After the runaway success of Netflix and Tim Burton’s Addams Family stand-alone series Wednesday starring Jenna Ortega, the streamer renewed it for second season in January 2023. That decision came less than three months after the eight-episode Season 1 premiered, eventually becoming the most-watched original series ever on the streamer ever with more than 252 million views to date, far surpassing Stranger Things‘ Season 4, Dahmer and Season 1 of Bridgerton on the all-time list.
Season 1 ending up scoring 12 Emmy nominations, including for Ortega in Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, becoming just the third Latina to ever be nominated in a leading actress category. The series won four Emmys, though Ortega lost out to Abbott Elementary‘s Quinta Brunson on Emmy night.

Two weeks after Conan O’Brien’s triumphant return to his former home at 30 Rock, another homecoming of sorts is set to take place on his old show.
Drummer Jay Weinberg, who currently serves as drummer for crossover thrash band Suicidal Tendencies, will sit in with Late Night with Seth Meyers’ 8G Band next month.
Under the musical direction of Fred Armisen, The 8G Band frequently invites artists to sub in for Armisen on drums. Other recent guest drummers have included Fall Out Boy’s Andrew Hurley, No Doubt’s Adrian Young, and Mudhoney’s Dan Peters.
Weinberg’s presence on Late Night creates something of a full-circle moment for the franchise. His father, Max Weinberg, was the drummer and bandleader for O’Brien’s house band.

"You're like a fluffy piece of cotton candy with legs!" Netflix has revealed an official trailer for Thelma the Unicorn, an animated musical comedy from filmmakers Jared Hess & Lynn Wang. Made by Mikros Animation and Netflix Animation, along with Buzzfeed Studios, Matchbox Hero, Scholastic Entertainment. Thelma is a small-time pony who dreams of becoming a glamorous music star. In a moment of fate, Thelma is transformed into a unicorn and she instantly rises to global stardom, but this new life of fame comes at a cost. This animated comedy stars singer / songwriter Brittany Howard as the voice of Thelma, along with Will Forte, Jemaine Clement, Edi Patterson, Maliaka Mitchell, Ally Dixon, Fred Armisen, Zach Galifianakis, and Jon Heder. This looks way, way too similar to the Sing series of movies, with singing animals competing in competitions. Though I do like the plot in this being inspired by being fake (on...

"For months, my life has just been a struggle between sanity and madness." Hulu has revealed an official trailer for a documentary film titled The Contestant, a fascinating, unbelievable true story about a game show contestant in Japan in the 1990s known as "Nasubi". It's a bizarre cross between The Truman Show and Oldboy (and predates both of these films), but it actually really happened. This true story of a Japanese reality TV star left naked in a room for more than a year, tasked with filling out magazine sweepstakes to earn food & clothing, prompts innumerable questions about our culture of oversharing. Before the reality TV craze, there was this ominous harbinger in Japan of what was to come in oversharing-obsessed culture. The Contestant traces the experience of aspiring comedian Tomoaki Hamatsu, nicknamed Nasubi, who unwittingly became an extreme case study. Hulu documentary “The Contestant” is putting “The Truman Show” to shame.
Centered on the shocking true story of Japanese comedian Tomoaki “Nasubi” Hamatsu, the feature is written and directed by Clair Titley. “The Contestant” charts the early days of reality TV in the 1990s, with Nasubi an unknowing participant in a twisted reality show. Nasubi was trapped alone and naked in an apartment for 15 months with cameras surrounding him as he fulfilled tasks like entering magazine sweepstakes to earn food and clothing. The show was watched by more than 15 million people and titled “Denpa Shonen: A Life in Prizes.”
Per the official synopsis for “The Contestant,” Nasubi thought he was attending an audition when a successful Japanese TV producer, Toshio Tsuchiya, enlisted him to take part in a challenge. Tsuchiya led Nasubi into a room, ordered him to strip naked, and left him with a stack of magazines. Nasubi’s...

