It’s time for another episode of the Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? video series, and with this one we’re preparing for director Eli Roth’s long-awaited slasher Thanksgiving – which reaches theatres this Friday, November 17th – by looking back at his 2002 feature debut Cabin Fever (watch it Here). To hear all about it, check out the video embedded above.
Directed by Roth from a screenplay he wrote with Randy Pearlstein, Cabin Fever has the following synopsis: Bert, a college student vacationing with friends in the mountains, mistakenly shoots a local man with a skin infection while hunting in the woods. Panicking, he abandons the scene and leaves the man for dead. When the man stumbles into a reservoir, he infects the water supply, and soon one of Bert’s friends becomes infected. The friends struggle to stop the contagious, flesh-eating disease while on the run from a group...

The episode of Best Horror Movie You Never Saw covering 2001 Maniacs was Written by Cody Hamman, Narrated by Kier Gomes, Edited by Juan Jimenez, Produced by John Fallon and Tyler Nichols, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
Robert Englund doing a demented Colonel Sanders impression. Lin Shaye putting on a deadly song and dance routine. Enough politically incorrect elements to offend pretty much everybody. Buckets of gore. Gratuitous nudity. And a cameo appearance by Eli Roth, playing his Cabin Fever character. Put all of this together and you get 2001 Maniacs (watch it Here). The director calls it a “splatstick” movie. Splatter combined with slapstick comedy. We call it The Best Horror Movie You Never Saw.
Herschell Gordon Lewis was a classy guy, but he specialized in making movies that were not classy. His aim was to give the grindhouse and drive-in crowds the things Hollywood wasn’t giving them. Noting...

Riddle me this – why remake Cabin Fever, a cult-classic that demands no update, and furthermore, why use the Same stinkin’ script? It’s only been 15 years since Eli Roth launched his gory brand through this little creepshow, and each victim’s festering wounds still hold up surprisingly well against today’s effects, both indie and mainstream.
Granted, Roth does lodge a producing credit, so new director Travis Zariwny is in good graces, but original ideas are already disappointingly scarce enough. There’s no plausible reason to throw a movie we’ve already seen into the 2016 horror mix. No matter how trivial both sequels might have been, at least they attempted something Different. Don’t believe the marketing campaign for Cabin Fever (2016), and its claims that new kill sequences revamp Roth’s infectious brainchild. This is the ultimate remake cash-grab, in the most unnecessary of ways.
Do I need to run a plot recap here?...

After its six-year hiatus, the festival will present three features, including "Guiseppe Makes a Movie," "Jauja" and Bobcat Goldthwait's latest film,"Call Me Lucky." Goldthwait's documentary "Call Me Lucky" follows the volatile but brilliant comic Barry Crimmins and his experience with activism, comedy and politics. The documentary showcases his immense influence over renowned comedians, as well as his turbulent, but inspiring life story. "Giuseppe Makes A Movie" follows filmmaker/musician Giuseppe Andrews as he captures the psychotic and intriguing characters that live in his town of Ventura, California. Nobody — and that means Nobody — makes a movie like Giuseppe Andrews. The insane antics committed to produce Giuseppe’s 2007 epic Garbanzo Gas forms the basis of the documentary Giuseppe Makes a Movie, which is embarking on a North American screening tour this month. Dates and locations are below, which includes stops in Montreal; Los Angeles; Portland, Or; Austin, TX; and more.
Giuseppe Makes a Movie is directed by Adam Rifkin, who previously directed the cult hit Detroit Rock City, which co-starred Giuseppe and seemed like a terrific vehicle to launch the quirky young actor into near instant stardom.
But, Giuseppe had other ideas.
Shunning the Hollywood system, Giuseppe instead chose to work behind the camera and make movies in an incredibly unlikely location — the trailer park in which he lives with his biggest supporter, his father.

The Festival du Nouveau Cinema has arrived and because of it’s strong line-up, there is no way it is possible to see everything worth watching. Faced with an impossible task I proposed myself to focus on just one section of this year’s festival, Temps Ø, which is celebrating it’s 10th year in 2014. This section features the more obscure and rebel films of the Fnc, programed for an audience who enjoy witty cinematic experiences. My most anticipated films from the Temps Ø section this year is a mix of genres and styles that explore different themes and influences.

