Following a year-long US tour, Trevor Noah is releasing his long-awaited Netflix comedy special this month — and the first trailer arrived on Monday, just hours after the special was nominated for a Golden Globe Award. Trevor Noah: Where Was I premieres Dec. 19 and marks Noah’s fourth comedy special on the streamer. Filmed at the Fox Theater in Detroit, the special delves into foreign national anthems and the cultural norms Noah experienced during his globetrotting ventures.

Trevor Noah left The Daily Show, but he had no plans of slowing down.
In fact, within weeks of wrapping his seven-year run in December, he kicked off a still-ongoing, global stand-up tour, which he titled his Off the Record Tour. Now, Noah is making that set available as his latest Netflix special, which will roll out on the service Dec. 19.
The hour, Where Was I, has Noah sharing his comical experiences from his recent travels, which range from foreign national anthems to varying cultural norms. The David Paul Meyer-directed special was filmed at the Fox Theatre in Detroit and marks Noah’s fourth for the service. (Earlier entries included I Wish You Would, Son of Patricia and Afraid of the Dark.) Noah served as executive producer on the series alongside his team, Sanaz Yamin, Bob Bain, Norman Aladjem and Derek Van Pelt.

The eighth annual Critics Choice Documentary Awards nominations are often an early bellwether for the Best Documentary Feature Oscar race, mainly because they signal to Oscar voters many of the key films they should not miss. Last year’s winner, “Good Night Oppy,” did not make it to the documentary Oscar shortlist, but the year before, “Summer of Soul” went on to win the Oscar.
This year’s nominations were led by fall festival favorite “American Symphony,” Matthew Heineman’s moving portrait of musician Jon Batiste as he juggles work demands and his wife’s recurring leukemia, with six nods. It was followed by Mstyslav Chernov’s Ukraine international Oscar submission “20 Days in Mariupol,” D. Smith’s black-and-white portrait of Black trans sex workers “Kokomo City,” and Davis Guggenheim’s editing feat “Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie,” with five each.

Matthew Heineman’s documentary profiling Grammy and Oscar winning musician Jon Batiste and the medical struggles for his wife that have marked trying times in their marriage leads the pack of nominees for the 8th Annual Critics Choice Documentary Awards with six. The inspiring docu from Barack and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground was picked up by Netflix after premiering and winning acclaim at the Telluride Film Festival last month. Not far behind are a trio of docus each with 5 mentions including 20 Days In Mariupol, Kokomo City, and Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie. And not to be ignored, this weekend’s boxoffice champ, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour which landed a nomination as Best Music Documentary. The Ccda nod marks the first awards recognition for the film (however it is not eligible for a Documentary Oscar) which only just had its first premiere screening on Wednesday of last...

Kvea is clearly doing something right. The Telemundo-owned Los Angeles station, part of a duopoly with sister NBC outlet Knbc, swept this year’s key newscast categories at the 75th Los Angeles Area Emmy Awards. The Spanish language station dominated the evening, winning the Emmys for evening (7 p.m. to 12 a.m.), daytime (11 a.m. to 7 p.m.) and morning (4 a.m. to 11 a.m.) newscasts.
Kvea had won the daytime newscast Emmy last year as well.
Overall, Kvea earned eight L.A. Area Emmy awards this year, tied with local public broadcaster Kcet. (That was also up from Kcet’s haul of six last year.) Given the tie with Kvea, that still preserves Kcet’s streak of this being the seventh year in a row that Kcet won the most.
The Kcbs/Kcal duopoly was next in line, with four wins, while ABC-owned Kabc and cabler Spectrum SportsNet LA were next with three.

Netflix is taking the early lead at this year’s Emmys race, with six wins, thanks to the Television Academy’s juried award winners for animation, choreography, interactive programming and motion design, which were announced on Friday.
The outstanding individual achievement in animation category, a “juried” prize that means several, one or no winners could be named, wound up with eight honorees this year: Five from Netflix and three from YouTube.
Also landing its first-ever Emmy was Twitch, the live streaming platform popular in the gaming community and owned by Amazon. Twitch landed an Emmy for outstanding innovation in interactive media, for “Artificial.”
The CW, which is often snubbed by the Academy in general nominations, is the first linear network out the gate with an Emmy: “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” won the first-ever juried prize for outstanding choreography for scripted programming. Choreographer Kathryn Burns won the award, making it her second Emmy.

Another year, another awards show. I hope you tuned in to the Critics’ Choice Television Awards, because it was a pretty fantastic event. Again, not all of my votes ended up for the winners, and a few of them seem a little questionable to me, but that’s the nature of the beast.
I’m curious where you fit in though. Did the right shows win? Were the right shows even nominated? There were some surprises, like Orphan Black taking home a prize, and there were some obvious choices as well. How’s the mix work for you? By the way, the surprise is only by way of it being a small show with a sci-fi angle, not because it didn’t deserve the win. I mean, that’s a different question…

Well, not everything went exactly as my nomination votes would have indicated, which is how it should be, but the nominations for the first Critics' Choice Television Awards are here.
ABC is going to love the fact that they received the most nominations, but let's keep that in perspective, because Modern Family received six of those sixteen nods. And, while there might be strong overall numbers for the big networks, cable actually seems to dominate the list. For example, only two of the ten nominees for Best Drama Series are on "regular" television, and three of them are on AMC. No one nominated for Best Actor in a Drama Series is on "regular" television.
The nominations are definitely interesting.
Take a look and let me know your thoughts. How did your favorite shows stack up?