Kristen Wiig was inducted into Saturday Night Live’s “Five-Timers Club” this past weekend with a little help from her friends Matt Damon, Jon Hamm, Paul Rudd, Will Forte, Fred Armisen, Martin Short, Ryan Gosling, and Paula Pell.
Joined by musical guest Raye, Wiig, a Saturday Night Live cast member from 2005-2012, hosted SNL’s April 6, 2024 episode, and it averaged 4,575,000 total viewers and 1,083,000 P18-49 viewers, per live-plus-same-day data from Nielsen.
If those numbers look big, that’s because they are. Out of the 16 SNL episodes that have aired this season to-date, the April 6 episode comes in at No. 4 overall in total viewers, and is up +18% from the most-recent SNL episode (hosted by Ramy Youssef a week earlier). It's always a thrill when a former "Saturday Night Live" cast member comes back to Studio 8H to host the late night sketch comedy show. That's especially true when it's a cast member as beloved as Kristen Wiig. That last time the "Bridesmaids" star hosted "SNL" was in December 2020, and it just so happens the best sketch of the night was a new holiday favorite where she plays a mother who gets a robe for Christmas while the rest of the family gets a plethora of better gifts. However, since Kristen Wiig was hosting "SNL" for a fifth time this past weekend, she got a different robe. And she wasn't the only one.
While it's become customary for newly inducted Five Timers Club hosts to get monologue bits that bring back some legendary hosts like Steve Martin and Tom Hanks, it's not always logistically possible to make it a star-studded affair.

When Kristen Wiig took the stage in Studio 8H to host “Saturday Night Live” April 6, she achieved one of the most coveted milestones in sketch comedy: joining the Five-Timers Club. One of the show’s longest-running traditions is gifting people who have hosted five times an honorary jacket during their monologue, which typically features appearances from other celebrities in the club.
“I am so happy to be back, and I am so excited because it is my fifth time hosting,” Wiig said when she took the stage. “So I’m officially in the Five-Timers Club!”
But while Wiig’s monologue did feature plenty of A-list cameos, few actually had the distinction of being Five-Timers. She was quickly visited by Matt Damon, who wore the special jacket despite having only hosted the show twice.

The only problem with having Kristen Wiig return to Saturday Night Live as host is she won’t be back for the next show.
Not only was this week’s edition the funniest overall of the current season, it looked like the most fun many of the participants have had all year. And that included a seemingly endless conga line of special guests, which may have set an official SNL record for cameos.
That could be researched, but who cares? It was a lot:
Matt Damon, Jon Hamm, Paul Rudd, Will Forte, Fred Armisen, Martin Short, Ryan Gosling, Paula Pell. Normally, when former cast members or hosts turn up on SNL unbilled, it brings on suggestions from the “SNL is having a weak season” crowd that Lorne Michaels felt like he needed to call in some favors.
In this case, it honestly looked more like all these people just wanted...

Normally, when former cast members or hosts turn up on SNL unbilled, it brings on suggestions from the “SNL is having a weak season” crowd that Lorne Michaels felt like he needed to call in some favors.
In this case, it honestly looked more like all these people just wanted...

Former SNL cast member Kristen Wiig joined the show’s “five-timers club” on Saturday, with her monologue featuring appearances by a number of other former hosts, some of whom haven’t had that gig five times but wore jackets of their own nonetheless.

Kristen Wiig returned to Saturday Night Live to host the show for the fifth time, which meant she would be inducted into the five-timers club.
“I am so happy to be back, and I am so excited because it is my fifth time hosting, so I am officially in the five-timers club,” Wiig said at the beginning of her monologue.
The Palm Royale star then took a moment to say hello to the band and explain that, as a former cast member, it was special to be a part of the exclusive club. Paul Rudd popped up among the audience with his club jacket asking if he could see the script to be part of the sketch where she gets the jacket.
“Oh! No, I’m sorry. I don’t think we’re doing one of those,” Wiig said.
Rudd seemed disappointed, and former writer Paula Pell made an appearance,...

SNL Video: Matt Damon, Paul Rudd, Ryan Gosling and More Welcome Kristen Wiig to the Five-Timers Club
Kristen Wiig is now officially a member of Saturday Night Live’s Five-Timers Club, and she’s in some pretty exclusive company. Well, maybe not that exclusive.
The former SNL cast member kicked off her fifth stint as host on Saturday with a monologue where she celebrated her milestone achievement. But she was soon reminded that more than a few other celebrities have hosted five times as well, with Paul Rudd popping up in the audience wearing his Five-Timers jacket and hoping there’d be a sketch with a bunch of celeb cameos that he could join in on.

