Film score composer Hans Zimmer boasts a discography that’s nothing short of legendary. A Grammy-winning artist behind some of the most iconic movie soundtracks, including astonishing titles like Interstellar, Inception, Dune, The Dark Knight, Blade Runner 2049, and so much more, Zimmer has become indelible to the framework of cinematic music.
Among his countless endeavors, one resulted from a complete accident.
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)
And not just that, Zimmer had thought that the pursuit at its nascent was the ‘worst idea’ he heard at the time. So, then, what led him into the world of Johnny Depp’s Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl? He recounted his experience with Gore Verbinski’s Disneyland attraction-inspired movie as he looked back on his decorated career.

It’s a case of one score to rule them all, as Howard Shore’s stirring epic soundtrack for The Lord of the Rings trilogy was voted the U.K.’s favorite movie music.
Shore’s score for the Rings film, which has won three Academy Awards, three Golden Globes and four Grammys, came out ahead of some of the greatest and most recognizable soundtracks of all time, including John Williams’ music for Schindler’s List and Star Wars, which came second and third respectively.
The list of the top 100 film scores was compiled by popular U.K. radio station Classic FM, as part of their annual Movie Music Hall of Fame. More than 10,000 people voted for this year’s edition and the winner was revealed on Sunday by Jonathan Ross, the former presenter of the BBC’s Film program.

Filmhub, which bills itself as a Substack-like solution for independent filmmakers looking to profit from streaming without forfeiting rights to their work, has raised a $6.8 million seed funding round.
The round was led by a16z and included the participation of 8Vc, FundersClub, Eleven Prime and several individual investors working in the tech sector.
Along with the fresh resources, Filmhub said it is launching a new partnership with streaming service Struum, a neo-bundle founded by a group of former Disney and Discovery execs. The teaming is centered on this month’s Slamdance FIlm Festival and will look to support and provide enhanced financial opportunities for filmmakers.
Founded in 2016, Filmhub relies on the assumption that streaming is going to continue to reorder the traditional film business. While a tiny fraction of emerging filmmakers still manage to nab splashy acquisition deals and gain marketing and distribution, the vast majority don’t. In addition,...

In an age where special effects reign supreme, there’s one aspect of the filmmaking process that hasn’t gone through a radical transformation — music. Some of the best movies in any given year would be sorely lacking without their memorable scores, and this has remained true well into the first two decades of the 21st century.

Film composers play an integral part in the filmmaking process, and there are a handful whose bodies of work stand out in recent years. Sony Classical proudly announces the release of The Dark Tower (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) featuring the music of the prolific Dutch composer Tom Holkenborg. The soundtrack will be released digitally on July 28 and on CD on August 4. The movie opens in theaters nationwide on August 4.
About the film and soundtrack, Tom Holkenborg says: “Dark Tower is an incredible mix of horror, fantasy and western, it inhabits a unique and singular world, human and personal, yet also other, and the score had to try and reflect this. It was a fascinating project to work on, and an honor trying to score the words and imagination of the great Stephen King.”
There are other worlds than these. Stephen King’s The Dark Tower, the ambitious and expansive story from one of the world’s most celebrated authors, makes its launch to the big screen.

Nicole Kidman and director Werner Herzog bring to life the true story of a trailblazing woman who found freedom in the Middle East. Gertrude Bell (Kidman) leaves behind her buttoned-up life in England for Tehran. Her excursion across the post-World War I Middle East takes her from finding love with a British officer (James Franco), and an encounter with the legendary T.E. Lawrence (Robert Pattinson) – the character that inspired the film Lawrence Of Arabia. While that previous cinematic classic that will come to mind several times while watching this one, the nostalgia doesn’t help matters across this long desert trip.
Nicole Kidman lends the famous traveler, writer, and cartographer just the right amount of spitfire and gumption, especially towards the beginning of the film – she looks towards the heavens and wishes for an earthquake to take her away from a lavish party that she doesn’t want to be attending.

'Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl': Johnny Depp as Capt. Jack Sparrow. 'Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl' review: Mostly an enjoyable romp (Oscar Movie Series) Pirate movies were a Hollywood staple for about three decades, from the mid-'20s (The Sea Hawk, The Black Pirate) to the mid-to-late '50s (Moonfleet, The Buccaneer), when the genre, by then mostly relegated to B films, began to die down. Sporadic resurrections in the '80s and '90s turned out to be critical and commercial bombs (Pirates, Cutthroat Island), something that didn't bode well for the Walt Disney Company's $140 million-budgeted film "adaptation" of one of their theme-park rides. But Neptune's mood has apparently improved with the arrival of the new century. He smiled – grinned would be a more appropriate word – on the Gore Verbinski-directed Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl,...

