Back in 2016, as the snappy, swooping “Lake by the Ocean” was blanketing R&b radio, Maxwell was already thinking about the end of a long-gestating album trilogy that started in 2009. He had just released the second part, blackSUMMERS’night, and he was daydreaming aloud about following it quickly with part three, blacksummers’Night. “Then I’ll be free,” he joked. Free to start a new trilogy, perhaps. “I can have PURPLEwinterafternoon!”
That vision is now hardening into a reality — with the possible exception of PURPLEwinterafternoon — in more ways than one.

When the veteran luthier Sherwood Phifer goes out to hear live music, he hears elements of the guitar that the vast majority of even the most serious audiophiles could never pick up on. An amateur guitarist himself, Phifer has been building high-end customized instruments for roughly 45 years, so when he listens, he’s not hearing a performance merely as a fan or a fellow musician but also as one of the most respected luthiers in the country.

In 1989, Quincy Jones had already amassed one of the most enviable discographies in pop history, playing, writing, arranging, or producing for Ray Charles, Frank Sinatra, Lesley Gore, The Brothers Johnson, George Benson, Patti Austin, and Michael Jackson.
But the legendary polymath still had more to do — Jones set out to create an album that “represents everything I have worked for after 40 years,” according to The Billboard Book of Number One R&b Hits. That turned into Back on the Block, which spawned one of the last hits in Jones’ hit-filled...

Fifty years ago, the Beatles walked across a street in London for a photo shoot that would become the cover of their next album, Abbey Road — an anniversary that was commemorated on Thursday with crowds and news crews. But for John Kosh, the Apple Records art director who had to turn those shots into an album cover, that was only step one in creating one of rock’s most recognizable covers.
In 1969, Kosh was what he calls the “creative art director” for Apple Records, the Beatles’ label, and had an...

Damon Albarn staged a “cross pollination” between his many projects Saturday as his Gorillaz‘ welcomed Blur guitarist Graham Coxon onstage to cover that band’s “Song 2.”
The unlikely collaboration – the performance marked the first time Albarn’s animated act had covered a Blur song live – occurred during Gorillaz’ guest-filled Demon Dayz Festival in Pico Rivera, California, Mxdwn reports.
Albarn, melodica in hand, and company initially played “Song 2” in the quirky style of Gorillaz before Coxon walked out on stage unannounced, guitar slung on his shoulder, and launched into the traditional version of the 1997 hit,...

The CW is really bringing out the big guns for Supergirl. Set for its big move to the network from CBS this fall, the series will officially introduce Kara Danvers' (Melissa Benoist's) famous cousin Superman (Tyler Hoechlin) to the series right out of the gate in the first two episodes of the season. But that's not all! Wonder Woman herself, Lynda Carter, will join the cast as the President of the United States. Not since Battlestar Galactica's Laura Roslin have we been this excited for a commander in chief. Carter is locked for multiple episodes and will first appear in episode three. So one smooth move from Superman to Wonder Woman. Carter was crowned Miss World America in 1972 and most famously played Wonder Woman from 1975-1979 in the now iconic television series. Supergirl has been known to bring in actors who've played superheroes previously as a tip of the hat to fans,...

New Orleans, April 27 (Reuters) - Musician Troy Andrews, better known as "Trombone Shorty," witnessed his first New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival at age 12 - not from the viewing area but on stage.
"I was playing with my brother's brass band," said Andrews, now 27.
At this year's New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, Andrews will be given a high honor. He will perform for the first time as the closing act of the final day on the biggest stage. That time slot previously had long been occupied by one of New Orleans' most famous bands, the Neville Brothers.
The festival, which began Friday and ends May 5, has music lovers filling the walkways linking 12 stages arranged across 150 acres of the festival grounds, not far from downtown.
During the next two weekends, some 500 bands will perform at the festival, including a sprinkling of big names from Billy Joel, Dave Matthews and Adam Lambert to Jill Scott,...

