Chicago – “And So it Goes” can be summed up in its incredibly weak title, as just lazy hackery. In attempting to tell a story of redemption for a old white rich man, the film falls back on clichés, predictability, improbability, overdone physical comedy and stereotypes. The first-time pairing of Michael Douglas and Diane Keaton, and the direction of old pro Rob Reiner, couldn’t overcome the stench of the hackneyed screenplay.
Rating: 2.0/5.0
Rob Reiner’s ability to recognize good scripts seems to have faded. The man knows how to make American classics (“When Harry Met Sally…,” “A Few Good Men,” “The Princess Bride,” etc.), but can’t seem to find or identify the type of work lately that can keep his reputation sound. The Mark Andrus screenplay is just not interesting, and couldn’t have been interesting on paper. None of the characters have any depth, they are just given...

I’m sure some critics will be dismissive of And So It Goes, writing it off as just another “geezer pleaser” (to use the term coined by Variety for entertainment that appeals to an older crowd). But this sweet film deserves a break, especially as it offers juicy leading roles to Michael Douglas and Diane Keaton. Neither one of them sloughs off this romantic yarn: these are conscientious actors and it’s a pleasure to watch them work together. The screenplay, by Mark Andrus (As Good As It Gets), isn’t daring or highly original, but it offers its stars a vehicle that calls on both their comedic and dramatic chops. Director Rob Reiner knows this territory well and handles the material...

And So It Goes
Written by Mark Andrus
Directed by Rob Reiner
USA, 2014
While most movies end with ‘happily ever after’, real life is rarely that generous. Rob Reiner’s latest romantic-comedy, And So It Goes, ponders the challenges of love and loss for the senior set. Though it has the noblest of intentions, there’s just not enough romance or comedy to warrant a recommendation. Even the considerable charms of Michael Douglas and Diane Keaton aren’t enough to distract you from the glacial pacing and familiar storylines.
Douglas plays Oren Little, an embittered widower whose only kind words are reserved for potential clients of his real estate agency. All Oren wants is to sell his family home and retire to a sleepy little village in Vermont. Living next door to him is the ever-cheery widow, Leah (Diane Keaton), who spends her evenings cultivating a second career as a middling lounge singer.

Chicago – Rob Reiner has lived two distinct show business lives. He played a major role in one of the most famous television shows in history, “All in the Family,” and broke out afterward as a classic American film director, with hits such as “This is Spinal Tap” and “The Princess Bride.” His latest film is “And So it Goes.”
The film stars Michael Douglas and Diane Keaton, as an older couple discovering a connection that on the surface seems highly unlikely. This is Rob Reiner’s 15th feature film as director, after such classics as “The Sure Thing,” “Stand By Me,” “When Harry Met Sally…,” “Misery,” “A Few Good Men,” “The American President” and “Ghosts of Mississippi.” Michael Douglas last worked with Reiner when he portrayed the title character in “The American President.” Reiner himself performs a small supporting role in “And So it Goes.”

According to director Rob Reiner, the seed for his new movie, And So It Goes, was planted a few years ago at a press junket for The Bucket List. One of the reporters asked Jack Nicholson what was on his bucket list, and the actor replied, “one more great romance.” That stimulated Reiner, the producers, and screenwriter Mark Andrus (As Good As It Gets) to build a picture around the idea of a late-in-life love story. With Michael Douglas and Diane Keaton cast as the sixtysomething lovers, the film aims to tap an underserved audience.

Following the path of “Rumor Has It” and “The Bucket List," “And So It Goes” is the latest effort from Rob Reiner, and he has a similarly stellar starry cast and crew to match those aforementioned hits.Reiner has taken the helm of the Mark Andrus-penned script (the writer behind “As Good As It Gets”), with Michael Douglas playing Oren, a self-centered real estate agent who couldn’t care less about anyone else. But his life is turned upside down when his estranged son suddenly drops off a granddaughter he never knew. Now, with the help of his determined and loveable neighbor, Leah, Oren stubbornly learns to care and, unexpectedly, to fall in love again. Diane Keaton is the spunky neighbor, in a movie that will reunite Douglas with his “The American President” director (it will be Keaton's first round with Reiner). The supporting cast includes Sterling Jerins (seen...

This already sounds like a great combination. Just stop for a second and try to imagine Michael Douglas and Diane Keaton in a movie titled And So It Goes.
An interesting title for a comedy which comes from director P.J. Hogan who usually deals with weddings in his projects (My Best Friend’s Wedding or Muriel’s Wedding for example), you’ll admit!
The movie comes from writer Mark Andrus and will center on Douglas as a self-centered and eccentric realtor who couldn’t care less about anyone else. But when his estranged son suddenly drops off a granddaughter he never knew, his life is turned upside down.

Though he's never gone away, exactly, Michael Douglas is due for a comeback-- and seems to have it coming in spades, with a role playing Ronald Reagan in the political drama Reykjavik and, coming much sooner, a splashy part playing Liberace in Steven Soderbergh's biopic Behind The Candelabra, due on HBO next year. Diane Keaton, who's been acting almost exactly as long as Douglas has, needs a comeback much more-- she hasn't starred in a movie anyone actually saw since Something's Gotta Give nearly 10 years ago, and a splashy role in the HBO series Tilda failed to materialize when the show wasn't picked up. So maybe Douglas can help Keaton pick up a little steam, with the two of them teaming up for And So It Goes., a romantic comedy from As Good As It Gets writer Mark Andrus. Which might be why Foresight Unlimited and director Pj Hogan are putting together So It Goes..., which boasts the drawing power of Michael Douglas, Diane Keaton and life-affirming lessons. As Good as It Gets writer Mark Andrus has a new job. We’ve just learned that Andrus will be responsible for the adaptation of Matthew Dicks‘ novel titled Unexpectedly, Milo. Thanks to Andrew Lauren Prods. who has partnered with the Gotham Group, we’ll soon have a chance to watch one crazy cross-country journey on a big screen.
Unexpectedly, Milo was published two years ago, and from what I see in the description part of the novel, it looks quite interesting and funny so far. They also describe it as a touching novel about finding oneself, embracing the journey, and, unexpectedly, love.
It actually follows a home health-care worker who, after seeing a video confessional, sets out on a journey to help a mysterious woman repair her life. Along the way, he is forced to confront the Ocd that he has kept secret his entire life, and in doing so he finds love.

In a pre-emptive bid, Columbia Pictures has optioned Chris Van Allsburg's picture book The Sweetest Fig, which Mark Andrus will adapt as a feature film. Michael Besman, Bill Teitler and Van Allsburg are producing. The project reunites Andrus and Besman, who wrote and produced, respectively, the studio's 1997 feature As Good as It Gets. Fig also reunites author Van Allsburg with the studio as the author wrote the book Jumanji, which Columbia released as a feature film in 1995. Fig, published in 1993, is the story of a villainous dentist who is given a pair of magic figs by a patient who can't afford to pay cash. The figs have the power to make dreams come true, which he disbelieves but discovers to be true after eating the first one. He makes plans to eat the second fig to become the richest man in the world, but in a turn of events, his oppressed terrier Marcel gobbles it up and reverses the master-slave relationship. Besman brought the book to the studio's executive vp Amy Baer, who will oversee. Columbia co-presidents of production Doug Belgrad and Matt Tolmach lobbied aggressively to acquire the material for Andrus to adapt.
