DC films as we know it has been undergoing a full-scale creative overhaul, as has been reported in recent months. With James Gunn and Peter Safran now running the show at the newly-minted DC Studios, changes are afoot in a big way and that inevitably means that certain plans were pushed aside to make way for their exciting new chapter. We saw that spill out in extremely messy fashion with the underperformance and bizarre behind-the-scenes power struggle of Dwayne Johnson's passion project "Black Adam" and with the almost-completed "Batgirl" ending up shelved completely. Now, we're getting more reports of one fan-favorite storyline that, at one point, could've potentially made it to the big screen.
On his podcast The Hot Mic (via Heroic Hollywood), reporter Jeff Sneider indicated that plans were once in motion for a new take on a "Batman Beyond" movie. Intriguingly, this project wouldn't have been the...

Almost three years ago, J.J. Abrams’s Bad Robot acquired the supernatural revenge thriller spec script The Pinkerton penned by Daniel Casey (10 Cloverfield Lane, Kin). Now, it finally has a director attached.
Deadline reports that Jason Bateman (The Gift, “The Outsider”) is set to direct the “supernatural revenge-western hybrid.”
Plot details remain under wraps at present, but the title is derived from the historical “private security guard and detective agency established in the U.S. by Scotsman Allan Pinkerton in 1850. Pinkerton became famous when he claimed to have foiled a plot to assassinate president-elect Abraham Lincoln, who later hired Pinkerton agents for his personal security during the Civil War.”

A hot property that J.J. Abrams' production company Bad Robot acquired two years ago has finally found its director, according to Deadline. Actor, comedian, and filmmaker Jason Bateman is set to step behind the camera for "The Pinkerton," which will be the first original film project to come from Bad Robot's reported 250 million deal with WarnerMedia.
News of "The Pinkerton" first broke in early March 2020, when it was announced that "Kin" and "F9" screenwriter Daniel Casey was working on the script for the project. Given the obviously inauspicious timing of that announcement, it makes sense that it's taken "The Pinkerton" a while to get off the ground. Now, though, Bateman is set to return to feature directing for the first time since 2015 to helm what's being called a "supernatural revenge-Western hybrid," per Deadline.

Jason Bateman has added another film to his growing list of directorial obligations. And this one sounds fun.
TheWrap has confirmed that Bateman has signed on to direct “The Pinkerton,” from J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot and Warner Bros. Based on a spec script by Daniel Casey (“F9”). This marks the first feature project since Abrams’ Bad Robot and Warner Bros. signed a lucrative, 250 million deal in 2019. Bateman will also produce “The Pinkerton” alongside Michael Costigan and Bad Robot’s Abrams and Hannah Minghella.
While details on the script aren’t known, it is said to be a supernatural Western revenge movie. The Pinkerton Detective Agency, as it is now known, was established in 1850 by a Scottish-born abolitionist named Allan Pinkerton. Pinkerton claimed to have foiled the 1861 plot to assassinate Abraham Lincoln (known as the Baltimore Plot), who then hired the group as spies and his personal security force during the Civil War.

(Spoilers ahead for “F9: The Fast Saga”)
There’s a bit of conventional wisdom when watching movies and TV shows that most of us have internalized: If everybody thinks a major character is dead, but we didn’t actually see them die or get a look at their corpse, well, they probably aren’t dead.
That goes triple for a guy like Mr. Nobody (Kurt Russell), who is completely absent from the present narrative in “F9,” even while director Justin Lin and writer Daniel Casey use retcons to tie him to so many past events. And that’s very confusing.
Mr. Nobody, who runs the super secret spy organization that has been tangled up with the #Family since “Fast and Furious 7,” also gets to be the inciting incident for the plot. At the very beginning of “F9,” Dom (Vin Diesel) and Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) get a little visit from...

