Sophie Turner hasn’t acted a whole lot since “Game of Thrones” ended in 2019. She was in a Quibi show called “Wilderness,” had a viral cameo in Netflix movie “Do Revenge,” and was part of the ensemble in the Max limited series “The Staircase.” But she hasn’t had a lead role in a prominent series of her own.
But that’s changing, as Turner has signed on to star in “Haven” (working title), a British crime thriller that’s coming to Prime Video.
Turner will play Zara, an ordinary employee at a pension fund management company called Lochmill Capital, who is thrust into an extraordinary situation when a gang of thieves invade the office and force her and her friend Luke to transfer billions of pounds worth of pension funds. Meanwhile, Dci Rhys, a recently relapsed gambling addict, has to stave off his own financial ruin while he investigates the complex,...

Emily Blunt left her mark on Cannes, and not just with her acclaimed performances.
The actor, in town for the pre-Mipcom premiere of the first episode of her six-part series “The English,” also left a handprint in wet concrete, joining the likes of Jodie Foster, Meryl Streep or David Lynch.
Blunt was joined on the red carpet by co-star Chaske Spencer, as well as writer and director Hugo Blick, the latter also behind Maggie Gyllenhaal starrer “The Honorable Woman.”

Rebecca Lenkiewicz was talking with fellow writer Alex Cary at the BFI London Film Festival.
UK scriptwriters Alex Cary and Rebecca Lenkiewicz discussed the travails of their craft in a talk at the BFI London Film Festival (Lff) this week, that followed the damning findings of a report by the Writers’ Guild of Great Britain (Wggb) that said most of its members believed they were being edited out of the filmmaking process.
“The findings of the Wggb report didn’t surprise me at all,” said Lenkiewicz, the writer of the New York TImes drama She Said, directed by Maria Schrader.

The mere presence of Emily Blunt should be enough to pique your interest in "The English," but what if I told you that the beloved British actress will spend six episodes dressed as a gun-wielding aristocrat who is hellbent on getting revenge? If watching Blunt load a shotgun at the end of "A Quiet Place" gave you chills then this will send you over the edge: she may be wearing lots of fancy gowns, but they will absolutely end up splattered in blood because this co-production from BBC and Prime Video is a classic Western revenge drama.
In "The English," Blunt stars as aristocratic Englishwoman, Lady Cornelia Locke who crosses paths with Pawnee ex-cavalry scout, Eli Whipp (Chaske Spencer) just in time to join forces on their respective hunts for vengeance and journey across the violent American landscape as a team. But seeking vengeance is just the tip of the iceberg for these two.

Pierre-Antoine Capton and Fred Kogel have established their respective companies, Mediawan (“Call My Agent!) and Leonine (“Dark”), as European powerhouses in only a few years. With their new joint vehicle, Mediawan & Leonine Studios, they’re now ready to gear up to the next stage with the acquisition of the award-winning U.K. production company Drama Republic.
The acquisition allows their new outfit, which is financially backed by New York-based private equity firm Kkr, and Mediawan to make its first foray into the U.K. and more broadly into the competitive English-language market. But that’s only the beginning, as the execs said they will look to make one or two mergers and acquisitions per year and are looking at markets such as Germany, France, Scandinavia and the U.S.

Bringing to bear a talented cast on a story of real geopolitical significance, “Black Earth Rising,” Netflix’s drama about the long-tail aftermath of the Rwandan genocide, would seem to have had the potential to be one of 2019’s early television successes. Which makes its falling short all the more painful and pronounced. The show, previously aired in the U.K. on BBC Two and written and directed by Hugo Blick (“The Honourable Woman”), squanders the audience’s goodwill with ill-conceived narrative turns, a reliance on cliché, and, worst, dialogue that defies belief. Its potential resonances as a story about how we metabolize, and prosecute, the worst of crimes ends up, soon enough, squandered as the audience loses faith in the story and its telling.

Lady Chatterley’s Lover, Cider With Rosie, The Go-Between and An Inspector Calls will be adapted as 90-minute dramas for a BBC1 season of early 20th century British novels and plays.
Controller Charlotte Moore and drama controller Ben Stephenson have ordered the dramas, which include Line Of Duty creator Jed Mercurio’s version of Dh Lawrence’s controversial 1928 novel, previously adapted for BBC1 by Ken Russell in 1993.
The sexually explicit novel, which details an affair between an upper-class woman and her gamekeeper, was censored in the UK for 30 years.
The project is a co-production between Hartswood Films and Serena Cullen Productions, and will be produced by Cullen with Sherlock exec Beryl Vertue on board as executive producer. Mercurio has written and will direct.
Meanwhile, Ben Vanstone is adapting Laurie Lee’s childhood memoir Cider With Rosie, about growing up in a Cotswold village on the verge of industrial change.

Sundance Channel's first wholly owned original drama "Rectify" has been one of this year's more critically acclaimed shows, and the network has both renewed it for a second season and greenlit another original, "The Descendants" (not based on the movie). But Sundance Channel has also been stepping up its international co-productions, like the Jane Campion miniseries "Top of the Lake," which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and has brought the network a lot of attention. Sundance's latest co-production deal is with the BBC for "The Honourable Woman," an eight-part miniseries starring Maggie Gyllenhaal ("Secretary"), directed by Hugo Blick ("The Shadow Line"), executive produced by Drama Republic's Greg Brenman ("Billy Elliot") and produced by Abi Bach ("Small Island"). "The Honourable Woman" is a thriller centered around Nessa Stein (Gyllenhaal), who, alongside her brother, as a child witnessed the assassination of their father, a Zionist...

AMC has handed pilot orders to Low Winter Sun and the Untitled Lagravenese & Goldwyn Project, marking the first time the network has greenlit two scripted pilots at the same time. Low Winter Sun and the Richard Lagravenese/Tony Goldwyn drama were among six projects selected to do presentations at the network’s annual pilot script showcase, informally referred to as a “bake-off,” last month. Low Winter Sun, a co-production between Endemol Studios and AMC Studios, is based on the 2006 two-part British mini-series written by Simon Donald and starring Mark Strong, which was produced by Endemol’s Tiger Aspect Prods. Chris Mundy (Criminal Minds) wrote the U.S. adaptation, a contemporary story of murder, deception, revenge and corruption that starts with the murder of a cop by a fellow Detroit detective. Seemingly the perfect crime, in reality the murder activates forces that will forever alter that detective’s life and pull...

Remember that one year (2001) when the list-happy AFI (American Film Institute) decided to compete with the Globes and the Oscars in year end prizes? No, that didn't last long. But there's another AFI, The Australian Film Institute, that has been around for a long time and is in no such danger of being a one-off. This year, they're all about the amazing family crime drama Animal Kingdom which they awarded with a record breaking 18 nominations. Sure, the film is in danger of being way overhyped for people who are coming to it late (which is just about everyone given the sorry state of international distribution for dramas of virtually any kind) but for those who can slough off the "omg" raves, I guarantee you'll think it at least an insinuating and well executed crime drama.
