"Starship Troopers" was not a big hit when it arrived in 1997, and many audiences didn't know what to make of the darkly satirical tone created by "RoboCop" filmmaker Paul Verhoeven. In the years since its release, however, Verhoeven's violent, funny, action-packed sci-fi flick has been re-evaluated and become both a cult classic and a movie that some people still don't understand.
Adapted from Robert A. Heinlein's novel, "Starship Troopers" follows a group of youngsters who get swept up in being soldiers when alien bugs attack Earth. Of course, the war ends up being hell, and many of these fresh young faces are cut down in increasingly nasty ways. And then, just in case all of the satire went over your head, Verhoeven ends things by having Neil Patrick Harris show up dressed in a Nazi uniform.

I was thinking about my mother
I was thinking about what’s mine
I was living my life like a Hollywood
But I was dying, dying on the vine
–– John Cale
It was a couple years ago that I can remember seeing images from, or maybe just a poster for, Earwig and the Witch, a latter-period Studio Ghibli work directed by none other than Hayao Miyazaki’s own son, Goro (himself an accomplished director). I had a distinctly negative reaction to these images, their gaudy computer-generated aesthetic evoking the hideous look of other modern anime “auteur” Shinji Aramaki. While something of a latecomer to the weeb life who can’t speak with complete and utter authority on trends, movements, styles of the form, I could make a healthy guess that the master Hayao felt some discontent with this direction. Thus we have him rolling up his sleeves and coming out...

Whoever wins, we lose. When Disney wins, however, everyone loses.
/Film reported back in May of 2023 that Disney, as part of its massive acquisition of 20th Century Fox in 2019, had inherited an already-complete 10-episode anime TV series based on the nerd-sating "Alien vs. Predator" series. The show's existence was confirmed by Joshua Izzo, the former director of licensing at 20th Century Fox, on the "Perfect Organism" podcast. Izzo said that the 10-episode series was complete, but that it was locked in a vault at Disney, hidden from public view. This is a common practice during mergers and management changes. The new administration as a film studio or record label, wanting to work solely on their own projects, will often shelve the previous administration's projects as a mode of keeping the slate clean. This means a lot of excellent art has never seen the light of day, or was released with so little fanfare,...

Back in early 2020, we heard mention of an Alien vs. Predator anime series that had been made before the 20th Century Fox / Disney merger and never released. Now the folks at the Perfect Organism podcast have scored an interview with Joshua Izzo, who made Alien Day an official event while working at Fox. During this interview, Izzo confirmed that an Alien vs. Predator anime series was produced, all ten episodes were completed… and now they’ve just been sitting on a shelf (a shelf that is now inside the Disney vault) for years.
Izzo said (with thanks to Avp Galaxy for the transcript), “One thing that did not happen during Alien Day in 2016 was – there is sitting at Disney now, at 20th [Studios], 10 episodes of a fully completed Alien vs. Predator anime series that I produced. It’s done. It’s in the can. It’s mixed, it’s finished. It...

Disney is finally making a new "Alien" movie following the company's acquisition of Fox in 2019, and in the wake of its successful "Predator" prequel "Prey" on Hulu no less. But it turns out, the company is already sitting on an animated mash-up of these two franchises that is done and ready to go. Unfortunately, the powers that be at the House of Mouse have decided not to release it, leaving us with the knowledge that a 10-episode "Alien vs. Predator" anime is just rotting in a vault for no good reason.
The information came directly from Joshua Izzo, the former licensing director at 20th Century Fox before the Disney acquisition. He spoke with the "Perfect Organism Podcast" on Alien Day last month (via IGN) and decided to spill the beans, revealing that he worked on an "Alien vs. Predator" anime series -- one that's been completely finished and is now...

