In an era when much of sports broadcasting is dominated by hot takes, ESPN has decided to go with a class on-air announcing team for its NBA broadcast coverage.
The network said Monday that ever-steady play-by-play guy Mike Breen will be joined by Doris Burke and Doc Rivers on the broadcaster’s A-team for big games. The trio, along with reporter Lisa Salters, will call the NBA Finals, Eastern Conference Finals, NBA playoffs, and the Christmas Day and NBA Saturday Primetime on ABC series. The team will make its debut during ESPN’s opening week of NBA coverage in October.
As part of the changes, ESPN announced it has reached a multi-year deal with Rivers as well as a multi-year extension with Burke.
The arrangement will make the incomparable Burke the first woman to serve as a television analyst for a major men’s championship in the U.S.

Tenacious D are back with their first original new song in five years. The comedic duo of Jack Black and Kyle Gass have unveiled the tune “Video Games,” a country-leaning ode to gaming.
“It’s about growing up and leaving childish things behind… But then realizing that video games are more than just mindless toys,” stated Tenacious D in a press release. “In fact, they can be a true expression of huge ideas that belong in the pantheon of great works of art!
The duo continued, “It’s about time someone defended the honor and integrity of this bold new horizon. Leave it to the greatest band in the world…Tenacious D!!!”
The banjo-powered song clocks in at just over a minute long, and is accompanied by an animated video from the creative team of Oney Plays, featuring co-directors Adam Paloian (SpongeBob SquarePants) and Chris “Oney” O’Neill (YouTube’s...

National Basketball Association broadcasting legend Marv Albert signed off for the final time today, his last words a simple “good night” to his legion of fans.
Albert, whose 55-year-career was punctuated by his trademark “Yes!” call when someone made a crucial jump shot, finished his career with TNT, as the Milwaukee Bucks defeated the Atlanta Hawks in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals.
The 80-year-old Brooklyn native was the longtime voice of the New York Knicks, starting in 1963 and staying through the team’s championship years in 1969 and 1973. He also called New Jersey Nets basketball games, New York Rangers hockey, as well as football, horse racing, boxing, and tennis.
An NBA Hall of Famer, Albert called nine NBA Finals, seven Stanley Cup Finals, and eight Super Bowls. He was also a cohost and reporter for two World Series and called the Wimbledon Tennis Championship.

Spike Lee might possibly be the world’s most famous New York Knicks fan. But his love for the team has limits, apparently, and that limit was understandably the Knicks’ brutal, playoffs-ending loss to the Atlanta Hawks Wednesday night. Unfortunately, his reaction was caught on tape.
The round one match up between the Knicks and the Hawks ended in game 5 with a 103-89 victory for Atlanta. The Hawks will face the Philadelphia 76ers in round 2 of the 2021 NBA playoffs, and the Knicks will go home to figure out the plan for next season.
If you’re a Knicks fan, that had to hurt. So maybe that’s why three minutes before the game ended, when Atlanta was up 96-80 , Spike decided he’d had enough and left early rather than watch what turned out to be an inevitable, grueling defeat.
Alas, the quick retreat he beat was caught on camera...

Chris Webber has exited his longtime post at TNT ahead of next week’s NBA playoffs, an individual with knowledge of the situation told TheWrap.
The former NBA All-Star has been an analyst with the cable network since 2008, joining the Turner Sports team shortly after the conclusion of his professional basketball career.
According to the The New York Post, which was first to report Webber’s exit from TNT on Thursday, there were no contract negotiations between the in-game analyst and the cable network ahead of his exit. Per the Post’s source, it is believed TNT did not want Webber to return and neither did he.
Webber was not partnered with fellow TNT analyst Marv Albert for Thursday’s Philadelphia 76ers-Miami Heat game, which marked the last regular season broadcast of the season ahead of the playoffs on May 22. Instead, Reggie Miller took his place calling the game with Albert.

