Jennifer Garner was known for portraying the superhero Elektra in both Daredevil and her titular film. But before she nabbed the role, Stana Katic had her eyes set on the character as well.

Katic is no stranger to superhero projects. She’s voiced some of comic books’ most iconic characters across a few forms of media. This included playing Talia Al Ghul in the video game Batman: Arkham City, and Wonder Woman in the animated film Justice Society: World War II. She even felt her character in Castle, Kate Beckett, was a superhero in her own right.
“I think she’s like a female superhero on television, and we’re slowly exploring more and more of that,” Katic once told Collider. “She’s got a tremendous amount of integrity. I’ve gotten to do more stunts lately, which is really cool.

Christian Bale has left viewers in complete awe with his extraordinary acting talent and versatility. However, his 2002 movie, Reign of Fire with another Hollywood gem, Matthew McConaughey initially left him concerned.

Christian Bale once teamed up with Matthew McConaughey for the 2002 feature Reign of Fire. But being such a CGI-heavy film, Bale felt it would’ve been easy for the cast to look a bit ‘foolish’ doing the project.

Reign of Fire was a 2002 fantasy film that saw Bale playing a warrior protecting his community from dragons. But when Bale was initially offered the part, he admitted that he was reluctant to do the movie. He was partially concerned that the feature wouldn’t live up to expectations special-effects wise.
“I needed convincing, really. I could see that this could be the movie that it has turned out to be, that it could be a great idea. But you’re looking at a script. I have no pictures of a dragon, nothing whatsoever. And...

Let’s be honest, what’s your all-time favorite dragon movie? Is it Dragonslayer? Dragonheart? Q: The Winged Serpent? Maybe it’s an animated feature like How to Train Your Dragon or Raya and the Last Dragon? No matter what your answer is, the unpopular opinion remains, Rob Bowman’s 2002 popcorn flick Reign of Fire is one of the most underrated movies featuring the mythic fire-breathing beasts. Never mind the fact that the flick boasts a lowly 39 Metascore and 42% Rotten Tomatoes score, the grim dystopian world-building, excellent visual effects, and big-d*ck swinging performances from Matthew McConaughey and Christian Bale remain a ton of fun to behold. Of course, Reign of Fire had the misfortune of running into the far more potent cinematic behemoth, Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, which largely overshadowed the movie’s mild commercial success and eventually relegated the film into obscurity at worst,...

The 2000s was a strange time for genre filmmaking and especially science fiction. While sci-fi cinema was in theory thriving, that was mainly thanks to the presence of franchises that were, in fact, their own mini-genres (like Star Wars and Star Trek). Then there were superhero films, always sort of a cousin to sci-fi, with the X-Men and Spider-Man series both exploding and the Marvel Cinematic Universe making its debut with Iron Man (2008) just as the decade came to a close.
But there were some top-shelf literary adaptations as well. Steven Spielberg’s A.I.: Artificial Intelligence (2001) was a flawed yet powerful expansion of a Brian Aldiss story while his War of the Worlds (2005) and Minority Report (2002) were outstanding takes on classic tales from H.G. Wells and Philip K. Dick (there might have been no sci-fi filmmaker more consistent at the time than The Beard). Other remakes or adaptations,...

If you have not re-watched The X-Files in a while, you might not remember the 13th episode of season 3, “Syzygy,” very well. It appears on neither “Best Episodes” lists nor “Worst Episodes” lists of the show. There are 218 episodes of The X-Files, and in rankings of all or most of them, “Syzygy” appears in positions like 77, 123, and 133. Even the director, Rob Bowman, is not particularly keen on the episode. In the book X-Files Confidential, he talked about how he felt pressured to shoot it quickly because the break for the holidays was coming up, and that he felt the story was “oblique.”
But there is one group of X-Files fans “Syzygy” speaks to more than any other, especially when it first aired: teenage girls. For them, or for those who first watched it as a teenager, this may not only be a favorite episode, it is certainly an important one.

When “The X-Files” premiered on Sept. 3, 1993 on Fox, viewers had no idea how incredibly bizarre the cases tackled by FBI agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) would be.
Anything that was deemed paranormal, supernatural or unexplainable was called an “X-File” — the cases that no one else in the agency wanted to touch.
In the show’s 11 seasons, they dealt with more than just aliens and shadowy government conspiracies. Their cases involved demons, ghosts, serial killers, sea monsters and even vampires. In celebration of the series’ 30th anniversary, here are the episodes with the scariest villains and killer creatures.