Taiwanese-born American filmmaker Justin Lin has directed five of the nine films in The Fast Saga already, including its lowest of lows (2009's Fast & Furious) and its highest of highs (2011's Fast Five). With Fast 9, known as just F9 or Fast & Furious 9, the auteur of automotive action returns to the franchise for the first time since 2013's Fast & Furious 6 for what is, arguably, the most ridiculous entry in a series that routinely pushes the limits of logic, physics, and heavy-handed family melodrama. Co-written by Lin and franchise newcomer Daniel Casey, F9 begins in 1989, with professional stock car driver Jack Toretto (J.D. Pardo) burnin' up the track at a speedway, his sons Dominic (Vinnie Bennett) and Jakob (Finn Cole) in his crew. During the race, a rival (Jim Parrack) smashes into Jack's bumper, causing the stock car to hit ...

“F9,” the ninth movie in the “Fast & Furious” franchise, has gotten off to a quick start by grossing $7.1 million from 3,100 screens for preview showings beginning at 7:00 p.m. The film will open wide at 4,179 North American theaters this weekend, which is the largest theater count since the pandemic shutdown began.
Universal’s biggest blockbuster is a long time coming, being delayed from a release way back in April of 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic. The film has already made an impressive $292 million internationally, including $203.8 million in China alone.
The hope though is that “F9” can match the performance of the “Fast” spinoff “Hobbs & Shaw,” which in its Thursday debut from 2019 made $5.8 million before ultimately opening to $60 million. That opening would be right in line with what independent trackers are guessing “F9” will do, expecting that even with pandemic uncertainty, the film will rev its way to $60 million. Universal...

‘F9’ Film Review: Superheroes and Soap Opera Soaked in Gasoline and Testosterone, and It Still Works
Starting at about the fifth entry in the series, the “Fast and the Furious” saga zoomed past dealing with car thieves and drag races and went right into international-superspy territory. “F9” shows the strategy still succeeding, even if it makes zero sense that a gaggle of car fanatics with shady pasts is all the planet has to protect it from massive global cyberterrorism.
Don’t bother asking why said car fanatics are the only people sent to investigate a plane crash in a foreign country; “F9” won’t be providing answers to that, much less to how and why some of the crew go into actual outer space by the final reel. These films demand that you just roll with the cockamamie plots, and in return, Justin Lin will craft a breathtaking melee of automotive destruction that plays like Wile E. Coyote and M.C. Escher competing in the Cannonball Run.

Fans of the “Fast & the Furious” films (and Vin Diesel for that matter) may look upon F9: The Fast Saga with more fondness and love than others, but the truth is that it may be one of the most boring entries in the series to date.

This is the Ninth installment of the “Fast & Furious” saga, and like the Marvel Universe they have created they own world. Again it’s Vin Diesel as Dominic Toretto, married to Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) and trying to stay retired and raise his son. The F&f team – now a special ops unit run by enigmatic Mr. Nobody (Kurt Russell) – visits Dom’s farm, and wants him to come back to retrieve a weapon systems hacking device called Aries. Dominic is reluctant at first, until it’s revealed that his brother Jakob (John Cena) is a rogue agent working with a billionaire who wants to possess Aries. So this time … in accordance with all other times … it’s personal.

Dominic is reluctant at first, until it’s revealed that his brother Jakob (John Cena) is a rogue agent working with a billionaire who wants to possess Aries. So this time … in accordance with all other times … it’s personal.

Warning: The following podcast contains spoilers about F9, opening Friday.
Screenwriter Daniel Casey typically finds himself in front of executives and producers when he’s in a pitch meeting. However, when he walked into the room for F9, it was an anomaly for him to pitch the pic’s director, Justin Lin, head on.
Before F9, Lin directed four other films in the Universal franchise: Tokyo Drift, Fast & Furious, Fast Five, and Fast & Furious 6, and then took roughly a six-year hiatus from the series. Lin already had a four page outline which Casey pitched the filmmaker on, expounding on the family drama elements in the film; the rivalry between brothers Dominic and Jakob Toretto (Vin Diesel and John Cena) and the resurrection of Sung Kang’s fan-beloved Han. If you felt that Fate of the Furious and spinoff Hobbs & Shaw were asleep at the wheel, F9 awakes...