The legendary NBA announcer who famously cries “Yes!” when a basket is made won’t be doing any play-by-play when the league’s restarts its paused season. Marv Albert told the New York Post today that he has opted out of calling the games for TNT when they start at Walt Disney World in Orlando next month.
Albert, 79, Turner’s lead NBA announcer, told the paper that he was getting fired up to take part on-site but “had second thoughts” after coronavirus cases spiked in Florida. A spokesman told the Post that Albert might contribute some commentary remotely.
He has been doing NBA play-by-play for Turner Sports since the first Bush administration, having announced New York Knicks and Rangers games since 1963.

Everyone in “The Last Dance” has a Michael Story. Maybe it’s one they’ve told enough times at dinner parties or family gatherings that the timing has been workshopped to perfection. In some cases, the story might have drifted so far from the truth that it exists as its own self-perpetuating myth. Over the course of 10 episodes of “The Last Dance,” the ESPN documentary series examining the singular stardom of Michael Jordan through the lens of the legendary Chicago Bulls 1997-98 title run, the breadth of subjects and timelines almost makes the veracity of those stories irrelevant.
Directed by Jason Hehir, whose previous projects include multiple editions of ESPN’s long-running “30 for 30” series, “The Last Dance” is less an investigation of a sports dynasty’s last flames and more the chronicle of how improbable its survival always was. The goal seems to be to make a definitive...

The long-awaited publication of Ronan Farrow’s book “Catch and Kill: Lies, Spies, and a Conspiracy to Protect Predators” has unleashed a furor within NBC News.
“Catch and Kill,” set for release Oct. 15, portrays NBC News and its leaders as compromised while Farrow pursued the story of sexual assault allegations against Harvey Weinstein — because of the division’s own history of misconduct claims and settlements.
The accusations against now-disgraced former “Today” anchor Matt Lauer were so potent that Weinstein sought to use them as leverage to pressure NBC News to kill Farrow’s investigation of him, according to “Catch and Kill.”
NBC News has vehemently denied many of Farrow’s assertions. The reporter parted ways with NBC News over the Weinstein story in mid-August 2017, when he relocated his reporting to The New Yorker, which published his first Weinstein exposé on Oct. 10, 2017.

Some thoughts on tonight's excellent black-ish coming up just as soon as I explain Peabo Bryson to you... The '80s and '90s gave the concept of Very Special Episodes a bad name, because they tended to involve superficial sitcoms clumsily tackling important issues — Arnold Jackson avoids being molested by the man at the bike shop! Jesse Spano gets hooked on caffeine pills! — because it seemed like the right thing to do, and not because anyone involved was particularly adept at it. Other sitcoms of the period like Taxi, Cheers, and Frasier would turn serious so frequently, and so deftly, that the concept of A Very Special Episode seemed besides the point; an episode where Sam talked about his drinking problem was just another episode of Cheers. "Hope" was in many ways A Very Special black-ish, with the entire Johnson family gathered in the living room to talk about...

Based on whichever review of Amy Schumer's new movie "Trainwreck" you read, you learned it's either an incisive critique of postfeminism or a conventional movie merely dressed as a progressive one. You may have heard (from us) it's an ingenious star vehicle that forces director Judd Apatow to break outside his comfort zone and tell someone else's story, a feat he often does well. But you may have also heard "Trainwreck" is another overlong, under-focused Apatow drama masked with raunch. In fact, the most definite thing I can say about the quality of "Trainwreck" is you've probably heard a lot about it. For me, the problem is it's all correct. "Trainwreck" has stuck with me like no other movie this year because its levels of success and failure spike and plummet without warning. It is the strongest, weakest movie of the summer. There are glorious moments of well-acted comic mayhem,...

We have plenty of movie coverage here at HitFix — including Drew's rave review of this film from SXSW — but as happens when I see a film relatively early in its run, and particularly one like "Trainwreck" with a fair amount of crossover with what I cover in TV, I like to offer up a few of my thoughts, as well as a place for people who have seen the film to start discussing it. Again, this review is designed for people who've already seen "Trainwreck," and thus will have plenty of spoilers, coming up just as soon as we split the check... Amy Schumer is on an incredible roll right now. She just finished perhaps the strongest season to date of "Inside Amy Schumer" — and the "12 Angry Men" spoof is an early contender for 2015's best episode of television — and "Trainwreck" is a terrific movie introduction for her as both actress and writer.