From fire-breathing beasts to benevolent nature spirits, dragons are present in the myths of nearly every single culture. And while popular media has mostly defaulted to traditional western fantasy drakes instead of exploring the extensive mythology behind East Asian and even Central American dragons, it makes sense that there’s an overabundance of stories featuring these legendary reptiles.
Fortunately, there are still some innovative storytellers willing to come up with fresh takes on familiar monsters, and one of my favorite draconic reinventions happens to be Rob Bowman’s post-apocalyptic creature feature Reign of Fire, an underrated early 2000s gem that was only a couple of drafts away from greatness.
While the end result was undoubtedly a product of its time, the story behind Reign of Fire begins in the mid 90s with an unrecognizable spec script written by Kevin Peterka and Gregg Chabot. This early version of the story followed...

Hugh Jackman won’t be the only one bringing his Marvel character out of retirement for “Deadpool 3.” Jennifer Garner is also returning to star as Elektra in the Ryan Reynolds starrer, according to reports.

Dragons are a part of nearly every major culture. While some of us seem to think that this means they were once real creatures that terrorized our ancestors, it’s more likely that there’s something inherently and universally fascinating about reptilian monsters hovering above humankind on the food chain.
That’s why it makes sense that there are so many unique dragons in media, both friendly and demonic. However, some of these fire-breathing creatures are more monstrous than others, and that’s why we’ve decided to compile a list of six of the scariest dragons in film, as we horror hounds tend to prefer fantasy stories with a hint of darkness.
To be included on this list, dragons need to stand out in either their villainous behavior or nightmarish design, but they don’t necessarily have to appear in a traditionally scary movie. And for the purposes of this article,...

Castle has a new address. Lifetime has set an October 5 premiere date for the latest exclusive syndicated run of the crime dramedy starring Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic.
The series will play at 2 p.m. Tuesdays starting next week and will continue through November. It will go on hiatus when Lifetime begins its annual It’s a Wonderful Lifetime holiday movie event, then will return in January.
Castle, which originally aired on ABC from 2009-16, stars Fillion as famous mystery novelist Richard Castle, who connects with the NYPD when he is enlisted to help solve a series of copycat murders ripped from the pages of his Derek Storm novels. Suffering from writer’s block and realizing that working with the police might give him some new ideas for his next book, Castle finds himself paired with Detective Kate Beckett (Katic). The Marvel vs. DC rivalry is arguably much less important to the contracted talent than it is to either the studios or the fans, with countless actors having starred in numerous projects from both comic book companies. However, you’re a lot more likely to find those in front of the camera pulling double duty than those behind it.
That being said, David S. Back in the mid-2000s, it appeared to be a foregone conclusion that Jennifer Garner would reign for years as one of Hollywood’s premiere action heroines. The actress’ breakthrough role in Alias saw her demonstrate some serious chops when it came to the fight choreography, and that’s without even mentioning her stellar performance across the show’s run which led to a Golden Globe win for Best Actress in a Television Series Drama for the first season, while she picked up a further three consecutive nominations in the same category.
At the height of Alias‘ popularity, Garner starred as Elektra Natchios in the disappointing Daredevil, but the enthusiastic reception to her portrayal of the iconic comic book character led to a solo spinoff, which is where the wheels started to come off. Rob Bowman’s Elektra was panned by critics and bombed hard, leading many to believe that...

As Geddy Lee put it in a recent Rolling Stone interview, Rush’s Hemispheres signified “the end of a thing.” That thing was the band’s high-prog period, marked by grandiose, album-side–filling tracks. This phase lasted just three short years but produced some of the greatest-ever examples of the style. If 1976’s 2112 was the band’s fiery eureka moment, Hemispheres — Rush’s sixth LP, released in October 1978 — was a mature masterpiece.

When “The X-Files” debuted Sept. 10, 1993, it broke a lot of rules about television series. So at a press gathering, the creative group was asked what the show was aiming for. David Duchovny deadpanned, “Syndication.”
The series has surpassed even his expectations, running nine seasons (with an added two-season revival) and is still airing worldwide after 25 years.
On the day that the show debuted, Variety reviewer Tony Scott raved about the “ingenious script” by creator-exec producer Chris Carter. Scott continued, “The artful presentation gives TV sci-fi a boost … the series kicks off with drive and imagination.”
The show earned respectable ratings for Fox Broadcasting, in its first year of seven-nights-a-week programming. Soon there was a growing community of “X-Philes,” who used the new internet (aka “information superhighway”) to exchange ideas with other fans about the actions of FBI agents Mulder and Scully. The episode is told somewhat out of order, starting with an airplane crashing into Angels Memorial. It then backtracks to the events leading up to that crash — and boy oh boy is there a lot.

“Dear #CodeBlack fans, the sad news came today that we were cancelled,” he wrote. “It’s been a true joy to make this show and watch your response every week. Thank you for all of your passion. Truly, our best episodes have yet to air. We hope you’ll watch and enjoy them. We made them for you.”
The series takes place in the fictional Angels Memorial Hospital, where the high number often outnumbered the limited resources available to doctors and patients, creating a situation known in some hospitals as a “code black.”