Universal’s “F9” can’t come soon enough for the box office. After the strong opening of “A Quiet Place — Part II” brought some hope that the post-pandemic recovery period might be quicker than expected, no other film has been able to come close to matching the performance of the hit horror sequel as weekend grosses have steadily declined over the past month.
The latest “Fast & Furious” film doesn’t need to match the stellar numbers of its $1 billion-plus grossing predecessors to be the turnaround title theaters need, but a higher opening than the $47.5 million earned by “Quiet Place II” is a reasonable goal. Analysts tell TheWrap that they project an opening in the $60 million range for “F9” while Universal is projecting an opening of $55-60 million.
That would put “F9” on the same level as the 2019 “Fast & Furious” spinoff “Hobbs & Shaw,” which launched in North America to...

One-upmanship is the name of the game in the Fast & Furious franchise, from its humble carjacking beginnings to its globe-trotting (now globe-circling) feats of saving the world from the MacGuffin du jour. While its plotting implausibilities and character invincibility have always been part of the joke—never more so with its latest entry—each iteration has methodically upped the ante to some ridiculous next stage. Franchise veteran Justin Lin’s F9 follows suit, yet the prior film’s creakiness becomes expounded here. This is an adventure grasping at straws at every turn—stuck between fulfilling its grounded ideas and striving for franchise-topping action, everything feels like it’s running on fumes.
Series newcomer John Cena (seemingly filling the pro-wrestler-turned-actor slot) plays Jakob Toretto, brother to Vin Diesel’s Dom Toretto, who is apparently estranged enough that he hasn’t been mentioned once over 20 years. No matter: the relationship is...

Nine “Fast and the Furious” entries later, the shadow of Paul Walker, who died in 2013, still hangs over the street-racing franchise. With the latest entry, “F9,” finally due for a release from Universal Pictures on June 25 after being pushed back more than two years (and several times), the stars are starting to make the press rounds. That includes Vin Diesel, who plays retired professional street racer Dominic Toretto, who said he felt that late actor Paul Walker sent him a sign to cast John Cena as Jakob Toretto, an assassin and Diesel’s character’s brother.
“I remember once we started getting closer to production, [director] Justin [Lin] and I would talk about how harrowing it would be to actually cast a new Toretto, the brother of Toretto,” Diesel said during a recent “F9” press conference, according to ComicBook.com. “There’s so many different directions you could go.”

Universal Pictures has released the second official trailer for “F9” — the ninth installment in the popular “Fast and Furious” saga. Discounting the summer 2019 spinoff “Hobbs & Shaw”, “F9″ is the sequel to 2017’s “The Fate of the Furious” and the ninth film in the street-racing franchise. Worldwide, the “Fast” films have grossed more than $5.8 billion dollars since the franchise launched in 2001. With the future of movie theaters in flux, the release of one of Hollywood’s few guaranteed blockbusters will be closely watched to see if ticket sales can bounce back.
The latest chapter again stars Vin Diesel as Dominic Toretto, the character that made him one of the highest paid actors in the world. “F9” pits him against franchise newcomer John Cena, who plays Dom’s estranged — and apparently evil — brother. “Fast and Furious” has always stayed relevant by adding new movie stars into the mix, beginning with the additions...

J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot has teamed with Warner Bros. Pictures to develop Daniel Casey’s supernatural thriller “The Pinkerton” as a feature film.
The movie will be the first original film project for Bad Robot under a five-year mega-deal the company signed with WarnerMedia in September.
The studio is keeping the logline for “The Pinkerton” under wraps. The Pinkerton National Detective Agency was established in the United States by Allan Pinkerton in 1850. He claimed to have foiled a plot to assassinate president-elect Abraham Lincoln in 1861. Peter Dodd is overseeing for Warner Bros.
Casey is the screenwriter on Universal’s upcoming “Fast and Furious” sequel, “F9,” which opens May 22. He worked with Abrams the thriller “10 Cloverfield Lane.” His writing credits also include the Jack Reynor sci-fi thriller “Kin” and the Joe Carnahan-directed “Leo From Toledo” with Mel Gibson and Frank Grillo. He’s repped by Writ Large.

