For years, Awesome Art We’ve Found Around The Net has been about two things only – awesome art and the artists that create it. With that in mind, we thought why not take the first week of the month to showcase these awesome artists even more? Welcome to “Awesome Artist We’ve Found Around The Net.” In this column, we are focusing on one artist and the awesome art that they create, whether they be amateur, up and coming, or well established. The goal is to uncover these artists so even more people become familiar with them. We ask these artists a few questions to see their origins, influences, and more. If you are an awesome artist or know someone that should be featured, feel free to contact me at any time at theodorebond@joblo.com.This month we are very pleased to bring you the awesome art of…

This year's Film Independent Spirit Awards – the 38th — announced their nominations. And it's shaping up to potentially be a very good ceremony for Everything Everywhere All At Once, TÁR, Women Talking and more.
The awards will be handed out on 4 March, though other details are in flux: broadcast for the last few years on us cable channel IFC, the ceremony's organisers are currently looking for a new TV home. Still, the celebration of indie movies will go ahead as planned.
And while the Indie Spirits don't tend to be a huge Oscar indicator, we'd expect at least a few of the nominees to also show up on the Academy Awards nominations list, to be announced on 24 January.

Fans of Jason Voorhees already know the trivia: Steve Miner's sequel "Friday the 13th Part 3 3-D" was the first film in the notorious slasher series to feature the central serial killer wearing his recognizable hockey mask. Some of Jason's more well-researched fans might also know that the mask was molded from the facial accessory worn by the Detroit Red Wings in the 1950s. That information reveals a missed opportunity: The series mostly takes place around Camp Crystal Lake, New Jersey. "Part 3" was released in August of '82. The New Jersey Devils were formed in June of that same year. The filmmakers missed their chance to depict a Jersey boy like Jason sporting a Devils mask. Now he will always be stanning for Detroit. What a waste.

Award-winning journalist Maria Shriver and A+E Networks President & CEO Nancy Dubuc today announced that they will be joining forces on November 1, 2017, for an enlightening summit that will break new ground on the future of women’s brain health.
“A Women’s Health Summit: It Starts With the Brain” will convene leading scientists, thought-leaders and best-selling authors at Hearst Tower in New York City to discuss tackling one of the greatest health challenges of our time: protecting women’s minds from Alzheimer’s disease. Today, two-thirds of all Americans with Alzheimer’s are women, and no one has yet uncovered the answer why. Women also make up two-thirds of all of the caregivers in the U.S., which adds a significant physical, emotional and financial burden to their lives and affects the health and wellbeing of those around them.

1. William Parker: For Those Who Are, Still (Aum Fidelity/Centering)
I have been an admirer and observer of William Parker for a quarter century, but nothing prepared me for the impact of this three-disc set's final CD, which features an orchestral composition, Ceremonies for Those Who Are Still, which ranks high among the best orchestral music of the 21st century, and I'm including classical composers. In other words, don't cringe while imagining the usual jazz-with-strings hack job. There are moments in Ceremonies for Those Who Are Still -- particularly when the choir is singing Parker's poems of life and loss and creation -- when the grandeur of the year's most fashionable jazz album, Kamasi Washington's The Epic (also a three-cd set) comes to mind, but the difference -- the reason Parker's set ranks much higher -- is that his orchestrations are vastly more contrapuntal, colorful, individual, and just plain daring.

“Well, the end of another busy day. I can’t wait till I get back to bed. If that don’t work I’ll try to sleep!”
Myra Breckinridge screens Wednesday night December 2nd at Schlafly Bottleworks at 8pm
You never know what’s brewing at Webster University’s Strange Brew Film series, and there’s nothing stranger than this month’s entry, Myra Breckinridge. Gore Vidal’s 1968 satirical novel Myra Breckinridge was considered un-filmable to begin with. That’s probably true. There’s no way that this story about a sex change operation could have ever become a classic mainstream movie. But the 1970 film version is not all that bad, In fact, thanks mostly to some really clever casting (bringing Mae West into the film was a stroke of genius and a young Farrah Fawcett is quite a sight) and a wonderful, bitingly funny and dead-on performance by a young Raquel Welch,...

