Six seasons and a movie -- it's finally happening!
A Community movie is apparently in the works, with star Joel McHale stating the film will begin shooting in 2024.
It's been nine years since we last saw our favorite Greendale Human Beings, and we have a lot of questions about the upcoming film. Here's everything we know so far about the Community movie.
Community Movie Release Date
There has been a lot of back and forth about whether a Community movie would ever be made. With the famous "six seasons and a movie" line from the show, fans have long held out hope.
In September 2022, Peacock ordered a Community movie. However, series creator Dan Harmon later expressed concern that the movie wouldn't happen at all despite being "nearly done" with the script.
In January 2023, Joel McHale said the movie would be filming that summer, but production was canceled due to the actor and writer strikes.

“Community” star Yvette Nicole Brown responded Tuesday to a disparaging interview her one-time costar Chevy Chase gave in which he criticized the NBC-Dan Harmon comedy series for being “not funny enough for me.”
“He seems nice,” Brown quipped, pairing the apparently sarcastic declaration with a laughing emoji. The actress wrote the comment while retweeting Deadline’s coverage of a “Wtf With Marc Maron” interview where the “Saturday Night Live” and “National Lampoon” alum revisited his reportedly contentious departure from “Community.”

As a character actor starring in NBC’s hit series Community, Yvette Nicole Brown was never overly concerned about her size or weight.
But health and wellness were always important. So when Brown was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes while filming Community, she worked with her doctors to make healthy changes.
Today she’s feeling better than ever. And Brown wants to use her health scare as a platform to bring awareness to obesity and that it is a disease.
Yvette Nicole Brown discovered she had diabetes
Brown played Shirley Bennett, the beloved Community mother of the motley crew. Shirley attended Greendale Community College to study business so she could learn how to market her baked goods – something Brown says she really leaned into while filming the sitcom.
“Diabetes happened. I ate a lot of donuts,” Brown told Showbiz Cheat Sheet about her wake-up call that she needed to get healthy.

Community star Yvette Nicole Brown has said she doesn’t have any updates on the forthcoming movie version of the hit sitcom.
In September, it was announced that the sitcom’s promise of “six seasons and a movie” would finally come true.
US streaming service Peacock shared the news seven years after the series came to an end.
It was revealed that creator Dan Harmon was overseeing the project, and that the majority of the main cast would be returning. This included Joel McHale, Gillian Jacobs, Danny Pudi, Alison Brie, Jim Rash and Ken Jeong.
However, at the time, it was reported that three cast members were not yet attached to star: Donald Glover, Chevy Chase and Yvette Nicole Brown.
Appearing at the LA premiere for Disenchanted this week, Brown, who plays Shirley Bennett in Community, told Variety: “I don't know anything about the movie – I literally know nothing.

Attention, Greendale Human Beings: a "Community" feature film is finally in the works at Peacock, fulfilling the sitcom's famous "six seasons and a movie" prophecy. Announced by the NBC streaming platform on Sept. 30, "Community: The Movie" will reunite most of the comedy's ensemble cast, including Joel McHale, Alison Brie, Danny Pudi, Ken Jeong, Gillian Jacobs, and Jim Rash, as well as original series creator Dan Harmon, Variety reports. McHale is also set to executive produce alongside Andrew Guest.
Donald Glover and Yvette Nicole Brown - who portrayed Troy Barnes and Shirley Bennett, respectively - are not yet confirmed to be involved, although McHale did tag both actors in a tweet and Instagram post sharing the news. "Community" was simply playing the long game with "Six seasons and a movie," after all.
One of the funniest running gags in the entire comedy series -- which started as an incredibly niche underdog with an almost impenetrable sense of humor and consistently low ratings, only later exploding in popularity as the years have gone by -- has finally turned into a self-fulfilling prophecy. Today, after far too many false starts and hints and hopeful speculation, the news has been made official that "Community" will receive its very own feature film spin-off. Teased on social media by members of the cast like Joel McHale and Ken Jeong before the news officially broke, Peacock confirmed the rumors once and for all with the reveal that the long, long, long-awaited "Community" movie will debut exclusively on the streaming service.