It was a big night for Kristen Wiig on Saturday Night Live as she joined the Five-Timers Club. However, she was welcomed into the elite group by a bunch of mostly Non-Five-Timers Club members.
The actress and comedian kicked off her monologue, saying, “I am so happy to be back, and I am so excited because it is my fifth time hosting. So I’m officially in the Five-Timers Club!”
She then took a moment to acknowledge the sketch comedy show’s band, but shortly after, that’s when the celebrity cameos started, beginning with Paul Rudd, who previously joined the club in 2021.
“I also heard a rumor that you might be doing one of those five-timer sketches featuring awesome celebrity cameos,” Rudd said after popping up in the Studio 8H audience. “So, is there like a script or something I could look at for that?” But unfortunately, Wiig informed...

A star-studded group of veteran “Saturday Night Live” guest hosts were on hand this evening to welcome Kristen Wiig into the “Five-Timers Club.” But much to Wiig’s chagrin, most of them haven’t matched her feat of actually hosting “SNL” five times.
The former “Saturday Night Live” cast member made her fifth appearance as host — having previously hit the stage in 2013, 2016 and twice in 2020.
The stolen “SNL” valor actually began with a legit five-timer: Paul Rudd, on hand to welcome her from the audience..
“As a former cast member, it is very special,” Wiig said. “I’m really excited about getting my jacket tonight… they don’t just hand the jackets off to anyone.”
Well, not quite. Soon more stars came out: Matt Damon, Jon Hamm, Martin Short, Will Forte, Fred Armisen, Martin Short and Ryan Gosling. None of whom haven actually hosted five times yet.

Lorne Michaels is an expert at celebrating the legacy of “Saturday Night Live.” The show’s creator has produced variety specials for the NBC program’s 15th anniversary, 25th anniversary and 40th anniversary, so the upcoming 50th season should have a highly entertaining spectacle. Nothing less than a three-hour event would be expected, but how else should “SNL” celebrate the golden anniversary season, which would begin in the autumn of 2024 and continue through May, 2025?
Here is our exciting, fun suggestion for a way to go above and beyond for the live special. Over the course of a 20-22 episode season, NBC would certainly have almost every episode featuring the current cast along with hot guest hosts and musical guests. However, for the other five episodes spread out over several months, devote an entire 90 minutes to each previous decade. Invite back the biggest cast members from a decade along with well-known guest hosts and music stars.

From Beanie Babies to Pop-Tarts, the history of distinctly American consumerism is taking a big screen swing.
Jerry Seinfeld writes, directs, and stars in Netflix’s “Unfrosted: The Pop-Tart Story” centered on cereal rival companies Kellogg’s and Post that set out in a culinary equivalent of the space race: create a pastry that will change the face of breakfast. The film is set in the aptly-titled Battle Creek, Michigan in 1963. “Unfrosted” marks Seinfeld’s directorial debut.
The all-star cast includes Melissa McCarthy, Jim Gaffigan, Amy Schumer, Max Greenfield, Christian Slater, Bill Burr, Daniel Levy, James Marsden, Jack McBrayer, Thomas Lennon, Bobby Moynihan, Adrian Martinez, Sarah Cooper, and Fred Armisen. Hugh Grant also plays an early Tony the Tiger mascot, swapping the Oompa Loompa orange from “Wonka” for tiger stripes in a full-on costume you have to see to believe.

The space race rarely seemed so serious.
Jerry Seinfeld’s new Netflix comedy Unfrosted: The Pop-Tart Story charts a challenge that’s cleverly made to seem equally consequential: the ’60s-era battle between Kellogg’s and Post cereal companies to reinvent breakfast with the development of what would come to be known as Pop-Tarts.
And the stakes are high – and deadly.
“I believe we have split the atom of breakfast,” Seinfeld’s character pronounces.
After a series of cutthroat developments, Amy Schumer’s character ponders solemnly, “How did it get this far?”
“It’s breakfast,” comes the response. “Things happen.”
Netflix has assembled an all-star cast to tell this truth-inspired tale, with Seinfeld, making his directorial feature debut, starring alongside Melissa McCarthy, Jim Gaffigan, Amy Schumer and a slew of famous faces in cameo appearances. Among them: Hugh Grant, Max Greenfield, Bill Burr,...