When it comes to the musical score of a film, there’s nothing more important than the main theme. It’s the audible hook that will subtly grab the attention of the audience, making sure that they’ll be humming it inside their head for weeks to come. Themes like Star Wars or Superman all have a primal connection to the mind of the viewer, creating an understated link between the film and its audience.
We’ve all heard great themes over the years, whether it was coming out of The Lord of the Rings with Howard Shore’s signature theme in your head or feeling as superheroic as ever when you heard Alan Silvestri’s landmark theme for Captain America: The First Avenger. A great movie theme will stay with you long after you’ve seen the film, bought the DVD and watched it again.

Hans Zimmer's roaring orchestral scores have provided the soundtrack to countless Hollywood hits over the past 25 years, and the German-born composer returns to our eardrums this week with the release of The Lone Ranger.
His take on the classic William Tell Overture is perhaps the best thing in the movie and worth the price of admission alone (did you know he also redid themes from Thunderbirds and The Simpsons?)
Digital Spy celebrates the ubiquitous Zimmer's honking great film scores with 10 of his best below...
True Romance (1993)
Tony Scott's lovers on the lam picture featured a razor-sharp script from then-newcomer Quentin Tarantino and Zimmer's 'You're So Cool', his version of Badlands's Carl Orff theme 'Gassenhauer'.
The Lion King (1994)
Elton John and Tim Rice provided songs and lyrics for Disney's sweeping epic, but it was Zimmer's music that helped stir the emotions for Simba's journey to the head of the pride.

Spoilers ahead. Two more dancers have left the competition after tonight’s performance show, which featured guest judge Kenny Ortega, some incredible duets, and plenty of side-eye from me re: the elimination process. I’ll post my full recap of tonight’s performances later on; in the meantime, discuss!
Malece Miller and Alan Bersten have been eliminated. What? Nigel Lythgoe attempted to soften this blow (?!) by suggesting that they try (try!!) to join the Top 10 tour anyway, as swing dancers or alternates. As If He Isn’T In Charge Of All Of This.

There's a certain momentum gathering behind the re-appraisal of old movie scores. John Wilson has gained credit for his diligent reconstructions of classic Hollywood soundtracks, and now the National Youth Orchestra has chosen to lead its spring programme with Erich Korngold's accompaniment to the 1935 pirate adventure Captain Blood.
The buccaneering score established Korngold as the Errol Flynn of studio composers, though, as was standard practice at the time, once the footage was in the can, the full score went in the bin. The Nyo performed a 20-minute suite by John Morgan woven together from surviving parts. The stirring Captain Blood theme felt strong enough to sustain an entire symphony; though whether the teenage generation of 2091 will be playing Klaus Badelt's music for the Pirates of the Caribbean remains to be seen.
Had Stravinsky had his way, we might also be celebrating his movie soundtracks; but, arriving in...

After being kept from North American theater screens for years now (for reasons unbeknownst even to director Michael J. Bassett) Solomon Kane, the adaptation of Robert E. Howard’s pulp-Puritan magazine stories from the early 1900’s has finally been awarded a release. For the most part, this grungy period epic both subverts and embraces its roots admirably, failing mainly when it begins to ponder and attempt the philosophical.
Starring James Purefoy who is best known for his stellar work as Mark Anthony on HBO’s Rome, Solomon Kane takes us on a bittersweet journey of redemption across mid-level Britain as a dark force led by the sorcerer Malachi is recruiting the strong, enslaving the weak and slaughtering anyone in between.
As is the case in both the source material and this adaptation, Howard tells a tale of Earth in the 1600’s where black magic is very real and even more...

A new moon is rising as the pack is back, and they are ready to unleash terror to your DVD or Blu-ray players in October.
Anchor Bay Entertainment will be releasing The Howling Reborn on October 18th, on DVD and Blu-ray, just in time for Halloween.
According to Anchor Bay, the new original chapter in The Howling series directed by Joe Nimziki is described as being "Twilight with bite". I'm not sure if that's a great angle to market a horror film with, but it is what it is. There is romance and gore in The Howling Reborn, and those combinations are typically welcome as a formula in a horror film.
The features on the Blu-ray and DVD release will include filmmakers’ commentary and a behind-the-scenes featurette. It will be interesting to see if they show some of the creature designs and concepts in the featurette.