Pop, pop the champagne: Maybe it’s not the darkest timeline after all, as “six seasons and a movie” is finally becoming reality. Peacock has ordered a movie based on the Dan Harmon comedy “Community,” bringing back original stars Joel McHale, Danny Pudi, Alison Brie, Gillian Jacobs, Jim Rash and Ken Jeong to check in on what the gang from Greendale has been up to since the show ended in 2015.
Without sharing specifics, Peacock and Sony Pictures TV, which jointly announced the greenlight on Friday, described the negotiations for Peacock to secure the movie as “heavily competitive.” As part of the deal, Peacock has also acquired non-exclusive rights to the full six-season “Community” library, which can also be found on Netflix and Hulu.
“Community” creator Harmon is behind the movie as executive producer and writer, along with Andrew Guest. McHale also serves as EP, as do Russ Krasnoff and Gary Foster.

Exclusive: Two-time Primetime Emmy winner Maya Rudolph, Yvette Nicole Brown and Jayma Mays are boarding Disenchanted, the Disney+ Enchanted sequel starring Amy Adams, Idina Menzel and James Marsden
Disney Studios’ President of Production Sean Bailey announced the sequel at Disney Investor Day back in December. Adams, Menzel and Marsden are reprising their respective roles of Giselle, Nancy and Prince Edward from the original film, with composer Alan Menken also returning. He said during a Jlgb Virtual livestream that Marsden and Menzel would be returning for Disenchanted.
The 2007 live-action movie was a satire on Disney animated princess musicals, a fish-out-of-water tale about a cartoon princess who is submerged in modern-day New York City. I hear Rudolph will play a villain in the sequel with Brown and Mays also potentially portraying evil as well.
Adam Shankman is directing for a production start later this spring. Producers are Barry Josephson, Adams, and Barry Sonnenfeld.

These days, Dan Harmon is primarily known for co-creating Rick and Morty and, while I do hugely admire that show, his previous, live-action sitcom, Community, will always occupy a far larger space in my heart.
Both series share the signature Harmon quality of complex, inventive storylines and surprising emotional depth. However, on Community, the real-world, live-action setting makes the ambitious plots more remarkable and the emotionality plucks at your heartstrings all the harder. Take it from Harmon himself, who just last year said Community was“the thing of which I am most proud of, forever and ever.”
I would even perhaps go so far as to call Community the best live-action sitcom ever made, that is, had it ended after the third season. Warning: Mild spoilers for Avengers: Endgame ahead.
With all the speed and action of Avengers: Endgame, it's tough to catch the quick Easter eggs Marvel sneaks into the background. Blink once and you might miss an essential plot point, a teaser for the next installment, or a fun cameo. For instance, did you spot the two Community alumni who made their way into the movie? Jeong plays a security guard who discovers Ant-Man after the hero is found in a storage unit following the five-year time jump. Jeong's appearance is short and sweet, but not even a cap and mustache could keep us from figuring out his true identity. His former costar, however, is less disguised during her own cameo. “Community’s” Yvette Nicole Brown and “The Middle’s” Alphonso McAuley have joined Ben Platt in Black Label Media’s “Love & Oatmeal.”
“Camp X-Ray” director Peter Sattler is helming the project, with Steve Waverly penning the script. Black Label Media’s Molly Smith, Rachel Smith, Thad Luckinbill, and Trent Luckinbill are producing, along with Trina Wyatt. Blm’s Jon Schumacher will executive produce.
The story centers on Scott, a 20-something aspiring writer who, in the wake of his father’s sudden death, sees his dream of moving to Paris put in jeopardy when he is forced to temporarily take in his wildly unpredictable, mentally ill sister. They are eyeing a start of production early summer.
Brown is best known for her starring role as the opinionated but sweet Shirley Bennett on NBC’s “Community.” She recently appeared on ABC’s “The Mayor” and currently has a recurring role on “Mom.

Six seasons are done - now it's time for a movie, right? Or is it season 7? We've compiled some quotes from Team Community...
Another season of Community has drawn to a close. It's not the first time the show has offered a sense of finality, so Emotional Consequences Of Broadcast Television may not be the end of the line, after all. Indeed, Community, generally, refuses to die. So, what's being planned? Does the show have a future, still?
The show's creator Dan Harmon was quick to shut down any rumours, telling Twitter "I'm gonna delete my Twitter app and take a couple weeks off the internet and no interviews and I love you."
Yahoo, who saved the show and funded season 6, were a bit more keen to chat, and released this statement: “With the season six finale of Community airing today, we’re continually excited by how much fans are engaging with the series.