Not a single person asked for this, but we're getting it anyway. You likely never wondered about the intense brand rivalry between Kellogg's and Post that went into the invention of Pop-Tarts -- and, honestly, why would you? -- but the real-life drama behind the breakfast staple proved too much to resist, apparently. In a world where we can get an Oscar-winning drama about Facebook from one of our greatest living directors, a weirdly watchable biopic on the guy behind McDonald's starring Batman, and most recently Ben Affleck and Matt Damon's "Moneyball"-like deep-dive into Nike's Air Jordan sneakers, why the heck wouldn't we get a movie all about the process behind how breakfast was reinvented forever?
From part-time comedian and star of "Bee Movie," "Unfrosted" marks Jerry Seinfeld's feature film directorial debut, stars an all-star ensemble of comedic talent, and, after years of Seinfeld threatening us with this movie,...

What’s the deal with Unfrosted, the new Netflix movie from Jerry Seinfeld? Thanks to the new trailer, we find out exactly how the comedy spoofs the invention of Pop-Tarts. Watch it below.
Making his feature directorial debut, Seinfeld stars as a Kellogg’s cereal exec who aims to redefine breakfast with the toaster pastry we now know as the Pop-Tart. With Melissa McCarthy at his side, Seinfeld faces off against Post exec Amy Schumer, “stacking the deck” by enlisting celebrities like Steve Schwinn, “Chef Boyardee,” and Jack Lalanne.

Netflix has released the trailer for Jerry Seinfeld’s upcoming Pop-Tart movie, “Unfrosted,” set for release on May 3.
Per Netflix’s Tudum, the logline for “Unfrosted” reads, “Michigan, 1963. Kellogg’s and Post, sworn cereal rivals, race to create a pastry that will change the face of breakfast forever. A tale of ambition, betrayal, sugar, and menacing milkmen, ‘Unfrosted’ stars writer-director Jerry Seinfeld.”
As Tudum acknowledges on the official “Unfrosted” page, Seinfeld has been contemplating the Pop-Tart origin story for years. For example, he made his artistic vision clear in a 2018 post on X/Twitter: “At one point I was thinking about an invention of the Pop Tart movie. Imagine the drunk on sugar-power Kellogg’s cereal culture of the mid-60’s in Battle Creek, Mi. That’s a vibe I could work with.” He also brought up the idea on “The Late Show” in 2010.

“Wednesday’s child is full of woe.”
When Charles Addams was helping turn his amusing gothic New Yorker cartoons into a television series, the little girl needed a name, and he used a line from an old-time children’s poem. He’d been at the drawing board with these characters since 1938, although Gomez and Morticia’s daughter didn’t arrive until 1944. At different times, she was older or younger than her sibling, Pugsley.
Ever since her arrival, Wednesday has been a fixture, her pale skin, pig-tailed black hair, and solemn expression imprinted on future generations of Goth girls. From Lisa Loring to Christina Ricci, the live-action look has endured as the character has aged from her purported six years old in the original series pilot to 18 in the 2010 Broadway musical adaptation.

Since I was a child, I love to have the famous Chocos in my breakfast. I mean, who doesn’t love chocos? Right from childhood to grown-ups, all admire the taste of this tasty breakfast item.
Then there are others like cornflakes, Bran flakes, and other cereals as well on our table. The breakfast industry is hugely populated with a variety of products. Today, we will be exploring the story of the creation of one such product.
Kellogg’s is undoubtedly a very successful, multi-billion dollar corporation whose products will be part of almost everyone’s pantry. But there’s not only this company that is the breakfast table of almost every home.

In the documentary “Resynator,” director Alison Tavel resurrects a synthesizer prototype that her late father, Don, invented.
Tavel, who lost her father when she was just 10 weeks old, initially wanted to make a short film doc about the synthesizer, which her father called the Resynator. The late-1970s invention generated a lot of buzz but never reached mass production. Tavel’s curiosity about the instrument ultimately led the director on a journey that helped her not only understand the Resynator and how it worked, but also who her father really was.
Tavel’s short doc eventually turned into a 96-minute film that includes interviews with estranged family, friends, inventors and celebrated musicians including Peter Gabriel, Fred Armisen and Jon Anderson.
Variety spoke to Tavel ahead of the doc’s SXSW world premiere on March 10.

