Stars: Kimberly-Sue Murray | Features the voices of: Shaun Benson, Stephen Bogaert, Ellen Dubin, Samora Smallwood, Art Hindle | Written and Directed by Corey Stanton
From the opening shot panning downstairs into a basement apartment, writer/director Corey Stanton establishes the sole location his film occurs within. A phone call is taking place, as a lone woman (Kimberly-Sue Murray) enacts fraud to access a man’s credit card details and prescription information. She uses this to stock up on pills and buy expensive products, selling the latter to fund her passion; stock market trading.
Following his 2018 feature-debut, Robbery, Stanton crafts a chamber piece about one character’s desire to rise above the rock-bottom situation and location she wishes to leave behind. As the story stays in the basement setting, the film must find ways to make the inescapable situation appear cinematic. This is achieved by going inward, terrifically visualising the inner workings...

[Note: With the film debuting on Shudder today, here’s a reposting of our review of horror comedy Slaxx, from its festival run last year]
Back in 2010 writer/director Quentin Dupieux brought forth Rubber on an unsuspecting genre audience. That film, about a tyre that killed people – not by running them over but by using telekinesis… I mention Rubber as it seems that film now has a cinematic sibling in Slaxx. A film about another homicidal inanimate object… a killer pair of jeans. Literally.
At Canadian Cotton Clothiers the flagship store staff is preparing for ‘Monday Madness’. For joining the range of supposedly organic, Gmo-free, fair-trade, ethically sourced tops and bottoms is the eagerly awaited new line of Super Shaper designer jeans – thermally activated denim that adapts to any body size.

Following its world premiere at Fantasia, and ahead of its March 18th release on Shudder, Elza Kephart's horror comedy Slaxx is featured in a new trailer that showcases the film's killer pair of possessed jeans.
"A possessed pair of jeans is brought to life to punish the unscrupulous practices of a trendy clothing company. Shipped to the company’s flagship store, Slaxx proceeds to wreak carnage on staff locked in overnight to set up the new collection.
Starring Romane Denis (Slut in a Good Way), Brett Donahue (Private Eyes), Sehar Bhojani (The Handmaid’s Tale), and Stephen Bogaert (The Umbrella Academy).
The third feature from Canadian director Elza Kephart, Slaxx is co-written by Kephart and Patricia Gomez (Graveyard Alive), and produced by Gomez alongside Anne-Marie Gélinas, and executive produced by Shaked Berenson.

Shudder, AMC’s horror and thriller-focused streaming platform, announced a lineup of 11 films set to premiere over the next 11 weeks.
The selection of Shudder Originals coming to Shudder include Sundance Film Festival selections, as well as Tribeca Film Festival selections and a host of new content, as well. The first project to join the streaming site will be “Hunted,” a take on the Little Red Riding Hood story that is set to premiere Jan. 14.
Other movies joining Shudder hail from the genres of psychological horror to thriller, with themes exploring technology, nature, gender and betrayal. “Lucky,” coming on March 4, will detail the difficulties one woman faces after discovering that she has a stalker. And “A Nightmare Wakes” will give life to Mary Shelley in a period piece about the famous author.
The final film in the 11-week lineup is “Violation,” which both ran at Sundance and the Toronto International Film Festival.

Exclusive: Michael Peña, Carolina Bartczak, Maxim Roy and Stephen Bogaert are on board for the Roland Emmerich-helmed sci-fi epic Moonfall, joining an A-list ensemble that includes Halle Berry, Patrick Wilson, John Bradley, Eme Ikwuakor, Charlie Plummer and Donald Sutherland.

Much of The Umbrella Academy's second season revolves around the Hargreeves' attempt to stop the end of the world in 1963 Dallas. But after the siblings avert the events that they believe lead to the apocalypse - the assassination of John F. Kennedy and Vanya's (Ellen Page) wrath - they set off another dangerous threat seething in a boy named Harlan (Justin Paul Kelly).
We first meet Harlan when his mother, Sissy (Marin Ireland), accidentally hits Vanya with her car when the confused time traveler arrives from the future. Vanya, who suffers from amnesia after the incident, is taken in by Sissy and her perverse husband, Carl (Stephen Bogaert). The couple hire Vanya as a caretaker for Harlan, who's on the autism spectrum, and the two form a close bond. Shortly after Vanya is attacked by the Swedes - a trio of brothers who are hunting down the Hargreeves children...

Some friends get together to play games, watch movies, eat food, play sports, and lots of other things. But when the group of friends in this trailer for the upcoming horror film, Extracurricular, get together they enjoy killing people in elaborate ways. That’s their little hobby, and as you might expect, with a hobby like this, you know things are going to go wrong.
Here’s the synopsis:
Miriam, Derek, Ian, and Jenny are overachieving high school students and friends doing everything by the book. Straight A's, sports, yearbook, band, and - when coursework allows - planning and executing elaborate murders. But when one of their plans goes shockingly awry, the relationship between the group is put to the test.
The horror thriller comes from director Ray Xue (Transcendent) ,and stars Keenan Tracey, Brittany Raymond, Spencer Macpherson, Brittany Teo, Stephen Bogaert, Emmanuel Kabongo, and Luke Goss.