One of the pieces of media I'm most excited about consuming in 2015 is season six of Community. Dan Harmon's brilliant sitcom was cancelled by NBC but miraculously saved at the last second by Yahoo Screen (of all places), where it will debut this year. Now, thanks to info from EW, we know exactly when we'll be able to return to Greendale Community College: March 17th, 2015. The first two episodes will be available on that date, and then a new episode will be released each Tuesday until the 13-episode season is finished.
Some brief tidbits about what we can expect moving forward:
Harmon confirms we won't have to pay to watch the show on Yahoo Screen - it's advertising-supported.Despite being freed from traditional network restrictions, we shouldn't expect the show to change too much. “Three-act stories are what work for me,” Harmon said. There also won't be any profanity or nudity.

The deal that revived NBC’s canceled “Community” via Yahoo Stream came down to “literally hours,” show creator Dan Harmon told reporters at Tuesday’s Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour, citing legalities and contract expirations.
Yahoo stepped in with their own idea for the show at the 11th hour, while Sony was in talks with apparent frontrunner Hulu, he explained.

Community, the show that will never die, is returning next spring for its sixth season (bringing it that much closer to fulfilling its campaign promise of #SixSeasonsAndAMovie), but the premiere will find the acclaimed comedy in different shape than we last left it.
For one, the Dan Harmon-created series has jumped from NBC, which axed it last summer, to a new home on Yahoo Screen. For another, series regular Yvette Nicole Brown, who played Shirley Bennett, opted not to return for the sixth season, leaving a considerable void. As such, it makes sense that the first images from season 6 want to show us one way in which Community lovers can expect to see a new kind of show.

Production is about to begin on the online-only sixth season of Community, and Yahoo--which will distribute the show through its Yahoo Screen platform--has announced a pair of new names who will join the comedy's cast: The latest additions to the Greendale Community College campus are Paget Brewster and Keith David. A press release from Yahoo defines the two new roles. Brewster, who recently completed a seven-season run on the CBS drama Criminal Minds, will play a consultant hired to "shape up" Greendale. David, who has acted in films like Platoon and Crash, will play "a retired scientist reinventing himself." It's worth noting that David was also one of The Cape, a short-lived NBC series that served as the inspiration for Community's famous "six seasons and a movie" joke. If Community creator Dan Harmon doesn't find a way to slip in a reference to that role, I'll be disappointed. Brewster...

School is almost back in session, Community fans! Ahead of a November 17 production start date for the sixth season of the beloved cult comedy, which was once housed at NBC but is now at Yahoo, it’s been announced that Paget Brewster and Keith David are joining the cast in regular roles.
Brewster, known for her part on Criminal Minds, will portray Francesca “Frankie” Dart, a consultant brought in to help shape up Greendale after its conditions slip below state requirements. Sharp-eyed fans of Community might recognize Brewster – she previously had a role in the season two episode “Analysis of Cork-Based Networking” as Debra Chambers, a member of Greendale’s It department – but she’s playing a new character for her role in this season.
Meanwhile, David, known both for his voice-over work on various Ken Burns documentaries and for his roles in such films as Platoon and Crash, will play Elroy Patashnik,...

Does Netflix have Eric Cartman’s Awesome-o working in their studios? You remember; he was the lovable robot who could invent Adam Sandler movies out of thin air, like “Adam Sandler falls in love with a Golden Retriever” or “Adam Sandler is stranded on an island and falls in love with a coconut.” If so, that robot has led them to sign a deal with Sandler’s Happy Madison productions to produce and distribute four films, all of which Sandler will star in and produce. Additionally, Netflix will bankroll each of the films, the budget of which on previous Sandler films have averaged roughly $80 million (though where that money goes in the budget is anyone’s guess). This comes days after news that Netflix’s first feature would be the Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon sequel.

Yvette Nicole Brown will not appear in the upcoming thirteen episode, sixth season of "Community" on Yahoo Screen.
The show's executive producers, and Sony Pictures Television, have released Brown from her contract after she asked to leave the show to care for her ailing father says The Live Feed.
Brown plays Greendale Community College student Shirley Bennett and was expected to return alongside the show's other regulars including Joel McHale, Jim Rash, Gillian Jacobs, Danny Pudi, Alison Brie and Ken Jeong.
Another exit is Jonathan Banks, who played a regular on the show's fifth season. He's had to pull out due to his commitments to reprise his iconic "Breaking Bad" role in AMC's "Better Call Saul".
Two new characters will be joining Greendale though - a woman brought in as a consultant to help shape up the school, and a retired salesman who comes to Greendale to reinvent himself.

