Gibbs' return in NCIS' 1000th episode is demanded by a deep-cut reference to the show's history Per long-time cast member, Sean Murray, the special episode will reference the pilot case and feature callbacks to previous iconic moments. Although Gibbs' comeback to the main NCIS show is currently uncertain, he is already confirmed to return for NCIS: Origins.
A deep-cut Easter egg for NCIS' upcoming 1000th episode effectively demands Mark Harmon to reprise his role as Leroy Jethro Gibbs. Losing characters isn't an alien concept for long-running shows on TV. Almost every procedural has gone through its fair share of casting reshuffles, including NCIS. Just two years after it premiered in 2003, the series bid goodbye to its first original player, when Sasha Alexander decided to exit the series as Caitlin Todd. CBS used it to set up a compelling send-off, which saw the former Secret Service member getting murdered by Ari Haswari — Ziva David's brother.

NCIS' 1000th episode will be full of Easter eggs and callbacks to the show's most memorable moments, dating back to the pilot episode. Director Leon Vance will take center stage in the milestone episode, with familiar faces from the agency helping him solve a mystery. While Gibbs will unlikely be involved in the 1000th episode, fans can still expect a case-per-week format to keep them engaged.
Sean Murray teases Easter eggs that go back to the show's premiere in NCIS' 1000th episode. Playing Timothy McGee, the actor is the longest-serving cast member in the CBS police procedural. Because of this, he has been in the majority of groundbreaking NCIS episodes over the years, so celebrating the franchise's upcoming milestone will be very special. Not much has been revealed about the outing thus far, but it has been confirmed that NCIS' overall 1000th episode will put Director Leon Vance at the center of its storytelling.

Austin Stowell will play the young Leroy Jethro Gibbs in NCIS: Origins.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, it's been revealed who will play the younger Gibbs in the upcoming NCIS prequel series. Austin Stowell has been tapped to play the role of Gibbs, and his real-life age, 39, coincides with the prequel beginning about 12 years before the start of Mark Harmon's run playing the character in 2003, when he was 51. Harmon will be providing the voice of the older Gibbs as the show's narrator, and the actor is also serving as a producer on the series.

Leroy Jethro Gibbs is no longer NCIS's main character. Mark Harmon now produces NCIS, and he hasn't been seen onscreen since 2021. There's a very slim chance that Mark Harmon could return as Leroy Jethro Gibbs.
NCIS (Naval Criminal Investigative Service) wouldn't be the massively successful procedural drama it is today without Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon). For most of the show's 21-season and 20-year run, the stern but caring Gibbs led his investigators on the field, in their headquarters, and even in their personal lives. As the show went on, more of Gibbs' past and what his potential life after the armed services could be were revealed. Gibbs was so integral to NCIS's identity and its overarching story that it was unthinkable for him to just leave. But then he did just that four episodes into Season 19.

NCIS season 21 pays tribute to Ducky Mallard and confirms the show's best team lineup through a secret vault discovery. Despite character departures and reshuffles, NCIS thrives and becomes CBS' longest-running scripted series, maintaining its popularity. The ensemble featuring Gibbs, Dinozzo, McGee, Palmer, Ziva, Abby, Vance, and Ducky is suggested as NCIS' best team lineup.
NCIS season 21's Ducky Mallard tribute also secretly confirms the show's best team iteration. Being on the air for more than two decades, the police procedural is not new to cast reshuffles. It has experienced all kinds of character departures — from permanent ones brought by a tragedy, such as the assassination of Sasha Alexander's Caitlin Todd to more open-ended ones like Mark Harmon's Leroy Jethro Gibbs' retirement in Alaska. When it premiered in 2003, NCIS had five original characters: Gibbs, Cait, Michael Weatherly's Tony Dinozzo, Pauley Perrette's Abby Sciuto, and David McCallum's Ducky.

Mark Harmon didn't make an appearance in the recent NCIS episode honoring David McCallum, and this has been addressed by the show's executive producers.
Following the passing of David McCallum, the actor's character, Dr. Donald "Ducky" Mallard, was given a send-off in the episode that aired on Monday, Feb. 19. While it wasn't announced that Mark Harmon would appear as Gibbs in the episode, some fans thought a surprise appearance might happen with the character showing up to honor Ducky. Per TVLine, EP and co-showrunner Steven D. Warning! Spoilers ahead for NCIS season 21, episode 2.
No Mark Harmon in Ducky tribute ep, but Gibbs's role is addressed in an emotional flashback sequence. Ducky goes from Me to a historian, ending the era as the last original NCIS character. Despite Harmon's absence, NCIS pays tribute to Ducky's legacy with an emotional final storyline and the return of Michael Weatherly's Dinozzo.
The NCIS season 21 Ducky Mallard tribute episode didn't feature Mark Harmon, but Leroy Jethro Gibbs did have an involvement. David McCallum played the original medical examiner in the long-running procedural. Known for having a wealth of knowledge on top of his excellent abilities as NCIS' established Me. Over time, however, Ducky's role in the show was decreased in order to cater to McCallum's age and personal request. He wanted to spend more time with his family, so NCIS gave him an equally important but less taxing role as the organization's historian.

