BBC Studios is set to wholly acquire Sid Gentle Films, the production company behind hits such as “Killing Eve” and “Ragdoll.”
BBC Studios, the BBC’s commercial production and distribution arm, is intent on growing its portfolio of U.K. scripted labels. It already wholly owns Lookout Point (“Happy Valley 3”), Clerkenwell Films (“Somewhere Boy”), House Productions (“Sherwood”) and most recently Firebird Pictures (“Wahala”) and is the controlling shareholder in Baby Cow (“Chivalry”).
In 2018 it acquired a 51 stake in Sid Gentle, which was founded in 2013 by Sally Woodward Gentle, with Lee Morris and Henrietta Colvin.
The production company has also been responsible foe shows including “The Durrells,” “Neil Gaiman’s Likely Stories” and the upcoming Disney+ series “Extraordinary” and is currently working on “Rain Dogs,” starring Daisy May Cooper.
BBC Studios CEO Tom Fussell, speaking at Mipcom on Monday, said: “I’m delighted to announce the full acquisition of Sid Gentle Films.

BBC Studios has taken full control of Killing Eve producer Sid Gentle Films, unveiled on day one of Mipcom.
The BBC’s commercial production-distribution arm already owned 51 of the business following a 2018 deal and has now snapped up the remaining shares.
Sid Gentle is best known for BBC America thriller drama Killing Eve, but is also behind long-running ITV drama The Durrells, SS-gb for BBC One and UKTV and AMC’s Ragdoll among others, and is currently in post-production on Rain Dogs, which Cash Carraway wrote for the BBC and HBO, and Emma Moran Disney+ comedy Extraordinary. The company was founded in 2013 by Sally Woodward Gentle, Lee Morris and Henrietta Colvin.
BBC Studios already wholly owns Lookout Point, Clerkenwell Films, and House Productions and is the controlling shareholder in Baby Cow. It also took the remaining shares in Wilderness producer Firebird Pictures earlier this month, as it deepens its investment in premium scripted companies.
BBC Studios CEO Tom Fussell was in Cannes this morning delivering a keynote, where he said: “Led by Sally Woodward Gentle and Lee Morris, Sid Gentle is home to unmissable returning hits. Best known for BAFTA, Emmy and Golden Globe-winning Killing Eve, the future slate is just as exciting.”
In a statement, Woodward Gentle, CEO of Sid Gentle, said: “We couldn’t be more delighted to continue our journey with BBC Studios. They have been the most supportive, collaborative and creative partner. It is an honor to work with the most wonderful team at Sid and to feel a shared ambition and outlook with BBC Studios.”
Mark Linsey heads to LA
Fussell also announced Managing Director For Scripted, Mark Linsey, is relocating from London to LA to “place him geographically closer to key global content decision makers as BBC Studios seeks to build further co-production, investment and commissioning opportunities for its scripted offer.”
Linsey is BBC Studios most senior scripted exec, having taken on his current role in a restructure earlier this year. His current role gives him oversight of the firm’s UK-based teams including Doctor Who producer BBC Studios Drama Productions, EastEnders and Casualty maker BBC Studios Continuing Drama Series and Good Omens and Trying division BBC Studios Comedy Productions, alongside its wholly owned and controlled scripted labels, scripted indie minority shareholdings and distribution relationships.
He’ll retain those duties and continue to report to BBC Studios Productions CEO Ralph Lee. Additionally, he’ll now work closely with both Janet Brown, BBC Studios’ newly appointed President of Content Distribution for North America and Latin America, and Valerie Bruce, General Manager and leader of BBC Studios Los Angeles Productions, and their teams, to grow BBC Studios’ presence.
“Under the leadership of Mark Linsey, previously BBC Director of Television and BBC Studios Chief Creative Officer, we are investing in the UK’s most exciting talent and creative labels,” Fussell told Mipcom delegates. “I am thrilled to share today that Mark will relocate from London to LA to grow further BBC Studios’ commitment to the West Coast and our shared creative ambition.”
“Taking our world-class portfolio of labels and units direct to the heart of the world’s largest English language scripted market is a natural next step,” said Linsey. “I look forward to working closer than ever with US based colleagues and customers to fund and create unique new series for the world to enjoy.”...

