The latest film from writer-director Matt Ruskin begins in media res as an attentive neighbor overhears an attack on a female tenant in the unit next door. As he bangs on the door, the words “Inspired by a True Story” appear onscreen as the attacker turns up the radio to disguise the murder.
There are several attack scenes in Boston Strangler, which follows real life journalist Loretta McLaughlin (Kiera Knightley) as she embarks on an obsessive investigation of a serial killer targeting women in Boston from 1962 and 1964.
This first attack is the sparsest: it’s all strategic framing and sound effects to imply violence. This won’t always hold true, however; several other sequences of gendered violence are more explicit and sustained. But while the female victims were sexually assaulted and strangled, Ruskin and director of photography Ben Kutchins are careful not to sensationalize the crimes.

The last few years have seen Marvel Studios push the boundaries in terms of their costume designs, reinventing familiar looks while adapting new clothing from the comics. However, each Phase of the MCU has boasted a standout suit, which not only includes plenty of character-driven details, but also looks amazing and heavily draws from the source material.
When judging a costume therefore, it’s important to take into account the artwork on the page, how those attires actually interact with the narrative, their functionality on screen, and how iconic they have become. Each of these costumes bring something unique to the wider wardrobe of Marvel, and are standout pieces because of the nuanced choices the incredible costume designers made; a team of people that continue to be the unsung heroes of the entire franchise.

Translating a superhero’s costume from page to screen can be tricky business. For a character like Kamala Khan, Aka Ms. Marvel, there’s a lot more meaning imbued in her super suit than simply how cool it looks and whether the actor can eat during breaks. It holds deeper meaning about how she sees herself and how she carries her family and community with her as she moves through the world.
Den of Geek spoke with Iman Vellani for an interview and caught up with the cast and crew at a press conference before the show premiered to learn more about the Jersey City hero’s beloved costume.
As Sana Amanat, Executive Producer of the show and co-creator of the character herself put it, “What was really fun about I think this, was adapting the comic book design into something that felt like a super suit that felt very Marvel,...

As a member of the Academy and a three-time Oscar nominee for her work in films including “Walk the Line,” “W.E.” and “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” costume designer Arianne Phillips makes no secret of her excitement — and support — for the opening of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures on Sept. 30.
“Whether you’re a film fan or a filmmaker, to be able to learn about the artistry of filmmaking and all the artists is something that’s an extension of my purpose,” says Phillips, who has donated a cache of costumes to the institution, including a prototype dress for Reese Witherspooon from “Walk the Line” and an array of pieces from “Hedwig and the Angry Inch.” “I actually owned all the costumes from ‘Hedwig,’ which was part of the deal I made, because it was made on a prayer and a dime,” she explains.

Four of our five predicted nominees for Best Costume Design at the Oscars — “Dolemite is My Name,” “Downton Abbey,” “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and “Rocketman” — reaped bids for the Costume Designers Guild Awards. While our fifth contender — “Little Women” — was snubbed, fans of that film should take heart from the fact that the Cdg awards often overlook one of the eventual Academy Awards nominees.
The winner of a Cdg prize tends to repeat at the Oscars as was the case last year with “Black Panther.” But in 2018, “The Shape of Water” won with the guild while “Phantom Thread” prevailed at the Oscars. And in 2017, the academy went with the fantasy film “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” which had lost at the guild to the Oscar-snubbed “Doctor Strange.”
The 22nd edition of these kudos, which also honor costume design in television and commercials, will take place at the Beverly Hilton on Jan.

The Costume Designers Guild announced their nominations for the 22nd Cdga Awards on Tuesday. Among the nominees are Arianne Phillips for “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” Mayes C. Rubeo for “Jojo Rabbit” and Mitchell Travers for “Hustlers.” “The Irishman” is notably absent from the field.
The Costume Designers Guild celebrates excellence in film, television and short-form costume design. As previously announced, this year’s host will be Emmy-nominated writer, producer, author, director and actor Mindy Kaling, while the honorees will include Mary Ellen Fields (distinguished service award), Michael Kaplan (career achievement award), Adam McKay (distinguished collaborator award) and Charlize Theron (spotlight award).
“On behalf of the Costume Designers Guild, I’d like to congratulate all of our 22nd Cdga nominees. This year is a particularly exciting year for television as we have updated our rules of submission. Designers now submit a single episode that best represents their work on a series.

Nominees for the 22nd annual Costume Designer Guild Awards included frontrunning period pieces “Dolemite Is My Name,” “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” and “Rocketman.” They were joined by “Downton Abbey” and “Jojo Rabbit.” This definitely bodes well for Ruth Carter (“Dolemite”) in her bid for a second consecutive Oscar following “Black Panther.”
However, surprise no shows were “Joker,” “The Irishman,” “Little Women,” and “Judy.” And, Deborah Cook, who became the first costume designer from animation to get nominated by the Cdga for her breakthrough work on “Kubo and the Two Strings,” was denied this time around for her great Victorian-era work on Laika’s stop-motion Oscar contender, “Missing Link.”
Contemporary nominees, meanwhile, included “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,” “Hustlers,” “Knives Out,” “The Laundromat,” and “Queen & Slim.” But “Bombshell” didn’t make the cut.

