The friendships on New Girl are just as important to the series as the romantic relationships. The show wouldn’t be what it is without the unique dynamics of the central friend group, both as a whole and within different pairings. Some friendships on the show are more expected, like Cece (Hannah Simone) and Jess (Zooey Deschanel), and are there from the beginning to the end of the series. Others kind of appear out of nowhere, like Nick (Jake Johnson) and Tran (Ralph Ahn), and yet it’s hard to imagine the show without them.
New Girl is a great reminder at how important it is to let comedies explore relationships both within and outside of the core friend group. It’s one thing to see how the characters get along as a whole, but pairing people off who may or may not have much in common initially is an...

Review: Jake Johnson is hilarious. After his breakout role as Nick Miller on Fox sitcom New Girl, Johnson has appeared alongside Tom Cruise in The Mummy, Chris Pratt in the Jurassic World franchise, and voicing Peter B. Parker in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Across the Spider-Verse. While Johnson has written several films, including Digging for Fire, Win It All, and Ride the Eagle, he makes his directorial debut with the new film Self Reliance.

Sunday’s SAG Awards ceremony will be a streaming event for the first time on the Netflix YouTube channel. One of the highlights each year is the special In Memoriam segment. It’s been a particularly rough year with over 100 deaths of prominent actors and actresses who were likely members of SAG/AFTRA. Show producers typically are able to include approximately 40-50 people in a tribute.
Among that group will certainly be Oscar winners Louise Fletcher, William Hurt and Irene Cara, plus nominees Angela Lansbury (a SAG life achievement recipient) and Melinda Dillon. Emmy champs Mary Alice, Kirstie Alley, Leslie Jordan, Ray Liotta, Stuart Margolin, Robert Morse and Barbara Walters.

Tonight, Fox aired the final two episodes of New Girl, the Elizabeth Meriwether comedy starring Zooey Deschanel, which ran for seven seasons and was among the network’s most notable series at 146 episodes and five Primetime Emmy noms. Arriving on air on September 20, 2011, New Girl followed Jess (Deschanel), an offbeat young woman who, after a bad breakup, moved into an apartment loft with three idiosyncratic, single men—Schmidt (Max Greenfield), Winston (Lamorne Morris) and future love interest Nick (Jake Johnson).

Whether it's an actor, producer, writer or director, it's always nice to sit down for an interview when your subject has good news. Last month, I pulled up a booth on the Clyde's set -- Yes, the booths are disconcertingly moveable -- with "New Girl" star Jake Johnson hot on the heels of the announcement of the 2015 Sundance Film Festival schedule, which includes Joe Swanberg's "Digging For Fire," an ensemble that represents Johnson's co-writing debut. Johnson also co-stars as part of a rather astounding cast including Anna Kendrick, Orlando Bloom, Brie Larson, Melanie Lynskey, Sam Rockwell, Sam Elliott and Chris Messina among many many more names. Johnson was excited about the Sundance announcement, as well as this summer's reunion with his "Safety Not Guaranteed" director Colin Trevorrow on the slightly larger scale "Jurassic World." And yes, Johnson is also excited about Season 4 of "New Girl." He has perhaps my...

A long-running New Girl gag is about to come full circle. The Fox comedy is once again bringing back Tran (Ralph Ahn), the elderly mute man that Nick (Jake Johnson) befriended in a park. And this time he'll be appearing alongside his (presumably non-taciturn) granddaughter. The Hollywood Reporter has learned that actress Greta Lee has booked the role and is set to appear in at least three episodes as a love interest for Nick. Lee will make her first appearance as Kai in the Thanksgiving episode, catching Nick's eye at the loft's annual holiday dinner. It's the latest