Halo 5: Guardians
Developed by 343 Industries

Available on Xbox One
Halo 2 and Halo 5: Guardians have a lot in common. Both have split narrative campaigns. Halo 2‘s boasted the return of Master Chief and gave fresh perspective by allowing players to play as the Arbiter, previously a Covenant enemy. Halo 5 has players stepping back into the role of Master Chief and his Blue Team, while following the path of Spartan Locke and Fireteam Osiris who’ve been tasked to track him down. Both games feature strong player versus player arena multiplayer modes, which went on to shape the future of the series in the case of 2, and is certain to do so again in the case of 5. Both games also take the series to bigger, more explosive places than what came before, with amazing set pieces, mechanics, and a sense of scope and scale that exceeds their predecessors.

All week long our writers will debate: Which was the greatest film year of the past half century. Click here for a complete list of our essays. How to decide in the grand scheme of things which film year stands above all others? History gives us no clear methodology to unravel this thorny but extremely important question. Is it the year with the highest average score of movies? So a year that averages out to a B + might be the winner over a field strewn with B’s, despite a few A +’s. Or do a few masterpieces lift up a year so far that whatever else happened beyond those three or four films is of no consequence? Both measures are worthy, and the winner by either of those would certainly be a year not to be sneezed at. But I contend the only true measure of a year’s...

