When “Nash Bridges” came to an end in 2001, series star Don Johnson felt like they “didn’t get a chance to finish the story.”
The detective drama had been on the air for six seasons, but “political circumstances” between producer Paramount Network Television and network CBS kept it from getting renewed, the actor recalls. (Paramount decided the production cost was too high even though the series still had decent ratings for CBS.) Twenty years later, the show is still a success in syndication. As TV’s nostalgia boom has led to reboots and revivals of dozens of late-20th century titles, the door was opened for Johnson in his titular Special Investigations Unit captain role in a new format and on a new network.

In the Untitled North Carolina Governor project, a brash Bronx public defender comes to North Carolina to reform a dysfunctional, seriously underfunded criminal justice system, putting him on a collision course with the tough-on-crime governor, when, desperate and out of options, he invokes an arcane law that can compel any attorney to serve as defense counsel in criminal trials… and assigns the first case to the governor herself, an attorney in good standing.

Don Johnson‘s long-gestating Nash Bridges revival is finally coming to fruition, with production set to begin in May in San Francisco.
As previously reported, the project — which was initially set up at USA Network — will air as two-hour movie, but producers are hopeful it’ll serve as a backdoor pilot for a full series relaunch. Don Johnson, set to reprise the title role in USA Network’s upcoming Nash Bridges revival, confirmed today that longtime co-star Cheech Marin will be back for another go-round.
Appearing on CBS’ The Talk (full interview set for the Nov. 26 episode), Johnson was asked by host Sharon Osbourne whether Marin would be returning (as the character Inspector Joe Dominguez).
(Watch a clip below).
“Oh yeah,” said Johnson, “The Cheech will be back. I think in this adaptation of Nash Bridges, he’s going to actually be selling weed. And the cops in San Francisco are actually going to be smoking it.” Johnson was joking, probably.

Franklin & Bash's co-creator has compared the new TNT series to a Judd Apatow film. Former defence attorney Bill Chais told the New York Post that the show, which stars Mark-Paul Gosselaar and Breckin Meyer, was inspired by such films as Knocked Up and The 40-Year-Old Virgin. "I wanted to do a Judd Apatow movie in a law firm," he explained. "If anyone looks to our show for the kind of moments you might actually see in a courtroom, they might be disappointed, but we really do try to tether this to reality." Chais compared the show's treatment of legal issues to long-running CBS war series M*A*S*H. "On M*A*S*H, their attitude was 'Everything's funny but the war' [and] we believe 'Everything's (more)...

TNT's upcoming series Franklin & Bash (Premiere - Wednesday June 1st at 9 p.m. Et/Pt) is a prime example of why most of today's best television is on cable. Not because it's the next best show ever, it's not, but because it can take full advantage of the very different dynamic that exists between cable networks and viewers. If this show were about to set sail on one of the major networks, my advice (whether I like the show, or not) would probably be that your time is better spent looking for something else. Why? Mainly because, despite the fact that I rather like the show, it wouldn't have much chance to survive.
Viewers know how the game is played, and they would see promos for this on network television, and figure that since it isn't the biggest, baddest thing to come along, it probably won't get more than two or three episodes,...

Franklin & Bash's executive producer Bill Chais has insisted that the cases on the show are not "sleazy". The new programme focuses on two young lawyers, played by Mark-Paul Gosselaar and Breckin Meyer, who join a very traditional firm. However, Entertainment Weekly reports that Chais has now explained that the show is "not an ambulance-chasing" programme. "We're trying really hard to have cases where you root for people," he said. TNT day at TCA: Mark-Paul Gosselaar back as a lawyer, and Noah Wyle fights aliens with machine guns!
The producers of TNT’s new dramedy Franklin & Bash reassured TV critics Thursday in Pasadena, Calif., that the show debuting in June is “not an ambulance-chasing” ditty about the legal system and will actually tout serious moments as it tells the story of two rogue lawyers played by Mark-Paul Gosselaar and Breckin Meyer. The show also features Malcolm McDowell as the patriarch of a white collar law firm who recruits the two men.
“We’re trying really hard to have cases where you root for people,” said executive producer Bill Chais. “These aren’t sleazy cases. They are cases that...

