Sometimes the perfect way to serve the best interest of the world’s population is to remain isolated from the problems that are plaguing the public, so that you’re not emotionally influenced by the way the dilemma is impacting the people around you. As Guillermo del Toro’s The Strain comes to the UK, we look back at how TV’s virus thrillers have mutated over the decades…
It was much so simpler when they’d just kill you. Once upon a time, viruses in TV dramas were straightforward slaughterers. The flu of 1975’s Survivors, for instance, cut a swathe through the UK, leaving well-spoken corpses wherever it went. Once infected, you’d cough, start sweating, and then drop dead - unless you numbered amongst the lucky immune, in which case it was time to brush up on your scouting badge survival skills and attempt to make your way in a post-plague world.
Nowadays, TV’s infected aren’t given anything like such an easy time of it. After the coughing, sweating, lurching - and often, dying - stage, more often than not, the virus transforms you. You mutate into something monstrous, one...

There has rarely been a better time to be a fan of the horror genre on television with a bumper crop of horror shows currently hitting our screens. Some shows like Supernatural or American Horror Story weave something original out of various different sources such as old folk tales, mythology and horror films. Then there are the others which are rooted in literary fiction, taking their monsters from the page and bringing them vividly to life on screen.
Whether it's a story of serial killers, monsters or things that go bump in the night, we're taking a look at the books that inspired several of today's horror shows...

TNT's Earth-invasion sci-fi, Falling Skies, has been renewed for a fifth season, which is also to be its last. In summer 2015, a ten-episode final season of the Noah Wyle-starring alien attack drama will bring Falling Skies' story to a close.
Knowing that the end is coming invariably makes creative teams happier to wield the scythe, so we can expect some eventful episodes to come in this season and the next. As TNT puts it, "Falling Skies has begun an ambitious and thrilling story arc this summer as it sets the stage for next year’s climactic final season."
Also returning next year on TNT is The Last Ship, which will return for an extended thirteen-episode season in 2015. The Michael Bay-produced series, inspired by William Brinkley's apocalypse novel of the same name,...

This June, TNT premiered their new series The Last Ship. Based on William Brinkley’s novel of the same name, The Last Ship tells the story of the crew of the USS Nathan James, a Us Navy Destroyer on a mission to save the world from a deadly pandemic. At this year’s Wondercon, we got a chance to talk with Executive Producers/Writers Steven Kane and Hank Steinberg, as well as actors Charles Parnell and Travis Van Winkle about the show.
There have been a lot of post-apocalyptic stories being told recently. What is going to make this one really stand out?
Steven Kane: We don’t think of the show as post-apocalyptic; we think about it as apocalyptic. Some shows, they will say, “It’s...

Whether its Bad Boys or the Transformers films, Michael Bay seems to have a fascination with cars. However, the new TNT show The Last Ship proves that Bay is as adept at sea as he is on land.
Of course the Eric Dane-led drama based on the William Brinkley novel of the same name is not Bay’s first time executive producing a project on a boat: He was also behind Pearl Harbor and his first TV adventure Black Sails. Dane plays Captain Tom Chandler, a Navy man in charge of a 200+ person crew aboard the U.S.S.

We’ve been telling you about TNT‘s upcoming series The Last Ship since we first heard about it way back in May, 2012, as a pilot in development. In May, 2013, TNT released a trailer for the series. It looked pretty good then. Now it looks oddly familiar. It’s set in the arctic. There’s an outbreak. Haz-mat suits are employed.
Look out, kids, it seems that, thanks to Syfy‘s Helix and TNT‘s The Last Ship, 2014 just may be the Year of the Outbreak. And in fiction, we here at SciFi Mafia are good with that. It’s a virulent source (sorry) for some excellent sci-fi terror. Just as there is room for Grimm and Once Upon a Time, The Walking Dead and The Returned, there is absolutely room for Helix and The Last Ship.
Here’s a look at the new “extended” trailer (it’s shorter than...

When Shaun Ryan was doing the series Last Resort for ABC, he told TV critics he did not collaborate with the U.S. Navy on the series in order to be able to tell the stories he wanted to do. This afternoon, at a TCA Q&A session for TNT’s new drama The Last Ship, TV critics asked TNT chief Michael Wright how closely the Navy was involved and whether the Navy was an advertiser on the program. “The U.S. Navy does not normally let Hollywood use its toys,” one TV critic said. The Last Ship, based on the popular novel by William Brinkley, centers on the crew of a naval destroyer who, after a global catastrophe decimates the earth’s population, are forced to confront the reality of their new existence in a world where they are among the only survivors. Wright said he had no knowledge...

Eric Dane turned in his scrubs almost a year ago on Grey’s Anatomy and now he’s more than ready to hit the seas in his new role on TNT’s Michael Bay-produced The Last Ship.

So it was an opportunity for me to go and I was interested in something different,” he told EW last night during a celebration for TNT’s 25th anniversary. “I loved doing Grey’s Anatomy. I...

TNT’s headline is looking all kinds of right this week. Michael Bay? Good. Apocalypse? Good. Action? Good. Drama? Good. We’re ready and so is the network. They’ve given an official 10-episode series order to The Last Ship.
“The Last Ship has all the elements of a big Hollywood blockbuster, from its epic storytelling to its top-notch cast headed by the perfect leading man, Eric Dane,” said TNT’s head of programming Michael Wright.
Now that’s a name that sound ring some bells. The Private Practice and Burlesque star is headlining the new series from Bay, producer of the Transformers big screen franchise.
The Last Ship is one of two pilots at TNT that were awaiting a series order, reported Deadline. Legends, the second one, hasn’t received official word yet.

We first told you about proposed series The Last Ship over a year ago, and updated with the information last July that TNT had ordered a pilot of the show. Now we bring you the happy news that not only has the show been picked up to series by TNT, but we have a trailer for it, and Adam Baldwin (Chuck, Firefly) is a co-star. The only bad news? It won’t premiere until summer 2014.

TNT is hoping you'll come aboard "The Last Ship."
The network announced Tuesday (May 7) that it has greenlit a 10-episodes season of the Michael Bay-produced drama, based on William Brinkley's popular novel. McSteamy himself, "Grey's Anatomy"s Eric Dane, stars as Captain Tom Chandler.
The series, set to launch in 2014, tells the story of the U.S.S. Nathan James, a Navy destroyer that, because of its positioning, avoided falling victim to a devastating tragedy that has decimated the world's population. The crew and its captain must confront the reality of their new existence in a world where they may be among the few remaining survivors.
Dane's character is a career Navy man, described as "authoritative and decisive, but also fair and courageous," who is respected and loved by those under his command. The series also stars Rhona Mitra ("Strike Back") as Rachel Scott, a paleomicrobiologist assigned to...
