National Geographic's '90s tech series Valley of The Boom tells the Silicon Valley story like no one else has.
Matthew Carnahan saw only one path when he pitched his vision for a series based on the real-life stories of the ‘90s tech bubble to National Geographic.
The House of Lies creator was never interested in telling a conventional story about clicking keys and endless lines of code. He cooked up something strange, a plan to make a show that was both fresh and innovative, worthy of being set during a period of profound technological advancement. So Carnahan walked into a pitch meeting and told the network that he sought to “ruin the genre.” He wanted the show to be as disruptive, an overused buzzword today, as the Og tech disruptors.

Midway through Nat Geo’s latest scripted-documentary hybrid “Valley of the Boom,” three lead characters are assassinated. Bradley Whitford being garroted in the middle of his own series may seem like a major spoiler, but it’s not even a surprise. For one, you’ve been watching the real-life man he’s playing — James Barksdale, 75, and very much alive — recount the same experiences direct to camera for the last three hours. For another, the assassinations are so choreographed, so slowly executed, so obviously over-the-top, that by the time Lamorne Morris’ imaginary “amalgam” of banker types shows up to explain that all these murders are just a metaphor for what happened to their business, the gesture is redundant — and as painful as a bullet to the brain.

Filmmakers Joe and Anthony Russo believe they will soon be orchestrating an even bigger flock of A-list talent on screen as the Disney-Fox merger introduces the X-Men and Deadpool to the Marvel Universe.
“I’m sure of it,” Joe Russo said. “The acquisition of Fox is showing us where the future of the business is going to go.” Disney CEO Bob Iger has had a “historic” run over the past dozen years, he added. “We haven’t talked to him about when he is going to do it,” but enlarging the Marvel tent and cross-pollinating characters is a key aspect of the $71.3 billion deal.
The brothers made the comments during a rare public appearance during Business Insider Ignition. Moderator Janice Min, a former magazine editor and now a content executive at Jeffrey Katzenberg’s mobile video startup Quibi, invited them to “break the Internet” and reveal the title of the just-wrapped fourth Avengers installment.

There are quite a few series with American themes coming to Mipcom this year, but despite region or sentiment-specific stories, sellers feel strongly that there won’t be a barrier to entry for viewers in other countries.

The birth of the technology industry is an interesting story, one fueled by big money, hubris and creators’ unique ability to see a world that might be overlaying the one that exists. That’s the message that comes through in about half of National Geographic’s new series, “Valley of the Boom,” which had its world premiere at the Tribeca TV Festival Sept. 21 in advance of its Jan. 13 premiere. The portion of this hybrid scripted-nonfiction show drawn from interviews with real-world tech pioneers and scenesters is light but enlightening.
By contrast, the time the show spends dramatizing the stories its talking heads explain is poorly spent, spinning a relatively thin narrative into a six-episode run through repetitious and tiring use of post-modern storytelling techniques that are as tired today as a dial-up modem.
The series tells the stories of three startups in the 1990s — Netscape, the early web browser; TheGlobe.

It’s no secret to any film buff that Todd Haynes can do just about anything. From lush period pieces to family films (Wonderstruck) to an experimental retelling of the life of Bob Dylan (I’m Not There), the director has truly proven himself to be a master of any genre or story he feels like telling. Lucky for us, Haynes is slated to make his return behind the camera with the upcoming drama Dry Run.
It is reported by Variety that it will be based on The New York Times article about Rob Bilott, an Ohio lawyer who uncovered how the chemical company DuPont had polluted drinking water in the region, which opened up a bigger investigation regarding chemicals that were used in everyday productions for decades. Mark Ruffalo will be co-producing Dry Run with Haynes and is considering the lead role in the film.

Director Todd Haynes has been staying quite busy since his 2017 film “Wonderstruck.” The filmmaker has some interesting movies lined up, including a documentary project on singer Lou Reed and The Velvet Underground that is in the works. Well, Haynes can now add another directorial project to that growing list, and it’s interestingly, an open-assignment gig and one that he didn’t develop himself.

