Emma Thompson is the two-time Oscar-winning multi-hyphenate who has left her indelible mark as an actress and a writer for more than 30 years. Let’s take a look back at 18 of her greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born on April 15, 1959, in Paddington, London, England, Thompson broke through with American audiences thanks to her Oscar-winning lead turn in the sumptuous Merchant-Ivory production “Howards End” (1992). She reunited with the filmmakers – along with her costar Anthony Hopkins – for “The Remains of the Day” (1993), which brought her a second Best Actress bid. That same year, she competed in the supporting category for “In the Name of the Father,” pulling off the rare feat of snagging two acting nominations in the same year. She returned to the Oscar race both as a performer and as a writer for the Jane Austin adaptation “Sense and Sensibility” (1995), for which she earned a Best Actress nomination...

Ang Lee is an Oscar-winning filmmaker who has worked in a variety of genres and styles to explore the lives of people around the globe. Let’s take a look back at 12 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in Taiwan in 1954, Lee’s interest in film brought him to NYU’s graduate program, where he worked as a crew member on classmate Spike Lee‘s thesis project, “Joe’s Bed-Stuy Barbershop: We Cut Heads.” He directed his first feature, “Pushing Hands” (1991) at the age of 37.
Lee followed up his debut with back-to-back international successes, each one scoring Oscar nominations as Best Foreign Language Film: “The Wedding Banquet” (1993) and “Eat Drink Man Woman” (1994). In both films, the director explored the kinds of complex familial relationships that would animate many of his stories.

It was a phone call from James Cameron that first gave a young Mia McKenna-Bruce the inspiration to act. Well, almost.
Having watched Titanic at home in London around the age of six, she says she was so “traumatized” by the film that she couldn’t sleep. After several weeks, her mum had the bright idea to get the film’s director to ring her up so he could explain over the phone to the terrified child that what she’d seen was just a movie, with people wearing costumes on a set. “And I was like, wait, this is a real job that you can do, and you can make people cry,” she recalls. As a hugely energetic and overdramatic youngster, McKenna-Bruce knew what she wanted to do with her life.
It would be several years later — after she’d landed her first professional job on the West End...

Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story is a series from Netflix directed by Tom Verica, starring India Ria Amarteifio y Golda Rosheuvel.
If you’re a fan, you’re going to love it. And if you are not, you will discover a wonderful fairy tale with an excellent production and a dynamic that, in our very humble opinion, surpasses the original series at the level of treatment.
Netflix has discovered a niche market (that’s its job), and it knows how to take advantage of it. This time it does it with a stylish spin-off, delving in a deeper story, full of humor and with the magnificent India Ria Amarteifio heading the cast and putting all the irony that the character requires.

British director Joe Wright, who helmed Winston Churchill drama “Darkest Hour” – which earned Gary Oldman an Oscar for his portrayal as the British prime minister – has now changed historical sides.
Wright is at Rome’s Cinecittà Studios shooting high-end TV drama “M. Son of the Century” which chronicles Benito Mussolini’s rise to power. A timely tale because, as he puts it: “Populist leaders are sprouting up all over the world.”
Aesthetically, the show will be “quite outlandish” with deeply saturated colors, punctuated by a “kind of techno score,” the director said during a recent set visit. Though “It’s not told in a vérité style,” Wright pointed out that “All the facts of what happened, they’re all there.”
Luca Marinelli plays Mussolini during the period between 1919, when he founded the fascist party in Italy, and 1925 when – having gained power with the 1922 March on Rome – Mussolini made an infamous...

"Hispanic people can be weird," Ana Fabrega tells Popsugar before Julio Torres chimes in with, "Hispanic people can be selfish and stupid. They need a voice, too." Fabrega and Torres, along with Fred Armisen, are the creators behind "Los Espookys," a decidedly odd Spanish-language comedy on HBO. Its second season debuted on Sept. 16 after a multiyear hiatus due to Covid. Fabrega, Torres, and Armisen all wrote and appear in the show, which follows a group of friends who set up a business to scare (or sometimes just provide otherworldly impressions) to their clients. The first season establishes the group, bringing them together and explaining the concept. The second is free of those obligations, giving its characters more room to breathe and explore the ridiculous and funny in their situations.