When I go to the Berlin Talents every February where I talk about the international film business, or when I teach at the Deutsche Welle Akademie to Film Festival Directors from Asia, Africa and Latin America, I am inspired to see the diversity of the well educated, articulate and idealistic younger generation.
This new generation is organizing festivals as new channels of distribution, creating new audiences from heretofore little heard-of places in Africa, Asia and Latin America, and via the Talents, everywhere else in the world. The Talents themselves are living all over the world, and their parents often come from still other faraway and little known countries and cities. These "third culture kids" aka Tck may well be running things very soon.
Last year when a young woman director, seeking some guidance began to explain to me that she knew being a woman with an Egyptian father and a Somalian mother, living in London was not exactly a recipe for success, I interrupted her to tell her never to explain, apologize or negate herself; that her origins and parentage are the new normal and they can make our world a new diverse world in which everyone has a share and in which unique stories that others want to hear can find their audiences.
My own proclivities to diversity -- I belong to a minority group that is increasingly vilified and yet is always at the forefront of every field (except sports and dance) -- that is, I am Jewish -- sensitizes me to what is good or bad for the Jews.
My reflex reaction to every news item reflects this. For example, Bernie Madoff : Bad for the Jews. Nobel prize winner? Good for the Jews.
I am also an American. And I am thrilled when I see The Americas bonding together to make movies. Los Cabos International Film Festival, with its motto, "Get to know your neighbors" and its mission of unifying a production community of both indies and studios from Mexico, U.S. and Canada (and the rest of the Americas) brought this exciting development to the forefront of my mind.
On the Jewish side of this development, it is also great because in our business there are always Jews, no matter where, even in Palestinian production, thanks to Katriel Schory of the Israel Film Fund. That is, in fact, why I entered this crazy business in the first place.
Recently I read the front page of the L.A. Times and saw that China is really seeking a foothold in our U.S. business. Megaconglomerate, Dalian Wanda -- employer of our dear friend, Rose Kuo, and employer of the former President of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), Hawk Koch -- is eyeing Lionsgate (and MGM who still produces the James Bond franchise) for acquisition. Lionsgate already has a streaming VoD deal with the other Chinese megaconglomerate, Alibaba, which looks like it is about to dwarf Amazon.
That is natural connection in many ways. Lionsgate has a stable and friendly team whose players, from Jon Feltheimer, Michael Burns, John Dellaverson, Steve Beeks, Jason Constantine, Eda Kowan, and even the comparatively newcomer to LG, Patrick Wachsberger and his team, have been together a very long time making LG one of the most stable companies in the business. At face value, when reckoning the Us $40.9 million gross in China of "Escape Plan", a Us $25.1 million grosser in U.S., or "The Hunger Games" which in China grossed U.S. $27.9 million and in U.S. Grossed Us $408 million, this looks like a good match.
Let me go back one step before I step forward into the Dance of the New Year with the points I want to make in this blog.
One step back:
Three years ago, the Chinese paid for the most lavish Cannes Market Opening Night party we had seen in a very long time. The following year India hosted the party on a decidedly lesser budget. The following year it reverted to the Chinese. The Chinese firework display, their food, their extravaganza entertainment that first year had everybody buzzing, "The Chinese are taking over." This was said as a fearful revelation and with a tinge of xenophobia.
U.S. Debt: owned by China
African developing industry: owned by China
All the factories and steel of Germany: bought and exported by China
Cannes Market: owned by China (not so)
Everybody recognizes the might of China's economic power. Are we friends? Are they potential enemies? In trade we know friendliness is much more profitable than enmity, which is why the world needs to live in peaceful coexistence. China has 4,000 years of business dealings and bureaucratic and political infrastructure building, quite a jump over our measly 125 years of Capitalism.
That is Step One.
Steps Forward: Two and Three, Four, Five and Six
Step Two:
If Wang Jianlin, owner of Dalian Wanda Group buys Lionsgate and MGM, which seems likely in 2015, what does that mean for us? Lionsgate already has a deal for digital on demand with the Chinese megaconglomerate Alibaba.
One, as Jews, it is like the 1948 novel Peony by Pearl Buck. The Chinese don't care that the waves of Chinese populations act like tsunamis. And being engulfed in a tsunami does not mean an end to life. It means the continuation of new, formerly small forms of life which are presently defining themselves as recognizable market forces and which resemble the Afghan-Chinese children who were born in Africa but live in London, or The Jews who look Chinese or Indian rather than "white". These are the "Third Culture Kids", aka Tck, and they are our future.
Steps Three, Four, Five and Six
Lionsgate owns “The Hunger Games” franchise, The Tyler Perry franchise, and it has a solid share in The Eugenio Derbez (read "Latino") franchise, 3Pas Studios. What this promises for diversity is phenomenal:
Three:
Women have a share in "The Hunger Games"...and I hope that a new twosome for the big screen will soon be Reese Witherspoon and Eugene Derbez who have the potential of becoming this century's Claudette Colbert and Clark Gable. "It Happened One Night" remains a classic.
Four:
African Americans have a share as a recognizable market force as the Tyler Perry franchise proves. The “new” demographic can define and refine new audiences in the rising middle classes of Africa. The extraordinary numbers of African buyers at Afm this year attest to their rising economic power.
Five:
Asian Americans have a huge new market too. Finally the niche indie players will find kindred groups in So. Korea, China, Japan, Malaysia and Thailand, Taiwan and Hong Kong, etc. who will show their appreciation of Hollywood trained talent who happen to also be Asian and have struggled for so long to find a foothold in this business.
Six:
And Latin America, the only region in the world without any vexing international competitive opponents, the only region never hit by the military war machine (not to say they have been free of military dictatorships in their histories or subjugated by colonial powers); Latam offers a potential audience of 470 million Spanish speakers.
The diversity of the niche streams will form a strong current. That is where I am seeing the excitement fomenting.
Giants do not live alone among themselves. Even in fairy tales, the people in the cities are the focus of their power. Analogous to that, the U.S. Major Studios, weakened by the growth of independent cinema are now finding major allies among the Chinese and Indians (Reliance does own Dreamworks and Im Global). And as they ever seek new talent to revitalize their propensity to grow fat and slower, so again we can watch and partake in a new growth, a new vitality in our worldwide moving picture industry. There is enough to go around. The majors, while guarding their lion’s share of the market still must spread the wealth because they no longer own all the means of production or distribution.
The 1% cannot hoard its wealth when a new giant is stalking the land and is spreading its wealth in creative ways which bring new life to the bit players looking for work.
More movies with bigger budgets and more megaplexes worldwide mean more actors, directors, writers, producers, teachers and trainers for both cineastes and the general public to buy more tickets...that is show business.
Out with the old stagnation, and in with the new currents. May they become a tonic wave of power that we all can ride into shore. (Thank you Stefan Zweig for your metaphor of 100 years ago.).
Have a healthy, happy and profitable 2015!

