Richard Lewis, the wild, eccentric, ultra-neurotic stand-up comedian and comic actor who most recently served as a semi-regular alongside Larry David on “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” is dead. He was 76. Lewis suffered a fatal heart attack Tuesday night less than a year after announcing in April 2023 that he had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and was retiring from performing stand-up comedy. Lewis’ death was confirmed by his publicist Jeff Abraham, who noted, “His wife, Joyce Lapinsky, thanks everyone for the love, friendship and support and asks everyone for privacy at this time.”
He appeared this month on the 12th and final season of “Curb” after begging off of the show in its 11th season while recovering from a series of surgeries. But he wound up shooting a scene in an episode that year, anyway.

Richard Lewis, one of the most influential stand-up comedians of his era and Larry David's hilariously neurotic best friend on HBO's "Curb Your Enthusiasm," has died at the age of 76. The official cause of death was listed as a heart attack.
Lewis belonged to a class of comedians who turned joke-telling into a confessional art form. His contemporaries were Richard Belzer, Elayne Boosler, Robert Klein, and Jerry Seinfeld. Lewis got belly laughs out of failed relationships, depression, anxiety, and addiction. He was reliably, identifiably miserable, which was a balm for anyone in his audience who happened to be struggling because, no matter how awful his life seemed to be, he was always back on stage the next night or bantering with David Letterman a week month later after recounting his latest crisis.
He was a neurotic's neurotic, and, therefore, an essential part of our lives. If he could laugh off life's absurd tortures,...

Film editor David Brenner, who died in the middle of work on the Oscar-nominated “Avatar: The Way of Water,” never shied away from a challenge. Ahead of the American Cinema Editors Eddie Awards, directors Zack Snyder and James Cameron remembered Brenner and his celebrated career.
Throughout a career spanning more than four decades, Brenner worked alongside some of the most technically demanding directors in Hollywood, from Oliver Stone to Cameron. But whether he was editing an alien invasion in “Independence Day” or a Vietnam veteran leading an antiwar protest in “Born on the Fourth of July” (for which he won an Academy Award), he always found the humanity of his subjects.
“He committed himself to bringing human behavior to the screen,” said Brenner’s widow, Amber Dixon. “Being an editor is like being a god, because putting things together takes you out of a black-and-white paradigm. He could abandon his...

Avatar: The Way of Water — which this week crossed the 2 billion mark at the worldwide box office and is now the sixth highest-grossing movie in history — earned a best picture Oscar nomination this morning, as well as noms for its production design, sound and visual effects.
But James Cameron, who has now directed three of the six highest-grossing movies ever — his 2009 Avatar sits at the top of that chart — was passed over in the directing competition for his groundbreaking film for the 2023 Oscar nominations. (The movie also missed an editing nomination; Cameron edited the movie, along with Stephen Rivkin, John Refoua, and the late David Brenner, who died in early 2022).
In this year’s best picture race, Cameron and producer Jon Landau (who together won best picture for Titanic, for which Cameron also claimed the directing trophy) are nominated alongside the producers of All Quiet on the Western Front, The Banshees of Inisherin,...

Johnny Carson signed off as the host of NBC’s “The Tonight Show” on May 22, 1992 after being the King of Late Night for nearly three decades. But Carson has never left thanks to DVDs and repeats on such nostalgia channels as Antenna TV and streaming services like Peacock, as well as YouTube. And even with such late-night hosts as Stephen Colbert, Bill Maher, Trevor Noah, Jimmy Fallon, who is the current host of “The Tonight Show,” and Jimmy Kimmel, none of them hold a candle to Carson.
While I was working at the Los Angeles Times, I talked to experts, filmmakers and even his nephew about what made Carson so unique.
“The thing about Carson is that he had all the exemplary skills needed for a late-night host,” Ron Simon, curator of the Paley Center for Media in New York. “Everyone that has followed has skills, but they don’t have every skill.

Who will be included for the special “In Memoriam” segment for Sunday night’s Oscars 2022 ceremony? For almost all other Academy Awards productions since the 1990s, producers typically select 40-50 people from the various branches. The 2021 segment had close to 100 people in a particularly fast-paced three minutes that was not very well-received since many of them were only on screen for a second or two.

Alan Canter, whose family deli has been a late night fixture in Hollywood for decades, has died. He passed Friday of natural causes, according to his family.
Relatives wrote a tribute on Facebook: “He kept his family legacy alive and built and L.A. landmark. He worked 18-hour shifts and took pride in hand-cutting each fruit cup. He taught his children how to run this business just as his father taught him. We are deeply saddened by this loss.”
Al Canter’s father, Ben Canter, and his brothers opened the original deli in 1931 in Boyle Heights. In 1953, Canter’s moved into its North Fairfax Avenue home, and became one of the city’s first 24-hour restaurants, a favored haunt for club goers, stars, rockers and just the merely hungry. David Brenner, a comedian best known as a frequent presence on Johnny Carson's Tonight Show throughout the '70s and '80s, died in Manhattan on Saturday at 78. His longtime publicist told the New York Times that the cause was cancer. Brenner was a sort of proto-Jerry Seinfeld, making fun of the mundane and, as he put it, telling stories about "the dumb things that we say and do." In addition to guesting or hosting on The Tonight Show over 150 times, he wrote several books, did four HBO comedy specials, and was given his own late-night show, Nightlife, in 1986, though it only lasted for one season. This clip of Brenner on The Tonight Show on 1981 is a good example of why he was such a favorite of Carson's.