Sasha Alexander's character Kate Todd left NCIS after only two seasons due to the grueling schedule and commitment required by the show. Many actors have left NCIS over the years, though many have returned for special appearances, including Sasha Alexander. Sasha Alexander's most well-known role after NCIS is as Maura Isles in Rizzoli & Isles, where she starred alongside Angie Harmon.
As of Season 20 of NCIS, only one character — Dr. Donald "Ducky" Mallard (David McCallum) — remains from the procedural’s original cast. However, McCallum has had a minimal role since Season 19, and another original cast member, Mark Harmon, left the show that season. Harmon's exit wasn't the first to shake up the series, though; Sasha Alexander departed NCIS after only 49 episodes as Special Agent Caitlin "Kate" Todd.
As one of the longest-running television shows of all time, it makes sense that NCIS has seen its share of cast turnover.

Plot: A gritty, emotional tale about healing familial wounds through re-connection. After a drastic incident in her life, a young woman embarks on an impromptu road trip with her estranged father. En-route to their destination of Santa Fe, New Mexico, the two are forced to confront the issues of their past that have led to their frail relationship, while encountering an eccentric array of characters along the way, in order to bring them closer together again.
Review: Road trips and redemption tales have long been staples of filmmaking, big and small. Stories of connection between estranged family members, struggles with addiction, and stark looks at the landscape of rural America are nothing new, but that does not mean they are not ripe for new stories. Bleeding Love is a film rooted in the familiar tropes of decades worth of movies and yet it still manages to bring something unique to the mix.

NCIS season 21 will be the first year without any original cast members, marking a major transition for the long-running show. The possibility of original cast members returning in some capacity still remains open for future seasons, as some characters' storylines are left unresolved. Cote de Pablo's character, Ziva David, was written back into NCIS after 6 years, which initially received reservation from fans but was ultimately met with praise. Ziva's portrayal as a strong Israeli woman had a major cultural impact and brought attention to fair representation in media, which influenced de Pablo's decision to leave when her character's direction no longer served her impact. Producers convinced de Pablo to return for NCIS season 17, allowing for a more satisfying closure to Ziva's story and her pursuit of reuniting with Tony and their daughter.

Rumors began to swirl years back that Aniston had her eye on the role of Caitlin Todd.
Recent reports suggest that Aniston was keen to step into the shoes of Caitlin Todd while she was winding down her role on Friends.
However, NCIS top brass offer conflicting viewpoints on whether the famed Friends star was genuinely considering a transition to crime procedural drama.

NCIS was initially created with Harrison Ford in mind to play the role of Gibbs, but the idea didn't go beyond Ford being a placeholder. Mark Harmon was ultimately cast as Gibbs after the show's creators saw his portrayal of a Secret Service agent in The West Wing. It's better that Harrison Ford wasn't cast as Gibbs in NCIS because Harmon's portrayal has become synonymous with the character and he has been able to commit to the role for almost two decades.
NCIS' original plans for Leroy Jethro Gibbs would have significantly changed the beloved police procedural. CBS' longest-running police procedural has just celebrated its 20 years on the air, making it one of the longest-running scripted American primetime television series, only behind NBC's Law & Order: Svu and Law & Order. Jennifer Aniston was considered for a significant role on NCIS early on, but it's unclear which character it was. The producing and network team liked Robyn Lively for the role but ended up choosing Sasha Alexander instead. There is speculation that Jennifer Aniston was available at the time and her name was discussed, but it's unclear if an offer was ever made.
One actor from Friends was considered for a big role on NCIS. A role on a long-running and popular crime procedural is often thought of as a dream job in television, with pop culture often making jokes or storylines out of the stability that comes with the procedural format. Because of this, as a general rule, procedurals like NCIS generally tend to avoid casting the big stars in the main cast. The opposite is often true, in that procedurals make major stars out of actors who were previously not as well-known.

Although NCIS was well-liked from the get-go, not even an elite investigation could have foreseen the show becoming a hit that would span decades and launch a franchise.
It began in spring 2003 as a backdoor pilot for CBS’ sturdy military-law procedural Jag. Co-created by Jag mastermind Donald P. Bellisario (Magnum, P.I., Quantum Leap) and Don McGill (Numbers, CSI), NCIS follows special agents from D.C.’s Naval Criminal Investigative Service, led by Mark Harmon as Leroy Jethro Gibbs. The show’s initial core cast included Michael Weatherly (Tony Dinozzo), Sasha Alexander (Caitlin Todd), Pauley Perrette (Abby Sciuto) and David McCallum (Ducky Mallard). Twenty years later, the series continues to thrive, as it stands as CBS’ No. 1 broadcast drama for five straight seasons and has launched four spinoffs, with the first international entry, NCIS: Sydney, debuting this fall on the network.

