When the 77th Tony Awards nominations are announced this morning, those honored with recognition will have been selected by a small group of theatre professionals who commit to seeing each and every eligible production that opened during the 2023-2024 season. They are thus able to make informed decisions on what shows, performers and creatives should earn the spotlight of New York theatre’s top honor.
This past season, 60 theatre professionals saw all 36 eligible musicals, play, and revivals and will select the nominees in 26 competitive categories.
Below, see a complete list of the 2023-2024 Tony Awards nominating committee members, including their professions plus past Tony nominations and wins. Some of these nominators may have to recuse themselves prior to voting if they have a conflict, such as if a production that they worked is eligible for a nomination this year.

Joe Flaherty, founding member of “Sctv” and ubiquitous comic actor for decades including a stint as the Dad on “Freaks and Geeks,” has died at the age of 82, according to multiple reports.
The Pittsburgh-born performer (a rare American in the Canadian comedy sphere) got his start with the Chicago-based Second City Theater, first appearing on the “National Lampoon Radio Hour” before resettling in Toronto to become part of Second City’s core in the Great White North. He was one of the initial writer/performers on “Sctv,” a vanguard sketch comedy series co-starring John Candy, Eugene Levy, Andrea Martin, Rick Moranis, Catherine O’Hara, Harold Ramis (for a little while), Dave Thomas, and, later, Martin Short, that mixed parody programming with behind-the-scenes shenanigans at a low rent television station in “Mellonville.” Indeed, if “Sctv” could be said to have a main character, it would be Flaherty’s Guy Caballero, the corrupt,...

Ted Lasso creators Jason Sudeikis and Brendan Hunt were baffled by Joy Behar’s claim that she was offered a role in season three of the Apple TV series.
Speaking with People Magazine during a panel at a pre-Emmys event on Thursday night, the co-creators expressed their surprise when asked about Behar’s assertion. “I, no. Joy Behar from The View?” Sudeikis asked. As Hunt added: “Respectfully, it would be news to us. We just work there.”

Joy was offered the role of Jason Sudeikis‘ titular character’s mom Dottie Lasso.
“You were contacted about the possibility to be on my favorite show of all time,” The View producer Brian Teta brought up, before asserting that Joy “quickly dismissed” the role.
“You were dismissive of it because it would require you to spend your hiatus in London,” Ted continued, which Joy confirmed.

81-year-old Joy Behar said Wednesday on the talk show’s Behind the Table podcast that she rejected the opportunity to play Ted Lasso’s mom in season 3.
By doing so, she gave up a role that scored actress Becky Ann Baker an Emmy nomination.
“You were contacted about the possibility to be on my favorite show of all time,” View producer Brian Teta said on the podcast. “You were dismissive of it because it would require you to spend your hiatus in London,” Teta added.
Behar blamed the unseasonable weather in the UK.
“It was too hot, you remember? There was a heat wave going on at that time, like, 100-degree weather, and I’d have to get on a plane and go in the middle of the heat? No,” Behar said. “Listen, I’m a writer, I write my own stuff, I don’t care about other people’s stuff.

“Ted Lasso” is on track to win its third Emmy in a row for Best Comedy Series, per Gold Derby’s racetrack odds. Apple TV Plus’ feel-good show topped all other laffers this year with a whopping 21 Emmy nominations (see below), just one shy of the comedy record set by “30 Rock” in 2009. Fun fact: if “Ted Lasso” goes on to win trophy #3 this September, it’d be only the seventh comedy in Emmy history to prevail for its first three seasons on the air.
The most recent time this rare feat occurred was for “Modern Family,” which actually won five times consecutively (2010-14). Before that was “30 Rock” (first three seasons in 2007-09), “Frasier” (first five seasons in 1994-98), “Taxi” (first three seasons in 1979-81), “All in the Family” and “The Phil Silvers Show” (first three seasons in 1956-58).