Fran Drescher has been elected president of SAG-AFTRA, in a narrow victory for the faction that has led the union for a dozen years.
Drescher defeated Matthew Modine, who ran on the rival Membership First slate, by a tally of 52.5% to 47.5%.
Meanwhile, Joely Fisher — who was Modine’s running mate on the Membership First slate — won the race for secretary-treasurer, defeating Drescher’s running mate, Anthony Rapp, by a margin of 57.7% to 42.3%.
Drescher will succeed Gabrielle Carteris, who has led the organization since 2016. Best known for her lead role on “The Nanny,” Drescher led the Unite for Strength slate, which has controlled the union since 2009 and is seen as the more moderate of the two factions that dominate the union’s internal politics.
In a campaign video, Drescher said she would bring “positivity and optimism” to her role as union president.

Updated with vote count and winners’ quotes: Fran Drescher has been elected president of SAG-AFTRA and, in a split decision, her opponent’s running mate, Joely Fisher, has been elected national secretary-treasurer. Drescher defeated Matthew Modine, who was making his second bid for the presidency, but her running mate, Anthony Rapp, lost to Fisher.
In a close race, Drescher defeated Modine 16,958 votes to 15,371, while Fisher beat Rapp 18,547 to 13,593. A total of 122,154 ballots were mailed and 32,362 were returned (26.49%). Turnout this year was considerably higher than two years ago, when only 21.2% of the members voted.
Fisher, the daughter of former SAG secretary-treasurer Connie Stevens, amassed nearly 1,600 more votes than Drescher.
Drescher said in a statement Thursday night:
“I am honored to serve my union in this capacity,” Drescher said in a statement. “Together we will navigate through these troubled times of global health crisis and together we will rise up out of...

SAG-AFTRA presidential candidate Matthew Modine says the union “cannot survive” two more years of the sacrifices that the current leadership has asked members to make and compared a vote for his rival Fran Drescher – who’s making her first run for union office – to a vote for a former U.S. president “who said he’d be great because he wasn’t a Beltway insider.” Drescher is running at the top of the ruling party’s Unite for Strength slate, and Modine is running as the head of the opposition party’s MembershipFirst slate. Election ballots will be mailed to members August 3 and counted September 2.
In a Q&a with Deadline, Modine, who was defeated by Gabrielle Carteris two years ago, also accused the union’s current leadership of having waged a “misleading propaganda campaign” to get SAG-AFTRA’s last film and TV contract ratified and promised to bring more...

Exclusive: Former SAG-AFTRA national secretary-treasurer Jane Austin, who finished third in the union’s presidential election two years ago, is throwing her support this time to presidential candidate Matthew Modine and his running mate Joely Fisher, who’s running for secretary-treasurer.
SAG-AFTRA has two main political factions – the Unite for Strength ruling party (and its Usan affiliate on the East Coast), which have been headed by SAG-AFTRA president Gabrielle Carteris – and the Membership First opposition party, which is headed by Modine. In the Netflix TV series “Bridgerton,” Regé-Jean Page plays Simon Basset, the Duke of Hastings, a throwback to previous heartthrobs in literature — ranging from Heathcliff in Emily Bronte’s “Wuthering Heights” to Mr. Darcy in Jane Austin’s “Pride and Prejudice.” But the 31-year-old actor didn’t want the character to be stuck in the past.
“And so, in carrying the torch, we need to make some ground with it,” Page tells “The Crown” star Emma Corrin in Variety’s Actors on Actors TV issue, on newsstands now. “Because Simon’s an archetype that already exists. He’s Darcy. He’s Heathcliff. He’s a tall, dark, brooding, emotionally stunted man.”
In building the character — based on Julia Quinn’s novels set in 1800s England — for modern audiences, Page tried to subvert previous tropes associated with toxic masculinity seen in literature.