David Brenner, the gangly, toothy-grinned Tonight Show favorite whose brand of observational comedy became a staple for other standups, died Saturday. He was 78. Brenner, who had been fighting cancer, died peacefully at his home in New York City with his family at his side, according to Jeff Abraham, his friend and publicist. The lanky, always sharply dressed Brenner became one of the most frequent visitors to Johnny Carson's Tonight in the 1970s and '80s. His 150-plus appearances as guest and substitute host turned the former documentary filmmaker into a hot comedian, one who was ubiquitous on other talk shows and game shows.

For the most part, comic book movies have never had great soundtracks, and generally, they tend to bring together a generic mass of rawk music, the kind of stuff that studio suits think that the steretypical 14 year-old boys watching the film would really be into. But the rest of the movie world has realized that a) girls listen to music too and b) corporate rock is out, indie rock is in (please see the shift towards Pitchfork approved bands on those "Twilight" soundtracks). But for the folks at Marvel, it's still 1998.
The official soundtrack list for "The Avengers" was tweeted out today and it's one of those "music from and inspired by" deals, but the selection is truly headscratching. Seriously, what fucking year is this? Papa Roach? Scott Weiland? Theory Of A Deadman? Buckcherry? Evanescence? Do people still actually listen to this music? Our guess is that the going rate...

It's been 15 years since the band Soundgarden has come out with a new song, and thanks to The Avengers, they are back with a new track they created for the movie, called "Live to Rise." It actually sounds like it will be a good song, especially for those of you who are fans of the band. Here's a statement from the band:
We've been hard at work on our new album, which will come out this Fall. When the opportunity arose to write an original song for the film came our way, we thought it could be a cool match. We are excited to release our new song, which is also the only new song in the film. Here's a taste. Loudest of Love.
You can hear a little tease of the music below, so check it out and tell us what you think! Are you happy to see Soundgarden performing music together again?...

This is not just a list of things Judd has done in the past, but it's also a chronicling of his rise to power. Here is the life of a comedy nerd made good - made very, very good.

You never know what you’re going to get when you yap with a notable musician – that’s “rock star” to the laymen. In fairness, the talent usually has no clue what an interview could throw at them. Sometimes it’s the same old song & dance with an interviewer asking the same basic questions while the talent recites the same answers they just did on the previous chat. The result? Boring. Truth be told, yours truly is casually familiar with Theory of a Deadman but had zero thoughts or inclinations about the platinum-selling band’s front man Tyler Connolly. The reason this interview was happening is that Tyler’s band just released an...

Blake Shelton was already a beloved country star before he became a reality-tv double-threat. But thanks in part to his breakout role on "The Voice," Miranda Lambert's better half is reaping plenty of benefits, including a #1 debut on the Billboard 200 charts next week for his new album, Red River Blue.
According to figures provided by SoundScan, Shelton's sixth studio album, his first #1 debut ever and highest-charting album to date, sold 116,000 copies last week. Just behind was the first album in five years from floaty rockers Incubus with If Not Now, When, which debuts at #2 on sales of 80,000. Hello there, you cretinous masses of worthless goo. Here's a few things for you to read before getting back to your miserable, worthless existences.
Remember how some of us were sort of excited, or at least interested, after watching the newest Transformers: Dark Of The Moon trailer? Well, never let it be said that Michael Bay won't find a way to let you down. If you've watched the first two movies, you know that Baynis has an inexplicable link with nu-metal buffoons Linkin Park, a band who you could probably add up their entire discography to make maybe one half-decent album (not counting Collision Course, which is actually quite good but mostly because of Jay-z and Mike Shinoda). Anyway, here's the soundtrack listing. It's an absolute shit show:
1. Linkin Park - Iridescent
2. Paramore - Monster
3. My Chemical Romance - The Only Hope For Me Is You

'Transformers 3' Soundtrack To Ruin Your Ears With Linkin Park, Paramore, My Chemical Romance & More
What year is this? Seriously. Because looking at the tracklisting for Michael Bay's "Transformers: Dark Of The Moon" soundtrack it feels like we've been whipped mercilessly back a least a decade or more. Somebody needs to update Bay's iPod. While the film will be obliterating your eyes with shiny metallic things going boom and Josh Duhamel yelling "Go America," your ears will be waterboarded by bands like Linkin Park, Paramore (whose "Monster" is brand spanking new), My Chemical Romance, Taking Back Sunday, Staind, Goo Goo Dolls and Theory Of A Deadman. Yep, it's a crash course of music called Knuckledraggers…...