Mark-Paul Gosselaar is lawyering up again at TNT, playing one of the title characters in a new series called "Franklin & Bash."
The cable channel announced the series pickup on Friday (May 14), while its sister network TBS has ordered a comedy about college life in the 1980s called "Glory Daze."
Both shows were originally developed for TBS, which is looking to add a couple of hour-long comedies to its roster of original shows. But "Franklin & Bash" was deemed a better fit at TNT, where it has a 10-episode order.
The show stars Breckin Meyer as Jared Franklin and Gosselaar, late of TNT's "Raising the Bar," as Steven Bash, a pair of street lawyers who are hired by a prestigious firm; culture clash ensues. The series will also feature Malcolm McDowell as the head of the firm, along with Dana Davis ("Heroes"), Reed Diamond ("Dollhouse"), Garcelle Beauvais ("NYPD Blue") and Kumail Nanjiani...

It's been a busy day for the Turner cable networks, with TBS ordering the college comedy "Glory Days" and now TNT's pickup for the legal drama "Franklin & Bash." Scripted by Kevin Falls and Bill Chais, "Franklin & Bash" stars Mark-Paul Gosselaar and Breckin Meyer as a pair of street lawyers who experience a major culture clash when they join a more traditional law firm. If you're keeping score at home, Meyer is Franklin and Gosselaar is Bash. [You'll recall that Gosselaar's last TNT legal drama, "Raising the Bar," lasted two low-rated seasons. Then again, at least he's...

This just in: a key source tells EW that TNT has picked up Franklin and Bash, a drama that follows two streetwise lawyers (Breckin Meyer and Mark-Paul Gosselaar) who join a high-profile firm. The drama was one of four that was originally developed by TBS but TNT stepped up to the plate and ordered the drama to series, instead (hmm, did TBS run out of cash after closing that rich deal with Conan O'Brien?) No matter; Bash from Kevin Falls (Journeyman) and Bill Chais (Dirty Sexy Money) should add a little comedic flair to TNT's seriously dramatic lineup of shows starring Angie Harmon,...

Exclusive: I hear pilots Franklin & Bash and Glory Daze have emerged as the frontrunners for series pickup at TBS, with orders likely to come as early as this week. And, in an interesting twist, Franklin & Bash appears poised to move to sister network TNT. In its first foray into hourlong comedies, TBS in January picked up four cast-contingent pilots, Franklin & Bash, Glory Daze, In Security and Uncle Nigel. All four were cast and produced. Franklin & Bash, from Sony TV, writers/executive producers Kevin Falls and Bill Chais and executive producer Jamie Tarses, stars Breckin Meyer and Mark-Paul [...]...

TBS has tapped Breckin Meyer and Mark-Paul Gosselaar as the leads in its hourlong comedy pilot "Franklin & Bash," lifting the contingency off the project.
The cable network also has cast another hourlong pilot, "Glory Daze," with Tim Meadows and Kelly Blatz. They lead a largely young, ensemble cast that includes Julianna Guill, Callard Harris, Matt Bush, Hartley Sawyer and Drew Seeley.
"Bash," from Sony TV, writers Kevin Falls and Bill Chais and producer Jamie Tarses, revolves around Jared Franklin (Meyer) and Steven Bash (Gosselaar), two street lawyers and lifelong friends who, after taking down a white-shoe law firm in a high-profile case, are recruited by the firm's patriarch. Bash has an uncanny ability to connect with a jury and judge, and Franklin is bent on sticking it to the Man.

TBS has picked up two more hourlong comedy pilots with cast-contingent orders: "In Security," from comedy feature director Pete Segal and broadcast comedy veteran Ric Swartzlander, and "Franklin & Bash," from broadcast drama veterans Kevin Falls and Bill Chais.
"Security" was written by Swartzlander ("Gary Unmarried") and Segal ("Get Smart"), who are executive producing with Chris Albrecht.
Segal, who worked with Swartzlander on the NBC comedy "Hidden Hills," also is attached to direct the potential pilot, about two sisters who head up a private-security team protecting the super elite while dealing with personal and family issues.
"Bash," from Sony TV, was written by "Journeyman" creator Falls and "Head Cases" creator Chais, who worked together on CBS' "Shark" as well as Fox's "Head Cases."