New Orleans — Singer John Mayer sang his hits after local-born bluesman Dr. John performed hometown favorites such as "Iko Iko" on Friday to close out the sun-drenched first day of the 2013 New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival.
They were among the final performers on a day heavy on Louisiana-influenced music, such as T'Monde, a band of 20-somethings that kicked off the festival with century-old, fiddle-heavy Cajun tunes.
"Je vais faire accoire, que tu m'aimes toujours," sang Drew Simon (pronounced See-mon), while playing the accordion to lyrics from an old Cajun song that loosely translated means "I'm going to make believe that you still love me."
T'Monde (pronounced Tee-mone), in Cajun French can mean "little world" or "little people." The group based in Lafayette, La., opened one of the festival's 12 stages Friday under sunny skies, 70-degree temperatures and a gentle breeze.

Johnny Cash: Blood, Sweat and Tears (Columbia)
Some of Cash's '60s concept albums were burdened with much too talking between tracks; here the tribute to the American working man gets to mostly stand alone on its musical merits, and shines. Notably, it incluces the top version of the traditional "John Henry"” about the most legendarily heroic working man ever, and the version of "Casey Jones" here is classic as well. Politically and psychologically, Cash was the perfect man for this job.
1968
Byrds: Notorious Byrd Brothers (Columbia)
Sometimes transitional albums, confusing listeners expecting a group's earlier style, are underrated. Not so with this classic. It's true that it didn't sell as well as earlier Byrds LPs, nor did the single from the album chart very high, but for decades Notorious Byrd Brothers has been widely revered, and not just by fans; some critics have even anointed it as the band's best album.

Joe Henderson always had the respect of fellow musicians and hardcore jazz fanatics, but for a long time it seemed the closest he'd get to fame was his brief stint in Blood, Sweat & Tears (years later he reminisced, in one of my favorite interviews, about how that short period was when sax companies wanted his endorsement and gave him free horns). Hardly fair considering that he spent a quarter century ranked among the top three tenor saxophonists alive, along with Rollins and Shorter. Then, almost miraculously, Verve put together a masterful production/promotion campaign that made him more famous in his last decade than he'd ever been before. Alas, emphysema took him at age 64, but he'd managed to leave an impressive legacy with nary a misstep -- he never made a bad album, and his appearance on anyone else's album was always a mark of quality. One of the biggest black pop culture shocks of2011 was the sudden passing of Vesta Williams in September at age 53. Her unexpected and untimely death was just one in a long string of mysteries surrounding her life. What happened? Where had she been? Why hadn't she hit it bigger?
Tonight's season premiere of TV One's "Unsung" will answer all those questions and more. Vesta Williams showed early promise with a hit record, "Once Bitten, Twice Shy" on her debut album. George Benson once sang that “the neon lights are bright on Broadway.” On this episode of “Dancing with the Stars,” the neon lights, and ballroom spotlight, are bright on Broadway Week.
Leading couples J.R. Martinez/Karina Smirnoff and Ricki Lake/Derek Hough take on the same dance, the quickstep, giving us a chance to compare them. Ironically, the miserable-looking Hope Solo and Maksim Chmerkovsky look to rebound with the dance of love: the rumba.

We had put Edward Reid in the same bracket as Steven Hall when we were preparing to watch Britain’s Got Talent tonight.
Both men were hilariously funny when they first tried out for the ITV show, but both acts were funny because they were unexpected……so we thought they may have trouble topping their previous performances, without the element of surprise.
Tonight, Edward took the tune of George Benson’s Greatest Love Of All and over it, sang a song about Postman Pat, The Wombles, Popeye and The Teletubbies.
It was weirdly good, and we were as impressed by Ed’s vocal prowess as his subject matter. The judges were too, though Simon Cowell thought he’d ‘gone mad’ but ‘amazingly’ he had to admit that he ‘liked it.’
The Hoff loved it too and praised the Scottish drama teacher for doing a ‘great job’. He added that he...
