Once married to Meredith Baxter (Elyse Keaton on
Family Ties (1982)), whom he met while filming their
television series Bridget Loves Bernie (1972) in 1972. They
have three children: a daughter, Kate, and twins named Mollie and Peter (b. 1984).
He holds a B.A. in English from Dartmouth College and an M.A. in
Theatre from UCLA.
For five years, he chaired the American Diabetes Association.
A long-time spokesperson for children's and educational issues.
Has been battling Alzheimer's disease since 2017.
Served on the Dartmouth College Board of Overseers for the Hopkins
Center for the Performing Arts.
Father was an FBI special agent.
Although one of his earliest TV roles was that of Bernie Steinberg, a
Jewish man who falls in love with an Irish woman, he is Irish himself
and was once the Grand Marshal of the parade for the Irish Faire held
in Burbank, CA, in the late 1980s.
Has twice been a panelist for the National Endowment for the Arts.
