- He was profoundly deaf, as result of an incident while testing a high-velocity rifle during his army service. In July 2008 he had a cochlear implant, enabling him to hear for the first time in over fifty years; he described his experience of the implant in a BBC Radio 4 programme "Earfull - From Silence into Sound".
- Received advice about being an actor from Sir Laurence Olivier and Trevor Nunn (both former directors of the Royal National Theatre in London).
- Left the army in 1969 to pursue a career in acting.

- Has appeared in two different series based on Sherlock Holmes. He played a Russian Count in The Resident Patient episode of The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Wilder in The Abominable Bride episode of Sherlock.
- Appeared on stage with the Royal Shakespeare Company and as the BFG at the Polka Theatre in Wimbledon.
