The warning signs pile up early on in Will Finn and Dan St. Pierre's animated Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return.
There's that clunky, passive title; the credit informing us that the movie is not based on any of L. Frank Baum's 40 public-domain Oz books, but rather a book by Roger Stanton Baum (who?); and the fact that, while it purports to pick up the day after the tornado from The Wizard of Oz, Dorothy (Lea Michele) now lives in modern-day Kansas. (The early 2000s, anyway, judging from the gas prices.)
That's a baffling decision that isn't paid off by anything that follows, as the Scarecrow (Dan Aykroyd) uses a rainbow-based kidnapping machine to pull Dorothy back to an Oz that has been taken over by the Wicked Witch's brother, the Jester (Martin Short at ...

Because the magical stories that unfold in the 14 Oz books written by L. Frank Baum are in the public domain, Disney had no obligation to secure approval of its new film, Oz the Great and Powerful, from the family of the legendary author. For the record, though, his great-grandson, Roger S. Baum, is cautiously looking forward to the big 3D epic. "I must admit that when Disney does something, they try to do it right. It looks like -- and I’m only talking about glimpses now -- but it looks like an exciting movie," the Las Vegas resident tells

Lea Michele has some big shoes to fill in her latest project — and those shoes just happen to be ruby slippers.
That's right, it's the new trailer for the upcoming animated film "Dorothy of Oz," which finds the "Glee" star doing her best to live up to the legacy of Judy Garland, one song at a time.
Based on the book of the same name by Roger Stanton Baum, great-grandson of original "Wizard of Oz" creator Frank L. Baum, "Dorothy of Oz" tells the tale of Dorothy Gale's return to Oz to help save her friends from the dastardly machinations of a creep named The Jester.
Patrick Stewart, Oliver Platt, Martin Short, Dan Aykroyd and Kelsey Grammer also pitch in voicework, but, with Michele belting out tunes, there's no question whose talent is going to make or break the film.
Check it out, courtesy of Coming Soon, and see why there's no place like "Glee.

Glee actress Lea Michele has been working on the upcoming animated musical ‘Dorothy of Oz’. Voicing the title role, a first look has been released of the singing beauty’s on-screen character. The 2012 release is a follow up to the classic, and well known, ‘Wizard of Oz’. The adaption, based on the book by writer Roger S. Baum, follows Dorothy’s return to the magical land of Oz in search of the notorious cowardly lion, the tin man, and her friend, the scare crow. Talking about the project to EW last year, Michele stated that “[Dorothy] does definitely have that elegance and softness that Judy Garland brought to the role, but...

I know what you're thinking - why are we featuring this poster? Well, there's no good reason besides that it's a new take on the Wizard of Oz, obviously, and features the voice of Glee's Lea Michelle, who I totally love (yep). Dorothy of Oz is a new animated movie being directed by Dan St. Pierre. Dorothy returns to Kansas to find it devastated by the tornado that had whisked her away to Oz. The home she has been so desperate to return to is severely damaged, the townspeople are packing up. But shortly after arriving in Kansas, Dorothy is magically transported back to Oz where she finds out that it's in trouble and the people need her help, too. Thanks to IMPAwards for originally debuting this poster. The screenplay was written by Barry Glasser & Adam Balsam, based on Roger S. Baum's novel, with original songs written by Tift Merritt.

It seems that Oz truly is the place to be nowadays. Still riding high on the ongoing success of Wicked in theatres, there has been talk of the wonderful Wizard and his homeland coming thick and fast over the last year.
But while most of the hype and debate has focused on Sam Raimi’s Oz: The Great and Powerful to the mooted Robert Zemeckis remake of the original film, the upcoming animated adventure Dorothy of Oz has been keeping itself a little quieter – until now.
Previously we’d seen a little concept art here and there, but now we have a full blown promotional poster to get excited over, sure to delight Oz-fans with it’s recognisable trademarks:
Here’s the film’s official synopsis:

Dorothy of Oz is an animated sequel to the classic 1939 film that's slated to come out in 2012, based on the book by Roger S. Baum. Somehow it's managed to stay off of my radar thus far, but today we get our first look at some character designs and concept art, courtesy of THR.

Dorothy of Oz is a CGI animated feature film being developed that serves as a sequel to the original Wizard of Oz story. While this film is under construction, Sam Raimi is currently preparing to shoot his Oz prequel film, Oz, The Great and Powerful. This new CGI project sounds like it's going to be pretty cool.
In the story, Dorothy returns to Kansas to find it devastated by the tornado that had whisked her away to the magical land of Oz. The home she had been so desperate to return to is no longer; the townspeople, with nowhere to turn, are packing up and moving out. However, before Dorothy can even begin to react to or resist this change, she is transported back to Oz in a giant rainbow. Old is new again as Alice in Wonderland turned Hollywood’s collective fickle attention to the power of retreading the world’s classic fairy tales. Of course, the remake industry was already churning in that direction with its never-ending trample of childhoods, but when Tim Burton’s re-imagining broke $1 billion the studios ran, not skipped, back into fantasy land.
1939’s The Wizard of Oz has been revisited before, namely an ill-conceived sequel, a bizarre Michael Jackson tribute, and a Muppet incarnation, but the classic is at the heart of at least four modern trips down the yellow brick road. Sam Raimi and Robert Downey Jr. are committed to Disney’s own re-telling, titled Oz: The Great and Powerful. Comic book artist Todd MacFarlane is shepherding a dark, twisted version. Drew Barrymore was rumored to be producing Surrender Dorothy about Dorothy’s great-great-granddaughter and her dusty, ruby red slippers.

Was Dorothy (Judy Garland) lying to us when she told us there's no place like home in The Wizard of Oz?
Judging from the way movie people are flocking back to Oz, it seems the little girl from Kansas might've missed something in her first trip.
As of today there are six, count them, films in development that have something to do with Frank L. Baum's timeless classic or the Victor Fleming film adaptation and that's not even including the much awaited stage to screen translation of Broadway blockbuster Wicked.
Everyone wants a piece of Oz and projects in development have attracted the attention of people like Drew Barrymore, Sean Astin and even the guy who made Deliverance.
But before we surrender to confusion let's go through each of the projects.