Phil Dunster had an ace of a day on July 12. Not only did he score his first Emmy nomination — a best supporting actor nod for his work as cocky-turned-compassionate footballer Jamie Tartt on Apple TV+’s Ted Lasso — but the 31-year-old also toasted his good fortune by watching Grand Slam action at the All England Club.
“I’m looking over the courts now,” Dunster says as he surveys the scene during the men’s and women’s quarterfinal matches at Wimbledon as his brain volleys back and forth in an attempt to process the news on the eve of the SAG-AFTRA strike, which was called two days after this chat. “It’s an amazing day — and also quite a confusing day in the land of all things acting and the industry.”

Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers for “Succession,” “The Last of Us” and “Ted Lasso.”
“Choose wisely, for while the true Grail will bring you life; the false Grail will take it from you.”
This quote from “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade” (1989) could also apply to selecting episode submissions for the Primetime Emmy Awards. Some choose well, others not so much.
Per Emmy rules, after the nominations are officially announced, the selections for drama series and comedy series each choose six episodes that best exhibit the very best of their nominated seasons. This contrasts with directors and writers, who make their picks before the phase one voting period.
One of the most interesting observations about this year’s submissions surrounds the fourth and final season of HBO’s “Succession.” The third episode, “Connor’s Wedding,” which many called one of the best episodes of the series (and television at...

After doing a lot of work in the comedy genre – Brooklyn Nine-Nine, The State, Viva Variety, Upright Citizens Brigade, Wet Hot American Summer, Reno 911!, Superbad, Pineapple Express, Paul, Role Models, Wanderlust, I Love You, Man… the list is long – Joe Lo Truglio has decided to make his feature directorial debut with a horror film called Outpost. The Little Show That Could did on Wednesday morning as the Amazon Freevee word-of-mouth sensation “Jury Duty” completed the most improbable run for top comedy series in recent memory (if not ever) by landing a spot among the big boys and girls – becoming the Andrea Riseborough of this Emmy season. Moreover, its its “star” James Marsden generated an equally surprising achievement with a supporting comedy actor nod today.
As recently as late June, “Jury Duty” stood 17th in the Gold Derby combined odds for top comedy series at 100/1. Its final odds placed at only 13th, still at 100/1. But the show that premiered in April on a streaming service few had even heard of made waves even immediately and kept right on making them through this wildly unlikely grassroots Emmy run. It was described as the world’s first feelgood prank show – “The Office” meets “The Truman Show.” The premise: A...

Sometimes, Emmy voters are a sentimental bunch after all. With so many beloved series bidding farewell this season, the nominators could have had a challenge in ensuring that they really did fete a lot of departing shows, but they did just that when the nominations were unveiled for the 75th annual Emmy Awards this morning.
Leading the pack for its final season is HBO’s “Succession,” with a whopping 27 nominations, a tally that bests its total last year of 25. An unbelievable 14 performers earned recognition including lead actors Brian Cox, Kieran Culkin, and Jeremy Strong, lead actress Sarah Snook, five supporting performers, and five guest performers. Its humongous nominations haul also includes bids for drama series, three for directing, and one in writing for Jesse Armstrong.

Television fans were surprised to see fan-favorite stars like the cast of "The House of the Dragon" passed over for nominations, however. Other snubs included Selena Gomez and Steve Martin for "Only Murders in the Building."

This season, the Emmy Awards celebrates its 75th anniversary. What began as a modest ceremony with five awards at the Hollywood Athletic Club has evolved into television’s biggest night, celebrating excellence throughout the industry. In the age of “peak TV” with close to 600 original scripted series, the nominations recognize the importance of the writers, performers and all those who worked on television programs in the past year.