Kate's early death in NCIS had a lasting impact on the show, spanning from season 2 to the upcoming season 21. Sasha Alexander wanted a lighter workload, so the show's creator, Donald P. Bellisario, decided to kill off her character to increase the stakes. The decision to kill Kate was a shocker and came out of nowhere, surprising both the audience and the cast.
There's a reason that Kate (Sasha Alexander) was killed off so early in NCIS history. After spinning off of Jag in 2003, NCIS has gone on to become a runaway hit of its own. The military procedural has spawned several successful spinoffs, including NCIS: Los Angeles, New Orleans, Hawai'i, and Sydney, and that resounding success can be traced back to the show's early charismatic cast. While many of those original leads went on to enjoy long runs with the show, Kate was shot and killed in the shocking season 2 finale.

Abby Sciuto left NCIS due to a feud with Mark Harmon, feeling she couldn't work with him anymore. Ziva David left NCIS because her character wasn't written well anymore, and Cote de Pablo wanted better scripts. Tony Dinozzo left NCIS because he was burned out and wanted a new challenge, ultimately starring in his own show, Bull.
NCIS has had a long run, but why did Abby leave NCIS along with a slew of other fan-favorite characters? As one of the longest-running shows on television, NCIS has seen plenty of turnover in its team of special agents. Though some fan favorites make an appearance on NCIS from time to time, other exits have been much more permanent. While most departures from the show were made on a high note, some farewells were less than amicable. Beginning in 2003, NCIS has become a staple in the CBS line-up.

NCIS might not be returning for its 21st season with new episodes this fall, but CBS is going to be putting on quite the celebration for the long-running procedural drama’s 20th anniversary. It was on September 23, 2003 that NCIS first premiered, and 459 episodes later (and now four other series in the franchise), CBS has declared Monday, September 25 “NCIS Day.” (The series moved from Tuesdays to Mondays with Season 19.) NCIS has been a top 20 series for 18 of its 20 seasons and TV’s top broadcast drama for the last five consecutive seasons (as well as 13 of the last 14). Also of note: Combining all the series, the franchise will reach a milestone 1,000th episode during NCIS Season 21. The celebration includes a mini marathon on CBS (and streaming on Paramount+) of the series premiere, which introduced Kate (Sasha Alexander) to Gibbs (Mark Harmon), Tony (Michael Weatherly), and Ducky (David McCallum) and NCIS; Season 2’s “Swak,...

On Monday, Sept. 25, CBS is officially celebrating “NCIS Day” — exactly 20 years (…plus two days) after the Jag spinoff made its broadcast debut. The well-watched NCIS mothership has aired 459 episodes to date, and with all offshoots (including NCIS: Sydney) combined, the franchise will reach a milestone 1,000th episode (!) during NCIS’ 21st season (premiere date Tbd). NCIS has graced our television screens for the last 20 years. The show first premiered in 2003, and it followed Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs as he and his team, Naval Criminal Investigative Services, solved high-profile crimes connected to the Navy or Marines. Now, 20 years later, where is the season 1 cast today?

Mark Harmon was the NCIS lead, playing Leroy Jethro Gibbs. Harmon worked his way up the ranks on the show’s back end, eventually becoming its executive producer in 2008, just five years after it started. Harmon left the show, though, during its 19th season in 2021.
These days, nobody is aware of Harmon’s next move except him. The Hollywood Reporter revealed that he signed with a new production agency, so it seems that he’s still interested in acting. But he has racked up a $120 million...

Bel Powley stars in the National Geographic series “A Small Light” as Miep Gies, the woman who helped hide Otto Frank and his family during WWII. During a reception for the show Thursday at the San Vicente Bungalows in West Hollywood, the actor recalled being on set when she first heard about Kanye West’s antisemitic comments in October 2022.
“We were filming the show when all of the Kanye stuff was happening,” Powley told me. “I was obviously living in the world of the show, which has a lot of Nazi rhetoric because we’re making a show about the Nazi occupation in 1942, but then suddenly seeing and hearing that same rhetoric spoken now by a world-famous celebrity with huge influence was so freaky and unsettling and saddening.”