"Did you see the look on that lady's face?!" Samuel Goldwyn Films has debuted an official trailer for an indie horror film titled Extracurricular, the latest feature from filmmaker Ray Xue (Transcendent). This horror-thriller originally premiered at the Toronto After Dark Film Festival last year, only now getting a direct-to-vod release in January for those still interested. Four overachieving high school students and best friends have a secret pastime: planning and executing murders (while wearing different masks). But when one of their plans goes shockingly awry, the relationship between them is put to the test. Starring Keenan Tracey, Brittany Raymond, Spencer Macpherson, Brittany Teo, Stephen Bogaert, Emmanuel Kabongo, and Luke Goss. This looks way darker than expected, not much comedy, nothing but murders. Here's the first official trailer (+ two posters) for Ray Xue's Extracurricular, direct from YouTube: Miriam, Derek, Ian, and Jenny are overachieving high school students and friends doing everything by the book.

Four high school seniors feel their day-to-day lives at school are getting a little dull. So they made a pact to plan and execute a series of perfect, elaborate murders and get some thrills behind them before heading off to college. However when their latest homicidal plan hits some unexpected speed bumps, the situation turns deadly, violent and bloody.
In the same vein as Tragedy Girls, Extracurricular essentially tells that same story as The Strangers (and a multitude of other home invasion/slasher movies) but from the perspective of the masked killers rather than their victims. That these killers happen to be a small group of high-school kids only adds to the depth of this particular tale… and one that...

Stephen King’s bumper 1986 novel gets the fully-fledged cinematic treatment courtesy of Mama director Andy Muschietti, and screenwriters Chase Palmer, Cary Fukunaga and Gary Dauberman. It’s a rollicking ghost train of a teen horror; an overflowing toy box of shocker setpieces, jolting jump scares and pop culture allusions.
In keeping with the original story’s dual-timeline structure, this adaptation has relocated the childhood part of the story from the 1950s to the 1980s. (One could argue that the ‘80s has – in the quality of its idyllic nostalgia – now almost become the new ‘50s).

Despite the open(ish) ending of the first Antisocial, when this sequel was announced I did wonder in just what direction Chad Archibald, Cody Calahan and the Black Fawn Films crew would take the film. After all, the original film was a one location, claustrophic horror flick that – I thought – had a finite story.

Director: Cody Calahan. Writers: Cody Calahan, Chad Archibald, Jeff Maher. Cast: Michelle Mylett, Josette Halpert, Stephen Bogaert. Cody Calahan and Chad Archibald of Black Fawn Films reunite in the sequel to 2013's Antisocial. This viewer is not a fan of the first film, so we already got off on the wrong foot but, having enjoyed Black Fawn's recent release, Bite, there was still hope for redemption. Unfortunately, even with some great atmospheric shots and some decent gore, Antisocial 2, much like the first, is simply uninteresting. While the message that social media turns people into zombies has potential, the concept is overthought and under-executed thus rendering it powerless. Michelle Mylett as Sam in Antisocial's final scene. The plot in the second film is driven by an update being installed on the social media site, The Social Redroom. The update will supposedly force everyone to become users—to connect. Suffice it to say,...

Mark takes a look at new six-part Netflix original sci-fi drama, Between, and finds it lacking in nuance...
This review contains spoilers.
1.1 School's Out
I agreed to review Between for two reasons; Daredevil was rather good, and at only six episodes long, I could handle the tedium if it wasn’t.
After watching the first episode, I can say with some certainty that this isn’t anything crafted remotely like Daredevil, and it harks back to an era of network TV that I’d thought we’d left behind long ago.
It starts with a rather dire future where almost half of Pretty Lake’s population is dead, and then rewinds to ten days before to explain how this happened. It doesn’t present any plausible explanation of the deaths, instead filling its time parading a series of increasingly uninteresting and loathsome characters who we’re supposed to identify with before Between is done.

In our ever-more-fragmented media landscape, we're seeing fewer and fewer recognizable brand-name stars for *everybody*, but we're probably getting more and more recognizable brand-name stars for *somebody*. And that means that people who, to certain individuals, are clearly stars of a certain stature are virtual unknowns to great masses, possibly to majorities. And that's even the case with culture-watching professionals. Take Britt Robertson. I didn't see many "Tomorrowland" reviews calling her an unknown or even a newcomer, thankfully, but plenty of critics are still bending over backwards to reference credits like "Dan in Real Life" or "Delivery Man" as if audiences may struggle to place her. I hear her name and I think of an actress who has been the unquestioned star of at least two network TV shows and one of the stars (if only for a for a season) of a bona fide hit. In the sphere of what I do,...

One episode was provided for reviewing purposes prior to broadcast.
Between is the most un-Netflix show that the streaming service has ever aired, and it seems to want audiences to know that. Instead of following the company’s traditional model of releasing every episode at once, this Canadian import (airing there on City and Shomi) is rolling out one episode a week, in a strategy that’s sure to infuriate subscribers of all ages who have grown accustomed to binge-watching. Upon watching the pilot (the only episode made available for review), however, it becomes clear why Netflix is diverging from its attention-getting tactics for this series – the streaming service is hoping to sweep it under the rug as quietly as possible.
Aimed squarely at the teen demographic responsible for keeping The 100 and Teen Wolf on the air, Between feels much more like the kind of show that would be...

Bloodwork Trailer, Phase One Trailer. Eric Wostenberg‘s Phase One (2011) movie trailer stars Tricia Helfer, Travis Van Winkle, Mircea Monroe, John Bregar, and Joe Pingue. Bloodwork / Phase One‘s plot synopsis: “Best friends Greg and Rob, college roommates, decide to earn a little extra cash by participating in a two-week pharmaceutical test over the Christmas holidays. Locked into a remote hospital facility far out in the isolated countryside, they find themselves part of a bizarre series of tests. But as order and control start to break down, it becomes clear that drugs are having increasingly dangerous side effects, and that no one involved in the test will be safe for long.”
