Scout a picturesque cliffside and fire up the wind machines because Paul Rudd and Nick Jonas are ready to feel the wind in their hair while serenading audiences for the musical comedy Power Ballad. The film starring Rudd and Jonas revolves around a wedding singer (Rudd), a rock star (Jonas), and the song that divides them. The project hails from 30West and Anthony Bregman’s Likely Story.
John Carney directs Power Ballad from a script he co-wrote with Peter McDonald, who wrote and directed the comedy short Pentecost and co-wrote The Bachelor Weekend with John Butler.
“We are so excited to bring John Carney’s next film to Cannes. John has a magic ability to weave great music into wonderfully engaging and universally relatable stories that make audience emotions run high,” said Alex Walton of WME. “Power Ballad is fun and heartwarming – themes that audiences crave today. Paul Rudd is set to go toe to toe, voice to voice, with Nick Jonas for John Carney’s latest musical.
Carney’s “Power Ballad” stars Rudd and Jonas as two very different types of musicians: One is a wedding singer while the other is a rock star, and while the casting details over which actor is playing which character haven’t been confirmed, Jonas’ real-life rock star status must be influencing his performance.
Carney recently helmed “Flora and Son” and is set to direct the upcoming musical comedy that he cowrote with Peter McDonald. Principal photography began in Dublin at the end of April, with the feature billed as “an uplifting music-driven story about a wedding singer, a rock star, and the song that comes between them.”

Anne Hathaway and Thomasin McKenzie are spiraling into something dark in the first trailer for Neon’s Eileen.
Directed by William Oldroyd, written by Ottessa Moshfegh and Luke Goebel, and also starring Shea Whigham, Marin Ireland and Owen Teague, Eileen follows McKenzie’s titular young secretary, employed at a prison during a bitter Massachusetts winter in 1964.
The more than two-minute trailer teases a doozy of a day — “one of those days you’ll never forget” — for Eileen after the arrival of Hathaway’s Rebecca, the new prison psychologist. “She may be easy on the eyes,” one man says as he introduces her to prison staff. “But I assure you, she is very smart.”
The blonde-haired, pink-lipped smoker leaves Eileen feeling off-kilter, as someone who “lives a little differently than most people.” She sees something in Eileen, who is hardly normal and far from “average,” according to the psychologist.

Thomasin McKenzie’s dull life transforms once Anne Hathaway comes onto the scene in Neon’s Eileen trailer. McKenzie (Totally Completely Fine) stars as a secretary who quickly becomes infatuated with a new counselor, played by Oscar winner Anne Hathaway (Les Misérables), in the noir thriller.
The cast also includes Shea Whigham, Sam Nivola, Owen Teague, Marin Ireland, and Siobhan Fallon Hogan.
Eileen‘s based on Ottessa Moshfegh’s book, with the author and Luke Goebel (Moshefegh’s spouse) adapting and William Oldroyd (Lady Macbeth) directing. Producers include Moshfegh, Goebel, Oldroyd, Anthony Bregman, Stefanie Azpiazu, Peter Cron, and Bavand Karim.
The R-rated drama currently sits at 89% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes following its Sundance Film Festival premiere. John Carney’s musical-comedy “Flora and Son,” which was acquired by Apple Original Films after its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, is one of the streamer’s multiple awards contenders this year, most notably for best original song.
With 18 original songs in the feature, deciding which one to put up for Academy consideration was a daunting task. Variety has learned that Apple will submit the “High Life” track composed by Carney, Gary Clark and star Eve Hewson. The song is performed in the movie by Hewson, Orén Kinlan, Jack Reynor and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

John Carney has not directed a movie since 2016, and that movie was "Sing Street." Though the movie may not have been a big hit at the time, those who have seen it largely regard it — rightfully so — as a true gem. It would not be a stretch to call it one of the most underappreciated movies of the last decade. All of this to say, Carney is finally back with a new movie in the form of "Flora and Son," which is set for release next month. Now, Apple has released a trailer ahead of the film's rollout, and it looks very much in line with what we've come to expect from Carney as a filmmaker.