When cancelled NBC sitcom Community was picked up by Yahoo! Screen in a rather remarkable eleventh-hour resuscitation, loyal fans of the beloved series likely breathed a deep sigh of relief and assumed that, finally, everything was going to be okay for the Greendale gang. Sadly, that’s not the case today, as series regular Yvette Nicole Brown has confirmed that she will not be reprising the role of Shirley Bennett in Community‘s upcoming sixth season.
Brown, who has been with Community since the start, opted to depart the show in order to care for her ailing father. Speaking with TV Guide, which broke news of the exit, she said:
“My dad needs daily care and he needs me. The idea of being away 16 hours a day for five months, I couldn’t do it. It was a difficult decision for me to make, but I had to choose my dad.

A sixth season of Community is coming soon, but unfortunately it will be without Shirley. Sony TV confirmed on Monday that Yvette Nicole Brown is leaving the community college-set comedy, which was canceled by NBC in the spring and is being revived by Yahoo. (TV Guide first reported the news.) Brown—who starred in the show's first five seasons as Shirley Bennett, the devout, tightly wound mother of three—says she is departing so she can tend to her sick father. Shirley Bennett will not be enrolling for another semester at Greendale Community College. TV Guide reports that the sixth-and-likely-final season of Dan Harmon's "Community," set to hit Yahoo! Shirley, Community fans are going to be disappointed with this news. But alas, it's true: Yvette Nicole Brown is departing the fan favorite comedy after five seasons.
Brown — who has played Shirley Bennett since the 2009 launch of Community — confirms to TV Guide Magazine that she has asked to be released from her contract for personal reasons. Sony Pictures TV and executive producers Dan Harmon and Chris McKenna have honored her request.
The actress says the change was necessary in order to take care of her ailing father. "My dad needs daily care and he needs me," Brown says. "The idea of being away 16 hours a day for five months, I couldn't do it. It was a difficult decision for me to make, but I had to choose my dad."

Community fans can finally breathe. Just when things were beginning to really look hopeless, Yahoo as stepped in, and is going to give us the chance to see the sixth season.
Community fans are certainly a vocal crowd, and the show has managed a sort of cult status, in addition to ratings that are, in today’s world, actually not all that bad. McHale and crew will get at least 13 more episodes of community college (because who knows what will happen if the run does well enough) in their continuing effort to never graduate from anything.
The news makes for an interesting step for Yahoo Screen, and hopefully one that marks a future trend.

"Community" Season 5 is not quite yet in production, but the NBC comedy's star Yvette Nicole Brown (Shirley Bennett) stopped by HuffPost Live to address one of fans' biggest concerns about the new season: Donald Glover's (Troy Barnes) departure.
"My honey," she said, when asked about Glover, before echoing the sentiments she shared with Andy Cohen on "Watch What Happens Live" about the actor-musician needing to "spread his wings" and "fly."
As for how Troy's departure will be handled in "Community" Season 5, Brown's not sure exactly how it will transpire, but she does think some positives could come from it, especially for Abed Nadir (Danny Pudi), Troy's other half. "I think this is going to be good for Abed. I know on the surface it seems like this is going to destroy him because he had a fit when 'Cougar Town' was canceled initially. So I know that...

There are plenty of leading men and classical heroes adorning our televisual screens these days, more than ever with every passing year and developing show. We have our butt-kicking everymen (24′s Jack Bauer), our idealistic crime-solvers (the CSI franchise main men) and our morally ambiguous anti-heroes (Breaking Bad’s Walter White). They’re strong, they’re commanding and their arcs are compelling and addictive to watch.
However, the gender balance on TV remains on shaky ground – for every single female main character out there, there’s at least five more male ones. Even more unfortunate is the fact that while a male character can be all manners of morally grey and popular while a female character is more likely to either be a fan favourite who can do wrong or a loathed – justly or unjustly – woman.
It’s rather unfair that these maligned heroines don’t get as much respect or praise as they deserve,...