The Howling has always played second fiddle to John Landis’ remarkable “An American Werewolf In London” in the battle for lycanthrope supremacy, at least in my eyes. I do, however, acknowledge it’s deserved spot in cinematic history. It was released at a time, not unlike today, where the werewolf film was practically non-existent. It was a solid, creepy, atmospheric take on the classic movie monster. A plethora of sub-par sequels have been released since, none of which managed to be as entertaining as the original. Anchor Bay will be unleashing yet another straight to video sequel, on Blu-Ray and DVD October 18th. If I’m being totally honest, a quick glance at the trailer leads me to believe that this will be the worst sequel yet. I’ll watch it though, and keep my fingers crossed that I’ll be proven wrong. Below you can find the trailer, and disc details.

Point Blank is a violent, adrenaline-charged French chase thriller that, thanks to fast-paced direction by Fred Cavaye, sharp editing and a driving score by Klaus Badelt, never slows down for one of its 85 minutes. It a barrels along at such breakneck speed that you barely have time to catch your breath let alone focus on some of the ridiculous plot holes and leaps of credibility (the type of convoluted plot mechanics that are, for some reason, more forgivable in European films and I suspect will seem even less plausible in the inevitable Hollywood remake). Gilles Lellouche plays Samuel, a conscientious nursing aide working in a Paris hospital treating a patient named Sartet (Roschdy Zem), plowed down by a motorcycle while being chased by two men in the opening sequence. One night a man tries to kill Sartet but Samuel manages to save his life. Soon after he gets home and...

Are you actually excited about “Transformers 3” or are you mostly just interested in seeing if Michael Bay’s new lingerie model can act better than the last one?...

You know it when you hear it. Or maybe you don’t. But go back, listen again. The music of the movies make images sing, and the maestros behind the notes never get the credit they deserve. Imagine Jaws without those two notes, Jurassic Park without its theme. Steven Spielberg owes most of his best cinematic moments to John Williams.
As do many great filmmakers to many other, lesser-known music makers. But what about those who’ve made not-so-great films that are blessed with scores that belong in something better?
Unsung notes and strings and orchestras, tonight we honor you.
Runner-Up:
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, Constantine - Klaus Badelt
Check out the Top 15 below, in no particular order:
The Matrix Reloaded/The Matrix Revolutions – Don Davis
A post-modern score for a post-modern trilogy, the former of which holds of up much better than the latter.

Presumably, Werner Herzog needs no introduction. Like an atmospheric phenomenon or a law of physics, the German filmmaker has been some kind of constant for over more than four decades of world cinema. That he continues to be a major presence in the world of film -- churning out both documentaries and narrative features with supernatural regularity - certainly speaks to his uncompromising nature. But it also speaks to his adaptability - the same guy who made deranged German jungle adventures with Klaus Kinski is now making deranged American cop flicks with Nicolas Cage.
With the upcoming DVD release of his striking, impossibly strange thriller "My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done," in which Michael Shannon plays an actor whose experiences with the far edge of civilization cause him to go mad and kill his mother with a sword, Herzog continues his exploration of the ways that myth and...

Jean Reno stars in this revenge thriller from the producers of Taken. But is it as good as its tenuous Luc Besson connections imply? Duncan finds out…
Two years ago, I leapt at the opportunity to review Taken, based mainly on my love for Liam Neeson and revenge films in general, and I absolutely adored the end result. Looking back, I think it's safe to say that Mad Max was the first film of that kind I'd ever seen, starting a lifelong passion for the wronged hero seeking vengeance in all kinds of unethical and violent ways.
Like any genre, the offerings can be a mixed batch. The last decade has provided some films that are now firm favourites, such as Denzel Washington's superb Man On Fire and the Jim Caviezel/Guy Pearce version of The Count Of Monte Cristo (which I'll mention any chance I get), while the...

Jon posted the news that Johnny Depp invaded Comic-Con dressed in his Jack Sparrow best to deliver the news that we all knew already, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is on the way! The footage was shown in 3d to the Comic Con crowed and they’ve now released the 2d version.
It’s great to see Depp dressed up as Sparrow again though with the awesome Klaus Badelt score in the background! Man, I love that score!! During the footage, Sparrow gave us some more idea on the plotline which I think we knew much of already stating:
You may have heard whisperings and rumours that Captain Jack Sparrow be recruiting a crew, to undertake a voyage to the fountain of youth – Not true! Course not!
But even if it weren’t not true, you wouldn’t be interested in joining me would you!?
I do admit,...