Adult Swim and Crunchyroll’s upcoming animated series “Blade Runner: Black Lotus” takes place between the events of Ridley Scott’s 1982 classic “Blade Runner” and Denis Villeneuve’s 2017 sequel “Blade Runner: 2049.” Set in a futuristic world that plays by its own very strict rules, the minds behind the series at Alcon Entertainment, the owner of the “keeper” of the “Blade Runner” IP, strived to make sure that everything in their new series did in fact play by those rules.
Lucky for the “Black Lotus” team, there are already people at Alcon who spend their days keeping the “Blade Runner” timeline straight.
“We have two people who work for us at Alcon whose— I wouldn’t say it’s their full-time job, (but) it’s the majority of their job,” Andrew Kosgrove, the co-founder and co-ceo of Alcon, said Tuesday during a virtual panel at the Television Critics Association’s press tour.

Let’s think of a hypothetical scenario. The Netflix people invite Kenji Kamiyama and Shinji Aramaki (the first one was involved in the various “Ghost in the Shell”-anime series and the second is an experienced professional in the field) to come to their offices to talk about the upcoming Netflix release of the new “Ghost in the Shell”-series. The two directors reluctantly agree and the executive continues. “We are going to globalize the franchise, meaning in particular, making it more approachable to the western audience, and especially the Us. The Us is, after all, the market where you can make real money. And...

This Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 review contains no spoilers.
Many old anime series have developed strong reputations over the years, but Ghost in the Shell has an especially influential legacy and it helped redefine anime’s relationship with the cyberpunk subgenre of science fiction. However, in a time where there are exceptional science fiction series like Westworld and Devs that tackle similar themes of artificial intelligence, independence, and free will, it’s no longer just enough to tell an exciting sci-fi narrative with cool visuals.
The whole genre has evolved and even though Ghost in the Shell is a formative text on the subject, it’s pushed into a position where it has to work much harder than it has in the past due to the growing sophistication of science fiction. Does the return of Ghost in the Shell rise to the occasion and update its firmware to an impressive new build,...

Netflix has given us our first look at their upcoming Ghost in the Shell: Sac_2045 anime series in the form of a brief teaser trailer. It’s doesn’t give us much, but it does show off the animation style of the series, which is different from anything I’ve seen from the Ghost in the Shell franchise in the past.
The series is set in the year 2045, and “after global capitalism has defaulted, Japan's elite Section 9 begins conducting covert cyber operations.”
The series will be directed by Shinji Aramaki (Appleseed) and Kenji Kamiyama, and newcomer Ilya Kuvshinow is heading up the animation and character design for the series.
The new Ghost in the Shell anime is confirmed to have two seasons so far with 12 episodes planned for each. We don’t have any other info to share on the series right now, but check out the teaser below and...

Anime maniacs have been waiting for this day: Eight years ago, Hiroyuki Imaishi co-founded Studio Trigger with the goal of one day hatching a feature as wild and innovative as his TV series “Gurren Lagann” and “Kill la Kill.” Now he has. Every bit as loud and ambitious as one might expect from a visual artist with such a hyperactive imagination, .

This week, we’ve gotten to hear lots of really cool reports from the Annecy International Animation Festival in France. Once thing that is super cool is the first piece of character artwork that Netflix shared at their panel for the upcoming Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045. Shinji Aramaki and Kenji Kamiyama (Ultraman) are set to direct, and newcomer Ilya Kuvshinow will head up animation and character design for the series.
Variety reports the following about the series:
The series will be the first time the IP will be fully-animated in 3Dcg. Kamiyama and Production I.G will team up with Aramaki and Sola Digital Arts, who have brought Japanese 3Dcg animation to the world on work such as 2004’s “Appleseed.” The Netflix reboot also marks the first time that the franchise will have two directors shaping its execution.

Annecy, France — On Tuesday night at the Annecy Intl. Animation Festival, Netflix held one of its most highly-anticipated panels for one of its most dedicated fan-bases: Netflix Original Anime: A Celebration of Anime and a Look Ahead.
Appropriately enough, this year’s festival is honoring Japan and its animation tradition, past and present, as the official Guest Country. Netflix, eager to capitalize on that tradition, and embed itself in the Japanese market as a producer, has commissioned a strong slate of originals and reboots meant to honor the country’s animation history while pushing the envelope of narrative and technology.
Announced last December, Netflix has commissioned a new “Ghost in the Shell” reboot titled: “Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045” from “Ultraman” directors Shinji Aramaki and Kenji Kamiyama. The two confirmed on Tuesday night that relative animation newcomer Ilya Kuvshinow will head character design on the show. Accompanying the announcement,...

