Exclusive: Focus Features has acquired U.S. rights and select international territories on upcoming thriller Last Breath, starring Woody Harrelson, Finn Cole and Simu Liu. Focus will distribute the Alex Parkinson-directed title in the U.S. with Universal Pictures International handling select territories including France, Scandinavia, Australia and New Zealand, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, South Korea and Vietnam.
The project is an exhilarating true story, based on the 2019 documentary of the same name, which Parkinson co-directed with Richard da Costa. It follows a seasoned deep sea diver as he battles against the raging elements to execute his final rescue mission. It’s described as a “heart-pounding” and “gripping tale of teamwork” that takes audiences on a race against time. Mitchell Lafortune, Parkinson and David Brooks have written the script for the fact-based narrative.

A 30-year-old tragedy resonated emotionally with one and all at the special New York screening of Bhopal: A Prayer for Rain on 18th Sep evening at the Florence Gould Hall in Manhattan. The social thriller scripted around the Bhopal gas tragedy of 1984, directed by Ravi Kumar and produced by Sahara Movie Studios and Rising Star Entertainment, was attended by the who’s who of the industry including Hollywood biggies. The cast and crew present at this special screening hosted by producers Chandni Roy (Sahara Movie Studios) and Ravi Walia (Rising Star Entertainment) included Martin Sheen, Kal Penn, Mischa Barton, Fagun Thakrar, Tannishtha Chatterjee and writer David Brooks.
The legendary Martin Sheen plays the CEO of Union Carbide Corporation, whose chemical plant in Bhopal let out the massive toxic gas leak. That devastating night as many as 3,800 people had died instantly and more than half a million people were exposed to the gas.

So “The Hunger Games” is still doing quite well, “Wrath of the Titans” is performing tolerably, but looking to ripple the waters this weekend is the behemoth of behemoth blockbuster movies, “Titanic (in 3D),” which (re)opened on Wednesday. It will again make James Cameron a boatload of money (Ha) so he can buy another submarine or whatever he uses his money for. Not a bad life, Cameron, not bad at all. Oh, and some other movies opened as well, in the event that you’re in the mood for something other than a large-budget epic with sick CGI. Thrillers, indie comedies, and dramedies set in Vatican City abound this week: sit back, relax, and “never let go, Jack.” (I'm so sorry for that. I just couldn’t resist.)
As summer creeps closer, so do the blockbusters, and “American Reunion,” fourth in the “American Pie” series, is here to help ring in the season.

While our comprehensive countdown includes a range of selections from Christopher Nolan to Michael Haneke – each with a specific reasoning on why they belong — much of the excitement that goes with being a cinephile lies in the surprises each year. So while we conducted extensive research to bring titles you may not have heard of, stayed tuned to The Film Stage all year long for thorough film festival coverage. Without further adieu, check them all out below counting down to our #1 most-anticipated of the year.

I've spent a good portion of today half convinced it was Thursday. I'm sure this happens to everyone now and again, the persistent feeling that it's a different day than it really is, but seeing as how I'm going out of town on Thursday and I haven't even finished packing yet this particular bit of cognitive dissonance is more confusing than usual and is causing me the occasional mild panic until I remember that it's not freaking Thursday and I maybe need some more coffee. This is similar to those times that I wake up from a dream where I slept through my alarm by hours only to realize that it's still dark out and I begin to wonder if my brain is driving me crazy and then I think "how can one's own brain drive them crazy?" and then I realize that my brain can totally tell I'm onto its plan.

Every year, studio executive Franklin Leonard compiles the “Black List,” a collection of the best unproduced screenplays as voted on by 300 execs and high-level assistants. The 2010 list is the sixth of its kind to bring additional awareness to Hollywood’s hottest scripts.
Topping the list this year is Wes Jones’ College Republicans, a Social Network-esque story (read my script review here) about the underhanded election of Karl Rove to a National College Republican seat, managed by strategy wunderkind Lee Atwater. Shia Labeouf is attached to play Atwater and Paul Dano as Rove. Previous Black List leaders include 2008’s The Beaver, which became a long-delayed film directed by Jodie Foster and starring Mel Gibson, and 2009’s The Muppet Man, which remains on the shelf.
Top 10 of 2010 (via the La Times). The Black List is available for download on the official website. Update: the rest added below:
49 votes: “College Republicans” by Wes Jones.