Strike Zone: Latest on WGA talks
UPDATED: 12:15 p.m. Nov. 5, 2007
The WGA rolled out pickets on two coasts Monday, after Sunday's last-ditch bargaining session failed to mark sufficient progress to prevent the first Hollywood writers strike in 19 years.
In the Los Angeles area, the WGA West's well-rehearsed strike captains marched out troops to populate picket lines at 14 studio and network sites starting at 9 a.m.
Fox
"The Simpsons" executive producer James L. Brooks, a strike sign in hand, was among the 200 or so writers walking the picket line in front of the 20th Century Fox lot in West Los Angeles.
Marching on the sidewalk of one of the busiest streets in Los Angeles, Pico Blvd., the strikers that included "Shark" creator-executive producer Ian Biederman, "Bones" exec producer Stephen Nathan and "American Dad" producers Jim Bernstein and Nahnatchka Khan enjoyed the support of motorists driving by -- mostly truck drivers --who honked in solidarity. The writers were joined by a few SAG members, including Lelia Goldoni.
The mood on the picket line in the muggy air was mostly somber, with strikers talking quietly amongst themselves between strike chants.
"We're scared; I'd be the first to admit that I'm scared," said "Shark" producer Bill Chais, the designated spokesman and only writer allowed to talk to the press.
While speaking to The Reporter, Chais was getting thumbs up from his boss, Biederman, who was walking the line. Biederman was one of many showrunners who didn't report to work Monday despite talk that showrunners could perform some non-writing duties during a strike.
"Ian is not gonna cross", Chais said, adding that the guild shouldn't leave such decision to people's consciousness. "There should be a set of rules", he said.
Most writers didn't know until past midnight if there will actually be strike Monday as rumors of some progress in the negotiations between the WGA and the studios trickled out during the day Sunday.
"Last night was crazy -- we were burning up the phones, exchanging gossip," Chais said. "We had hope, but I'm not totally surprised I'm here today. It speaks to the fact that it's a monumentally important issue to everyone."
Maybe it was the false hope on Sunday, but strike organizers were not fully prepared Monday morning. By 9:30 a.m., they ran of picket signs and red T-shirts at Fox.
"We've got to get it together", Chais said. "We will".
Warner Bros.
Striking writers took to the main gates at Warner Bros. in Burbank, crossing traffic, shouting chants and waving their signs to passersby.
Picket coordinator Brian Hartt said he expects at least 300 writers, actors and other supporters to walk the picket lines at each of the main entrances throughout the day.
"I have no idea what (the AMPTP) is thinking," Hartt said. "From Day 1, it's been very confusing. I hope they realize we are serious about our future and we'll stay out as long as we need in order to get a fair deal."
Many others echoed Hartt's sentiments, including one showrunner, John, who stood outside the studio's main gate.

Chris O'Donnell has been tapped to star in Fox's untitled drama pilot from executive producers Bill Chais and Jeff Rake. The 20th Century Fox TV project centers on Jason Payne (O'Donnell), a golden boy successful lawyer who has a nervous breakdown and teams with a mentally disturbed lawyer with an anger problem. Together, the two represent people with all kinds of issues, not just legal ones. Chais penned the pilot script. O'Donnell, most recently seen in the critically acclaimed feature Kinsey, recently signed on to star opposite Sarah Polley in the indie Cock & Bull. He is repped by WMA, Untitled Entertainment and attorney James Mandelbaum.
In its first collaboration with David E. Kelley, the WB Network has greenlighted Halley's Comet, a drama pilot from the Emmy-winning producer, writer Andrew Kreisberg and director Jonathan Pontell. In other pilot pickup news, Fox has given a thumbs up to House of Payne, from writer-producers Bill Chais and Jeff Rake, while CBS has given a cast-contingent order to 3 Lbs., from Peter Ocko. Halley's Comet, from David E. Kelley Prods. and 20th Century Fox TV, is a light quirky drama in the tone of Kelley's Ally McBeal. It centers on a young cancer survivor who navigates her way through medical school, friendship and love. The pilot pickup deal is said to carry a sizable license fee if the project goes to series and a major penalty if it doesn't.