Who’ll Stop the Train?: Apatow Matures with Schumer’s Impressive Skills
The most inappropriate element of Judd Apatow’s latest film Trainwreck is its title, which promises to be a bawdy, crass marathon of blatant innuendo with a high potential for poor taste, if judging solely by its marketing publicity and reputation of its director and star/writer, comedian Amy Schumer. What a surprise to find not only a rather mature but even sensible depiction of generally undiscussed difficulties concerning relationships. Schumer shines in her own generously concocted marinade, deftly spinning an excellent characterization for herself while managing a surprising amount of appealing supporting characters. With a running time just falling over the two hour mark, you’re bound to find a few instances worthy of trimming, but Schumer’s pleasurable hurricane hits almost all its marks, a thankful reprieve from the usual glut of testosterone fueled R rated adult studio comedies.

The tagline for Trainwreck claims “We all know one,” but Amy Schumer’s boisterous leading debut succeeds not because we see our “trainwreck” friends in her performance. Whether you’ll admit it or not, we instead see ourselves in the shoes of Amy, because we’ve All experienced that period where no f#*ks are to be given. You’re damn right to assume “we all know one” – we all own mirrors. But it’s Ok to be a trainwreck, and that’s the journey that this floozy-on-steriods is here to teach us.

When the Garden Was Eden

USA, 2014
It was Game 5 of the 1970 NBA finals. A tight series between the Los Angeles Lakers and New York Knicks might have turned when Knicks star Willis Reed went down with a leg injury. Reed—the captain of the team, the league Mvp, and the toughest bastard in basketball—missed the rest of the game (a Knicks win), as well as the next won (which the Lakers took), and he was officially listed as unlikely to play in the seventh and deciding game of the series.
It wasn’t Reed’s style to give in so easily, however. During warmups, he hobbled onto the court at Madison Square Garden, and the crowd went bananas. The call from ABC announcer Marv Albert (a lifelong Knicks fan) is iconic: “Here comes Willis!”
Reed scored the first two baskets of the game as he...

Quick, behind you! Will and Jaden Smith spent some quality time together at a Heat vs. Bulls basketball game on Wednesday, May 15 -- but unbeknownst to them both, they had a chipper reporter joining in on their bonding time. In a hilarious moment during the game, sports reporter Craig Sager, clad in a loud pink plaid suit, leaned toward the pair and waved for cameras as they focused on the father-and-son duo just as sportscaster Marv Albert introduced the pair. Just one day before, the Smith men [...]...

LeBron James' playoff woes has become as integral a part of basketball as dribbling or Marv Albert. Stop us if you've heard this one:
A man asks LeBron James for change for a parking meter. LeBron gives the man 75 cents and walks away. The man shouts, "Hey, LeBron! I need a dollar!" LeBron replies "sorry, man, I don't have a fourth quarter."
Boom. But we can't even make a layup so who cares what we say. However, when Los Angeles Laker and all-time great Magic Johnson starts ripping you? That's gotta hurt.

We're back! Round 7 was one of the best nights yet! For this week (Round 8) we thought we'd do something a little different. While "Krull" and "Return to Oz" were hits, they were both really long, right? Right. So, Tuesday (June 7th!) we're presenting 4 bite-sized morsels of weirdness for you to cram into your brain.
Heavy Metal Parking Lot (1986)
Circulating only as a bootleg for many years, this is a true American time capsule. Thirty minutes of solid gold from the parking lot of a Judas Priest concert at the USAir Arena in Maryland. Witness the majesty of cool t-shirts, sing-alongs, beer, dope, bad hair, good hair, cars, swear-words, groupies, and more as we present this once lost gem.
This girl wants to party with you: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yyN-OAHC4TY

When you get an opportunity to talk to a legendary sports broadcaster like Marv Albert, inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame, of course you're going to want his take on the LeBron James television "spectacle" surrounding James's 'Decision' to leave the Cleveland Cavaliers to play for the Miami Heat.
David Letterman, in fact, decided he wasn't going to let Albert leave the 'Late Show' (Weeknights, 11:35Pm on CBS) until he got his opinion on the poorly-received publicity stunt. Furthermore, he told Albert, "You're not leaving until you say I'm right about this."
Albert tried to make the comparison to when Letterman left NBC to shift to CBS after the first "Late Night War," but Letterman was having none of that. "They didn't want me there," he said. "I was not wanted at NBC." That's very different from James and Cleveland, where he'd become a beloved sports figure.