Title: Giuseppe Makes a Movie Director: Adam Rifkin A lot of independent filmmakers talk a good game about sacrificing for their art. Then there’s Giuseppe Andrews, who in ”Giuseppe Makes a Movie” literally wipes the ass (not once, but twice) of one of his alcoholic actors, who’s shit his pants. This and more is chronicled in director Adam Rifkin’s oddly engaging, briskly paced documentary snapshot of actor-musician-director Andrews, which gives an overview of the process he typically employs in shooting myriad $1,000 productions starring an assortment of tweakers, alcoholics and vagabonds from a trailer park in Ventura, California. As a young actor, Andrews had bit parts in “Independence Day” and “Never Been Kissed,” [ Read More ]

Group of high school students, on prom night, are infected with the same virus from part one after drinking water contaminated from the events that took place in the earlier film. The students not only have to contend with everyone around them dying, but also a secret government agency intent on covering up everything.
Immensely entertaining sequel is full of energy, gore, bloodshed, offbeat characters, cringe worthy moments, references to horror movie classics & pop culture and dead on parody involving teen movie cliches. The first one faltered in presenting a film that was jerky and uneven. The shifts in tone were jarring. With Cabin Fever 2, even though the film is tackling a lot of subject matter, the film is more linear and cohesive in narrative structure. The film flows more seamlessly.

Another week in October, another bounty crop of horror DVDs and Blu-rays. This week we have home entertainment from recent theatrical releases of nightmares of the mind as well as re-releases of classic and campy horror, all with boatloads of extras.
Then there are other horror titles that are being re-released on Blu-ray or in packs for double dipping. On top of that, horror offerings from Asia, past seasons of TV shows, manga, novels, and even video games are all vying for our pocketbooks. And we still have four more weeks of October to go.
Next year October needs to begin in August.
Human Centipede: First Sequence
Directed by Tom Six
Human Centipede: First Sequence (review) was a sensation ever since its first mention. Stephen Colbert even talked about it at the 2010 Emmys Awards broadcast! The premise cannot be simpler. Two pretty American girls are on a road trip through Europe.

Chicago – Horror fans heard the buzz surrounding “Cabin Fever” for months before it came out and the film launched Mr. Eli Roth to the “Hostel” films and even a role in the multiple Oscar nominee “Inglourious Basterds”. That film has now been released on Blu-ray to coincide with its straight-to-dvd sequel “Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever,” itself directed by an already-acclaimed new horror director, “House of the Devil“‘s Ti West.
“Cabin Fever 2” DVD Rating: 1.0/5.0
“Cabin Fever” Blu-Ray Rating: 3.0/5.0
“Cabin Fever” undeniably had a twisted, dark sense of humor but West’s “Cabin fever 2” takes it several steps further, practically pitching his sequel as a comedic spoof of ’80s teen horror flicks. He moves the action to a high school and keeps the flesh-eating action in place, but his tone is severely tongue-in-cheek from the animated opening credits to exaggerated faculty members to the appearances by over-the-top personalities like Mark Borchardt,...

Now, I realize that refusing to toss Eli Roth into the wood chipper is a stance that goes against the grain of this site. However, if you can look past that ridiculous "torture porn" label and check out Cabin Fever -- Roth's love letter to 1980's horror movies that he grew up watching -- you just might realize why the movie was the toast of the 2002 Toronto Film Festival and grossed over $30 million on a $1.5 million budget (not to mention DVD sales and a recent Blu-Ray release). As a rather nihilistic yet amusing homage to movies like Evil Dead, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and Night of the Living Dead, Cabin Fever also carried its own profoundly scary social implications. The script, by Roth and co-writer Randy Pearlman, introduced the dynamic between five spoiled and self-indulgent suburban college grads who treat nature as a vacation destination of most quaint proportions ("It's so cute.

In the words of Mallory Knox, sometimes things can just be ‘too eager’. Such is the case with Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever, a film about which I can surprisingly say a number of positive things. All of those things, however, have pretty much been entirely used up by the time the thirty minute mark has come and gone, and more than half the movie remains.
As the ending of the first film led us to believe would happen, the flesh-eating virus is spreading out of the forest and into the local townships, infecting victims through both direct (say, having another infected person spew blood directly into your face) and indirect (drinking infected waters) means. This being a sequel on a larger scale, this would also have to affect an environment that is just as claustrophobic but contains just as many possibilities for outrageously inappropriate and stupid behavior.
Enter the prom.