CBS medical drama Code Black will not return for a fourth season. Creator/showrunner Michael Seitzman revealed the news in a note to fans early Thursday on Twitter.
“The sad news came today that we were cancelled,” Seitzman wrote. “It’s been a true joy to make this show and watch your response every week. Thank you for all of your passion. Truly, our best episodes have yet to air. We hope you’ll watch and enjoy them. We made them for you.”

The series returned April 25 to soft numbers, with its Season 3 premiere down 33% compared with last season’s debut. It came down to the wire last year, with the show getting a last-minute Season 3 renewal, as it did for Season 2. Because of the late start, the network this year postponed the renewal decision until after the upfronts.

The decision not to renew for a fourth season was not a surprise. Seitzman wrote that the season finale was written as a series ender. “We always suspected this would be the last season. We wrote it to end that way,” he tweeted.

Created by Seitzman, Code Black took place in the busiest, most notorious ER in the nation, where the staggering influx of patients outweighed the limited resources available to the doctors and nurses whose job is to treat them all – creating a condition known as Code Black.
Marcia Gay Harden starred along with Boris Kodjoe, Harry Ford, Benjamin Hollingsworth, William Allen Young, Emily Tyra, Noah Gray-Cabey, Emily Alyn Lind and Moon Bloodgood, along with Luis Guzmán and Rob Lowe.
The series was produced by ABC Television Studios in association with CBS Television Studios. Seitzman executive produced with David Marshall Grant, Rob Bowman, Marti Noxon, Linda Goldstein Knowlton, Ryan McGarry and Mike Weiss.

Three-time Tony Award nominee Andy Karl, last seen on Broadway in Groundhog Day, has been cast as the male lead in the upcoming Pretty Woman: The Musical. He’ll play Edward Lewis (Richard Gere in the 1990 movie) opposite Samantha Barks’ Vivian (the role that made a superstar of Julia Roberts).
Karl, who won an Olivier Award for the London production of Groundhog Day and also starred in Broadway’s Saturday Night Fever, replaces Steve Kazee, who left the Pretty Woman production for family reasons, according to producers.
The new musical, which begins performances July 20 at the Nederlander Theatre, also stars Karl’s real-life wife Orfeh, a Tony nominee for Legally Blonde. Karl had seen the show in pre-Broadway workshops and the Chicago run.

ABC has picked up four new series from its sister ABC Studios, including a new drama from Shonda Rhimes’ company, a drama about saving the world (starring Jason Ritter), a series about refugees… from America, and comedy that sounds like it might take a few cues from the recently installed White House inhabitant.

With a few sneaky edits, a trailer can make a film look entirely different. Here are some of the worst offenders...
In distilling an entire film down to two and a half minutes or less, some things are bound to get lost in translation. With so much competition, the emphasis seems to be put on showing at least a little of every, major setpiece and giving audiences a strong idea of what to expect.
On the other hand, some trailers hide what the film really is--we've all seen trailers that have given us a certain expectation, only to leave us a little baffled once we see the final film. Sometimes it's to avoid giving away spoilers or keeping some surprises back for the film itself, but more often it's to convince an audience to see something that they might otherwise not.

My heart nearly exploded when word leaked over the weekend that Fox was in the early stages of reviving beloved supernatural procedural "The X-Files," most likely for a limited run sometime in the next few years. While stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, who played FBI special agents Mulder and Scully, respectively, have a lot on their plates right now, with Duchovny's NBC series "Aquarius" set to air soon and Anderson bumped up to a beefier role in this summer's season of "Hannibal," that doesn't mean its return still isn't imminent. Original creator Chris Carter's most recent effort, a series for Amazon called "The After," was unceremoniously canceled even though the company had ordered an entire season of the show, so he's free, which means that the show could be incubated creatively even while waiting for its stars to become available.

Consistency isn't necessarily Castle's strong suit, as its previous two episodes prove...
This review contains spoilers.
7.4 Child's Play & 7.5 Meme Is Murder
Of all the adjectives I can think of that might be used to describe a television series, the one I would most shy away from with Castle is “consistent.” The show is fun—most of the time. Formulaic—sometimes. Inventive—on occasion. Inspired—once in a while. But unfortunately, good or bad, it’s none of these things consistently.
Last week’s Child’s Play and this week’s Meme Is Murder are effective examples of this.
In Child’s Play, Beckett and Castle investigate the death of the driver of an old-fashioned ice-cream truck. Found in the last place one would try to sell frozen treats to the little ones, the truck also yields a field-trip permission slip which leads the duo to a classroom of second graders.