Here is some awesome Community meets the Justice League fan art. Created by artist Ben Deguzman, the piece features Ben Chang (Ken Jeong ) as Martian Manhunter, Shirley Bennett (Yvette Nicole Brown) as Hawkgirl, Jeff Winger (Joel McHale) as Superman, Troy Barnes (Donald Glover) as Green Lantern, Pierce Hawthorne (Chevy Chase) as Aquaman, Britta Perry (Gillian Jacobs) as Black Canary, Annie Edison (Alison Brie) as Wonder Woman, Abed Nadir (Danny Pudi) as Batman, and Dean Craig Pelton (Jim Rash) as The Flash.
The fourth season of the NBC show aired this past week to high ratings. I personally have not been a huge fan lately of the show. I do love Deguzman's art though. Check out more of his work here and these new pieces below:

In anticipation of season 4 of the hit comedy series Community, this is a great moment to look back and pick out the best episodes from the show so far. Community has spanned three memorable seasons, so that’s plenty of episodes to scrounge through in hopes of finding the best of the best.
Firstly though, if you have no idea what Community is (talk about being streets behind), here’s the lowdown. Community is a comedy series that first aired in America in September of 2009. It revolves around a study group of seven students attending community college and their various antics. The series is best known for its meta-humor and parodies. It references a lot of cultural aspects from literature, film, television and even video games. The seven core characters: Jeff Winger, Britta Perry, Abed Nadir, Shirley Bennett, Annie Edison, Troy Barnes and Pierce Hawthorne are a great bunch to watch (especially Annie!

NBC has decided that its comedy "Community" -- about a study group composed of adult misfits in an equally off-kilter community college -- won't return to the airwaves until Feb. 7. Each year, the show films special Halloween and Christmas-themed episodes, which now won't be seen until midwinter or even spring.

On the surface, “Early 21st Century Romanticism” doesn’t feel like a complex or ambitious episode. And for the most part, it’s not really. But even though this appears to be a season one-esque episode that is fairly low-key in its approach and execution, there is actually a lot going on. Not only episodes of the series have to be super high-concept or straight-forward like “Celebrity Pharmacology,” and this one has like four different versions of Community within it.
Britta and Troy and Abed’s stories are fairly straightforward, grounded threads that could have fit right alongside any of the great season one episodes. But Jeff off and away from the group with Duncan, Chang and a whole lot of other randoms Chang invited to Jeff’s apartment for a party is a bit more somber and contemplative like some of this season’s earlier efforts. I have never in my life played Dungeons & Dragons. Never came close to even thinking about playing. My knowledge of the game is slim, obtained only from that fantastic final episode of Freaks and Geeks and a few passing conversations with members of my co-hort who do enjoy the same and were rightfully excited for this episode of Community.
I think, however, it’s best that I don’t know much about the game because this episode isn’t about Dungeons & Dragons, it’s about doing the right thing and finding your place in a stressful, hateful world.
Okay, who am I kidding, this episode is clearly about Dungeons & Dragons. But it does a really nice job of keeping the references open enough for a non-fan like myself and still manages to mix in some of those “real” storytelling beats amid the greatness that is a live-action comic setpiece built...

There’s been a lot of discussion about the two different kinds of Community. It’s not quite “3 Glees” worthy, but critics and fans can obviously see how this series can present us with high-concept, meta-driven episodes like “Epidemiology” and then follow it up with character-driven efforts like “Cooperative Calligraphy” or even ”Mixology Certification.” What’s interesting is that up until now, the series has done a really good job of separating those different sides to the series — for the most part. Obviously episodes like “Epidemiology” work so well because they include character-driven moments and “Cooperative Calligraphy” still hammers home some upper-level stuff while exploring the tensions with the group.
But Shirley’s pregnancy and her relationship with Chang (and the events of the zombie episode as a whole) have carried over in a different way. It’s a weird development from a high-concept episode and now it’s been...

Characterization on television these days is arguably at an all time high, which makes it very difficult for a TV Fanatic such as myself to keep up with the amount of quality shows on a growing number of networks.
In most cases, the best are able to perfectly balance their character development, providing each with robust contributions to the story. Examples of such brilliant execution include The Good Wife and Mad Men. It’s set outside of the safe Greendale walls, features little pop culture referencing and for the most part, isn’t funny in the same kind of way all the “great” episodes of Community are. Instead, it features a fairly boiler-plate sitcom plot and really doesn’t even play that plot in a traditional sitcom way and in more like a semi-serious dramedy kind of way that is just really compelling to watch unspool. But because the episode is so successful in its undertaking of this different kind of approach, it more or less proves that Community can do any sort of story with relative ease.
“Certification” is really not all that funny. Instead it does a lot of work in showing us how all the members of the study group have grown to rely...
