come with taking the top spot.
Warner Bros. sent its estimate of $14.7 million for the second weekend of “The Nun II.” Disney had just before claimed $14.5 million for “A Haunting in Venice,” the latest Kenneth Branagh as Hercule Poirot Agatha Christie film.