The Gotham Awards have removed the budget cap requirement for movies to qualify for its honors, opening the door for big-budget studio darlings like “Barbie,” “Oppenheimer,” and more contenders in the Oscar race to submit for awards consideration.
The Gotham Awards, now entering their 33rd year, have previously set a cap on movies submitted to have a budget no higher than $35 million, and that’s been the case for the last decade. That’s still produced winners like “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and “Spotlight,” which later went on to win the Best Picture Oscar.
But after “The Departed” was nominated for the top prize in 2006, losing to indie “Half Nelson,” the Gotham Awards modified its mission statement to recognize movies by filmmaker, not committee, and made within “an economy of means.” That’s helped the awards show, the first in the film awards season, to stand out from the...

The Gotham Film & Media Institute announced key changes for this year’s 33rd Annual Gotham Awards. The organization has removed the budget cap requirements which they claim will create “a more inclusive submission pool” of potential nominees.
In previous years, to be eligible for the Gothams, a film’s budget couldn’t exceed $35 million. Past winners have included “Spotlight” (2015), “Moonlight” (2016) and “Everything Everywhere All at Once” (2022), all of which went on to win best picture at the Oscars. The removal of budget caps will now invite big-budget vehicles like “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” to submit for Gotham consideration if they elect to do so.
“For the 33rd Annual Gotham Awards, we’re excited to include more voices from around the globe by expanding eligibility for the many brilliant international films and filmmakers who deserve to be in consideration this year,” said Jeffrey Sharp, executive director of The Gotham Film & Media Institute.

Signature Entertainment has snapped up U.K. and Ireland rights to Julia Louis-Dreyfus comedy “You Hurt My Feelings” from FilmNation Entertainment.
Directed by Nicole Holofcener, the film stars Louis-Dreyfus and Tobias Menzies (“The Crown”) as a couple whose marriage is thrown into turmoil when she overhears his honest reaction to her latest book. The cast also includes Owen Teague, David Cross, Arian Moayed and Michaela Watkins.
It premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and will close Sundance London.
Reviewing the film for Variety, critic Owen Gleiberman said: “The key to ‘You Hurt My Feelings’ is that the entire movie turns into a satire of what has become our fetishistically supportive and oversensitive therapeutic culture of positivity. All these things, in a way, are necessary. But maybe, the film suggests, we have tried to heal ourselves a little too much. Maybe we need a little more naked honesty mixed in with the wellness.

JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray gave Lady Macbeth director William Oldroyd’s “terrific potboiler” Eileen an 8/10 review (read it Here) after watching the movie at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, and now we know when a wider audience is going to have the chance to see it. Neon has picked up the North American rights to Eileen and are planning to release the film theatrically this fall.

It’s been a couple of months, but the Sundance sales are still slowly chugging along, and today it’s for one of IndieWire’s favorites out of the festival. Neon has landed the North American rights to “Eileen,” the drama starring Thomasin McKenzie and Anne Hathaway.
William Oldroyd (“Lady Macbeth”) directed “Eileen,” based on Ottessa Moshfegh’s 2015 novel of the same name. The project was considered one of the hotter and more acclaimed titles out of Sundance, and Neon says the distributor beat out several other buyers out of the festival. But based on a prior source who told IndieWire that the film came at a budget of $16 million, that could have explained why it took some time for this one to close. No acquisition price for the film was disclosed.
“Eileen” also stars Shea Whigham, Marin Ireland, and Owen Teague, but the highlights are McKenzie and Hathaway, whom...

Neon has purchased North American rights to “Eileen,” an adaptation of Ottessa Moshfegh’s acclaimed novel of the same title.
The movie debuted to strong reviews at Sundance, but its high price tag, said by sources to be in the range of $15 million, made it difficult for the film to score a distribution deal. It languished on the market for roughly two months as several studios kicked the tires. This despite the combined star wattage of “Jojo Rabbit’s” Thomasin McKenzie and Oscar-winner Anne Hathaway and a twisty plot. The rest of the ensemble includes Shea Whigham, Marin Ireland, and Owen Teague. William Oldroyd (“Lady Macbeth”) directs from a script by Moshfegh who adapted “Eileen” with Luke Goebel. Neon will release the film theatrically this fall.
The deal was negotiated by Jeff Deutchman for Neon, WME Independent and Fifth Season. Financial details of the sale were not revealed.