Questioning Greatness with Adam Rifkin:
Earth’S Premiere Storyteller
We (Bob Rose, me, I?) at the Opinion In A Haystack Department are proud to announce that I (we?) were (was?) given the chance to pick the brain bucket of Hollywood’s supreme philosopher and film-creationist, Sir Adam Rifkin (facebook, twitter, myspace.) He’s the filmmaker responsible for Detroit Rock City, The Chase, The Dark Backward, and, more recently, the award winning Look. I was able to sit down with Mr. Rifkin, in front of our respective computers, and interview him, via email, about a plethora of assorted, varied, diverse, sundry, indiscriminate, and heavily kaleidoscopic ideas.
I originally sent Mr. Rifkin over 3,000 questions, most of which involved very uncomfortable queries about his family lineage, sexual fears, and Laserdisc-replica collection. He answered all of them in full detail, thus passing the interview-qualification-process, which allowed me to send him the 16 questions you will find below.

Like most of the moviegoing free world, I was thrilled to hear that The Hurt Locker star Jeremy Renner was nominated for a Best Actor Academy Award. Renner clearly gave the most compelling and engaging performance of the year and hopefully the nomination will propel him from “Isn’t he the guy from …?” status to regular leading man.
While I’ll be rooting for Renner, sadly I think he’ll lose out to Jeff Bridges for Crazy Heart, another deserving performance, but in an otherwise lousy movie. At least The Hurt Locker is a great film and one of the most visually inventive mainstream films of 2009. I’m rooting for the film in general, especially a Best Director win for Kathryn Bigelow.
But enough prognosticating. While Jeremy Renner hasn’t been in anything I would personally call an “underground” film, he does have a connection to the underground film world covered regularly on Bad Lit.

‘Tis the season to start feeling jolly, so here’s an old holiday short film from horror maestro Tim Sullivan, A Christmas Treat. In fact, this is Sullivan’s first short film directed back when he was an Nyu student back in the ’80s. It’s a really well done short with a nice, slow set-up and a terrific punchline. It reminds me a lot of the old Tales From the Darkside TV show, which would have been a contemporary at the time this was produced.
I don’t think I’ve written about Tim Sullivan on Bad Lit before, but he’s one helluva nice guy and a wonderful horror movie director. There are two films by him you need to check out if you haven’t already. When Lionsgate first announced a sequel to Eli Roth's Cabin Fever without the involvement of Eli Roth, my initial interest level was extremely low. It seemed like it would be just another direct-to-dvd horror flick that had no hope of living up to the original, something that would be instantly forgotten. But then somewhere along the way, they announced that it was being directed by Ti West, and after seeing his skill behind the camera in The House of the Devil, I started to get curious. However, the back and forth game continued as West came out and publicly disowned the movie, saying that Lionsgate recut the film without his approval. Would it ever see the light of day? A DVD release date [1] was finally revealed last week, and on top of this a trailer for the film was just released online which, if nothing else, looks ridiculously bloody.

Cabin Fever 2 from director Ti West is experiencing a great deal of controversy, as the film makes its way to a February 16, 2010 straight-to-dvd release. West has effectively disowned Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever over a dispute with Lionsgate Films involving cuts and edits. The film, cast, and crew have gone through a lot to get the film out to fans, and this first trailer for Cabin Fever 2 looks well-designed, hilarious, and definitely worth a watch. Via Styd, here’s your first look at Ti West’s sequel to Eli Roth’s horror gem “Cabin Fever”. The sequel is called “Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever”, which helpfully denotes the film’s sequel pedigree, as well as, er, seasonal background. This time around, the flesh-eating disease shows up at a high school prom thanks to a popular brand of bottled water, which once again proves my point that paying for bottled water is just a bad, bad idea. They should drink from the tap like I do. And yes, that skin disease I have is purely coincidental. In any case, once the disease spreads, it’s up to our high school full of plucky 20-somethings playing teens to escape the school before they’re quarantined, or worst, the fat kid starts eating them. Okay, the last part is probably untrue. Probably. Starring Rider Strong, Noah Segan, Alexander Isaiah Thomas,...

I wasn't the biggest fan of Eli Roth's Cabin Fever, but I Loved Ti West's work on House of the Devil (review) and am now interested in anything he's got coming 'round the mountain- even if it is mired in studio meddling. Word is that West wanted to go a completely nutso and off-the-wall with his sequel, Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever which is why the vibe feels very different here.
Despite the rumors of Lionsgate getting in the way of West's vision, I think the trailer works and looks pretty dang fun. Definitely worth checking out.
Synopsis:
A high school prom faces a deadly threat: a flesh-eating virus that spreads via a popular brand of bottled water.
Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever stars Rider Strong, Noah Segan, Alexander Isaiah Thomas, Giuseppe Andrews, and Alexi Wasser and arrives on DVD and Blu-Ray February 16, 2010 from Lionsgate Home Entertainment.

