To celebrate the release of Basket Case on Limited Edition 4K Ultra HD Blu-Ray available from 29th April, we have a Limited Edition 4K Ultra HD Blu-Ray to give away to a lucky winner!
The feature debut of director Frank Henenlotter, 1982’s Basket Case is a riotous and blood-spattered “midnight movie” experience, now presented for the first time ever on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray.
Duane Bradley seems like a pretty ordinary guy. His formerly conjoined twin Belial, on the other hand, is a deformed creature who lives in a wicker basket. Arriving in the Big Apple and taking up a room at a seedy hotel, the pair set about hunting down and butchering the surgeons responsible for their separation.
Filmed on a shoestring budget against the backdrop of 1980s New York (where it played on the midnight movie circuit for over two-and-a-half years), Basket Case has clawed its way from...

Classic Midnite Cult movies were a mini-phenomenon chosen by the public, created only by word of mouth approval. Frank Henenlotter’s wild ‘n’ weird ‘separated at birth’ story is a thematic mashup of horror ideas, plunked down in the middle of America’s sleaze capital, 42nd street in the early 1980s. The audience-pleasing telepathic siblings Duane and Belial look fantastic in a new MoMa restoration, and the extras let the flamboyant director recount a great making-of story. His first distributor decided to ‘fix’ the movie by removing most of the gore!

February’s horror and sci-fi home media titles are coming to a close this week, but before we can bid adieu to the month, there are a bounty of cult classics (and a few notable new films) coming our way on Tuesday that fans should definitely keep an eye out for. Arrow Video is keeping busy with a pair of limited edition Blu-rays for Scalpel and Frank Henenlotter’s original Basket Case, and Tibor Takacs’ Gate II is being resurrected in HD via the fine folks at Scream Factory.
Vinegar Syndrome has put together a limited edition Blu for Prey, and Michele Soavi’s The Sect comes home this week too, courtesy of Scorpion Releasing. 1982. What a year. From The Beast Within to Creepshow to Friday the 13th Part III to Q, it displayed a smorgasbord of fantastical delights for terror consumers. Standing heads (two, to be exact) and shoulders apart from the crowd was Frank Henenlotter’s grimeball debut, Basket Case, a lovely tale of a boy and his twin brother. Who happens to be a monstrous blob. And lives in a basket.
Shot on 16mm for a reported $35,000 Us, Basket Case premiered in Henenlotter’s beloved Times Square, and became a big hit on the grindhouse circuit. This shouldn’t be surprising, as the film is a big, fat, wet kiss to the pre-cleanup New York of the ’80s (think diseases, not Disney). Critics at the time acknowledged the uniqueness of it, but most could not overlook the technical deficiencies or the broad range of performances on display. No matter. Horror fans that...

An upcoming documentary you definitely should know about, courtesy of the Graveyard Shift Sisters blog (which celebrates Black women and women of color in the horror and sci-fi). Titled "My Final Girl: The Black Women of 70s Horror Cinema," from director Kristina Leath-Malin, the film surveys the American horror film tradition of the 1970s through early 1980s with focus on the contributions made by black women. Currently in post-production, the film features notable artists of the period, as well as scholars like: Marlene Clark, Beverly Bonner, Gloria Gifford, Pam Grier, Dr. Robin Means-Coleman, Dr. Isabel Pinedo, Sam Waymon, Dolores Smith, and many more. This is definitely a...

One of the reasons why we love horror films is the dangerous sex appeal – especially in slasher films from the 80s. Although most teenagers in these slasher films suffer brutal deaths after they engage in such sexy behaviors, there is something still strangely and erotically appealing about sex in these horror films. But what about the monster sex scenes? Do they have the same effect on spectators? Are monster scenes sexy? Maybe we’re getting too far ahead of ourselves - what qualifies as a monster sex scene? For the purposes of this list, I am only examining non-human sex – although one human might be involved in the act, at least one monster must be present: whether it be a re-animated head without a body, a creature with several legs, an alien, a ghoulie; basically anything that isn’t human and has undergone some process of “evil-i-zation” qualifies as a...

My love of Basket Case didn’t officially occur until its sequel – when the deformed brother of Duane Bradley (Kevin VanHentenryck), Belial, finally met the “girl” of his dreams. However, the original Basket Case has a lot to offer, and I’ve chosen it for the second installment of Terror Tapes because for many of us, Basket Case (directed by Frank Henelotter) was the reason we fell in love with horror in the first place. You probably have memories of walking into the video store, stepping into the horror section and falling in love with the font on the video cover, dripping with blood, and a horrendous face peeking out from inside a basket. That was the Media Home VHS box. Or perhaps your video store carried the Palace Version VHS with Duane on the cover, carrying the basket, with some of the sleaziest signs from New York’s 42nd Street in the background.

Finally, a new Don Coscarelli movie! After years of waiting, the cult auteur comes back with a lively adaptation of David Wong’s popular novel. A drug that induces an out-of-body experience sends its users across time and other dimensions. When some of them come back not quite human, an otherworldly invasion is set into motion. Suddenly, college dropouts John (Rob Mayes) and Dave (Chase Williamson) find themselves in an epic battle to save the world. Coscarelli’s surreal visual flair and black comic bent are in full effect here. Hopefully, its critical success will ensure that the beloved filmmaker won't have to wait another ten years to make a film.