Greetings, Gothamites!
As ever, spoilers for the episode follow...
‘Young Harvey Dent!” I said to myself, excitedly. It’s about time: Two-Face is the most iconic of all Batman villains and his duality is as much a metaphor for the struggle between man and vigilante as it is a tragedy with which we can sympathise. Joker might be more emblemic, more primordial, more mythological – the yang to Batman’s yin – but Harvey Dent and Two-Face are the flip-side of the two-headed coin to Bruce Wayne and Batman. I have been wanting to see his younger self in action since the pilot and now is definitely the right time to introduce him.
Oddly enough, the episode appears to have a bit of a multiple personality disorder of its own: it doesn’t seem able to focus on any one aspect of the show for too long and it keeps...

The lesson for this week's Nashville episode seems to be no matter what mode of transport you use, you can't outrun your problems. That goes for a bitchin' bike, a killer Mustang and…a parked car?

Hoping to recapture the magic of his 1992 mega-hit, Billy Ray Cyrus just released a hip hop version of "Achy Breaky Heart."
With the help of Dionne Warwick's son, Buck 22, the father of Miley revamps his country track for a new generation.
Featuring an alien abduction, some scantily-clad twerkers, and references to his most famous daughter, the video is quite a difference from the original.
After somehow roping Larry King into doing the introduction, the veteran journalist tweeted, "Two decades later 'Achy Breaky Heart' has a new #hiphop spin to it thanks to my friend @billyraycyrus & @buck22music." Check it out below.

Billy Ray Cyrus decided that now was a good time to release a hip-hop remix of his 1992 hit “Achy Breaky Heart” with a music video that includes a lot of semi-nude twerking.
Billy Ray Cyrus Releases 'Achy Breaky Heart 2' Video
Cyrus’ “Achy Breaky Heart 2” features the rapping of Buck 22 and some beats that make the original track nearly unrecognizable. A few new lyrics are clear shout outs to his daughter Miley Cyrus. "Miley keeps on twerkin',” raps Buck 22, “Daddy's song is werkin.'" The elder Cyrus also shouts out, “Wrecking ball!” for good measure.
While the song in and of itself is shocking, the video takes it to an entirely new level of bizarre. It starts out with Larry King announcing a UFO landing and then a shot of Billy Ray walking down a dirt road through a sepia tone lens. Then it appears as though he hops onto that UFO,...

It may seem that I'm diggin' in the dirt. Gettin' back to my punk rock roots. Well, some of my favorite new music does seem a wee bit primal, oui? And some of it is even out this world. But all of this music is party playlist-worthy for any weekend getaway. Proceed with caution....

Bones returns with Two new episodes back-to-back on Monday, January 14.
In the first hour, Fox pulls a little cross-promotion with So You Think You Can Dance as the team goes undercover to solve the weekly murder - and dance champs Eliana Girard and Dmitry Chaplin guest star.
In "The Diamond in the Rough," Booth and Brennan reprise their classic aliases Buck and Wanda Moosejaw at a ballroom dancing TV competition. The two Sytycd pros are some of their stiff competition.
Fortunately, it looks like B&B may be able to hang rather convincingly:
If nothing else, it'll be worth it to see David Boreanaz put on hairspray.
Also, Hodgins and Angela's expressions sum things up marvelously.

Welcome to Jim's Notebook.
In this new feature, I will be concluding my week of chatting up actors, actresses and showrunners by sharing various scoops and tidbits from these interviews with my fellow TV Fanatics.
On tap in this opening edition? Intel on Covert Affairs, Dexter, Drop Dead Diva, Bones and Hell on Wheels...
Covert Affairs: If you’re like me, Tuesday's Covert Affairs had you on the edge of your seat. How can it possibly be topped? I went to Auggie himself, Chris Gorham, with that question. His response:
This Tuesday's Big Covert Affairs episode is all about justice. Annie's back on the job and hot on Lena's trail. Let's just say, we're heading into our three week break with a bang!
Does Gorham like to give good tease or what? Sadly, he’s correct in that Covert Affairs is going away for a bit: it will return...

Quick question: What’s your favourite movie? Don’t be afraid to say it out loud. It’s fine. We have analytics, and, according to our data, statistically, you are in someone’s crawlspace. They’re not home now, so no one will hear you. So, go on – what’s your favourite movie? That’s right, your answer was Oldboy. We have a lot in common. Let’s try that again. On the count of three yell out your favourite band. Okay? Okay.
One…
Two…
Three!
Wait, what? “The Divinyls”? Really? As your favourite? Weirdo…
Now, back to Oldboy, there are a lot of good reasons why you like that movie so much, Uncle Creepy. For one – Min-sik Choi’s performance is top notch, good spotting. For another, it is a superbly shot, well-paced, electric, hyper-violent, uncompromising and blackly funny revenge thriller, from the guy we should all really think...

