From a young age, Ángela Aguilar always knew that her purpose was to keep traditional música Mexicana alive. It’s a family affair, really: Her grandfather was ranchera hero Antonio Aguilar and her father is the renowned singer Pepe Aguilar.
The 20-year-old singer continues to invigorate traditional sounds as she releases her latest album, Bolero, on Friday. The nine-track project captures the singer giving new life to romantic classics, backed by castanets and the soothing plucks of guitar, on tracks like “Piensa En Mi,” “Somos Novios,” and “Luna Lunera.”

Maluma’s vision was crystal clear as he delved into creating his hit single “Según Quién.” The record began during a studio session with Edgar Barrera and Keityn in Turks and Caicos as he locked into album mode for Don Juan, which has been nominated for Best Latin Pop Album for this year’s Grammys. The Colombian musician was ready to return to his roots for a bit, but when the pair of producers played him the first guitar chords that would form the foundation of the single, he had...

Ana Bárbara is celebrating her three decade-long career with her “Bandidos” tour. On Tuesday, the singer announced that she’ll be heading on a tour across the United States, and adding stops in Mexico City and the Dominican Republic.
“This is such a miracle and the exact right time we needed to start the tour,” Bárbara said about heading on the road. “To see young people listening to music, it’s a privilege because it’s the new generations are what are going to support the career of an artist.

Pepe Aguilar knows a thing or two about continuing a legacy. The son of the greatest ranchera singer of all time, Antonio Aguilar, and a star of the golden age of Mexican cinema, Flor Silvestre, Pepe built a career by successfully carrying the heavy, storied history of the Aguilar last name and turning it into a now-growing dynasty.
With songs like “Por Mujeres Como Tú” and “Directo Al Corazón,” Pepe married the traditionalism of rancheras with the pop modernity of the mid-2000s to build a career in his own right.

Flor Silvestre, one of Mexico’s most popular singers who also starred in scores of films, died today at 90. Televisa’s Espectáculos said she died surrounded by her family — including her son, singer and actor Pepe Aguilar — at Rancho el Soyate, the Zacatecas ranch she once shared with her late husband, the singer and actor Antonio Aguilar.
Emerging as a radio star in her late teens, Silvestre inked a recording deal with Columbia Records in 1950 and soon began to score Spanish-language hits. That same year, she appeared in her first two movies — Primero soy Mexicano and Te besaré en la boca — and would go on to appear in nearly 70 more during the next four decades.
She moved to the Musart Records label in 1957 and continued to rack up hit songs — including one of her signature canciones “Mi destino fue quererte” (My Destiny Was to Love You) in 1964 — all while making...

From the director of Toy Story 3 comes Coco. Here's the first trailer...
Pixar has dropped the first trailer for its latest animated venture, Coco, the story of a boy who magically finds himself in the Land of the Dead after playing his movie idol's famous guitar. From the looks of the trailer, this movie looks to be a big homage to the days of classic Mexican ranchera films featuring such staples of the genre as Vicente Fernandez and Antonio Aguilar. The Dia de los Muertos backdrop, then, is the magical element that makes this movie a Pixar film.

Check out the trailer:
If anyone is curious, it does seem that there's something ghostly going on with the main character in the trailer. The word 'coco' in this context is a reference to a ghost in Hispanic folklore.

The first feature from director Iyari Werrta which clocks in at 105 minutes, is a fantasy laced noir throwback which, looks utterly stunning, has it's head in the clouds, but it's feet firmly plated on the earth. It has something to do with a "Divine comission", the search for the "black panther", and of course, an alcoholic detective. Clearly, Iyari is one to watch, and with all the talent coming out of Mexico right now (see De día o de noche for one), I'm wondering how much longer it will be before we need a correspondent there.
Translation:
After 50 years still looking for the death of Pedro Infante says it is still alive, and it hires "Nico", an alcoholic detective, who also has a divine commission.
The director further states:
The movie is called The Black Panther, is the story of a detective who is called Nico, who has two basic jobs,...