Frank Henenlotter’s Basket Case from 1982 was a seedy little fever dream of a film with operatic violence and a pitch black sense of humor. It told the twisted grindhouse tale of the Bradley brothers, Siamese twins crudely separated against their will by a team of doctors (and one veterinarian). Duane (Kevin Van Hentenryck), the more physically "normal" of the two, was saved while his deformed other half, Belial, was put in a trash bag and left for dead on the street. Duane, who shared a telepathic link with his lumpy twin, saved the still-breathing Belial. A few years later the two began to hunt down (and savagely mutilate) the surgical team responsible for their separation. The appropriately downbeat ending gave it a fable-like resonance and...

Erie, Pa. -- Economic protesters were sidelined in downtown Erie last weekend, when ghosts and ghouls occupied the city's famed Warner Theatre. No, there was no zombie outbreak -- at least not this time around -- but a celebration of all things frightful by like-minded fans at the 8th annual Eerie Horror Film Festival.
The four-day festival and expo featured dozens of films, screenings, celebrity appearances and a variety of booths selling books, posters, clothing and collectibles.
Two of the big draws to this year's festival were guest appearances by Alexander Vincent and Norman Reedus.
Vincent was 6 years old in 1988 when he played the role of Andy Barclay in the 1988 horror film "Child's Play." He also starred in the 1990 sequel, "Child’s Play 2." Vincent, now 30, said he was not traumatized by starring in the films opposite "Chucky," a doll possessed by the soul of a mass murderer.

A man carrying his deformed seamise twin in an oversized basket seeks revenge against the doctors who surgically separated them.
Odd, odd film and not in a good way. To Basket Case's credit, the film certainly commits to creating this sleazy environment filled with oddball characters, but beyond the film's sleazy proceedings, there isn't a single character to care about in sight. Yeah, the viewer knows that the two main characters were forced into a tragic circumstance in regards to the surgical procedure, but their isn't an ounce of sympathy towards either character and what they had to endure, because neither character is likable. Due to that, the revenge that they inflict upon their tormentors lacks satisfaction since we really don't care what happened to them in the first place.

“What’s in the basket?” is the constant refrain of Frank Henenlotter’s feature directorial debut, Basket Case, a cult film from 1981. Duane Bradley and his brother Belial are in New York City on a mission: to get revenge on the doctors who separated them as children.
No, they weren’t put into different foster homes. They were conjoined twins, and at the behest of their father were surgically separated. Did I mention that Belial is just a mass of flesh with two arms and a face that used to grow out of Duane’s side? And now Duane keeps him in a basket?
If I were to read this film’s synopsis I would instantly think that’s it’s nothing but campy fun, but it is surprisingly more than that. Kevin Van Hentenryck plays Duane with a great deal of care, that isn’t typical of this kind of production.

Image and Something Weird will premiere the Blu-ray edition of the 1982 bizarre horror cult favorite Basket Case on September 27 for a list price of $17.97.
I told you not to drink that tequila!: Belial comes out to play in Basket Case.
Written and directed by Frank Henenlotter, the movie follows a drifter named Duane (Kevin Van Hentenryck) who carries a mysterious wicker basket wherever he goes. Basket Case A young director by the name of Frank Henenlotter (Frankenhooker) came to New York with big ambition, a one of a kind vision and a tiny budget on which to make his unique brand of horror. The result of that endeavor was Basket Case, a horror film that has gained a cult following, two sequels and still has people talking about it 29 years after the fact! Basket Case vividly brought gore, sleaze, a twisted sense of humor, and even some animation to the screen, but most importantly it did something so completely different that it still stands out as a film unlike anything else in the horror genre. By going against the grain, Basket Case broke the mold. Now it is our pleasure to announce that Basket Case will finally be making its way to Blu-Ray!

Written and directed by Frank Henenlotter, a master of the low-budget B-horror movie, Basket Case (1982) tells the story of Duane (Kevin Van Hentenryck—a Henenlotter regular) a naïve young man who carries around a basket containing his deformed brother Belial. Duane and Belial were conjoined twins whose birth caused the death of their mother. At around the age of twelve the twins were separated against their will at the urging of their father. Now Duane has brought Belial to New York City to find the doctors who performed the surgery and exact their revenge.
Belial is kept hidden because of his severe deformity. It was hoped by the boys’ father that Belial would die after the surgery, but he survived. The brothers have a telepathic connection and are extremely close. Things complicate matters for Duane when he meets Sharon (Terri Susan Smith) whom he likes…...

Rapper-turned-filmmaker R.A. Thorburn, a.k.a. “The Rugged Man” and the producer/co-writer of Frank Henenlotter’s Bad Biology, dropped Fango a line with details and some gruesome set photos (see ’em below) from his first feature as a director. Titled God Take, God Give, it’s “an insane mockumentary,” according to Thorburn, based on the life of his father, Staff Sgt. John A. Thorburn.
“He was a highly decorated war hero who survived many government-funded secret missions in Vietnam,” he tells us, “only to come home affected by Agent Orange, which caused serious complications with some of his children and grandchildren. The scene pictured is based on some of the wilder stories surrounding his life; it was once rumored that he escaped a mental hospital and went on a killing spree.