“A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” director Marielle Heller didn’t want Tom Hanks to wear any prosthetics when playing Fred Rogers in the biopic, which was inspired by the Esquire article “Can You Say … Hero?” by Tom Junod (played by Matthew Rhys as a character named Lloyd Vogel). Heller felt such measures would throw up a barrier between the audience and the performance. Hanks, for one, was happy to hear that.
“To channel Mister Rogers, I had several questions for Mari,” says Hanks. “Questions including how do you want your movie to look like and feel like in the body of Mister Rogers? Are we going to do CGI? Are we going to have a lot of graphics in order to turn me into him — which is possible because I’m not as skinny as Mister Rogers, you know. Are we going to do dental plates? Richard E. Grant is so memorable in “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” that it’s a shock to realize he’s only in a fraction of the film.
Fox Searchlight’s “Can You Ever Forgive Me?”centers on biographer Lee Israel (Melissa McCarthy) when she is broke and desperate, and begins forging celebrity letters. Israel has encounters with multiple characters, but it’s the love-hate relationship with friend and accomplice Jack Hock (Grant) that audiences remember, even though he only enters one-third into the film.
To begin research, Grant read Israel’s 2008 memoirs. “It was her voice, in all its scabrous wit, but she was very scant on detail about Jack Hock. It’s a real achievement that [scriptwriters] Nicole Holofcener and Jeff Whitty were able to extrapolate those few hints or suggestions and create a full character.”
He also credits the “brilliant” costume designer Arjun Bhasin. “The film starts in...

Mira Nair's controversial adaptation of Mohsin Hamid's novel 'The Reluctant Fundamentalist' is ready to roll this week in Atlanta, New York, Istanbul and Delhi. Interestingly, Mira has managed to get permission to shoot in Lahore where the novel is largely set. Riz Ahmed (Four Lions, Black Gold) stars in the lead role of Changez alongside Kate Hudson (Bride Wars, Nine, Something Borrowed), Liev Schreiber (Salt, X-Men: Origins, The Manchurian Candidate) and Kiefer Sutherland (24). Also appearing in the film are Nelsan Ellis, Martin Donovan. From India, Om Puri and Shabana Azmi who are regulars abroad but have never worked with Mira Nair, are also on board. Haluk Bilginer and Meesha Shafi also feature in prominent parts. Commenting on The Reluctant Fundamentalist, Nair said: "My father lived in Lahore before the partition of India and Pakistan. It is an industry notorious for its fickle relationships. Not long ago, Ayan Mukerji, whose debut feature, Wake Up Sid, was produced by Karan Johar. In a line-up of directors belonging to Dharma Productions, Ayan Mukerji even took the trouble to don a black suit and stand among his comrades from the Dharma camp.In a campy intrigue indeed this allegiance seems to have gone sour. After the rather public fallout between Rishi Kapoor and KJo thanks to the jabs that ex-lovers Deepika and Sonam made about Ranbir whilst fighting for that hamper on KJo's talk show Ayan Mukerji was caught in the cross-fire. Either choose Karan or Ranbir, Rishi Kapoor had told him (Mumbai Mirror, Nov 30 edition).Well, Ayan, it seems, has chosen Ranbir over Karan, something that is causing KJo a lot of heartburn. A top source from Bollywood told this paper last evening, "Ayan aur Karan...

Zoya Akhtar, who earlier this year made an impressive debut with Luck By Chance, is all set to start her second directorial venture Running With The Bulls (working title). While her first film had quite a few bigwigs of Bollywood make a fleeting appearance, her second film too has quite a stellar cast. Shooting for the film begins in January 2010 at various locations such as Greece, Turkey, Thailand, UK and India. Produced by Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar under their banner Excel Entertainment, the film will have lyrics by Javed Akhtar. Other crew members include Carlos Catalan as the Dop, Suzanne Caplan Merwanji as the Production Designer, Nandini Shrikent as the Casting Director and Arjun Bhasin as the Costume Designer. As ‘Little Zizou’ unfolds, one gets to see a world as seen by the 11 year old protagonist – Xerxes (Jahan Bativala) – a boy who just loves his football and looks forward to meet his icon Zinedane Zidane – on whose name he got his nickname – Zizou.
A motherless child born Zizou is brought up in a typical Parsi surrounding. He is the son of Cyrus II Khodaiji (Sohrab Ardeshir) an extremist who proclaims to be a spiritual healer thereby misleading the Parsi community for his own sake.
Through the portrayal Cyrus II Khodaiji (Sohrab Ardeshir) and Boman Presswala (Boman Irani) of fundamental and liberal Parsis, Sooni Taraporevala, who makes her directorial debut with the flick, is successful in highlighting a long drawn dispute among the Parisis.
However, the film does not dwell much upon the origin of Parsis except for the fact that Parsis came to India when Persia was attacked by the Arabs.
