How would you handle coming face to face with your attacker? Sam H. Freeman and Ng Choon Ping’s “Femme” takes that very question — and the revenge story that follows — to a new level, as it follows a lauded drag artist (Nathan Stewart-Jarrett) who crosses paths with his homophobic assaulter (George MacKay) in a gay bathhouse months after his terrible attack. What transpires is an unexpected tale of forgiveness, empathy, and yes, even violence.
The official synopsis for the film reads: “With his performances as Aphrodite Banks, Jules (Nathan Stewart-Jarrett) has a place among London’s celebrated drag artists. One night after a show, he steps out to get some cigarettes and is brutally attacked by a man (George MacKay) out with a gang of his friends. Although Jules is able to recover physically, he withdraws from the outside world, traumatized. Months later, he recognizes his attacker by chance in a gay sauna.

Unrecognizable out of his wig and make-up, Jules infiltrates Preston’s life, and in doing so, discovers power in a different kind of drag.
In a statement, the directors said: “The seed of ‘Femme’ came from our desire to flip the classic hyper-masculinity of the neo-noir thriller on its head. By putting a queer protagonist at the heart of our revenge story, we...

Olivia Colman is captivating in the first trailer for Maggie Gyllenhaal’s directorial debut, “The Lost Daughter.”
The upcoming drama, based on Elena Ferrante’s novel of the same name, stars Colman as Leda, a middle-aged woman vacationing alone and having flashbacks to her days as a young wife and mother (with her younger self played by Jessie Buckley). Gyllenhaal wrote, directed and produced the movie.
In the trailer, Colman, whose character is on a “working holiday,” meets Dakota Johnson’s Nina, telling her she has two daughters of her own. She soon tells the young mother that “children are a crushing responsibility.”
The trailer also gives audiences a glimpse at Buckley, but if anything, it teases the captivating performance Colman delivers that will surely land her in the awards conversation as the race for best actress heats up.
The cast also includes Dagmara Domińczyk as Callie, Peter Sarsgaard as Professor Hardy,...