The best thing to watch tonight isn't on TV and is best viewed if you live in either North or Central America. I am speaking, of course, of the first full lunar eclipse on the night of the Winter Solstice since 1638. For me (and probably most of you) this is just a cool astrological event to watch, but I'm sure it's an extra super big deal for the pagans though I'm not sure how they celebrate. Orgies? Virgin sacrifices? Someone let me know so I can send the appropriate e-card. I'm already making plans that involve hot chocolate, a campfire, those little hand warmer packets and as many pairs of socks as I can fit into my boots. Unfortunately, the eclipse isn't scheduled to start until the wee hours of the morning though, so you'll still have to suffer though tonight's prime time schedule before heading out to watch. Here's...

Besides the blatant lie portraying the New Jersey Nets playing in front of a sell-out crowd, Just Wright ends up being a nice little movie. What is billed as yet another romantic comedy, the 111 minute feature was relatively easy to get through. There were times it did feel tedious. Much like some aspects of physical therapy one must go through to reach the end result. Hopefully, all the hard-work and trivial tasks payoff.

Maybe I.ve been watching too much of the NBA playoffs. Or possibly the Manhattan setting for this year.s 24 put me in a New York state of mind. But as I watched Jack Bauer work his way through his toolbox from hell before he quite literally extracted evidence from the Russian agent and sniper Pavel, I was caught between two reactions. Questioning Greatness with Adam Rifkin:
Earth’S Premiere Storyteller
We (Bob Rose, me, I?) at the Opinion In A Haystack Department are proud to announce that I (we?) were (was?) given the chance to pick the brain bucket of Hollywood’s supreme philosopher and film-creationist, Sir Adam Rifkin (facebook, twitter, myspace.) He’s the filmmaker responsible for Detroit Rock City, The Chase, The Dark Backward, and, more recently, the award winning Look. I was able to sit down with Mr. Rifkin, in front of our respective computers, and interview him, via email, about a plethora of assorted, varied, diverse, sundry, indiscriminate, and heavily kaleidoscopic ideas.
I originally sent Mr. Rifkin over 3,000 questions, most of which involved very uncomfortable queries about his family lineage, sexual fears, and Laserdisc-replica collection. He answered all of them in full detail, thus passing the interview-qualification-process, which allowed me to send him the 16 questions you will find below.

With his return as the host of "The Tonight Show" just a few short weeks away, Jay Leno's final outing on "The Jay Leno Show" was something of a subdued affair. The tone was lighthearted and guests were agreeable, but Leno's final prime-time hosting gig lacked the same emotional punch that outgoing "Tonight Show" host Conan O'Brien enjoyed in his closing moments on the air.

Mike Scully, The Simpsons’ show runner from seasons nine through twelve, said something in 2007 that has made me regret the show’s consistent decline in quality even more.
“Lower your quality standards. Once you’ve done that you can go on forever.”
That became the formula for propelling The Simpsons through countless seasons that many devoted fans might say should never have happened. So, here we are at season twenty. If you’ve been avidly tracking Simpsons season releases you’ll know this one was releases out of order, as the next should have been season 13. So what gives? The twentieth anniversary. Did you watch the Morgan Spurlock-led special? Good, because it’s not on this set. No, my dear readers, what we have here is a set supposedly released to celebrate the event plastered on its cover, but which fails to do so with any material on the actual discs.