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are New York City record-breakers: The duo’s Restless Leg comedy tour broke the record for most consecutive shows by any comedian at the famed Beacon Theatre, selling out 11 consecutive shows.
The Beacon engagement of the former Saturday Night Live cast mates ran between February 7 and 18. The record attendance was announced by Beacon owner Madison Square Garden Entertainment Corp.
The previous Beacon record of 10 consecutive shows was set in October by Trevor Noah.
The Restless Leg tour marked the first time either Fey or Poehler performed at the Upper West Side venue. During the engagement, the two welcomed surprise guests from their SNL days, including Fred Armisen, Rachel Dratch, and Maya Rudolph. The shows were promoted by Live Nation.

Zoe Lister-Jones was proud to attend Sunday’s Spirit Awards, and the reason is twofold. First, the multihyphenate talent turned up in Santa Monica to support a pair of nominations for Roku’s Slip, the original series she created, starred in and executive produced alongside a team that includes Dakota Johnson. Reason No. 2: She did so by walking into the event hand-in-hand with a new love in her life.
When the subject of her plus-one came up during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the 41-year-old Lister-Jones responded with a big reveal: “I’m here, I’m queer, I have some fear but I’m working through it.” Lister-Jones is in a new relationship with a fellow filmmaker, Sammi Cohen, who most recently directed Netflix’s You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah, the teen comedy starring Adam Sandler and family including wife Jackie and their daughters Sadie and Sunny.

How many drummers does it take to make a late-night show? Well over 300 if you’re Late Night with Seth Meyers.
Drummers have been a fixture in late-night for years – think of Max Weinberg, the longtime drummer for Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band who became the bandleader for Conan O’Brien and Ed Shaughnessy on The Tonight Show with Jonny Carson – but Meyers’ NBC show has paved a new path for stick wizards.
Eric Leiderman, a producer on the show, has been overseeing a rotating group of drummers that since the show began – ten years ago on Saturday.
This has included the likes of Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Chad Smith, Slayer’s Dave Lombardo, Guns N’ Roses’ Matt Sorum, Soundgarden and Pearl Jam’s Matt Cameron, Allison Miller and Mudhoney’s Dan Peters.
As the show celebrates this anniversary, Leiderman tells Deadline how this under-the-radar scheme came about and why...

Season 2 of the hit Netflix Addams Family series Wednesday is expected to start filming in Ireland (season 1 was shot in Romania) sometime in late April, and during an interview with Vanity Fair the show’s star Jenna Ortega confirmed that she is about to get ready to return to the world of Wednesday Addams, revealing that she has been reading the season scripts recently – and promising that every episode of the new season will have something that will make it stand out and be memorable.
Vanity Fair asked Ortega about a previous quote where she said Wednesday season 2 will be more episodic, with each episode coming off like a standalone movie, and that it would lean further into horror. She responded, “I’ve just been reading scripts. By the time we actually start shooting, it will have been over two years since we wrapped. So internally, mentally, I’m like,...

Hulu has canceled This Fool, the half-hour comedy set in working-class South Central Los Angeles written and executive produced by Chris Estrada, Pat Bishop, Jake Weisman and Matt Ingebretson.
The show centers on Julio Lopez (Estrada), a 30-year-old who still lives at home, has been dating his girlfriend (Michelle Ortiz) on and off since high school, and finds any excuse to avoid dealing with his own problems. He works at Hugs Not Thugs, a gang rehabilitation nonprofit, where he butts heads with his older cousin Luis (Frankie Quiñones), an ex-gang member who just got out of prison and moved in with Julio and his family.
Executive producers also included Jonathan Groff and Fred Armisen.
The second season of the Hulu Original series from ABC Signature consisted of 10 episodes. Both seasons will continue streaming on the platform.

This Fool’s days at Hulu have come to an end.
The Disney-owned streamer has opted to cancel This Fool after a two-season run, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. Chris Estrada created the series and starred as Julio Lopez, a 30-year-old who lives with his family and works at a gang rehab center.
Sources say This Fool will remain on Hulu’s platform after the streamer put a big marketing push behind both seasons of the series, which despite strong reviews, failed to find an audience large enough to justify a third season. Season two last aired in July 2023.
This Fool was produced in-house by Disney’s ABC Signature and was exec produced by Estrada, showrunner Jonathan Groff (Black-ish), Fred Armisen, Pat Bishop, Matt Ingebretson and Jake Weisman.
In an interview with TV’s Top 5, Estrada spoke of reuniting with the creators of Comedy Central’s Corporate for This Fool,...