It has been shelved for years and features no involvement by Eli Roth, but the trailer for director Ti West's (The House of the Devil) Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever looks promising. West brings the flesh-eating virus to the prom and all hell breaks loose when the students drink some infected punch. It's Prom Night with a deadly virus! Rider Strong and Giuseppe Andrews return with Judah Friedlander, Larry Fessenden, and Alexi Wasser for Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever, arriving on DVD and Blu-Ray February 16, 2010.

The trailer for Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever is here and Shock Till You Drop has your exclusive first look at this sequel to Eli Roth's 2003 skin-crawling feature debut. Roth is not back in the director's chair, however, it was put in the capable hands of Ti West who delivered this year's The House of the Devil . He takes the flesh-eating virus to a high school prom where the attendees drink infected punch...and things get incredibly gory. Rider Strong returns briefly to bridge the two films. Noah Segan, Alexander Isaiah Thomas, Giuseppe Andrews and Alexi Wasser also star. Put on your raincoat, this trailer gets wet! Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever arrives on DVD and Blu-Ray February 16, 2010 from Lionsgate Home Entertainment. Check out our exclusive interviews with the...

Cabin Fever 2 from director Ti West will hit DVD and Blu-Ray formats beginning February 16th, 2010. The film will have a gag real, director's commentary, and making of featurette. Not to be missed, Cabin Fever 2 will start right where the previous film ended. Unfortunately for some high school students "a killer virus" will ruin a prom or making it a lot more bloody interesting at the very least. A trailer is currently unavailable, but a synopsis is.
A synopsis for Cabin Fever 2 here:
"Cabin Fever delivered terror in the flesh but your flesh will crawl with Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever, the bloodcurdling sequel to hit horror film. Days after a killer virus consumed his friends; Paul emerges from a ditch by a river. Though his body has been ravaged by the virus, he is determined to survive and to warn others of the danger. Note: This review does contain minor Spoilers
Cheerfully gory and revolting, Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever is the fun sequel to Eli Roth's cult classic that recently made it's debut on the last night of Screamfest L.A.
Starting immediately after the events of the first film, Paul (top-billed Rider Strong in a two-minute cameo) climbs out of the creek with the virus eating away at him, and he's promptly mowed down by a schoolbus (hardly a 'spoiler', having been revealed in the film's marketing materials).
The bottled water company from the first film delivers drinks contaminated with the flesh-eating virus to a local high school, where likable John (Noah Segan) and his nerdy friend Alex (Rusty Kelley) attend class. John has an unrequited crush on Cassie (Alexi Wasser), but is afraid of her angry kickboxer boyfriend.
By the plot, you can see the sequel is a classic John Hughes movie set-up,...

Forget Swine Flu, the only illness you want to be innoculated against is the flesh-rotting sickness that spread through Cabin Fever!
When Cabin Fever opened in 2002, with it's audacious mix of horror, gore and comedy, it was a surprise hit. Introducing the world to Fango reader-turned-filmmaker Eli Roth and scream queens Cerina Vincent & Jordan Ladd, Cabin Fever got strong reviews and the cover of Fangoria. Even though it had an ending that left itself open for one in a genre that thrives on them, Cabin Fever never got a sequel... until now.
Seven years after the original, Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever made it's world premiere at Screamfest Horror Film Festival at Hollywood's Mann Chinese 6 this past weekend. Directed by Ti West (House Of The Devil), it picks up where the original left off.

On Saturday, La Screamfest hosted one of the first ever public screenings of the long delayed Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever. Was it worth the wait? BC says Yes! Gross out gags, Way politically incorrect humor, and no little pancake kids combine to make a sequel that lives up to the original. Before the film, BC got a chance to briefly chat with two of the film's stars: Giuseppe Andrews (encoring as Deputy Winston) and Alexi Wasser, who plays the female lead. Check after the break for our exclusive chats, and check out CF2 for sure when it hits DVD early next year.

NEW YORK -- Reports of Rider Strong's death in the horror film "Cabin Fever" have been exaggerated. Strong's character, Paul, is alive and well and living in fear of his life in the sequel, "Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever".
Giuseppe Andrews returns as the oddball Deputy Winston, who dumped the ill Paul In a stream at the end of the 2003 original. In the Lionsgate sequel, the killer virus comes out of the woods and has a date at the high school prom.