The Tony Awards has added new members to its nominating committee, including Ain’t No Mo star and playwright Jordan E. Cooper and Kpop composer Helen Park, who have both been outspoken about the need for change within the industry.
Other new members joining for the 2023-2024 Broadway season include The Greatest Showman and Dear Evan Hansen songwriter Benj Pasek, actor Bob Balaban, actor and playwright Adam Chanler-Berat, interdisciplinary artist Ty Defoe and director Miranda Haymon.
The Tony Awards nominating committee is typically younger and more diverse than the larger Tony Awards voting body. However, the addition of Cooper and Park is particularly notable, as both had shows this past season that posted early closing notices and have spoken out about the need for Broadway to improve how it markets to and welcomes diverse audiences (Kpop is about competing Korean pop bands, while Ain’t No Mo’ follows a series...

In the penultimate episode of “Ted Lasso” season 3, “Mom City” features Sam Ryder’s song “Fought & Lost” co-written with Tom Howe, Jamie Hartman and Ryder.
Playing toward the end of the episode, the song acts as a bridge as Ted (Jason Sudeikis) as he has a heartfelt confrontation with his mother Dottie (Becky Ann Baker). The next day, he’s in his office to reveal a “truth bomb” to Rebecca, but the end credits roll before audiences get an answer.
Ryder performed the piece in front of an audience at the Grammy Museum in Downtown Los Angeles at a special event with the show’s star Hannah Waddingham joining him.
Of the show’s music overall, music supervisor Tony Von Pervieux says, ““Because you got to sell a song. There are a lot of times that a song works for the scene, but maybe someone doesn’t put it in correctly,...

Spoiler Alert: This review contains spoilers from the series finale of “Ted Lasso,” now streaming on Apple TV+.
Here’s a scoop: There will be a fourth season of “Ted Lasso.” Actually, it has already aired, and it was not great.
“Ted Lasso” grew out a character created by Jason Sudekis and friends for NBC Premier League promos, a Kansas City-based football coach who somehow finds himself coaching the other football in London for AFC Richmond, a chronically downtrodden franchise. It’s a typical fish-out-of water premise, which is a classic comedy trope, but comes with some limitations — namely, when the fish becomes an amphibian and begins to love land life. Mindful of those constraints, “Lasso” debuted in 2020 to acclaim, with critics lauding its cock-eyed optimism as the world struggled with a deadly pandemic. Season 1’s 10 episodes ran an average of 30 minutes apiece, totaling 299 minutes for the season.

Ted Lasso has a big decision to make. In the 11th episode of "Ted Lasso"'s third season, which was released on Apple TV+ on May 24, Ted (Jason Sudeikis) is confronted by his mom, Dottie (Becky Ann Baker), about how his son, Henry (Gus Turner), misses him back home in Kansas.
"I know," Ted says. "I miss him, too." He starts crying and struggles to find the words. "It's like I'm scared sometimes to like get close close to that little boy . . . 'Cause I know he's gonna leave." His mom tells him, "That's the thing about being a parent. Sometimes you lose and sometimes you win, but most of the time you just tie."
Ted falls asleep on the couch that night, and when he wakes up in the morning, Dottie has left, headed back to America. Ted walks to work, like he always does, and finds Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham) in his office.

In episode 11 of "Ted Lasso"'s third season, Ted (Jason Sudeikis) is surprised by a special house guest: his mom, Dottie Lasso. She appears totally unannounced in London and shadows her son throughout his day working at AFC Richmond. Eventually, the pair work out some of their long-standing issues, especially those around Ted's dad's death.
If you're an avid TV watcher, you might wonder where you recognize the actor who plays Ted's mom - Becky Ann Baker - from. The answer is a lot of places, since Becky Ann is an extremely prolific character actor. Two of her biggest roles were as Jean Weir on NBC's short-lived (but extremely beloved) teen comedy "Freaks and Geeks" and as Loreen Horvath - the mom to Lena Dunham's Hannah - on HBO's "Girls." She received an Emmy nomination in 2017 for her role on "Girls." But the 70-year-old actor has had smaller...

