I must have at least 7 home video releases of John Sturges’ classic, starting from VHS, but they’ve come up with a good reason to return: a 4K transfer with color and contrast grading that to me better represents the movie. The thrilling, not-too-violent escapades of Steve McQueen, Richard Attenborough, James Garner, David McCallum, James Coburn, Charles Bronson & James Donald are no longer timed so that everything looks like a washed-out high noon: both the 4th of July and much of the mad-dash escape scramble are meant to take place near the crack of dawn. In this case ‘Much darker’ is much richer; faces don’t get blown out. And I do see more detail in the enhanced image. So here we go again, happily.

William Holden commands a newly formed commando group in “The Devil’s Brigade,” available by Kino Lorber on Blu-ray. On the heels of the successful “The Dirty Dozen” from the previous year, “The Devil’s Brigade” is based on the 1966 book by Robert H. Adleman and Colonel George Walton. It chronicles the true events of the 1st Special Service, a joint American and Canadian commando unit assigned to the United States Fifth Army. Inspired by true events, the movie follows the standard tropes of this type of action adventure men- at -war movie. A rag-tag group of soldiers are brought together for a mission, they initially mistrust each other, get into a fight, train together, get into another fight this time working together against another group, graduate from their training and then deploy on their mission to fight the enemy.

Images from this picture were burned into our Boomer childhood brains … we actually sat still for almost three hours to watch it. John Sturges’ epic show is like a fine-tuned watch — its unbreakable story is populated by ideal characters that become instant heroes, just for acting like normal men that want free of confinement. It’s really about freedom — after two hours in the Pow compound, the fugitives set loose in the wide, green beauty of Germany might as well be escaping into a wonderland of light and space. In its own way this show made our parents’ wartime experience come alive — it’s The picture to interest kids in events of the past.

Kurt Vonnegut’s quirky sci-fi novels didn’t always adapt well to film, but George Roy Hill’s 1972 effort is a faithful winner. The filmmaking craft used to ‘unstick’ Billy Pilgrim in time is nothing short of brilliant, highlighting the camera talent of Miroslav Ondricek and the editing skill of Dede Allen. The book even has a built-in sex angle that the film doesn’t shy away from — providing our first encounter with Valerie Perrine as a starlet kidnapped by aliens curious about human mating habits. The somber, sometimes spiritually-defeatist tone of the show represents the book well; it ought to be better known.

Prince Harry is by far one of our favorite royals. From his dashing good looks to his kind heart and willingness to help others, it isn't hard to tell why. While the 32-year-old has been in the spotlight for his entire life, there is one key fact we didn't know about him: his real name isn't Harry. Turns out, his birth name is Henry (full name Henry Charles Albert David Mountbatten-Windsor), a popular English name for kings. The word itself is loosely translated to mean "home ruler" (even though he's fifth in line for the throne). The fact that he uses a nickname is also pretty coincidental seeing that his girlfriend, Meghan Markle, also doesn't go by her birth name.

Ke$ha is definitely known for being a little out-of-the-box when it comes to her style, music, and personality, but her new jewelry line still managed to shock us.
Kesha Rose, 26, has created a self-titled jewelry line that offers rings, necklaces, earrings and more at affordable prices. Tell us what you think of this funky new line!
Kesha Penis Jewelry — Inspiration Behind Her New Line
Ke$ha has created a jewelry line in collaboration with Charles Albert, called “Kesha Rose”. In an attempt to maintain humor in everything she does in her life, the singer decided to create an entire jewelry line featuring pieces from the human anatomy and nature. The most interesting piece for us would have to be the earrings and rings that are, simply, penises.
The “TiK ToK” singer dished to Fashionista about the inspiration behind the phalluses.
I mean, come on. I love boys and I love penises.

If you've ever had the desire to rock a gold penis around your neck, from your ears, around your wrist, or on your finger ... sorry, but it looks like you'll have to keep waiting. You missed your chance to own a piece of Ke$ha's new jewelry line, Kesha Rose by Charles Albert.
Though the collection launched just last week, most of the pieces have sold out -- and all of the phallic-themed pieces were the first to go!
The collection of bracelets, earrings, necklaces, knuckle rings, and regular rings is handcrafted in Alchemia 'zero karat gold,' and features shapes such as penises, metal-cast human teeth, skulls, lightning bolts, and more. The pieces range in price from $15 to $600.
"I have been wearing Charles Albert for a few years now and I'm obsessed with their jewelry. It's so fun, and massive, and makes such a wild statement. There will be something for everyone!

No surprise -- Ke$ha has balls! The unconventional singer's new jewelry collaboration with Charles Albert has yielded some rather interesting designs. When Ke$ha isn't bathing herself in baby oil and glitter, the 26-year-old pop star actually cleans up pretty nicely.
In the past she's described her look as "a cross between Keith Richards and a hobo ... a really ridiculously hot hobo," but in recent weeks it seems like the singer has been embracing a sexier and more natural side.
We almost missed it, but last week the "Tik Tok" singer uploaded some photos to her Instagram account that showcase her new jewelry line, which is a collaboration with noted designer Charles Albert.
In one shot, Ke$ha sports some of the shortest short shorts we've ever seen and flashes some skin as her breast peaks out of her shirt. The glitter-loving star looks pretty sexy in the shot, but we've found that we're pretty impressed every time it looks like she simply remembered to shower.

We return with the latest edition of the Indie Spotlight, highlighting recent independent horror news sent our way. Today’s feature includes details on graphic novel Graveyard of Empires, the Season 2 premiere of Scott Ian’s Blood and Guts, Cowboys Vs. Vampires distribution news, and much more:
Graveyard of Empires Graphic Novel: “From Alexander the Great’s Macedonian army to Genghis Khan’s Mongol horde to the British Imperial machine of the nineteenth to the Soviet Union to the twenty-first century United States of America, no occupying force has ever been able to control Afghanistan — the very reason it’s known as the Graveyard of Empires. Mark Sable and Paul Azaceta drew upon that history in their Image Comics series Graveyard Of Empires, set in present-day Afghanistan, where American troops are caught in a seemingly unending conflict with the Taliban. That is, until a new enemy enters the field: the undead.

Anthologies within our favorite genre are definitely trending upward, with V/H/S, The Abcs Of Death and other such fare making waves the past couple of years. Well, now you can add another film to the list of those joining the party. That would be Sinister Visions, a film that features five different stories, from succubi, zombies, demons, serial killers, and a segment entitled “Genital Genocide.” You’re decision one way or the other has been made by that segment title alone, I suspect. The project is preparing for screenings abroad over the summer and a DVD around these parts in the fall. Check it out.

While earthquake relief in Haiti was the reason for and inspiration behind "Hope for Haiti Now: A Global Benefit for Earthquake Relief," there's no question that it featured some amazing, one-of-a-kind musical performances.
The songs chosen by most of the artists had a thematic connection to the occasion, and the soaring lyrics delivered by the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Mary J. Blige and Justin Timberlake underlined the hope for the country that's coming from around the world. The songs' unplugged, often gentle renditions underscored the seriousness of the situation.
George Clooney helped organize the event, and his hope is that the songs carry the event beyond the evening and into the following weeks, months and years.