Matthew Modine is running for president of SAG-AFTRA again as the leader of Membership First, the union’s opposition party. Joely Fisher, a former national board member, is running for secretary treasurer as his running mate.
Modine was defeated for the presidency by Gabrielle Carteris in a highly contentious election in 2019. In that race, Carteris received 13,537 votes to Modine’s 10,683, with a third candidate, former SAG-AFTRA secretary-treasurer Jane Austin, receiving 5,048 votes. Only 21.2% of the union’s eligible members cast ballots last time.

Two members of the SAG-AFTRA negotiating committee that bargained for the union’s recently ratified film and TV contract said tonight that they had not been told during the talks of the severity of the problems facing the SAG-AFTRA Health Plan.
The plan’s restructuring is projected to remove some 3,500 participants and 3,200 family members from coverage come Jan. 1 because they can’t meet the earnings requirements.
Jane Austin and Jodi Long told a virtual town hall that they’d heard inklings of trouble for the health plan last fall, but had no idea that it was this bad. They also said that they believe the union’s members would not have ratified the film and TV pact had they known the Plan was in such dire straits. This year, the Plan is projected to run a deficit of $141 million, which comes after a $50 million deficit last year and a $48 million deficit the year before.

With going to the police out of the question, the two women hilariously try to hide the body and shake the FBI. “All I can think about is movies that involve woodchippers or dissolving a body in a bathtub,” Jen says in a panic. British actor Colin Firth believes more celebrities should use their stardom to highlight good causes, especially the environment.
“I’m not against the idea of celebrities using what they have to raise awareness, " he said recently. “But you have to be very circumspect about how you employ it.”
Born in Hampshire, England, Firth has become the benchmark for the perfect English Gentleman in modern film, and is perhaps best known for his portrayal of Mr Darcy in Jane Austin’s Pride And Prejudice. It seems that for almost every role he takes on, from the almost tragically over-mothered Mark Darcy in Bridget Jones Diary to love-struck writer Jamie Bennett in Love Actually, female movie-goers fall over themselves to look up into his smoldering eyes.

The U.S. Department of Labor has denied all protests over the re-election of Gabrielle Carteris to the SAG-aftra presidency in August and will not a order a re-run of the contest.
Carteris won re-election last August over opponents Matthew Modine, Jane Austin, Queen Alljahye Searles and Abraham Justice and will remain the top elected officer of the performers union. Her re-appointment sparked protests over allegations that Carteris had improperly used SAG-aftra resources to promote her candidacy, as well as that two episodes of Fox’s spinoff “BH90210” — in which Carteris portrayed the president of a fictional actors union –had amounted to a “not-so-subtle national commercial” for the her campaign.

Adam Nelson, campaign manager for Matthew Modine in his failed bid for SAG-AFTRA President, filed a federal complaint with the U.S. Department of Labor alleging multiple labor code violations by guild president Gabrielle Carteris.
The complaint accuses Carteris and her campaign of more than a dozen violations of Title IV of the Labor Management Reporting and Disclosure Act, which outlines labor laws concerning union elections. Carteris won last month’s guild election by a significant margin, earning 44% of the vote with 13,537 votes. Modine received 10,682 votes, with 5,048 for Jane Austin; 1,096 for Queen Alljahye Searles and 367 for Abraham Justice.
Nelson’s complaints were initially sent to SAG-aftra’s national election committee, along with those from 13 other union members; but all protests were dismissed. Now, making good on threats of Labor Department appeals made during the election, several supporters of Modine and the Membership First slate are turning to Labor Sec.

Several protests have been filed challenging the validity of SAG-AFTRA’s recent presidential election, in which incumbent Gabrielle Carteris handily defeated opponents including runners-up Matthew Modine and Jane Austin.
One of the challenges, filed Tuesday by Brian Hamilton, a founder of Membership First, claims that Fox’s current series BH90210 was “a not-so-subtle national commercial” for Carteris’ re-election campaign. The series, which premiered August 7 – nine days after election ballots were mailed to union members – is a reboot of the original Beverly Hills, 90210 featuring cast members, now all grown up, playing fictionalized versions of their real-life selves struggling to get the reboot produced.
The election challenge notes that Carteris, one of the show’s executive producers, plays the “hard-working and concerned” president of the fictionalized “Actors Guild of America.” She and the other leading characters all go by their real-life first names – not the names of the characters they played in the original show.

