T-Pain was at a karaoke party last year when an R&b-flavored country ballad starting playing over the system. The rapper-turned-singer didn’t recognize it, so he opened up Shazam to listen — and the result came back as “Tennessee Whiskey,” by Chris Stapleton. “I made it a part of my ‘sad playlist,’” T-Pain tells Rs. “The lyrics spoke to me.”

Sometimes, the best classic rock covers are the most unexpected ones. Dead Kennedys covered Elvis Presley’s “Viva Las Vegas” and that changed their live shows forever. Band member Jello Biafra explained why his band decided to put their edgy spin on an Elvis song and why that made them different from other bands of the time.
Dead Kennedys’ cover of Elvis Presley’s ‘Viva Las Vegas’ was meant to confuse fans
“Viva Las Vegas” remains one of the most famous songs from Elvis’ movies. Dead Kennedys recorded the song with some lyrical twists. Dead Kennedys’ version features the lines “Oh, I’m gonna give it everything I’ve got / Lady Luck’s with me, the dice stay hot / Got coke up my nose to dry away the snot.” Those are not the sort of lyrics the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll would sing.

Johnny Paycheck would have turned 83 this past Monday. In 1977, he scored three consecutive Top 10 country songs, including his biggest hit, the No. 1 “Take This Job and Shove It.” But while Paycheck, who died at age 64 in 2003, is synonymous with the song about sticking it to — and flipping off — The Man, it was actually written by David Allan Coe. Coe cut his version for his 1978 Family Album and performed it frequently in his shows, including on the latter-day concert document Biketoberfest ’01: Live From the Iron Horse Saloon.

Doug Supernaw, the Texas-born Nineties country singer who had a string of radio hits in the early part of the decade, including the 1993 Number One “I Don’t Call Him Daddy,” has died at 60 following a lengthy bout with lung and bladder cancer. Supernaw’s death was confirmed by his official Facebook on Friday.
Born in 1960 in Bryan, Texas, Supernaw was a durable honky-tonk singer with an approachable voice and everyman persona. After gaining a following in his home state, he landed a record deal with the now defunct Bna Records...

Hank Williams Jr., Marty Stuart, and songwriter Dean Dillon are the 2020 class of inductees into the Country Music Hall of Fame. The Country Music Association made the announcement on Wednesday morning.
Williams will fill the “Veterans Era Artist” slot, Stuart will be inducted as the “Modern Era Artist,” and Dillon in the “Songwriter” category, which rotates every three years with the “Non-Performer” and “Recording and/or Touring Musician” inductees.
Williams’ induction comes nearly 60 years after his father — the still influential Hank Williams — was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.

Like his longtime friend and collaborator John Prine, folk-country tunesmith Steve Goodman got his professional start in Chicago, penning advertising jingles during the day while working in clubs and bars at night. Goodman’s perspicacious songwriting, which he injected with a deft sense of humor and keen observations about the human condition, will be celebrated with the upcoming reissue of two LPs originally recorded for his own groundbreaking indie label, Red Pajamas.

Ashley McBryde and Dillon Carmichael have both been compared to Chris Stapleton for their old-school approach to country music. Last week, the rising singer-songwriters teamed up during a radio-station listener event in San Jose, California, to show off those throwback sensibilities by performing “Tennessee Whiskey,” the song that helped introduce Stapleton to a wide audience when he sang it with Justin Timberlake on the 2015 Cma Awards.

Just reading about David Allan Coe you can’t help but feel your eyes widen and your jaw drop when you realize just what he’s been about for much of his life and what made him that way. Having been raised in reform schools for the most part since he was young it was kind of obvious he was born to be an outlaw. By the time he was old enough he was being sent to one correctional facility after another, finally gaining encouragement to sing from one of his fellow inmates. Upon his release in 1967 he began living in

There are bands who play country music – and then there are honest-to-goodness country bands. Count Mike and the Moonpies among the latter.

Scene 32Field of Stone (2007) the first film by Shambhavi Kaul, is a feature-length documentary about the polarizing Harley-Davidson-riding country western singer David Allan Coe, but ten years later, that film looks like an anomaly. The Durham-based filmmaker and daughter of Mani Kaul, the acclaimed director associated with India’s Parallel Cinema movement, is now notable primarily for her experimental found-footage shorts. The first of these, Scene 32 (2009), begins with a wide, overhead shot of salt flats of India’s Kutch district, seemingly preparing the viewer for a landscape film. But unlike James Benning, Peter Hutton, or Tomonari Nishikawa, whose “landscape films” have deservedly gained recognition among film critics interested in the large umbrella of “experimental films,” as while as academics and artists working in a similar mode, Kaul seems unconcerned with duration and movement. After several seconds, she quickly cuts to a shot of the same flats taken from much closer to the ground.

There's a scene in the original 1976 Heartworn Highways that's become a central heartbeat of the cult film that chronicled Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark, Steve Young, David Allan Coe and others as they lived, wrote music and filled their lungs with smoke and song in Nashville, Tennessee. Van Zandt is sitting in his wood-paneled kitchen in a denim shirt, plucking "Waiting Around to Die" on a cherry red guitar. His girlfriend sways, but "Uncle" Seymour Washington, a retired blacksmith born to former slaves, just nods as his eyes, circled by tree-rings of wrinkles,...

The golf tournament also featured a concert which included performances by David Allan Coe and Phil Vassar, as well as an auction that featured items donated by Miley Cyrus, Garth Brooks, Darius Rucker, Michael Phelps and Brett Farve. I think Warmoth's own comments in Twitter-Wood yesterday sum up today's Daily TwitPic best: "I chose a shot that country music fans will appreciate and everyone else in the free world will at least experience bewilderment at." Penn Jillette (the guy on the left in that image off to the side), one half of the Penn & Teller comedy/magic/commentary team, apparently falls into the country music fan cateogry. He's quite happy to be in today's Daily TwitPic photo with country singer David Allan Coe.
It's worth noting two things about Coe: (1) he claims (or claimed) to have killed a man while in prison, which earned him a temporary space on death row and (2) two of his albums -- "Nothing Sacred" and "Underground" -- are laced with mature themes, profanity and outright racial slurs. The death row claim has been refuted somewhat, though it is a fact that Coe spent time in an Ohio prison.

Is there now such a thing as Neo-Classic ’70s Country-Rock?
Beware may be the best country-rock album David Allan Coe never got around to making himself. Will Oldham’s stage persona, Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, stepped up the ranks of his backing musicians on recent albums, abandoning his team of rough, occasionally error-prone indie rockers for tight ensembles who can replicate a 1970s outlaw-country band without dropping a false note. While no country rocker would likely ruminate in the elliptical, often illusory prose Oldham favors, they’d surely embrace the sweet ballroom-dance harmonies of “I Don’t Belong to Anyone,” the gallant clomp of “You Don’t Love Me” and “I Am Goodbye,” and the sweet, forlorn plod of “You Are Lost.” Oldham still finds room to stretch beyond the borders. “There Is Something I Have To Say” swells in that listless ennui he favored in a past life, while “Afraid...