NBC's upcoming show "The Marriage Ref" has lined up a roster of celebrity panelists for its initial run -- and NBC is hoping to give the show a boost by previewing it at the tail end of the Winter Olympics.
The Jerry Seinfeld-produced series, a comedy-reality hybrid with the trappings of a sports show -- including announcer Marv Albert -- will get a half-hour preview on Sunday, Feb. 28, following the closing ceremony of the Winter Olympics. It will move to its regular home at 8 p.m. Et Sundays starting March 14.
The show will take squabbles between married couples -- the kind of thing you'd carp about over dinner with friends, Seinfeld told reporters Sunday (Jan. 10) at NBC's press tour sessions -- and settle them once and for all via the Marriage Ref, comedian Tom Papa. A panel of celebrities will also watch the taped arguments and try to sway Papa's decision.

One of the stranger stories to come out of last week's news cycle was the tale surrounding an episode of "Jimmy Kimmel Live," which featured guest appearances by both rapper 50 Cent and legendary basketball play-by-play man Marv Albert. There was a report last week that Albert had a run-in with 50's entourage, who didn't recognize the hoops announcer but did think he was there to hassle the rapper. A tussle ensued, and a handful of obscenities and punches were thrown from both directions.
It's a pretty crazy story, except according to Albert, it never happened. The announcer told the Associated Press that all reports about the scuffle were false. Albert said he never came even vaguely close to 50 Cent or his crew the entire time he was at "Jimmy Kimmel Live." "I couldn't even tell you what the guy looked like or the security guard looked like," Albert told the...

I thought that Cheech and Chong and Ann Coulter's gloves-off, no holds barred showdown/friendly exchange of ideas was the weirdest match up of all time. I officially stand corrected.
Rapper 50 Cent's posse and sportcaster Marv Albert got into a little backstage tussle on the set of Jimmy Kimmel Live and no one seems to know exactly why. If only we had someone at the scene who could describe what was happened "blow by blow" and then utter some kind of high energy word or phrase when something really exciting happens.
Apparently, a security guard just announced that Marv was walking down the hall the same time that 50 Cent and his crowd and the two threw down. Whatever the cause, it's unfortunate that it happened but more unfortunate for 50 Cent. If Marv Albert can walk away from your security entourage, maybe you need to consider some corporate restructuring.

In perhaps one of the oddest moments of the week, 50 Cent's crew got tangled up with longtime basketball announcer Marv Albert backstage at "Jimmy Kimmel Live" on Wednesday (November 18). 50 and Marv both appeared on the show that night, and according to the Los Angeles Times, Albert received a chilly reception from 50's entourage when he arrived at the studio. Apparently, they didn't recognize the venerable voice of the NBA, and they were under the impression he was trying to impose on 50's interview. So when the broadcaster entered the building, what went down? Punches were thrown, obscenities were spat out and things got quite hostile.
Although the details remain unclear, the 68-year-old Albert was in the middle of it all. Even when a Kimmel staffer identified Albert, 50's entourage remained unswayed. Somehow, Albert got out of there unscathed, remarking, "Did you see that? I thought they were kidding,...

Of all the sports that could possibly be made into video games, none of them are as simple as basketball. The rules are pretty straightforward, the skills necessary are not particularly complicated and the presentation is pretty basic. Enter "NBA Live 10," the latest entry into the venerable EA Sports franchise. It's just five guys, a ball and a hoop, right? Maybe not.
The Basics
Suit up with any one of the National Basketball Association's 30 teams to play through exhibition games, playoff tilts and multi-season dynasties.

Ultra-smooth Flow
So much of professional basketball is about the speed and pace of the game, especially when working with teams like the Suns and Cavaliers who rely so heavily on the transition game. At the close of David Letterman's stunning on-air disclosure Thursday, the host seemed set to put the whole sordid affair behind him. After a 10-minute explanation of an extortion plot intended to expose his sexual liaisons with female staffers, he concluded, "I don't plan to say much more about this on this particular topic."
But if Letterman thinks he's had the last word, rest assured this controversy is far from over.
Sure, the immediate aftermath has gone well for him. Robert Joe Halderman has been indicted and so-called media experts are in consensus that the late-night host is going to be fine.
But Letterman may find the devil in the details, of which he divulged precious little in coming clean. What will truly determine just how ugly this will get for him is the yet-to-emerge particulars of his sexual exploits.