David McCallum, who plays Donald "Ducky" Mallard, is one of the longest-standing members of the NCIS cast — but in recent seasons he has hardly appeared on the show. The original chief medical examiner for NCIS was introduced back in 2003 for the procedural drama’s pilot, “Yankee White.” Since 2018, Ducky, played by David McCallum, has appeared in fewer episodes, leading viewers to wonder whether he will be the next main character to leave. The NCIS Ducky character is well known for having a number of quirks, such as his colorful collection of bow ties and penchant for speaking to the dead while performing autopsies.
As the polite and eccentric scientist’s backstory unfolds it's clear there's more than meets the eye when it comes to the David McCallum character. Ducky's arc in season 6, episode 16, “Broken Bird,” explores his time working for the Royal Army Medical Corps in the 1980s, inadvertent association with a torturous CIA interrogator,...

Rizzoli and Isles haven't solved a new case on TV in nearly six years.
While Tess Gerritsen continues to write new novels on the beloved duo, we've been left with a significant gap in our lives as their lives go on without us bearing witness on-screen.
The iconic duo of Angie Harmon and Sasha Alexander were TV staples for over 100 episodes, but what are they (and the rest of the cast) doing now?
In Memorium: Lee Thompson Young -- Detective Barry Frost
Lee Thompson Young, who played Detective Frost (one of Jane Rizzoli's closest co-workers), tragically passed away in 2013 before the filming of Season Five.
Detective Frost's death got handled beautifully by the writers, from his death in Rizzoli and Isles Season 5 Episode 1 to Jane seeing a vision of him in Rizzoli and Isles Season 5 Episode 18.
The episodes throughout Season Five left us crying, laughing, and missing Lee Thompson Young's presence on our screens.

Sasha Alexander is an actress whose face you’ve probably seen on your TV screen several times over the last 25 years. Throughout her career, she’s built an impressive resume that includes credits in popular shows such as Shameless and NCIS. She is probably best known for playing one of the title characters in the series Rizzoli & Isles. In addition to the work she’s done in the TV world, Sasha has also been in several movies. The first episode of “NCIS” premiered in 2004 with news footage of George W. Bush boarding Air Force One transforming into a scripted scene of a fictional George W. Bush joshing about barbecue before one of his new bodyguard mysteriously drops dead. Forty-some odd minutes of Mark Harmon being right, Sasha Alexander frowning, and countless 9/11 references later, the bad guy is caught and the gang is free to solve another 18 seasons (and counting) of weekly mysteries. The show was an extreme product of its time, but in the grand tradition of procedurals about cops and military personnel, proved extremely malleable to fit whatever era it finds itself reflecting. In a television world increasingly marked by change and plummeting broadcast ratings, “NCIS” is still one of CBS’ most reliable series. It’s no wonder the network saw fit to produce yet another spinoff of it — though at the very least, “NCIS: Hawai’i...

Ludacris and Shane Graham spar as foster father and son in this inspirational story of real-life BMX star John Buultjens
“Another life lesson?” snaps flailing foster kid John (Shane Graham), as his new family attempt to throw him another emotional lifeline. This inspirational drama-cum-antiracist statement, sponsored by the likes of Vans, Etnies and Powell-Peralta, does indeed come over a bit like the action-sports version of the Disney movie but is luckily given just enough emotional ballast by its performers.
Graham stars as real-life BMX star John Buultjens – whose story has been transposed from Glasgow to Oakdale, California – who is taken into care at the start of the film aged nine for stabbing his abusive father (played by Buultjens himself). Already being drawn into the orbit of Nazi gangs, with a small swastika forcibly carved into his neck, this white supremacist poppet has to fight for his life in juvie, and grows into a tight-lipped,...

“The Ride” begins with a scene of unexpected brutality, engineered by a racist, feral kid. Even so, its “inspired by a true story” promise at the start rings a little tinny. And early on, the BMX-meets-“love wins” drama about a boy whose white supremacist roots and abusive home life land him in juvenile detention has an afterschool-special veneer, albeit somewhat gritty. The over-emotive score, particularly at the outset, punctuates the violence and the sentiment unnecessarily.
But the movie, streaming on Amazon, gains emotional traction when seven years later, John McCord finds himself released to an interracial foster couple. The reason for the film’s emotional resonance owes less to the screenplay — which teases too many easy tropes — than it does to the slow-burn chemistry between Shane Graham, who plays John of the set jaw and racist quips, and Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, who portrays the foster father who has seen a lot worse.

With films like The Help, Hidden Figures, and Green Book in the rearview mirror, I foolishly thought that Hollywood had learned its lesson and the patronizing, clichéd white savior narrative would be put to rest for at least another decade or so. In a time when the Black Lives Matter movement has never been more visible in mainstream media and conversations around racism and white supremacy are inspiring cultural reckoning, you would hope someone would think twice before going forward with a film where a Black man "saves" a white supremacist teen. But no, instead, we have The Ride, an upcoming indie film inspired by the real-life story of BMX star John Buultjens.
