‘The Callisto Protocol’ Dlc Review – “The Final Transmission” Fails to Improve on a Flawed Base Game
In Thomas Wilde’s review of the Callisto Protocol last December, he wrote that the game could have used more time in development to reach the full potential of what developer Striking Distance was going for. In the last seven months, the game has received patches fixing bugs and adding new game modes, including New Game+ and a combat-focused Riot Mode, culminating with its last piece of content, a story Dlc called “The Final Transmission.”
Unfortunately, even with the extra time, the core problems of the base game still plague this expansion, highlighting the fundamental flaws in the game’s design. “The Final Transmission” takes place after the events of the main game, following Jacob (Josh Duhamel), under the orders of Dr. Caitlyn Mahler (Louise Barnes), in his efforts to escape Black Iron Prison with data about the nefarious experiments taking place. Black Sails, Season 1: Episode 3 – “III.”
Written by Jonathan E. Steinberg & Robert Levine
Directed by Neil Marshall
Airs Saturday nights at 9 on Starz
When Black Sails premiered, I welcomed its slow pace and narrative interest. Going the less obvious route, the series has – so far – avoided laying the action on too thick and, instead, has stuck close to its main characters. However, these characters have mostly been conniving and stressing out, wanting to kill certain people but being unable to for whatever reasons (like due to John’s craftiness). At some point, tensions need to be relieved, and the fact that this is a series about pirates makes that very easy to accomplish – throw a sword between two characters and let them go for it. For all its similar kind of quietness in the face of a loud premise, The Walking Dead still manages to have a zombie-based action set-piece in almost every episode.

Black Sails continues an upward trend after a sleepy pilot two weeks ago, and “III” contains some of the most promising material we’ve seen from the pirate drama. Last week’s episode (read the review here) saw development in several of the major characters, especially Luke Arnold’s John Silver and Tom Hopper’s Billy Bones – those characters continue to gain momentum and personality in the third installment, while Toby Stephens’s Captain Flint still operates behind a veil of mystery. Spoilers follow for the third episode “III.”
After committing the entire schedule of the Urca d’Lima to memory, John Silver showed this week that he’s one of the more cunning scoundrels on an island full of, well, cunning scoundrels. By refusing to give up the ultimate destination of the treasure-laden galleon, Flint and his crew are forced to take Silver along on their quest, ensuring...
