Ashes buried in the crypt of St. Paul's Cathedral, London.
Longtime theater critic of the London stage.
Was a strong believer in the spoken delivery of blank verse as
rhythmical, though unrhymed, verse. He opposed the "conversational
style" of reciting Shakespeare, which is in favor today, as being too
realistic.
He was awarded Knight Bachelor of the Order of the British Empire in the 1956 Queen's Honours List for his services to literature.
