If you are doubting yourself or having a bad day at the office, remember that it happens to everyone, even Kevin Costner. After a string of successive hits throughout the 1980s, Costner became one of Hollywood's biggest names. But actors are people too, so just like every "regular Joe" Costner found himself nervous on the first day of a new job.
In 1990, the actor moved behind the camera to try his hand at directing with "Dances With Wolves." The film is based on the Michael Blake novel of the same name and was an incredibly ambitious project for the novice director. The result was a three-hour epic featuring wild animals, authentic Lakota dialogue, stunning visuals, and rich character development.
With a quote custom-made for the film's ad campaign, the Washington Post declared the project, "One of the year's most satisfying and audaciously entertaining films." But you might not have known...

Michael Blake, the Academy Award-winning screenwriter, has passed away at 69-years-old after a long health battle, according to Deadline. Blake catapulted into stardom after adapting the screenplay for Dances With Wolves in 1990—which earned him the Oscar. History has it that Kevin Costner was responsible for convincing Blake to adapt the screenplay from the novel of the same name. The two met while working on Stacey's Knights—which Blake had written as well. Costner famously directed and starred in the hit film, and won for Best Director as well as Best Picture. Shortly thereafter, Costner requested that Blake write two other screenplays for him, The Mick and The...

Michael Blake, who wrote the novel Dances With Wolves and penned its subsequent film treatment, has died at 69, Variety reports.Blake spent his childhood in Texas and Southern California, where he became enamored with the story of the southwest. He studied journalism briefly before switching to film at the University of New Mexico. He then pursued a career in screenwriting. Only one of Blake’s screenplays made it to the big screen in the 1980s, but that film, Stacy’s Knights, starred Kevin Costner, who proved instrumental to Blake’s career. Costner convinced Blake to write the novel Dances With Wolves, which subsequently sold 3.5 million copies and was translated into 15 languages. Costner, of course, directed and starred in the 1990 cinematic adaptation for which Blake won an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay. The novel and film depict a Union Army Lieutenant in the Civil War-era west who meets a group of...

Dances with Wolves screenwriter Michael Blake has been hired to script the adaptation of German author Karl May's western book series Winnetou. This wouldn't be the first time the book series was adapted into feature film form. There were nearly a dozen western genre films that were made from 1962-1968. The film's starred French actor Pierre Brice as the Apache chief and American Lex Barker as his friend and blood brother Old Shatterhand.
Winnetou is a fictional story that is told in the first-person by the narrator Old Shatterhand who encounters Apache chief, Winnetou, "and after initial dramatic events, a true friendship between Old Shatterhand and Winnetou arises; on many occasions they give proof of great fighting skill but also of compassion for other human beings. He seemed the epitome of the All-American Good Guy: Kevin Costner was the original King of the World in 1989, when he put his career on the line to make an (ugh) Western. A three-hour (ugh) Western at that, and not just to star in: he was directing for the first time. He gambled, won and became our new Gary Cooper. But what happened? When he’s not flitting in and out of marriages, he keeps showing up in the most random B-pictures (Mr. Brooks? The Guardian? Seriously? Were these supposed to be comebacks?), along with doing his part to clean the Bp Gulf spill with ocean-cleaning technology he’s been pouring money into for a decade.
Where’s the Kevin Costner we grew up with? Let’s take a look at his career.

Chicago – Can anyone else believe that it’s been 20 years since “Dances With Wolves”? In a lot of movie snob circles, the Kevin Costner epic has been relegated to a tragic tale as the thing most remembered about it is that it stole several Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director, from a movie that even Costner himself would probably now admit deserved them more — “GoodFellas.” Watching it again after so long, it’s easy to see what people liked about the film. It may not have deserved Best Picture but it’s still a worthy addition to many a movie lover’s collection.

Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps (20th Century Fox) Sequel to the seminal 1980s film catches up with a weathered, but still determined Gordon Gekko (Michael Douglas, who seems to savor every syllable of Allan Loeb and Stephen Schiff’s screenplay) just out of jail and back on the comeback trail. In attempting to repair his relationship with his estranged daughter (Carey Mulligan), Gekko forges a reluctant alliance with her fiancé (Shia Labeouf), himself an ambitious young turk who finds himself seduced by Gekko’s silver tongue and promise of riches. Lifeless film is further evidence of director Oliver Stone’s decline. Once America’s most exciting filmmaker, Stone hasn’t delivered a film with any teeth since 1995’s Nixon. Labeouf and Mulligan generate no sparks on-screen, and the story feels forced from the protracted opening to the final, Disney-esque denouement. Only a brief cameo by Charlie Sheen,...