Gabrielle Carteris Re-Elected President of SAG-AFTRA, But “Loyal Opposition” Makes Major Gains In La
Update: SAG-AFTRA presidential candidate Matthew Modine has conceded defeat, sort of. The election was marred by some mudslinging from each side, and in a statement Modine appears to be keeping options open if the election is scrutinized.

I congratulate all of our MembershipFirst candidates on winning important victories tonight. Each will be instrumental in forming a more perfect union. Carteris won handily with 13,537 votes, or 44% of ballots cast, to 10,682 for Modine and 5,048 for Jane Austin, 1,096 for Queen Alljahye Searles and 367 for Abraham Justice.
The results were announced early Thursday morning at 4 a.m. following one of the most bitter election campaigns in memory, including multiple accusations of misconduct.
Camryn Manheim won the secretary-treasurer post with 16,047 votes, or 53%, as Carteris’ running mate. Matthew Modine has been accused by SAG-AFTRA president Gabrielle Carteris of violating federal laws in his campaign to unseat Carteris.
The production of three campaign videos for Modine by the for-profit New York Film Academy — on whose board Modine sits — has been blasted by Carteris for alleged violations of federal labor law prohibiting union candidates from accepting contributions from any employer.
SAG-aftra’s election rules, sent out before every election, say, “The prohibition on employer contributions extends to every employer, regardless of the nature of the business or whether any union represents its employees.”
The videos were produced at no cost to Modine, who narrated and highlighted the contributions of stunt performers, background performers, singers and dancers. They’ve since been removed from Modine and the Nyfa’s website.
“These aren’t just flagrant violations of our union election rules, but of federal labor law as well,” Carteris said.

More than 100 women, including Ellen Barkin and Allison Janney, have voiced support for Matthew Modine’s campaign for SAG-AFTRA presidency, following a joke at a SAG-aftra meeting that some decried as misogynist.
With voting set to conclude on Aug. 28, the campaigns have featured vitriolic attacks between supporters of Modine, secretary-treasurer Jane Austin and incumbent president Gabrielle Carteris for several weeks.
The latest incident took place on Aug. 16 at a town hall meeting featuring Austin, Carteris and Modine, organized by the UnionWorking group. During the Q&a portion, Modine responded with a joke when asked why he’s the best choice by saying, “Because I’m the only man running…?”
Modine then explained that he was the only man who had been invited to participate in the town hall. Two other candidates – Abraham Justice and Queen Alljahye Searles – were not invited by the organizers.

The three leading candidates for president of SAG-AFTRA spoke Thursday night at a members-only town hall meeting at the Faith Presbyterian Church in Valley Village. The event was sponsored by UnionWorking, a grassroots organization that seeks to “stem the tide of union busting.” About 150 SAG-aftra members attended, many of whom were also candidates running for various guild offices and board seats.
“It was terrific to have a thoughtful discussion of the important issues our members are facing,” said incumbent and frontrunner Gabrielle Carteris, who’s running on the Unite for Strength slate. “I thank UnionWorking for providing the opportunity, and I’m especially grateful to the members for coming out to participate. As I said during my remarks tonight, when I look back over the last few years, I am extremely proud that we have made real gains in key areas. And I mean we. I did not do it alone.

Frances Fisher is asking for Donald Trump’s vote. Fisher, a progressive Democrat who’s called Trump “the worst bully in the world,” tweeted out to the president, tongue in cheek, asking him to vote for her Membership First slate in SAG-AFTRA’s ongoing elections.
“We have Republicans; we have Democrats; we have independents in our union,” she told Deadline. “National politics is one thing, union politics is another. Every union member has an obligation to vote.”
Fisher is running for vice president of the guild’s Los Angeles local and for seats on the union’s national and local boards. The Membership First slate is headed by presidential candidate Matthew Modine, who’s seeking to unseat incumbent Gabrielle Carteris, the leader of the Unite for Strength ticket. Jane Austin, the union’s national secretary-treasurer, is also running for president as an independent candidate.
“We have Republicans; we have Democrats; we have independents in our union,” she told Deadline. “National politics is one thing, union politics is another. Every union member has an obligation to vote.”