The story of how the rise of the Internet changed the world is an important one, but it can also be a little dry. That’s why creator Matthew Carnahan, when tackling the subject for the upcoming Nat Geo series “Valley of the Boom,” decided to have some fun with it.
“I’m interested in the subject matter, but not that interested,” he explained during a panel at the Tribeca TV festival. In the two episodes of the series screened, the story of three rising companies during the 1990s tech boom is told with documentary interviews, scripted reenactments, fourth wall breaks, interpretative dance, and a rap battle. “I just like to play with that stuff, always, and the prankster-ism of the piece is all in service of bringing the audience in on the fun, rather than it being this dry observational experience.”

Todd Haynes is set to return behind the camera as director of Participant Media’s “Dry Run.” The movie marks the rare directorial effort from Haynes that he hasn’t developed himself. “Dry Run” is written by Matthew Carnahan, best known for creating television series such as “Dirt” and “House of Lies.” Mark Ruffalo is attached as producer and is considering starring in the drama, Variety reports.
Plot specifics about “Dry Run” are remaining under wraps for now, although the movie is described as being loosely based on the Du Pont family. The Du Ponts are one of the most famous and richest families in America, and their history dates back to the late 18th century when E.I. du Pont came to America and made a fortune as a gunpowder manufacturer. It’s unclear at this time whether or not “Dry Run” is a period piece focusing on an E.

Director Todd Haynes will take on one of America’s more famous families in his next film.
The “Carol” helmer is set to direct Participant Media’s “Dry Run,” a movie loosely based on the Du Ponts.
Participant and Mark Ruffalo are producing the pic from a script by Matthew Carnahan. Sources say Ruffalo is also considering starring in the film, but negotiations have yet to begin.
The family at the center of the story is expected to be modeled after the Du Ponts, historically one of America’s richest clans. E.I. du Pont moved to America in 1799 during the French Revolution and made his fortune as a gunpowder manufacturer, later expanding into dynamite, paints, plastics, dyes, and other materials. Some of his employees went on to invent nylon, Kevlar, and Teflon, leading to the family’s large fortune, which still totals in the billions today and is shared by more then 3,500 family members.

As the film festival world continues to explore how best to spotlight the explosion of great television within its programming, it’s perhaps the small-screen-specific fests that might be the best guide for doing it successfully.
For example, this weekend’s second annual Tribeca TV Festival, an offshoot of the well-established Tribeca Film Festival, will showcase some truly exciting TV, both studio and independent. “We’re aiming for TV experiences that mirror our programming goals for the main festival—that is, finding unique storytelling pieces for a wide range of audiences that promise a post-screening interaction with the creative talent in front of and behind the camera,” said senior programmer Liza Domnitz. “Whether that be a beloved, returning favorite series like ‘Ray Donovan,’ a premiere black comedy like ‘Wayne,’ or a commemoration of a new type of storytelling with ‘Shark Tank,’ we want to offer people the opportunity to have...

Before the Facebook and Google became the internet’s dominant duo, a tiny Silicon Valley startup called Netscape sought to challenge the desktop dominance of the world’s leading software maker, Microsoft.
National Geographic cranks up the internet wayback machine with its forthcoming series Valley of the Boom, to explore the dot-com era and the culture of speculation, innovation and disruption during Silicon Valley’s unprecedented tech boom of the 1990s and subsequent bust.
The six-part limited series, starring two-time Emmy award-winning actor Bradley Whitford, Steve Zahn and Lamorne Morris, tells the story of the epic browser wars. While most of the show is scripted, showrunner/director Matthew Carnahan weaves in select documentary elements that help tell the true inside story of the internet’s formative years.
“What Matthew captured so brilliantly at the birth of the intent is how dramatically different it was then than it is now,” said executive producer Arianna Huffington.

After some speculation about the viability of a sixth season of House Of Lies, Showtime has confirmed that the comedy will not be renewed past its fifth season finale – due to air on June 12th, 2016.