A truly strange cow punk flick, "Bad Day" just surfaced 24 years after it was shot by Modi Frank and Exene Cervenka of the L.A. punk band, X. It features legends like X bassist and frontman John Doe, The Flesh Eaters singer Chris D, and Grammy winner Dave Alvin, who also scored the film -- which is silent. Also featured, and this is probably the best part, are Michael Blake and Kevin Costner.
Blake would go on to win an Oscar for writing "Dances with Wolves" in 1990, which Costner directed and starred in, and also took home two Oscars for Best Director and Best Picture. But when "Bad Day" was shot in 1986, Costner was a punk who'd had his scenes deleted from "The Big Chill" and had only just appeared in Lawrence Kasdan's "Silverado." Kevin Costner's Oscar-winning movie Dances With Wolves is set to hit the Broadway stage - as a musical.
Producer Matt Murphy has acquired the stage rights to Michael Blake’s 1986 bestselling novel and now intends to adapt the book into a dramatic musical for the Broadway stage.
Murphy says, "Dances With Wolves will be a uniquely spectacular and dramatic new musical. I envision a score that is inspired by Appalachian, folk, Civil War era, and Native American music, coupled with a production design that celebrates the spirit and ceremony of Native American culture amidst the awe-inspiring landscape of the American frontier.
"I am seeking a creative team who can make the epic story of Dances With Wolves sing for a new medium and a new generation of audiences."
Costner played Lieutenant John Dunbar, who became accepted by the Sioux Indians, in the 1990 movie, which he also directed.
The film won Oscars for Best Cinematography, Best Director, Best Film Editing, Best Original Score, Best Picture, Best Sound and Best Adapted Screenplay.

We've all been eagerly anticipating this flick, and while we've hounded the production folks to give us a copy of the promo trailer, we haven't seen anything yet. However, we do know that the film has been renamed The Last City. And to boot, we've got some extended info:
Synopsis:
Year: 2070
The ancient prophecies of hell on earth came true with a vengeance at the end of the Age of Pisces when apocalyptic solar flares brought the modern world to its knees. With the ozone layer decimated, the sun penetrated land and sea. It got hot. Very hot. The rivers dried, the oceans turned to salt, and the Earth was showered with relentless fire. In the aftermath, a chain reaction of chaos engulfed the planet and mankind devoured everything. All that remained was The Last City, formerly the pinnacle of the modern world, now reduced to an urban graveyard of sand,...

Perhaps Kevin Costner has lined up a film worth watching after the dismal Swing Vote last year and films such as Mr. Brooks, The Guardian and Rumor Has It... rounding out his last four films. However, an indie feature with Tommy Lee Jones sounds interesting as the two will star in The Company Men, joining the already cast Ben Affleck . The film is described as a drama about the impact a corporate downsizing has on both its casualties and survivors. Affleck plays a corporate hotshot whose Porsche and six-figure salary vanish after he gets laid off. Costner plays his brother-in-law, a salt-of-the-earth drywall installer who gives him a construction job. Jones plays a senior partner in the firm, a principled man who struggles with the greedy actions of his partners. John Wells wrote the script and will direct. Production begins in April in Boston. On top of this news we...

AMC is developing a slate of miniseries with an eye toward following up on the success of its first effort in the genre, Broken Trail.
The Rainbow Media Holdings-owned cable channel is looking to try its hand at a war epic, with projects in consideration from such scribes as Michael Blake (Dances With Wolves), Michael Nankin (Battlestar Galactica) and John Leckley (Spawn).
AMC is looking to have its next miniseries in production by year's end for broadcast in 2008. The goal is to get the audience and acclaim that followed Trail, a Western starring Robert Duvall that was the highest-rated longform program on cable in 2006.
"Viewers really noticed projects of intelligence and high quality, and we are focused on producing only those for AMC," said Rob Sorcher, executive vp programming and production.
Among the projects in development include the Civil War drama Against the Guns of Quantrill, from Blake and executive producer Lou Morheim (The Magnificent Seven); Berlin Mesa, a drama about Nazis attempting to steal nuclear secrets, from Michael Frost Beckner (Spygame) and executive producer John Baldecchi (The Mexican); L-19, a fact-based drama on a German Zeppelin crash during World War I, from William Brookfield (Close Your Eyes) and executive producers Gub Neal and Justin Thompson (Case of Evil); and White Rose, revolving around a youth uprising in Nazi Germany, from Leekley, who would also executive produce.