SAG-AFTRA’s funds held in trust for others have increased by 6.6% to $214.8 million since last year, according to the union’s latest filing with the federal government.
Those funds have been at the center of a long-running dispute, dating back to a 2007 suit filed by Ken Osmond (“Leave It to Beaver”) over how foreign levies are handled by the union. Osmond settled his suit in 2011.
The disclosure of the increase came in the July 29 filing of SAG-aftra’s report with the U.S. Department of Labor for the fiscal year that ended on April 30 in the category of “funds held in trust for others.”
Last year’s report showed a 9.4% hike to $201.5 million and the 2017 report showed a 7.1% hike to $183.9 million in funds held for others. The 2016 report showed a 4.5% gain in the funds to $171.4 million; the 2015 report showed a 7.5% hike to $164.3 million; and the 2014 report listed those funds at $153.04 million,...

As SAG-AFTRA’s two factions threaten to fracture the guild further – now they’re threatening to see each other – independent presidential candidate Jane Austin has embarked on a campaign to unify the 160,000-member union in advance of next year’s negotiations for a new film and TV contract.
Saying that “the two-party slate system represents an antiquated system that no longer effectively serves the interests of the membership,” Austin now is rolling out her endorsements for board candidates from both parties – incumbent president Gabrielle Carteris’ Unite for Strength slate and challenger Matthew Modine’s Membership First opposition slate. Austin, currently the guild’s national secretary-treasurer, was elected to that post two years ago on the Membership First slate.
“Based on the board candidates’ statements, and my experience working with them, I’ve chosen to support these specific candidates no matter what slate they’re on because I know...

SAG-AFTRA president Gabrielle Carteris and seven of her supporters are threatening to file a lawsuit against their opponents over recent allegations of misconduct by Carteris.
United Screen Actors Nationwide, which endorses Carteris, issued the threat Thursday against presidential challenger Matthew Modine and 19 of his allies running on the Membership First slate, including Ed Asner, Diane Ladd, Jonathan Taylor Thomas and Martin Sheen.
Pamela Jeffrey of the New York firm of Levy Ratner wrote a cease-and-desist letter in response to a July 29 threat from attorney Robert Allen to file a lawsuit on behalf of unnamed members if Carteris was not removed from the ballot. Allen accused Carteris of allegedly using insider information to take credit for SAG-aftra’s new deal with Netflix and alleged that she has been using union resources to promote her candidacy via official SAG-aftra videos.

Exclusive: SAG-AFTRA presidential candidate Jane Austin, who’s currently the guild’s national secretary-treasurer, has a plan to fix the union. She tells Deadline that SAG-AFTRA “has lost its way in its core mission – to serve and protect the needs of the entire membership, all 25 locals, all categories, so they can earn a living wage. As president, I would have the experience, the mandate, and the independence to get my union back on course.”
Austin, who’s running as an independent candidate, will face SAG-aftra president Gabrielle Carteris, who’s running on the Unite for Strength slate, and Matthew Modine, who is running on the Membership First slate. Ballots will be mailed out July 29 and will be counted August 28.

Actress and union activist Jodi Long is running for the office SAG-AFTRA national secretary-treasurer on the Membership First slate headed by presidential candidate Matthew Modine.
Long, a member of the guild’s national board, will be squaring off in the upcoming election against Camryn Manheim, who’s running on President Gabrielle Carteris’ Unite for Strength slate, and independent candidate Chuck Slavin. The union’s top elected financial post is currently held by Jane Austin, who’s running for president as an independent.
“Game-changing technology in our industry requires foresight,” Long said in her first campaign statement. “Matthew Modine and our Membership First slate possess the vision and the fortitude to excel. Whether it’s the tough job of negotiating new contracts, implementing innovative solutions within an ever-changing landscape, or ensuring membership — and the next generation — enjoy the very same benefits our former union brethren had the foresight to set in place.