Netflix is bolstering its lineup of anime with projects including an adaptation of video game Dragon’s Dogma and a series from the creators of Kick Ass.
This comes after it unveiled a slate of five anime series last year including a remake of its own sci-fi series Altered Carbon. The spin-off is being produced by Anima and will explore new elements of the story mythology.
The Svod service is partnering with Sublimation on Dragon’s Dogma, a remake of the RPG video game. It will follow a man’s journey seeking revenge on a dragon who stole his heart.
Spriggan is an original series based on a classic manga tale from Hiroshi Takashige and illustrated by Ryoji Minagawa. It is an edgy sci-fi battle action about a man with supernatural powers to seal historical remains and is produced by David Production.

We’ve got a brand new trailer to share with you for Netflix’s upcoming Ultraman anime series! The series is an adaptation of the manga by Eiichi Shimizu and Tomohiro Shiguchi, which serves as a sequel to the original 1966 Ultraman series. I love that this is going to be a continuation of the original story, and it looks like it’s going to be great! I also dig the the animation style and design work.
Here’s the synopsis that was released for the series:
“Several years have passed since the events of Ultraman, with the legendary “Giant of Light” now a memory, as it is believed he returned home after fighting the many giant aliens that invaded the Earth. Shin Hayata’s son Shinjiro seems to possess a strange ability, and it is this ability, along with his father’s revelation that he was Ultraman, that leads Shinjiro...

Netflix’s major push into anime continues with the announcement the streaming giant is planning a brand new “Ghost in the Shell” anime for a 2020 debut. The series, officially titled “Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045,” is being co-directed by Kenji Kamiyama (“Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex”) and Shinji Araki (“Appleseed”). It’s unclear at this point whether or not the project is a feature film or a television series.
“Ghost in the Shell” originally started as a hugely popular manga series written and illustrated by Masamune Shirow. The series was famously adapted into a 1995 anime film of the same name, directed by Mamoru Oshii. The anime “Ghost in the Shell” is largely credited with influencing science-fiction cinema into the 21st century, most evidently “The Matrix” soundtrack.
While Netflix has not revealed further details about “Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045,” here’s hoping the voice cast remains culturally appropriate.

Back in 2017, Shinichiro Watanabe helped bridge the gap between Ridley Scott's Blade Runner and Denis Villeneuve's Blade Runner 2049 with his anime short film Black Out 2022, and now it's been announced that he'll serve as a creative producer on Blade Runner - Black Lotus, a new anime series set in the year 2032.
Comprised of 13 30-minute installments from Sola Digital Arts, Blade Runner - Black Lotus will be directed by Shinji Aramaki and Kenji Kamiyama, with Adult Swim set to air the English-dubbed episodes and Crunchyroll set to stream the episodes around the world. A premiere date and plot details have yet to be announced, but we'll keep Daily Dead readers updated on further announcements. In the meantime, you can read the press release for additional information:

There’s a new Blade Runner anime series going into development called Blade Runner - Black Lotus, and it was inspired by Blade Runner 2049.
We may never see another Blade Runner movie again because they have been box office bombs, but at least we will be getting more stories set in the universe in anime form! Hey, it’s better than nothing!
The plot of the series is being kept under wraps, it’s been confirmed that the story will “take place in 2032 and will include some familiar characters from the Blade Runner universe.”
The series will be produced by Alcon Entertainment, WarnerMedia’s Adult Swim, and Crunchyroll. The series will air on Adult Swim’s Toonami programming block. Crunchyroll will handle worldwide streaming.
Blade Runner – Black Lotus will consist of 13 half-hour episodes, and the animation is being done by Sola Digital Arts, who also worked on the new Ultraman series.