Deadline has confirmed that Warner Bros. has acquired Daniel Casey’s spec script The Pinkerton for J.J. Abrams and his Bad Robot label.
It’s the first original feature project for Bad Robot since they signed their $250M+ deal with the Burbank lot back in September.
Logline is under wraps but the project is described as a supernatural revenge-western hybrid. The Pinkertons were a private security guard and detective agency established in the U.S. by Scotsman Allan Pinkerton in 1850. Pinkerton became famous when he claimed to have foiled a plot to assassinate president-elect Abraham Lincoln, who later hired Pinkerton agents for his personal security during the Civil War. One of the Pinkertons, a relative, was featured in David Milch’s HBO series Deadwood: Sarah Paulson’s character Alice Isringhausen was related to the Pinkertons, and ruffled feathers with the town’s saloon owner and kingpin Al Swearingin.

The “Fast and Furious” franchise is back again — again — with “F9,” the ninth film in the street-racing saga. That is, it’s the ninth film if you’re not counting the summer 2019 spinoff “Hobbs & Shaw.” The ninth film is a sequel to 2017’s “The Fate of the Furious,” and it’s the shortest title yet in the series, as the “Fast & Furious” brand is evidently now synonymous with simply the letter “F.” And why not? Worldwide, the “Fast” films have grossed more than $5.8 billion dollars since the franchise launched in 2001. IndieWire has the first trailer for “F9,” following a short teaser earlier this week, below.
Set to be released in the United States on May 22, 2020, from Universal Pictures, “F9” stars “Fast and Furious” mainstays and newcomers alike: Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Jordana Brewster, Nathalie Emmanuel, John Cena, Helen Mirren, Charlize Theron, and Michael Rooker all lead the new movie.

Who knew that there was so much drama within the Fast and Furious franchise?
If you’ve watched the films since the original came out all the way back in 2001, you’re probably aware of how people are upset over the treatment of Han Lue. If you aren’t, here’s a quick refresher.
Back in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, actor Sung Kang first appeared as Han Lue (also known as Han Seoul-Oh), and was quickly killed off towards the film’s end. Later on, the franchise’s creative team decided to shake things up, and placed Tokyo Drift a little bit further down the timeline.
As a result, Han returned in Fast & Furious, Fast Five and Fast & Furious 6 (I know, the naming convention is really odd). Eventually, the nature surrounding his death was retconned, and it was revealed that Deckard Shaw orchestrated his death,...

‘Fast and Furious’ Star Michelle Rodriguez Rips ‘Hobbs & Shaw’ Writer Over ‘Justice for Han’ Comment
Michelle Rodriguez did not mince words in a Monday night tweet about writer Chris Morgan, who is best known as the screenwriter for most of the “Fast and Furious” movies and the just-released “Hobbs & Shaw” spinoff — but not the upcoming “Fast & Furious 9.”
In the tweet, Rodriguez linked to an interview Morgan gave to Entertainment Weekly in which he promised fans that the franchise will eventually directly address #JusticeForHan, and she delivered some harsh words in response: “I’ve been around since the beginning way before Chris Morgan came along & he has absolutely nothing to do with where this narrative is or where it’s going Fyi.”
Fans began the #JusticeForHan refrain upon the release of “The Fate of the Furious” when Jason Statham’s character, Deckard Shaw, became a protagonist character even though he had previously murdered Han Seoul-Oh (Sung Kang), a fan favorite character who featured in four of the previous movies.

One of Hollywood’s most consistently lucrative franchises, “Fast and Furious” is expanding this summer with its first official spinoff, “Hobbs and Shaw.” While that film’s promotion schedule kept recurring stars Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham from appearing in the upcoming “Fast & Furious 9,” the sequel will certainly not be lacking for star power. In a new video posted from the set, Vin Diesel confirms that both Charlize Theron and Helen Mirren are returning for the film.