[This story contains spoilers for “Mom City,” the 11th episode of Ted Lasso’s third season.]
So Ted’s going home, right?
It’s the story Ted Lasso has been building this whole season. Ted (Jason Sudeikis) began his third go-round with AFC Richmond wondering what he’s still doing in London while his son is 4,000-plus miles away, and he hasn’t shaken that feeling even as his midseason, Arthur Bryant’s sauce- and Tex Winter-induced hallucination/brainstorm to switch the team’s tactics led to an insane win streak that’s put the club in striking distance of the Premier League title.
But after clearing some air with his visiting mother (Becky Ann Baker) and beating powerhouse Manchester City for the first time — thanks in large part to Mancunian Jamie (Phil Dunster), whose own parental issues come to the fore as well — the “truth bomb” Ted is about to drop on Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham) as the episode cuts to the end credits could hardly be anything else.

The final whistle is approaching for “Ted Lasso” Season 3, which looks more and more like the final installment of the Apple TV+ comedy series starring Jason Sudeikis as the title character. Talk about a cliffhanger at the end of the penultimate episode, “Mom City,” which brought the story about fatherly figures full circle by introducing some of the mothers who made these men who they are.
Ted’s own mother Dottie (Becky Ann Baker) paid him an unexpected visit in Richmond before their big match versus Manchester City, the sky blue team that Jamie Tartt (Phil Dunster) briefly defected to at the end of Season 1. Jamie’s mom also made an appearance.
Family members often bring out different sides of us, but a certain dilemma involving one Nate the Great (Nick Mohammed) shed a lot of light on the backstory of one Coach Beard (Brendan Hunt).

I do love checking out directorial debuts, I so do. Especially when it looks like the first-time director is flexing that creative muscle in a realm you might not exactly associate with their usual body of work. So the thought of Joe Lo Truglio of Brooklyn Nine-Nine fame making what promised to be some sort of psychological survival thriller type thing starring actress Beth Dover (Orange is the New Black). Well, it is safe to say I was super intrigued by this prospect and couldn’t wait to check out Outpost.

"Routine is key. Your head needs that. Three months is a long time." Gravitas has unveiled an official trailer for an indie thriller titled Outpost, marking the directorial debut of actor Joe Lo Truglio. He directed a few TV episodes for the shows he's been in, but this is his first feature film. It premiered at FrightFest last year, and opens in the US this May. Kate seeks recovery from a violent assault by taking a job as a "fire lookout", but becomes increasingly overwhelmed by her isolation and tragic past. A story about pain, what happens when you run from it, how it always catches up and controls what you see & hear. It commands what you do. If you don’t face your demons, they'll come to face you. Outpost stars Beth Dover, Ato Essandoh, Dylan Baker, Becky Ann Baker, Dallas Roberts, Ta'Rea Campbell, Tim Neff, and D.R. Anderson.

Exclusive: Mark Consuelos has joined the cast of HBO Max’s The Girls on the Bus in a recurring role.
Consuelos will portray a major Hollywood action star-turned-politician who joined the presidential race after a Twitter poll said 46 percent of Americans would vote for him — regardless of party affiliation.
From writers Amy Chozick and Julie Plec, The Girls On The Bus centers on Sadie McCarthy (Melissa Benoist), a journalist who romanticizes Tim Crouse’s Boys on the Bus book and who scrapped her whole life for her own shot at covering a presidential campaign for the paper of record. Sadie hits the trail and eventually bonds with three female competitors, Grace (Carla Gugino), Lola (Natasha Behnam), and Kimberlyn (Christina Elmore). Despite their differences, the women become a found family with a front-row seat to the greatest soap opera in town: the battle for the White House.

With his signature smile and jolly attitude, Ted Lasso (Jason Sudeikis) once said: "I love meeting people's moms. It's like reading an instruction manual as to why they're nuts." Be careful what you wish for Ted, because the time has come for AFC Richmond and the entire viewing audience to read your instruction manual and learn all your childhood secrets. That's right — season 3 of "Ted Lasso" will introduce the titular football coach's mother.
