A lot of film stars made handsome money even when the studio system was on when they were on the roster of one of the studios in Mumbai which made films at regular intervals. The studios engaged actors on a monthly pay and the stars, thus, had a reason to feel secure. If a star was becoming popular, he/she gained more.
All one needed was talent and education qualifications counted for little as far as what the stars earned. They made many times more than what a white-collar graduate earned working for some or the other company.
Then came the era of actors charging per film. The cost of filmmaking was moving from thousands to lakhs. The first thing that a successful star did when a regular income started was to invest in a house. And, the next acquisition was, of course, a car. Chevrolet and Impala were the...

Today I woke up with the info of the 97-year-old legend Chandrashekhar aka Chandrashekharji urf Chandrashekhar sahab breathing his last at his residence. He died peacefully in his sleep. A series of flashbacks started haunting me since I know Chandrashekharji personally as my father’s dear friend. As I am writing this memorial, people from the film industry and media fraternity will be offering respects and by the time you all will read this our dear Chandrashekharji’s last rites will be in process or done but memories which I hold as a person and as a film journalist will remain forever.
This is perhaps the most personal memorial for me of a person who I admired immensely as an individual / human more than anything else.
Born in Hyderabad on 7 July 1923, Chandrashekhar dropped out of college and moved to Mumbai with a diploma in western dancing from the UK. On recommendation from singer Shamshad Begum,...

Core business is a phrase that got familiar with the arrival of corporate houses in the film business. Which is to say, they would stick to the business they came to do and know it better, rather than branch out into other businesses that may look lucrative but you knew little about.
In the film industry, too, the jobs were marked out for people who specialised in or were trained for the task.
But, when it comes to the film industry, every aspirant hopes to become an actor to start with, and aim for stardom. But, there are also those who just want to be a part of the filmmaking process and train to be a cinematographer, choreographer, editor, sound recordist, action director and so on - loosely defined in film parlance as technician.

Talat Mehmood, the unparallel king of ghazal needs no introduction. His super hit ghazals like Sham-E-Gham Ki Qassam ....; Jalte Hain Jiske Liye .... Aye Mere Dil Kahin Aur Chal.... are immortal and shall continue to regale ghazal lovers for centuries to come.
However, readers would be stunned to know that though Talat Mehmood, who ruled the mid-40s and the 50s as the most sought after playback singer, had to face bitter competition in the 60s from emerging new talents like Mohammad Rafi, Mukesh, Kishore Kumar, Manna Dey, Mahendra Kapoor etc.
In fact, his popularity plunged so low that film distributers declined to accept his songs and music directors had to tragically re-record the song in other singers' voice. For instance, in Dilip Kumar's movie Aadmi, music maestro Naushad had recorded a duet on Dilip Kumar and Manoj Kumar.

Remember the super hit song Ajeeb Daastaan Hai Yeh..... from Meena Kumari's timeless classic Dil Apna Aur Preet Parai. Incidentally, the Daastaan (story) of Meena Kumari's life has suddenly become a hot piece of news since biopics are ruling the roost in Bollywood hence everybody is keen to exploit the life of the tragedy queen and mint money.
On one hand filmmaker Tigmanshu Dhulia has reportedly signed Queen actress Kangana Ranaut to play Meena Kumari in his film which is an adaption of the biography on Meena Kumari, penned by eminent late journalist Vinod Mehta.
On the other hand, interestingly, Meena Kumari's step-son Tajdar Amrohi, son of Kamal Amrohi from his first wife, is also making a movie titled Meena Baa Kamaal (Meena - the extraordinary). Initially Manisha Koirala was announced to play the lead but she declined the offer and now a new actress would play the part.

Bheja Fry 3, for those who are interested, is delayed until that time when director Sagar Ballary cracks a screenplay worthy of that fascinating bore Bharat Bhushan's return trip. In September, Ballary starts another film. Entitled Guftagoo, this is a chamber piece with only 6 characters. Sagar has signed his old favourite Vinay Pathak and Pathak's best friend Ranvir Shorey for two of the roles. But the most important part of the film is to be played by a 30-plus leading lady whom Ballary has already sounded out for the part. Says Ballary, "I wouldn't like to mention her name yet until she has signed the film. But it'd be a dream-come-true to work with her. Luckily for me she likes my work, has seen Bheja Fry 2 and called me to congratulate me after seeing it." Sagar wants to cast this iconic actress and his old favourite Rajat Kapoor as man and wife in Gufatgoo.

Mumbai: Director Sagar Ballary seems to have tickled the funny bone of audience with his latest Bheja Fry-2 but has rubbed shoulders the wrong way with the Censor Board. Irked by a scene in the film which has Vinay Pathak (Bharat Bhushan) explaining the best positions in love-making to a couple, the Censors has directed the scene to be chopped off from the movie.
Bharat who seems to have a solution for every conceivable issue on the face of the earth, is shown in the scene as advising the correct position in love-making.

A sequel like this one banks on a loyal audience that contributed to making Bheja Fry a sleeper hit in 2007. This reviewer is not a part of that audience. Leaving aside the fact that it was a copy of The Dinner Game, I found the humor pedestrian and the proceedings simply annoying. Bheja Fry 2 is simply listless.

It's bank-heist film tentatively called A Simple Plan. But the plan, if we must know, is not so simple. Director Sagar Ballary has cast Vinay Pathak, Ranvir Shorey and Arshad Warsi as bank robbers in a film that belongs to the same genre as Oceans Eleven. Add to this casting brew the F.A.L.T.U star, Jackky Bhagnani. And we have a boy's film that could give Abbas-Mustan's Players, the desi Italian Job a run for its (robbed) money. Says Sagar, "I've three really fine actors Vinay, Ranvir and Arshad. And Jackky I was really impressed with when I met him. He's gone to acting school abroad. He understands cinema." Sagar has cast Jackky as a suave blackmailer. "It's a complex role and I am sure Jackky can pull it off." The film takes Sagar Ballary a distance from the Bheja Fry films. "After Bheja Fry 2 releases, I need to move into a completely different zone.