We’re back this weekend with another edition of the Indie Spotlight. Today, we bring you the first episode of the zombie webseries The Dead Feed, along with the latest independent horror news sent our way:
When Good Holiday’s Go Bad: Rise of the Fiend: “Halloween, that magical night that compels adults to act like children, children to gorge themselves and a host of creatures and ghouls, those nasty beasties that hide under your bed, in your closet or the deepest recesses of your mind, all come out to play, scaring and frightening their human victims; at least, that’s how it was in the old days.
Welcome to Halloween Hallow, a disturbing land where all the nefarious creatures that wander the world on Halloween night come to dwell during the off season. In this land of strange and weird creatures lives Jack, the only human ever allowed to live amongst them.

Real time, one-setting films are a tricky feat to pull off, stumping even the most accomplished directors (have you seen “Carnage”?), but director Todd Berger does it with panache in his sophomore feature, a clever take on the apocalypse film, “It’s A Disaster.” Assembling a cast of eight actors in one house for a film that’s part relationship dramedy and part end-of-the-world movie, Berger keeps the setting fresh and the pace moving in a story that takes a humorous look at the problems, both epic and trivial, that threaten to ruin lives. Based on the rapturous response from packed houses at the Los Angeles Film Festival this week, Berger and co. have succeeded in spades.

Between now and June 28, the deadline for Emmy voters to return nomination ballots, EW.com is running a series called Emmy Watch, featuring highlight clips and interviews with actors, producers, and writers whom EW TV critic Ken Tucker has on his wish list for the nominations announcement on July 19.
Before it premiered last fall, many people knew Enlightened as “that HBO show starring Laura Dern and her smeared mascara.” Since then, this moving comedy—which follows corporate whistle-blower Amy Jellicoe (Dern) on her journey from scary, “I will Destroy you!” meltdown toward Zen-attaining enlightenment—has collected a very devoted group of superfans,...

Who are the great American film directors? More to the point, who do we think are the great American film directors? Well, there’s Ford, of course, the Zeus of the American pantheon, by turns comic, epic, maudlin and humane. Then there’s Welles, the ill-fated genius, abused by producers but beloved of critics. Spielberg, even in his seventh decade, is still the boy wonder; Scorsese the mad scientist. Griffith is the wise forefather, deeply flawed but idolized nonetheless, while Hawks is ageless, just as sly and self-assured as he was at the time of “The Big Sleep” (1946).
Kubrick, however, beats them all.
Is there anyone more respected or, with the possible exception of Hitchcock, recognizable? Turn on any Stanley Kubrick movie and you should know instantly, whether you’ve seen it before or not, who the film’s director is. The peerless, pristine images; the long, empty corridors; the upturned,...

In a story on Kristen Bell joining the cast of Jennifer Getzinger's cinematic adaptation of Neil Labute's play "Some Girls," The Hollywood Reporter has exclusively revealed that the actress-formerly-known-as-Veronica Mars will "provide the speaking and singing voice" as the lead in Disney's upcoming feature "Frozen," which means she will play the Hans Christian Anderson fairy tale character the Snow Queen (first published way back in 1845). Additionally, the trade states that Warner Bros. and Weed Road (Akiva Goldsman's WB-based production shingle) have picked up the forthcoming graphic novel "Bolivar" for Irish animator Kealan O'Rourke to write and direct.
Tucked away in the "Some Girls"/"Frozen" story is the tidbit that Chris Buck, a legendary animator who worked on everything from Brad Bird's "Family Dog" episode of "Amazing Stories" to "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?" to "Little Mermaid," before co-directing Disney's lush 1999 animated feature "Tarzan" (with Kevin Lima), will direct.

ABC has tried numerous times to find a new hit drama to help replace some of their aging ones. Pan Am has been a disappointment and Revenge hasn't been a big success but Once Upon a Time looked like a winner right out of the gate. But, how do things look now? Is the show on track to land a season two renewal or could it end up cancelled?
