A killer book (Dog Soldiers) must hide behind a Credence Clearwater tune. Karel Reisz’s killer movie about the moral residue of Vietnam scores as both drama and action, as disillusioned counterculture smugglers versus corrupt narcotics cops. Just don’t expect it to really have much to say about the Vietnam experience. But hey, the cast is tops — Nick Nolte, Richard Masur, Anthony Zerbe — and the marvelous Tuesday Weld is even better as a pill-soaked involuntary initiate into the pre- War On Drugs smuggling scene.

In the decades since its premiere, The French Lieutenant’s Woman is now most commonly discussed for its placement in the extensive awards resume of its star Meryl Streep, since it was her follow-up to her Best Supporting Actress win for 1979’s Kramer vs. Kramer and would serve as netting her first nomination in a leading category (it’s also interesting to note Streep won the Golden Globe but ultimately, perhaps ironically, lost to Katharine Hepburn, the iconic performer who previously held the most nominations record). But at the time of its release, the final product was the result of a decade long ordeal, seeing many auteurs, actors, and screenwriters attempting to adapt the notoriously ‘unfilmable’ 1969 novel by John Fowles, an experiment in form termed “post-modern historical fiction.” Directed by Karel Reisz, the Czech-born British auteur a British New Wave progenitor of the realist strain of filmmaking, it remains one of his most prolific works.

My love of all things Chainsaw knows no bounds. I love the movie and everything about it. I think it’s a time capsule of an era of filmmaking we’ll probably never see again. I also think it’s still one of the scariest damned movies ever made.
Having said that (repeatedly) I should also point out that this means I watch and read just about everything I can on the film. That means documentaries and books, and I’m always on the lookout for reviews and interviews. One of my faves is by John Bloom that’s floating around the internet.
It’s not exactly that hard these days to find stuff on Chainsaw. It used to take some serious searching through old Fangorias and Gorezones to find little bits of info. Now all it takes is wi fi or a dvd player.

Comedian Nick Thune has been cast as the male lead in NBC's comedy pilot I Hate That I Love You. The single-camera project, from writer/exec producer Jhoni Marchinko and 20th TV, is described as a twisty romantic comedy in which a straight couple, Brad (Thune) and Missy, introduce their lesbian roommates, Brad's Allie and Missy's Sarah (Anna Camp), to each other. Earlier this season, Thune was attached to another NBC comedy project, an ensemble show penned by Spike Feresten. Thune, repped by Wme and 3 Arts, has a Web series, Nick's Big Show. As the nominations were unveiled Tuesday morning for the American Cinema Editors' 60th annual Ace Eddie Awards, this year's awards season is looking more and more like a Hollywood version of Comic-Con.
Just like the Art Directors Guild, the editors organization nominated "Avatar," "District 9" and "Star Trek."
Those three movies will compete for best edited dramatic feature film along with "The Hurt Locker" and "Up in the Air."
Two Meryl Streep vehicles -- "Julie & Julia" and "It's Complicated" -- were nominated in the best comedy or musical category along with "(500) Days of Summer," "The Hangover" and "A Serious Man."
For best animated film, the contenders are "Coraline," "Fantastic Mr. Fox" and "Up."
"This Is It," the Michael Jackson documentary, scored a slot in Ace's best documentary race alongside "The Cove" and "Food, Inc."
An honorary society of motion picture editors founded in 1950, Ace's noms usually point toward Oscar victory...