Rebecca Glashow, BBC Studios’ CEO of global distribution, has worked with many leading media brands that do many different things. In Demand, Comcast, Discovery, Viacom — the common thread between them all is the push to deliver “content that matters, to connect with people, no matter what part of the food chain you sit in,” Glashow told TheWrap for this week’s Office With a View.
Distribution, monetization, advertising — none of the moneymaking arenas within the entertainment industry matter if a company isn’t first and foremost putting out titles that resonate with viewers. It’s why, above all else, Glashow believes her main job requirement is to “super serve audiences” with a diverse array of impactful programming.
That perspective comes from a place of deep passion for storytelling instilled in her by her Nobel Prize-winning particle physicist father Sheldon Glashow.

What was probably intended as an affectionate social satire just comes across as a snide mickey-take of its working-class characters
There’s nothing quite so naff and depressing as a British comedy misfire, and Me, Myself and Di is the real deal: a miserably unfunny romcom about Bolton’s answer to Bridget Jones. Janet is devastated when an internet date stands her up: “He took one look at me and ran off because I’m fat and ugly,” she sobs. “You’re not ugly,” quips her glam best friend Diana (Lucy Pinder), always ready to knock Janet’s self-confidence. Posh frocks, smoldering sexuality and a trail of intriguing but ultimately frustrating clues made for a great mystery back in 1975, when Peter Weir’s “Picnic at Hanging Rock” first appeared on the big screen. The tale of schoolgirl disappearances, deception and voyeurism remains a beacon of Australian cinema and launched Weir’s directing career.
But these days, those narrative qualities are being explored in greater depth on the small screen by top screenwriting and directing talent. “Picnic at Hanging Rock” has itself returned as a new TV miniseries piloted by FremantleMedia and picked up by Amazon for the U.S. and the BBC for Britain. Pay-channel Foxtel has it in Australia – where the novel of the same title is a classic of Australian literature – and sees the show as a subscriptions magnet.
“Picnic,” which opens the Berlinale’s TV strand Monday, is the highest-profile Australian project in Berlin this year.

From Meryl Streep's Iron Lady to Spitting Image and the Spice Girls, Observer writers and critics pick the films, books, art, music and TV that show Thatcher's lasting influence
Art, chosen by Laura Cumming
Treatment Room (1983)
In Richard Hamilton's installation, Thatcher administered her own harsh medicine from a video above the operating table with the viewer as helpless patient: a case of kill or cure.
Taking Stock (1984)
Hans Haacke portrayed Thatcher enthroned, nose in the air like a gun-dog, surrounded by images of Queen Victoria, the Saatchi brothers and, ominously, Pandora. Caused national furore.
In the Sleep of Reason (1982)
Mark Wallinger edited Thatcher's 1982 Falklands speech from blink to blink, fading to black in between, emphasising her solipsistic tendency to close her eyes when speaking as if nobody else existed.

To mark the 50th Anniversary of one of the most successful movie franchises of all time and with filming almost complete on James Bond’s 23rd official outing in Skyfall due for release later this year, I have been tasked with taking a retrospective look at the films that turned author Ian Fleming’s creation into one of the most recognised and iconic characters in film history.

British actor Tyler Butterworth has paid tribute to his actress mother Janet Brown following her death on Friday.
The 87-year-old star, known for her impersonations of former U.K. Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, passed away in her sleep at a nursing home in Hove, south east England, following a short illness.
Brown is survived by Butterworth, her son by late Carry On star Peter Butterworth, and he has now spoken out in his grief to remember his beloved mum.
He tells Britain's Daily Mirror, "I'll miss her terribly. She was a devoted mother, and a devoted grandmother - my son will miss her terribly, too. But we are terribly lucky to be left with all these incredible memories of her. She was wonderful to be around and she worked incredibly hard.
"I remember how she used to say that people responded to her in a different way as soon as she put on her Thatcher wig - it was strangely empowering. Occasionally people would heckle when she played Thatcher, but she joked that being in character gave her an uncanny ability to shoot people down with a razor-sharp comeback. She loved playing Mrs T.
"She will always be remembered for Mrs Thatcher, but I will always remember her from earlier when we travelled with her as she worked summer seasons at resorts and pantomime at Christmas. It was tremendous fun and we had a wonderful time."...
